The awesome Japanese toys left on the table for you to try to master while you wait
    Josy A.

Yattaaaaaa!! Okan made me very very happy! Finally London has decent, inexpensive and authentic tasting Okonomiyaki. Yay!! (I know central London has Abenos...but I was never keen on that place) Okonomiyaki is the ultimate comfort food. It is a bit like a fat, cabbage filled pancake; you choose your favourite toppings, then they make it for you. You can pay an extra pound to have yakisoba on top (a 'modern-yaki') I had the Okan special (with squid, prawns, kimchi and corn), while my boyfriend tried the pork and noodles option. Nom nom nom. We also tried the 'onasu' which was a bit like nasu-dengaku, so squidgy, aubergine joy. The waitress made a mistake, so we actually had two portions of this (she decided to let us munch it when she arrived to see we had just finished the previous bowlful.) The owner is from Osaka (this is probably why it tastes so good...Osaka folks grow up on this stuff- it's never as good over in Tokyo!) The only way it could be better is if they had those tables with the hot plates so we could make the Okonomi ourselves. However the lazy side of me likes okan just the way it is.

Every time I've passed by this place it has been full, so I was excited to find a table. They primarily make two things: okonomiyaki (a Japanese pancake street food with various fillings) or noodles, again with a variety of ingredients. The great thing about okonomiyaki is that you can choose what to put in it and this customisable element is what this restaurant loves. I went for their special which is seafood based and I loved it but you can plea around and create it the way you like it. I think the pancake is better than the noodles so get that and then a starter. I recommend the aubergine. The kagua beer is really good too and rare as it used to be only one guy making it in Japan and it has only recently been licensed to a Belgian brewery too. In general, the food is delicious and you should go try it out and the atmosphere feels very authentic, they even have Japanese music playing in the radio (which I ended up shazaming to find what they were). Go eat there... Go now...

Check me out getting down with the Japanese vibe! I thought it was about time to try Okan & it was worth the wait. Announcing on their menus that they made 'authentic street food', I was intrigued as I had no idea what that meant. Scanning the the line up, I spotted a dish that had all my favourite things - squid, prawns, kimchi (huh?) and sweetcorn. 'The Okan special for me please', completed unnoticed by me that is was nested under okonomiyaki, not that I knew what that was either. When the giant bubble and squeak looking hash arrived, I was a little surprised having expected a noodle dish, but got stuck in anyway. It actually did taste like bubble meets an omelette - eggs, cabbage, onion and all of the above goodies. I was a little disappointed there was no bit to it, and when I asked the waitress for some chili she said there weren't any to be had. Sad face. Things to know. - You may need to queue, Okan is small and popular. - It's BYO. Not sure if cockage is charged. - Not the place for a hot intimate date as you may need to share a table. - Cash only. Definitely one to bookmark & try!

Cheese and sweetcorn pancake sans fish

We were wandering round the village on the hunt for Asian food when, lucky us, we spied a spare table at Okan. Japanese it was. I realised I'd been before. All I remember is: eurgh, fish flakes! no-one seems to have mentioned the fish flakes. I love fish, btw, just not when it overpowers all other ingredients. I avoided the pungent, unwelcome taste by ordering the veggie cheese and corn pancake - mercifully fish-free. Packed with crunchy veg, stringy cheese and sweetcorn. My companion seemed happy with their huge portion of noodles. And, we washed our food down with beer and plum wine. If you like a powerful, fishy taste, you'll love Okan. If not? Ask them not to add the flakes - or go veggie.

    Mochi and cheese okonomiyaki!

While wandering around the Brixton Market, I came across this okonomiyaki place and immediately knew where I had to eat dinner. I've only had okonomiyaki once before, in Soho, but it was delicious, and it's hard to find anywhere outside of big cities. They have the traditional flavors as well as some interesting ones. Out of intrigue, I ordered the mochi and cheese okonomiyaki, and it was delicious. Basically a big pancake made from cabbage, rice-based mochi (which is usually sweet, but was savory in this case) and cheese, with a magical sauce on top. Yum. The place was small, but the service was good, and I had a happy, filling meal.

So this review is for the county hall location, but I HAD to write a review because of their OKONOMIYAKI!! It seriously took me back to my time in Osaka! Oh the nostalgia!! The miso udon and curry rice were also wonderful. What a lovely treat for our short stay in London!!! If I lived here I would seriously be back all the time.

Delicious! Also it was quite cheap. I'll visit nexttime if I get there. They have limited space so if you get there around 12-1 lunchtime. There are going to be some queue.

It is one of the most centrally located street markets in London. The market mainly caters for local residents and the office population in the immediate Victoria Street area, selling food, groceries, books and clothing, but is becoming increasingly popular with tourists. My wife and I visited the Strutton Ground Market while we were on a trip to London in April 2019. We had just visited Westminster Abbey down the street, and my wife told me about a great street market that we could stop at for lunch. She had studied abroad in London and knew her way around the city pretty well. There were so many delicious-sounding food vendors that we had trouble picking. I decided to order from a Middle Eastern food vender called Falafel Zaki Zaki. I ordered "The Whole Shebang Wrap" which was stuffed with falafel, eggplant (aubergine), salad, hot peppers, pickled vegetables and white sauce. Just as I was about to take a picture of the delicious wrap, the vendor posed for the shot and had me cracking up. That wrap was so good!! My wife found a cool Indian street food vendor and ordered some Samosas and a side of Chicken with Rice. We ended up sharing all of our food and were very happy with our choices. We'll definitely stop again on our next trip to London.

I quickly became a regular as frankly, there's nothing bad on the menu but some things are just really exceptional. For one, the chicken tinga is the best I've had - period. It's slow cooked with slices of chorizo and is so flavourful it's unbelievable. Just thinking about it now is making my mouth water. The pulled pork is also really good and is right up there with my favourites anywhere - you can tell that they haven't just dumped the same spice mix on both - and although they don't advertise it, they're more than happy to give you a half and half if you want both. But their burritos are more than just that - they make their own guacamole and it's just brilliant, and something I don't normally praise at a Mexican place - the salad accompaniments are also really good. The cabbage slaw is a particular favourite and goes really well with the pork. Their hot sauces are also made in house and the chipotle one is just awesome. This area has an over abundance of Mexican burrito places now with three within a few minutes walk - but the fact that you will have to queue for at least five minutes to get served at Santana Grill is a testiment of the quality that they produce. If you're like me and don't want to try to eat a messy burrito at your desk then you can get it in a box too - and trust me, they don't skimp on the portions!! I've eaten at quite a few different Mexican places around London and I rate Santana Grill and Daddy Donkey as the two very best.

It's about all they're serving, but trust me, it's enough. The duck confit burgers come with your choice of 3 different cheeses, bleu cheese, raclette, or goat's cheese. Personally, I'm not the biggest cheese fan, and always go for the raclette, as it's milder. What makes the burgers even better is the truffle mayo- and if you're lucky, truffle honey- that they're putting on them, which makes the flavors pop all the more. The chips also come with a huge dollop of truffle mayo on top. One setback I would say to the whole operation is the usual lack of seating wherever these guys are to be found. If you don't have friends with you, that means you need to either only order one thing to hold it with one hand and eat with the other, or make a friend fast, to help share the load. Still, it is one of THE best burgers- duck, or otherwise- I've ever had, so I'm not complaining... too much. At £8 a pop- or £10 including the chips- it may not be the cheapest- nor the healthiest- thing you can find on the streets, but it's definitely worth every pence.
