Went here last week and haven't been since elementary school. If you love local history and 1800's American history this is so worth the experience. Not everything is open due to it being volunteer operated and the Halloween pumpkin light up they're doing but you can still kill 3-4 hours on a beautiful day walking the grounds and walking with the staff. They're all so knowledgeable and answer any questions you have. Even my annoying ones like "what's your most haunted experience?" Which there are a few! For two people it was $30 bucks and if you haven't been in a while and are looking for a nice historic stroll in 1800's Long Island it is well well worth it! read more

All this time I've lived on Long Island and I've never been here. I'm glad we finally took a day to walk through and enjoy it. It was a nice fall day when we went and we had a good time walking through each old house and learning about its rich history. The grounds are large, and well kept, and most of the people there were full of information and tid-bits about what life was like back then. We even found out there's a new TV show from the time period being partially filmed there, which we thought was pretty cool. We walked through several homes, the schoolhouse, the old tavern, the general store, the farm area, and the weaver. Our only disappointment was that some of the houses and establishments were closed, and I sort of feel like if you're paying to get in and see this stuff, they should warn you if a number of them are closed for the day. Overall we really had a good time taking the leisurely walk through everything. It's a wonderful place to spend a day, especially if you're into history and experiencing a little of what the local Long Islanders lived long ago. read more

They had a fair the day we went. It was fri-sun however they didn't have all the vendors there. What they did have was a giant high dive show a circus (it was very entertaining- a duo juggling tight rope and acrobat) a petting zoo and a Ferris wheel. There was a fee for the Ferris wheel $5 per person They had an old fashioned merry go round for the kids. They enjoyed that and the ventriloquist show. This is a lovely historic site. We had a couple hours to kill and it was nearby. I wish we had more time. The buildings are accurately restored to original time period and volunteers in each building are enthusiastic about sharing the history. There is a man in the hatter building who creates and sells period hats using the old process. Very interesting place and also a nice walk through nature. Not expensive either. read more

I've been here several times before for the village but, this is the first time I've come for a wedding. My cousin had his wedding here at "The Barn" and I have to say it was a lot of fun. The venue is exactly as advertised...a barn but, fully redone. The "bones" of the barn are exposed and give a charming atmosphere that you don't expect. The acoustics are surprisingly good and the food is quite good. With extras like a cigar station, a well appointed full bar, and a rustic themed decor that works make this a great venue if you want something a bit different from the usual reception hall. read more

I never knew this place existed until I was in the area and looked for things to do nearby on Google maps. I quickly researched the place and saw some great reviews. I have been to a few of these villages in the past (Allaire in NJ and Sturbrudge in MA) and loved them both. I decided to give it a try since I had some time to kill as traffic going back west was terrible. I arrived at around 1 PM on an 85-degree and sunny Friday and the place was pretty empty. The parking lot is huge, but I'm sure it fills up as we approach the summer weekends. There is a visitor center/entrance with a few indoor exhibits and some interesting facts about the village itself and how it was constructed. The ticket counter is also there. An adult ticket is reasonably priced at $15 in person, but you can buy it online in advance for little cheaper ($12.50) from their website. Children tickets are about $12 in person and $9.50 online in advance. The counter staff were friendly and efficient. In that area, there were lots of picnic table seating, both indoor and outdoor. I'm not sure if that area is opened since COVID, but no one was there at the time. After entering the village area, there is a large field where I found out has baseball games from time to time. The central village area has lots of "houses" each staffed with workers who give you a little tour and tell you a bit about the history of the house and its inhabitants. There are other houses for special skills or crafts; blacksmith, hat maker, general stores and others. Staff is these houses will explain a bit about their craft and give demonstrations. There is a farm area there where I saw workers working, but I don't think there is much you can do there. There is also an area with a barn and animals. That entire section has pigs, sheep, cows, chickens, turkeys, geese, ducks and goats. At the time, I would say about 70% of the houses in the entire village were opened. I understand more are opened during the weekend and special events. All staff were knowledgeable, patient and friendly. I can tell that they have a passion for history and teaching. There is so much to see and learn throughout the village. I would highly recommend this place to people of all ages. Especially those kids and adults interested in history. It's a great way to get the kids out the house for an educational experience and away from screens for a little while. I would love to return during of the special events or reenactments. There is a gift shop in the visitor/entrance center but it was closed when I was leaving at around 3:30 PM. I don't remember seeing any food options...though I did see a sign for vending machines but I'm not sure what were in those. Wear comfortable shoes...the terrain is grass, dirt and gravel, which is also good to know for those with strollers or wheelchairs. read more

