    Empty park 8/2020

Came to see the Carousel Park while in Olcott yesterday but wasn't able to go in since it was locked up tight due to Covid. It's a cute little amusement park on Lake Ontario. I emphasize the word little. There's only a handful of rides but honestly for little ones It's perfect. They get to ride a few rides, watch a magic show or whatever other kids entertainment they have on their stage and maybe get a ice cream. After that you can head down to Olcott Beach or over to Krull Park. And it won't cost you an arm and a leg! Best part to me though is their vintage arcade with old time skee ball machines. You can play for $.25 a game! They even have a chalk board on the wall for recording the high games of the day.

Ride my child hated, but all the other kids seemed fine!

A couple people recommended this park to me because I have a preschooler, and I definitely have to pass this recommendation on to other parents of young kids. The park is extremely affordable, with no admission fee and tickets only 25 cents a piece. All the rides cost one ticket, and the duck game costs two. My son tried one ride after watching other kids on it, but he immediately hated it after it started. We told the ride attendant and she stopped the ride, telling the other kids to stay in their seats while she helped my son off. I appreciated how quickly this was handled, without any judgment or shame. Unfortunately my son refused to try any of the other rides, as they are very similar (going around in a circle), but he still enjoyed the duck game and the Perry's ice cream, which was our biggest expense at the park but not outrageous. For older folks (ages 8+), there's skee ball, and people of all ages can ride the carousel. There's a magic show everyday starting at 2 pm, but we didn't stay to see it since we needed to start our drive home. Bathrooms are very clean, and they have rocking chairs for parents with babies, plus a fenced off area for nursing moms. The park is open Memorial Day through Labor Day. Even though the rides were not a hit with my kiddo this year, we'd like to come back next summer since he still had a positive experience, and it's so affordable. As an added bonus, the lake is a very short walk away.

25 cents rides for kids! so cool :)

So glad we made it there before the season ended this year! Cool spot for little kids! Run by volunteers and the rides are only 25 cents each! Such a great deal and kids/toddlers love it! Perfect for a sunny day. Bathrooms are super clean too.

Super cute for the little ones. Highly regret not taking my little guy when he was younger. Great day trip from the Buffalo Suburbs.

We had a great time today. For $5 our two kids road all the rides and a couple twice. I got to play some old school skee ball because my kids weren't old enough. And we all had some ice cream. There was also a magic show. The kids said it was the "best day". :-)

Olcott Beach Carousel Park is right on Lake Ontario, and yards away from the Lakefront Shoppes.

I'm torn between wishing this small amusement park and Olcott Beach in general drew a larger crowd and appreciating that it isn't swarmed with visitors. It's definitely for smaller children. I wish we moved here sooner because our five year olds probably only have another year or two of enjoyment ahead, but what a great place! All rides are merely a quarter. They include the main carousel that parents can ride as well, a small ferris wheel, planes that rise, boats that rock, cars, and rocket ships. Our twins were able to ride everything, including the planes twice, for $4. Concessions are inexpensive, too. The park is open weekends starting Memorial Day Weekend from noon to 6. I think it's open everyday from July through September. It might be dog friendly, too. We noticed water dishes and a bin of dog biscuits inviting people to take one. Well worth a day trip from Buffalo or maybe even Rochester because there's also a small beach and the Lakefront Shoppes, as well as Krull Park a short drive away. After we spent an hour at the carousel park we played along the shore of Lake Ontario before taking the boys to cool off at the Krull Park splash pad. Perfect afternoon!

We come yearly for Christmas in July. The kids love the rides and all of the local businesses are great. It's our new tradition.

Downtown Markham is relatively new. The Pride of Canada carousel took roughly $30 million to create, thanks to a public art initiative and The Remington Group. There are so many cool aspects of this carousel. It is open year-round thanks to it being inside glass walls with a roof. The carousel features 44 characters created by Patrick Amiot, a junk-art sculptor, and painted by his wife, Brigitte Laurent. Daniel Horenberger created the ride's structure. The characters were crafted from recycled and repurposed items collected across Canada. There is a free outdoor skating rink. It's a good location, as there are many places to eat and drink, and warm up afterwards. The carousel requires getting a ticket to ride it. It's $3 for one ride. You save more when you get more tickets. It's $5 for 2 tickets. If you love riding this carousel, go for $20 for 10 tickets, which is the best bang for your money. One of these days, I'll go ride it. I always marvel at it when I'm stopped at the lights in my car. I want to ride in circles instead! (392)

The downtown area is still pretty sad but the renovations done here is pretty legit - easily making it one of the better things to do in the city. There's a few things to do around canal side. You can bike, walk, paddleboard / water activities. There are benches for you to sit on and a decent amount of grass to lay on and even have a picnic. When I came there was a Buffalo Bills boat parade to get ready for the season where there was a bunch of drunk old white men trying to out drink each other and yelling at each other. As you continue down the boardwalk there was a horse merry go-round and a sand pit for children to experience the "beach." I was in the area so I stopped by but I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to visit if you're out of town. There are adjacent parks near it but unless you're biking in the day or on the water, it's simply an okay spot. Parking like most of this city is a nightmare. Found parking on the street near an apartment complex. Lucked out and only had to walk 20 minutes to go to canalside. The other parking would add another 10 minutes to your walk.

