When my swim class cancelled, I don't receive any notification, no ph calls, no texts, no emails, plus the swim department never returns ph calls, never reply to emails, when I show up at the swim class only to turn around and go home. This happened not once, not twice, but 3 times! I think the head of swim dept should quit, this is culture, don't blame on high sch kids. The front desk always busy, no calls can get thru! My son took a two week swim class over the summer and not once did the instructors enter the pool or provide any instructions on technique or anything else. They just sent the kids up and down the lanes keeping them busy. Hey, I paid for a swim class not for baby sitting. Is it too much to expect that the kids are actually taught something? The class was a total waste of money. I can also confirm the comment by a fellow reviewer about lack of communication when classes are cancelled. Just happened to me as well. Drove 20 minutes to the facility just to hear that class is cancelled. Is it so hard to send out a push notification so people don't waste their time and gas when classes are cancelled? read more

So far so good. For those that have never been to a Y for the purpose of getting in a workout but have used traditional gyms, there are normally quite a few differences. Some good some just ok. I'll speak about that shortly. The facility itself is fairly new - 2009 I believe and overall all very clean. The staff seems to be pretty good too. I've only engaged with the front desk, some lifeguards and a hello here and there with some other staff. The one person I dealt with at the front desk (first over the phone, then in person) is fantastic - Gabby (sp?). She knows how everything works in terms of memberships, facilities, and the overall YMCA experience and is genuinely kind and willing to help, super customer service! I signed up on the spot, it's really not that expensive and I get access to 2 facilities, OB and Freehold (which has a lot more amenities) as well as a nationwide network - still don't know which centers specifically are included in that tho. It's month to month and there are no contracts or additional fees, but there is process to terminate your membership, such as requesting by a certain time of the month. The price for a family is almost the same price that I pay for myself at NYSC and once you factor in the yearly dues etc at NYSC, probably a wash. Cost aside, the Y may or may not provide you with everything you need in a gym however. The amount of free weights for instance is significantly less than you would find in a traditional gym. Machines for weight lifting are not as abundant as well but they basically have at least one of each that you may be used to. As for treadmills, elliptical and those sort of machines, I think they have a fair amount and their equipment seems to be very current and all in working condition. They actually have a cycling machine (2 of them) that I have never seen in any other gym which I became an instant fan of. This gym has a full sized pool with lifeguards and is primarily why I even looked outside of my current gym. NYSC offers a pool at the Marlboro location but I think this one blows it away, plus the Freehold Y that I now have access to has at least 3 pools, some indoor and some outdoor that I have full access to as well. There is a full gym for basketball (they have leagues you can sign up for) and 2 studios for a wide variety of classes that are all included in the cost of your monthly membership. While the NYSC in Matawan has racquetball which I am a big fan of and the Old Bridge Y does not have a court, the Freehold Y does have racquetball so despite a longer ride, I can maintain that activity as well. All in all, this is a great option for me personally, it has all of the tools I need for the type of workout and training that I am currently participating in. The price is fine and the location is close. I've been on the weekend only so far but will be attending early in the morning and after work to see what the crowd is like at all different times of the day/week. For me I give the OB YMCA a solid thumbs up! read more

Although the facility is very modern and clean for the most part, the customer service at this YMCA is ABYSMAL. I have been a member for over a year. It has ALWAYS been an issue to register my child for summer camp there. Their process makes absolutely no sense. Here is what happened this year: At the begining of the summer I went to the facility to register for camp. I was told they were full, but to leave my name and number and someone would call me when space became available. Guess what? No one ever called. (The same thing happened last summer as well) Mid-summer, I went to the facility to ask about registering my son for the last two weeks of the summer, because there would be a 2 week gap between the summer program I had put him in (East Brunswick Parks and Rec- fabulous program) and the start of school. Since I was going well in advance, i though there would be no issues. I was told that I had to come in the wednesday prior to the week I needed child care to register him, I couldnt do it that far in advance. So, I waited. The Wednesday prior to the week I needed care, I went to the facility AGAIN to register him for summer camp. I was ignored by a snotty woman. After standing around, a younger girl came to my aid. After explaining what I needed, I got the SAME song and dance I always get. :Oh, the program is full, but leave your name and number and someone will call you". I asked to speak to a supervisor. I was directed to the woman who had ignored me and explained what I needed. Same story: You need to leave your name and number and someone will call you. AT that point, I was frustrated and said I wanted to cancel my membership and get a refund for a credit I had (prior swim lessons that my son had taken, where the instructor didn't show up a bumch of times). I was told I would not get a refund. I walked out fuming. THAT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. The Raritan YMCA, although not as 'state of the art' has an AMAZING summer program, and this is how easy it is to register: You go to the front desk, say which week you need care, pay, are given a receipt, DONE. And they are always friendly, polite, and happy to help. Raritan is farther for me than Old Bridge, but is BETTER in terms of customer service and summer camp registration. I dont understand what their problem is. Some of the front desk staff is rude, another issue I had was with the lifeguards at the pool. I stayed in the pool area to watch my son while swimming and the two lifeguards there spent an entire hour flirting and talking to each other instead of watching the people in the pool. SO, "state of the art" is not always better. I have seen how Old Bridge YMCA responds to complaints on their FB page so i'm just waiting for their defensive response to this review. I am going to register my kid for a class to use up my credit and then i am cancelling my membership. read more