On a recent trip to visit family on Long Island we decided to spend a few hours at Old Bethpage Village. Not all of the houses are open everyday but most were open the day we were there (it was a weekday before most schools in the area had gotten out for summer, I would imagine those things effect how open/staffed they are). Most of the employees who were working in each house were super friendly and shared a lot of interesting information. A few seemed to be miserable being there but it is what it is. The houses have so many details and interesting things to see. There are also some animals and even old time baseball games you can watch. Make sure to wear comfy shoes, there are some areas where you end up walking through uneven grass or dirt. Overall it an interesting place to spend a few hours and learn about Long Island history. read more

I had my wedding at the barn on 7/31/21. I had the best experience here and have been getting nonstop compliments on the venue, the food, the decor, the service. It was absolutely amazing from start to finish. The big day was a huge success which I can honestly attribute to working with Emily Virgil, the sales manager. I truly cannot say enough good things about her. Emily was my point person for everything for eleven months. She was extremely professional, kind, overly accommodating and always steered me in the right direction. I was anxious for much of the planning and reached out to Emily frequently. She always responded promptly with a positive attitude and had an answer to all my questions. Emily coordinated with all my vendors effortlessly and knew all my wedding details like the back of her hand. Working with her I truly felt comfortable and reassuring. The barn is full of raw beauty while at the same time is a perfect blank slate to create any vision. The food was great in regards to quality and taste. The options of fun, creative add ons and cocktail hour stations really wowed my guests. I had a south of the border station, mac and cheese station, shipwreck seafood station, Chinese food station. I had added Ralph's ices station to dessert as well as a white castle take away station for guests go grab on their way out. Everyone loved it! This venue is absolutely amazing. My only negative feedback is that it is confusing for guests to find the barn the day of the party. My only recommendation is that they do more to make it easier for guest to find. I also feel it is important to mention that Lessings covid policy is the best out there in regards to the pandemic. Knowing that I would be fully refunded if I needed to cancel or could switch the date without being penalized was extremely reassuring during these unprecedented times. This was my initial reason for looking up Lessings venues to begin with prior to falling in love with the barn. The company itself as well as the wonderful staff really make you feel taken care of and did right by their brides, which is why I felt so strongly about leaving this review. 9.24.17. Bethpage Restoration My friend Mike took me here for birthday gift to experience this old time Fair. I didn't know what quite to expect, I've been here previously but when there are no events it's pretty much a ghost town. But with very cool ghosts. They really do hang out here they feel more comfortable in this place Frozen in time, familiar to them. Enough with Halloween ghost stories on with the review! There were a number of different attractions here including a reenactment of the Spanish American conflict which featured Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders. With the horses and swords and everything. Each little historic house in the village was no longer empty reposing in.. "The Winds of time". The folks that had lived here seemed to come back alive to tell the stories of their lives and dreams. We learned of how the local library was once contained in a small box, we listened to beautiful fiddle music. Folks in period clothing walked among the quaint homes, as if the spirits of these early homesteaders themselves had returned. At the top of the hill was a exciting display featuring old military tanks and vehicles. A wonderfully knowledgeable gentleman we will call him Gunny. His face weathered with experience, he told the stories of how most of the machines in his custody where working and operative. My friend Mike wanted to drive one of the old Sherman tanks he said it was pretty similar to a caterpillar. Gunny laughed and said he didn't sell tickets for that yet. We Spent hours walking around, was pretty hot day for September in the 80s. Good thing I Like It Hot. I recommend the fair very much to anyone that wants to step back in time and see the sights and sounds of yesteryear. We came to the restoration during the County Fair, so the experience is probably different than the normal experience. We parked at an office building off the LIE and loaded into school buses to get go the place. It was pretty well run. We went in and walked by a bunch of stands with information and selling items. The old baseball field was on the left, but there was no game going. We passed by some guys that looked like Rough Riders running drills and some old timey game booths. There were all the old buildings and shops. People dressed for the period. There were things that probably aren't normally there. There were pig races, food tents, a petting zoo, diving show and a small circus. I believe the barns and horses are normally there. The old village is definitely always there. We walked around the old area and they do a nice job. We had a young baby with us, so it isn't the most stroller friendly place. People had a great time. Everyone there seemed to be having a good time. Also, big thanks to the bus driver who helps get our stuff on the bus with the baby. Worth the check out. read more