After I imbibed at Old Flame Brewing Co., I explored The Distillery Historic District where it was located for a leisurely first evening in Toronto. Over 20 years ago, a small group of visionary developers looked at a derelict collection of Victorian Industrial buildings that had been pronounced a national historic site and imagined transforming it. They wanted to create a place that would excite and inspire the senses. Where people could experience new ideas, new foods, new designs and new ways of living and working. The vision was to combine the romance and relaxing atmosphere of European walking and patio districts with the hip, cool dynamic of an area like New York City's SoHo or Chelsea, where creative minds got together and you felt as if anything could happen. Their dream was to provide a place where artists, artisans, entrepreneurs and businesspeople could rub shoulders and inspire each other. So, they began plans to restore the 47 buildings known as the Gooderham & Worts Distillery. They went to great lengths in the restoration process to repurpose original materials and brilliantly blend them with today's modern materials and green technologies. One could only marvel at the authentic exterior restoration that was achieved. But it was when you stepped inside the buildings that you truly realized the magnitude of what was accomplished. What you found was a dramatic fusion of old and new. An inspired blend of Victorian Industrial architecture and stunning 21st century design and creativity. The result was an internationally acclaimed village of one-of-a-kind stores, shops, galleries, studios, restaurants, cafes, theatres and more. The Distillery Historic District opened in 2003 and today is widely regarded as Canada's premier arts, culture and entertainment destination. A place brimming with creativity and creative people, that could inspire dreams, and a place that could help them come true. Was history on my side to revisit this district that actually had a distillery shop onsite that I missed!? PURCHASE(S) (N/A): I spent some money at Old Flame Brewing Co. (read my review of that) but nowhere else, and certainly nothing directly with the facility itself. Of course, you had ample opportunity to spend your money with other businesses or onsite parking, or simply nothing at all as you just hung out. EXPERIENCE I lazily walked throughout the premises as I checked out the storefronts of mostly closed businesses for the night, people-watched, but mainly admired several art displays https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=24&select=1tmuPlZ1LXRKNJC6ViM-vw and enjoyed the nice cool evening weather. SERVICE Besides the employees who worked inside the various businesses and possibly a guard who managed the parking lots, there were no other services available. At this time of night, I didn't see any cleaning crew or security staff - "nuff said. PARKING (Varied; N/A this instance): It was a flat 15-minute walk from my Airbnb. Otherwise, there were both onsite and offsite lots, numerous public transportation options, and rideshares - 'nuff said. ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE A large outdoor area filled with 19th-Century buildings repaired and repurposed to house new businesses https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=24&select=fGw7y2G0RTwKqQnQ6VEynA with walking paths https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=24&select=xf2flq93fGxjt4L2oJAhmw and open sections for gatherings and live entertainment, and a decent amount of places to sit. Plenty of natural lighting since you were completely outside while a ton of various electric lights and those along the street filled in the rest. There were no TVs on the exterior while the only background noise were the sounds of passing vehicles and the chatter of patrons. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=24&select=oF-rbwyZqdtP9nryC8CVRA ATTIRE Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops. OVERALL The Distillery Historic District was very cool, and I would gladly visit it again the next time I was in Toronto. There were so many things to try and take part in given a full day. There were enough varied businesses to spread the money around... or simply just chill. And, I always loved supporting small businesses and efforts whenever possible. I found complete value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $0.00 BEFORE any discounts and/or tip). And, many of businesses accepted my credit card of choice... AMEX! 5.0 STARS

I admired the aromatic aster and had to stop to take a photo. So pretty! The tall trees make me think that this playground has been established for years. However, the climbing structures and splash pads indicate that this park has had a facelift recently. I liked seeing swings, both traditional and saucer-shaped. It's not a playground if there aren't any swings in my books. There was also a spinning rope pyramid, which looked challenging to me, let alone kids. This playground also has a splash pad. It looks like it has a cascading water feature to it, which would be great to cool off on hot summer days. This playground has a drinking fountain and a bottle-filling station.