Well I want to leave this place because of how much they charge, however they do have a lot to offer. I've been going here for a few years now and was only paying $30. Actually it started at forty something then went to like $35 then down to thirty. So I wasn't going to complain that it was dropping until I got my June statement and I was charged $47. I asked why I now am paying $47 and wasn't notified of the increase. She asked me my age and I told her thirty and she said "that's why. Bc you are in a different age bracket." Seriously?!?!? So once you are thirty you get charged $47 and that's the single residence price. Now that I'm thirty do I take up more space or something??? Anyway, I emailed the CEO and she just forward it to someone else who claims the increase was posted in the facility, on the website, and all the once young adults groups got an email in which I did not. I complained bc the contract states they will notify you at your address of any pay changes. Well they did not but I wasn't fighting. They do have a lot though. They have a bunch of classes, pool, hot tub, sauna and steam room, lots of treadmills, weights and weight machines. They did get rid of a lot of really good instructors though. The women's changing room is kinda gross. Usually smells bad in there. They used to have a female cleaning lady in there all the time but not anymore. All in all it's an ok place. It's about five min from me ad sometimes there is a lot of traffic but I go at least three times a week so I guess in only paying $4 every time I go really. read more

This place is great for when you just want to go for a swim or exercise. The instructors are nice and the facilities are clean. This a great place for kids too; I have been taking my kids there for years. They also enjoy the basketball court. Overall, love this place. read more

The ymca is great for children, they have interactive classes and keeps kids motivated. My kids have taken a few classes and loved especially the swimming. My only disappointment is the classes get filled up so quickly, didn't get a chance to put one of my girls in a swimming class. So it seems unfair that one gets to swim and the other one does not. I would recommend the YMCA and this location in particular as the staff are friendly and there is a lot offered here. My only ask is having longer hours during the weekends but I understand this is a YMCA. The majority of the staff are knowledgeable and helpful and it does not get too busy during the weekday/weekend evenings so you don't feel crammed or as though you cannot get a machine. Lot of classes are offered but the majority of them are during the morning/day times. I don't consider looking into other gym memberships because I am happy with this place and would recommend it to others. read more

This is my local YMCA that I go to nearly every day. Overall, the gym is a great value for the money and I thoroughly enjoy the steam room, sauna, and three pools. However, since I joined for the basketball court, I was disappointed to see the court is made of a rubbery material, and is not hardwood. The court is often slippery and overrun with high school students in the after-school hours. The staff is friendly and helpful overall. read more

Just went after their "shut down renovation week" and somehow they managed to make the place worse. They spent thousands of dollars on treadmills that connect to smart phones with an app just so teenage girls can brag about their workouts rather then address the much needed lack of practical weight machines. The current cypex machines are awful. The new layout is crammed and actually presents a safety hazard. I foresee an incident where people bump into each other mid set. It's a shame the staff is nice and the facility is clean but either corporate or management is clueless. They seem to think more cardio equipment is the answer. It's great now that people have more empty machines separating each other that aren't in use. I'm not expecting this place to produce a future Mr Olympia, but at least get some good machines that give people a chance at getting some real results. I thought the idea of renovations and maintenance is to make things better, not go in the complete opposite direction and make things worse. Hopefully retro does some good things after their renovation and it presents a much better alternative. But on the bright side teenagers can use some smart phone friendly machines and brag to their friends on social media. Isn't that the only reason they work out anyway? read more

I have belonged to pretty much every gym out there and can say for sure that the Old Bridge Y is the best. I've been a member for 4 years & love it. It's my home away from home. It's always very clean & all their fitness instructors are great. Lisa McGovern cares about the members, learns their strengths & weaknesses & figures out ways to help them transform themselves in group classes. I have never found an instructor like her. If you take her classes you'll get amazing results & have a great time!! Also, 2 weeks before my son's bday I felt bad that I hadn't planned a party for him- Brenda said "Don't worry - I got you" and she put together a really fun party for him that he & all of his 25 friends loved!! They played Gaga, did obstacle courses, made ice cream sundaes & had cake. It was great! The staff was wonderful w the kids. I highly recommend the old bridge Y! read more

the gym and the pool is good but the lifeguards are shiit!!!!!. they telling me not do to underwater swim of 2 lenghts but i already did 1 l lenght and im going for 2 lenghts!!!. i did the water bottom bounce for 5 mins and they said i cant do tht casue they dont want to see someone pass out! really!!!!! i did not pass out i was smiling underwater while i was doing it. u lifeguards suck!!!! you dont know me my mentally is stronger than yours. read more