This was the second time I have visited Old Bethpage Village on a trip to NY from AZ It was so unbearably hot and humid the first time I visited, I could not wait to get back when the weather was nice... so, this time the weather was perfect, but I was limited for time and could not walk the entire village. Maybe my third time will be a charm??? I certainly hope so! :) Anyway, the village is so adorably quaint and well appointed that it does not take much for you to be brought back in time. I am a history buff and I think they do a fantastic job with period specific furniture and accessories. The staff is very friendly and will answer any and all of your questions. The grounds are pristine and the buildings are kept beautifully. The only criticisms I would have are: *Need more stations to purchase drinking water. It's a large park and there is a lot of walking. To backtrack to the first drinking station is time consuming and you miss out on a lot. *The gift shop could to a MUCH better job stocking mementos and/or books. Right now, it seems all they have are little baskets and kids toys - which both appear to be low end. I was prepared to spend $$$$ on souvenirs, but walked out of there hands free. read more

Old Time Village - recreation. While not as authentic as Old Williamsburg down in Virginia this is a collection of buildings that have been moved here from all over Long Island. I originally visited this place a few years ago during one of their many festivals. If you're into "going back in time" you'll have a good time here. Lots of little shops, the entire staff is in character, it can be pretty fun. Overall, in my opinion, it's more boring than fun but that's just me. I returned here for the haunted flea market. This took place on a cold, windy day in a large building on-site. I did purchase a few items that were pretty cool but they definitely need to find a larger space if they plan to do this again next year. read more

My friends and I went here to try the Escape Room and to see the Village with the admission. The price of $32 is similar to other Escape Rooms on LI, but we wanted to enjoy the village also. Unfortunately it was hot, humid and sticky outside and only one of the houses had any AC for relief. The parking lot had less than 20 cars, so we knew it would be a day with few people visiting. The Village has numerous buildings with authentic furnishings and exteriors from the 1800s. Some of them have employees garbed in Colonial outfits who speak about life back then. Some were way more personable than others. (No further comment on that.) The Escape Room was a great experience! Only one person on our group had ever done one, so we were novices for sure. It was a very fun experience and Jay was our "host" and tip giver to guide us when needed. I can't give away any hints, but it was definitely a fun activity for the 8 of us. We ESCAPED! read more

