Tucked away in the back of a small shopping center, the sign along the road was just a generic written sign, not an official logo, so you may drive by it without noticing. Stopped in just to use their showers after a mud run in the area. The showers and locker room (mens) were very clean and well maintained. Didn't seem like a very large facility but looked like it had a lot more lifting equipment than cardio equipment available. If I lived or worked closer to the facility, I would definitely use it as a main place to pick things up and put them down again! read more

This is absolutely the worst gym hands down. I canceled my son's membership in July in person. When I got my credit card statement they charged me for August. Have made numerous phone calls gone in person and have gotten total run around. Will go to bank tomorrow to put stop to this nonsens. A bit frustrated with this location. Morning employee has been late everyday for the past 2 months. Doors are to open at 5 a.m and he doesn't show up until almost 6 a.m. Multiple complaints have been made directly to the owner and still no resolution. Stopped in at the matawan location for a quick workout. I was not greeted by the front desk, actually seen the gentleman on his phone. Which distracted me from clocking in and was never questioned. Went over to the treadmill to start my workout and noticed instantly how filthy this gym is. The air filters and the fans were full of dust. Most of the equipment had trash near them. Maybe I came on a wrong day but this is the first and last time I'll probably visit this location. Also, I was in conversation with another member when I was startled by the owners voice. He didn't seem sober let's just say. I was told his name is Vin and this is his usual behavior. I truly hope this location can get it together. read more

Never was a fan of retro fitnesses but this convenient and very close to my house a feed minutes drive new owner ship has made it feel a bit more like a gym not the typical retro style which I like everything is usually working 99 precent of the time lines aren't so long I recommend if you need a good inexpensive short trip to a gym. read more

I joined Retro Fitness because it offered personal training, needing some external motivation and assistance. Kristin contacted me quickly and set up my first appointment/assessment. I liked her so much that I signed up for the 3x/week for 3 months package. Kristin is VERY knowledgeable, offering a variety of training exercises and movements so I am never bored and my body never knows what we're going to do the next visit. she also explains the rationale behind anything she has me do, which I really appreciate. I am thrilled at the strength I've regained in the short time I've spent with her. Kristin is fun and friendly, and it is so apparent that she loves what she does. I joined Retro several months ago after taking a break during Covid and struggling to get back into it. I met Kristin through the initial overview session they offer and immediately decided I wanted her as a personal trainer. We meet 2x/week where she pushes me such that I've become increasingly stronger and have lost some weight with her guidance. I love working out with Kristin. I have been a member here for many years and I have watched as the facility was less and less kept up- no paper towels, non-functional machines, leaks in the ceiling, etc. I was already starting to consider canceling my membership before the pandemic. The straw that broke the camels back for me was when they started re-charging my card and charged me an annual fee right after the re-opening that nobody was ever told about. No letter phone call or email was received and they just arbitrarily started charging their customers again. That does not seem fair or appropriate at all. Everybody has tough times right now with the Covid so a little respect could go along way. read more

New Retro Fitness Management -- Matawan. Indoor room temperatures are becoming a problem of late especially with season change (May '23). 73-76 is not ideal setting regardless of what owner prefers. If members are voicing their concerns about clammy warm stuffy conditions there must be something wrong -- please listen carefully and do something about it. Saving on energy costs we get it BUT at members expense not cool. It will only frustrate members more and eventually drive folks away. This gym is completely unsanitary. I am a member of retro from the beginning of time. I started going to the Matawan location right before the pandemic because I moved. Currently, I started going back for several weeks and I am there for a lengthy time each time. They do not wipe down the machine at all. I wipe down every machine before and after which is fine but they do not at all. The bathroom is absolutely disgusting. There was unspeakable stuff in the toilet bowels more than once. Horrifying that during these times they are not concerned with cleanliness procedures. read more

i like the location and that the gym is not crowded but the ownership here is doing a poor poor job of keeping this business in shape. in the men's room we have a water faucet that hasn't worked in 9 months. we have two stairmasters that haven't worked in at least 5 months. And what is totally unacceptable, we have a woman cleaning the mens locker room during peak hours. no soap in the receptacle this morning. come on man! this is basic blocking and tackling. get these things taken care of please. read more