So basically my review is because they wouldn't let us in. We have been in NY state for a month, but do not have NY state ID, so they wouldn't let us in. The messed up part is that this is almost entirely outdoors. But the even better part is that the other negative reviews I'm seeing are that they aren't doing a great job of enforcing social distancing or mask wearing. But THIS they enforce. Maybe they think if they enforce this they don't have to be too strict with distancing and mask wearing? Not sure. It is most likely the same as every other place and the employees and volunteers are just scared of confrontation. Anyway, we are just really angry because we drove an hour to get here and have been looking forward to it. The website wasn't clear that this attraction is only for NY state residents. You have to read like three pages before you get there. My suggestion is making it big and bold "this attraction is ONLY for New York State residents" and put that first in the list. Maybe also next to the place to click to buy tickets? That will weed out some people right off the bat. Anyway they said they would give a full refund, so at least we get that. I am hoping the refund includes the taxes and fees. It's worth mentioning they were professional and kind, we were just really frustrated by the whole thing. read more

Very good park to visit in Old Bethpage where one can step back in time to the 1800s. Large place where you can wander around, go inside one of the many historic homes and speak to one of the many villagers in full costume who will tell you about each one of the restored structures. I recently had an AWESOME experience here during this past weekend's Long Island Fair. Between the Village and the Fairgrounds, there is so much to see and do. When we entered the fair around 12, we walked into the Old Time Baseball game that was being held. This is thoroughly entertaining for all, especially fans of modern baseball that want to be taken back to a simpler time. Next we walked into the fairgrounds, and checked out the arts and crafts that were on display from contests and for sale. I found the artwork very interesting to look at, as you could see so many POVs at once. Then we made our way over to the circus tent and enjoyed a little show, although it was mighty humid in the tent, so we decided to venture into the village. In the village, we first wandered into the Inn, and after into the saloon where we ordered root beer and ginger ale. We were subsequently chased by yellow jackets who were thirsting for our sugary drinks! After ditching the drinks, we made our way up to the military section where people could get a tank ride if they so wished! We spent a lot of time going in and out of the different houses and businesses in the village, and the ones I found most interesting were the school, the hat shop, the general store, the blacksmith, the fisherman's house, and Peter Cooper's home! (With a loom in the living room haha) I'm sorry, but each building came with a name and information about who lived in there. I have a hard time remembering, there was so much to absorb. BUT, this is a good thing, because I am really excited to visit again and ask so many more questions. For anyone who loves history, this is a MUST visit place. I highly recommend, and I look forward to coming back next year! read more

Absolutely loved this place! It is a huge park with various houses set up like an old village. The staff is dressed in the manner of the 19th century America and is very knowledgeable on the history of that time. All are very friendly and are happy to answer any questions you have. There is a huge garden towards the back of the village with all kinds of fruit and vegetables growing. Just a beautiful afternoon spent here. Will definitely be back! read more

I'm sitting here with my glass of vino winding down after having a good old-fashioned Halloween scare thanks to Fear Fest. I'm sure this is a lovely "The Village" type setting during the day, but they have done a really super job transforming what I assume is the Town Hall into a horror house. We brought a friend visiting from Germany and her response was "I was so scared, I couldn't speak in English." My inner Jamie Lee Curtis was unleashed as people jumped out at every turn as strobe lights were flashing. What really got me was the man with the chainsaw and blood-soaked apron who chased me through three rooms. What got my boyfriend S, who suffers from extreme coulrophobia, was the oversized death clown with a knife. He actually tried to sidle across a wall and as a result tripped and fell over a prop fence. (Pause from being scared here to laugh, because people falling is always funny). Admission is only $12 to scream, stumble and swat dead bodies out of your way. i couldn't be more in the Halloween spirit now unless i had a fun-size bag of M&M's!! read more

My fiancée and I were looking at the Barn at the Old Bethpage Restoration Village for our wedding ceremony. We loved the charm of the space, on top of the fact that it was large enough to accommodate our guests; it was a perfect fit. We visited the space on Sunday morning. We were given a tour of the grounds and some of the paperwork required for booking the venue. We express our interest in the space and that we were sold on using the venue. We were explicitly told that they would hold our date for a week. I called back on Tuesday morning to finalize the date but their phone system was a disaster. No one was there to answer and the message box was full. I attempted the same on Wednesday and the same issue occurred, but I finally got through. I was told that Liz, the women in charge of booking, was gone for the day, and that I should call back the following day. When I finally got through on Thursday, I told them I wanted to finalize the booking of the Barn, but I was told my date had just been booked by another couple though an offsite caterer. You can imagine my confusion as I reiterated the fact that she had told us only five days prior that they would hold our date for a week's time. She explained to me that a couple had given a deposit to an offsite caterer on the spot (in the days following our visit) and that because of this they had priority. I asked her then why she would have told us that the venue would hold our date for the week if the business was in the habit of shifting priority in conditions like these. She simply stated that she "TRIED to hold the date." TRIED??? What does that even mean TRIED. Had she not LIED to us and simply not said she could reserve our date, I would have gone to the bank and returned with a deposit immediately. This is, to put it lightly, not the way a business should be run, and tantamount to a complete sham. This will be the last time I will ever entertain the idea of visiting the Old Bethpage Restoration Village. read more

I really love the place. The historic buildings are so nice to tour and the farm is a favorite for the kids. I would like to see more fully battle reenactments for other periods other than civil war which they have periodically I can't give 5 stars because there are not enough bathrooms for the giant area the grounds cover and the bug bites are just ouch. The root beer at the Inn is delicious. Check with your library to see if they offer free passes before going as the village is a tad pricey. WOW! It was beautiful to walk into the building and be greeted with the most beautiful Christmas music carolers with people representing all. Saw many friends and neighbors this place is popular. You walk through a large property illuminated with candlelight and you can see the way the village was back in the day. Each house represents a different line of work ( Dr, Blacksmith ) There are spots for snacks, hot cider and cookies. All personell are dressed from back in the times and know their part well. Although this place cannot hold a candle to Williamsburg, Va., you have to remember that although Long Island has it's own history, it does not have the same sort of history as Williamsburg, but still, you are able to travel back to the mid 19th century with a visit here. I recently had the opportunity to chaperone my little boy's class on a field trip here. We walked around for a few hours and got to see old stage coach's, large draft horses pulling the coach's, they had sack races and old houses of notable area residents -- they even had a working recreation of a blacksmith shop which is always fun to see (who doesn't like to see fire and things being forged of metal?) There were other sights I would have like to of seen, and some of the sights were closed for renovation. None-the-less, the kids seemed to have enjoyed it. Apparently they have a halloween celebrations here and I suppose other holiday happens as time gets closer to the season. Perhaps we will go back to visit come holiday time. Just remember, it is not Williamsburg, and quite frankly, for the most part, it really shouldn't try to be -- two totally different locales. read more

I have been coming here since I was a child. I stopped going around 1997 and came back yesterday. It still holds its magic after all of these years. I went for the Long Island Fair event which touts people in old school regalia as well as rides and different events. It cost $15 for an adult. I arrived in a dusty parking lot where I then transferred to a school bus for a short ride to the event site. People were walking it as well. I would say go for the bus if you have children. Walked in and received a map and an event page. The place is clean. Period. No garbage anywhere. The site is lined with vendors ranging from Djembe drums to socks. Very quirky and cool trinkets to pick up. You can then venture any way you choose. I found myself upon a magic show which was in full swing. Plenty of vendors for food. I found the infamous turkey leg which I had imagined they would have. A beer vendor was just a short ways away. Everything is moderately priced if not somewhat inflated. The beer was $7, the leg was $8. They have a wide variety of food options ranging from meat to vegetables. Lots of wandering is advised. I stumbled upon an old schoolhouse where a gentleman gave me a tour and a great fiddle player was playing outside. I then made my way to the leather craftsman. Very nice gentleman willing to take time to explain how things were made. There are plenty of events and they did a great job of explaining where the next one was going on after the current one ended. Restrooms are porta potties and they are scattered throughout the entire site. You have to search them out but the people volunteering will steer you in the right direction. It was extremely well run. Everyone there is informative. I urge you to go and explore for yourself. If you have kids, this is a must. read more