I like the changes that are going on with a definitive improvement in the physical environment. There are still some issues inherent to this particular facility- first one is the desk employees. Working a desk is a customer service position. That's the first impression you get upon arrival- put friendly, knowledgeable people in that position. I know people who have left this gym due to front desk personnel. Some of them spend too much time chatting with their friends, are unfriendly or selectively friendly, and several times I've had to interrupt a social conversation to get a drink made. That's a key position and should be treated as such. Second one is the arrangement of the equipment. Who puts a fly machine so close to a seated bench machine so that you have to wait until the fly machine is down to change or add weights to the seated bench? Additionally flipping the bench machines to face the mirrors makes it difficult to get in and out of the machines. The gym is sorely in need of 10 pound plates. I've spent way too much time searching for 10 pound plates which should be plentiful. I've had people waiting for me to finish my sets to get the 10 pound plates. Comparatively inexpensive compared to the new equipment, there's no reason not to have an abundance of those plates. read more

I'm never going back to this gym. Tl;dr iffy gym that is too small and not honest about how to cancel. I was a member for a couple of years and I just liked this place less and less each time I came in. It's far too small and this is painful in the locker room where you're lucky if you can stand without toucing someone else, let alone get changed. When I joined the locker room was larger, but still not big. I have no idea why they would make it smaller but that happened. Not to mention the week I came in when the ceiling tiles were leaking and no one seemed to care. The paper towels and wipe down things are always empty/broken as well so don't forget to bring a towel. On top of this when i tried to cancel, they wanted 2 more months but fine whatever. 2 months later I'm still getting charged and they want to charge me again because I didn't sign paperwork they never gave to me. Why not tell me up front or maybe, ya know, give me the paperwork when I ask to cancel? I was in the gym!! I'm just extremely frustrated with the entire experience. read more

This review is not about the gym itself, but the quality of help I was given. Tonight I decided on checking out the two gyms on Disbrow--Retro and NYSC. Although Retro is indeed smaller than what I had become accustomed to, the girl at the front desk (Angelina B.) was beyond helpful. All the questions I threw her way were answered without judgement or frustration. She was easy to talk to and very friendly. I then went on to NYSC and asked the gentleman at the front desk the same questions, and his answers were short and his demeanor was extremely unpleasant. I would have understood if he was a "bro," but he was just some scrawny guy who looked like he was bored with life. Same goes with the girl at the desk next to him. Basically just wanted to say thank you to Retro and Angelina for having some awesome costumer service skills. Guess which gym I'll be joining?!?! read more

First time coming to this gym. I decided to try it since I got into fitness and was using friends' guest passes. It's very small and in a shopping centre that looks like it's from 1995, but I like that. There's not too many people and you don't have to wait to use a machine. Everything is clean and up to date. I've been a member of this gym since they first open few years back. Location is very convenient for me. I used to go to Bayshore gym but it became too far so I switched to Retro. At $20/month I shouldn't be complaining but they are trying to hard to expand on a small place. Men's locker room is smaller than my bed room?! They took some space to open up gym space with rowing machine and other cross fit equipments like ropes and punching bag. Trainers change a lot. I don't take advantage of them anyway so I could care less. Don't go around 6-8pm as it packed. Overall it is an ok gym. Nothing fancy just get the work out done. read more

I've been a member since the gym opened its doors, and it's been going down hill ever since. The equipment doesn't get fixed right away. All the bearings on all the pulley machines are shot. Never do you see any trainers to talk to. Management changes like I change my underwear. I've tried to call the main office, no one called me back. The gym is the worst retro out there. I have been to at least 10 Retros in the area. I come to the Matawan location out of convenience. The equipment is fine. My only issue is with the cleanliness. The elyptical machines have layers of grime in the footholds. I scoopped out at least a handful and dropped this golf ball size dustball on floor next to machine and it was there for a week surrounded by several water bottle caps. The floors in the shower area of the mens locker room are disgusting. A used q-tip has been next to the scale for the last 5 days. The amount of hair on the floor in locker room shower area shows it is hardly ever mopped. The bathroom is just as bad. When I went to tell the person behind counter, they were eating subs so I did not bother. read more

No more heavy bags. I pretty much only signed up because it was cheap and had heavy bags. The gym itself is rather small but pretty much has everything the average Joe/Jane would want in a gym. Without heavy bags I'm not sure this gym is for me anymore, though. read more