I basically live for halloween and I really loved their halloween season event. The property and houses are beautiful, and at night its really dark and spooky! Its not the typical haunted house attraction, it's very family friendly, but my boyfriend and I thoroughly enjoyed it as adults with no kids. The ghost tour was interesting, and the tour guide played us some EVP'S at the end that were pretty creepy. All in all, not a bad way to kill a few hours on an autumn night. read more

I've been coming here regularly (at least 4 times a year) since I was a kid. I'm 28 now! I will never get enough of this place. The highlights for me are the holiday events. Halloween is crazy, and the Restoration is open after dark. There are lots of people, it is spooky and fun for kids and adults alike (did I mention I go 4-5 times a year, with another adult? I don't even bring kids with me!). Christmas is lovely, again it is open after dark and everyone walks around with lanterns and flashlights. There is also a traditional Thanksgiving celebration. You really learn a lot about the period and the lives of the actual people who lived in the respective homes. A lot of the families have names you'll recognize, like Hewlett, for example. The homes are all from Long Island and are restored. EVERY SINGLE PERSON on the grounds is a volunteer. Volunteers run the place, sew and make the costumes, act out period trades and jobs such as haberdashery, blacksmithing, farming, baseball, etc. The restoration has had a hard time getting funded. They have some lovely farm animals, but do sometimes sell their pigs and hogs to a butcher so they can buy new ones. The farmer who takes care of them loves them and has been there for years. He is there all winter, when the Restoration is closed to the public, to take care of t he animals. They now have an organic farm on the premisis, I know someone who volunteers on it. You can buy the local produce they grow! This is really a wonderful place, year-round, and I'm sure it can't compare to Williamsburg, but this is right here on Long Island, run by Long Island and held together by volunteers who love Long Island and love the Restoration. This place really is priceless. I hope it's around when I have kids! read more

For sentimental reasons I am giving OBVR 2 stars...I have been coming here since I was little...However....I can't help but think the same thing every time I am here...They could do so much more with this place! They have old homes and items in them but if you want to learn about life lived years ago...go to Old Williamsburg. I went yesterday with my family. Most of the actors/villagers did not seem to have a good grip on history they just seem to kind of blurt out a script..One man sitting in a barn looked like he was studying for school and never even looked up at us??? We were not sure what many of the household items were and there was no one offering any information?? Visiting OBVR means a LOT of walking and Sun. They have picnic tables, you can bring food/drink/cooler etc...Strollers and wagons ok. Bring what you need...they do not offer food, (unless you think birch beer in a dixie cup and a cookie is food). Think shade for the little ones since it can get very hot in the summer! This was a nice walk for the day and we got to see some animals..maybe by the time I visit again in 10 years they will improve some...?? Maybe? We went for 4th of July, they had an old time ball game, parade, etc...they have events for holidays but the crowds made it not worth it...the events are just ok... read more

I have to straighten out some thins d.e. wrote above. i work at the Restoration, and we are not open on Halloween night. We're only open at night during Candlelight Evenings, which are between Christmas and New Year, and we're closed during the day on those nights. Also everyone at OBVR is not a volunteer. Long story short I came here in a school field trip about 15 years ago when I was in middle school and it was the best field trip ever! Everything from the people in character to the history and the real life feeling was just amazing. It makes you feel like you just went into a time travel machine back in time and lived it. This is a long island staple! I like to come here and walk around. Sometimes you catch an old time baseball game and get some roasted peanuts. I also love the old school sarsaparilla soda and sourdough pretzels. It's a nice relaxing place where you can pretend you live in the old days on the farm. read more

Nice time with friends. Good set up and value. More than enough to do and no real lines. They give you a time slot for spooky tour and you go do other things while that time winds away. Bounce houses n stuff. read more
