We arrived as soon as they opened, the girls behind the counter were very sweet and informative. They were very matter of fact type of energy so it might rub some people the wrong way. Reasonably priced. I wouldn't suggest that anyone under 12 try the upstairs portion. They do have a mirror maze though for all ages. They will ask you to wear plastic gloves though. I would say it could take between 30 minutes to an hour depending on how many people are there or how long you stay in one area. There is a photo op room first; they say it's two but really one large area where a worker (our girl was funny as heck) will help you take photos and offer suggestions. There are a few other rooms with different aspects that are super cool or interactive. I'd share exactly but wouldn't want to ruin the surprise. They also do a "scavenger hunt where you take a photo of the item and at the end get a surprise. It's just a small kids trinket (like a squishy). They could use some updates and fresh paint. Biggest suggestion is having a broom for the confetti. Picking them up with your hand was gross. It's definitely a one type thing but still fun. Overall enjoyed our experience.

It's tiny and gimmicky but my sisters and I had a blast. It's priced a bit high for what you get, but if you go with the right people at the right time, you can get tons of goofy pictures. The people that worked there were helpful and friendly. Wish there were more photo opportunities and less strangers.

You can also walk down the street some and go to an look out point over the ocean. There is also an old chapel there but it is currently under construction. What makes this lighthouse a pain to see is that it is located on a military base and it seems apparent that it is an inconvenience for them and thus they will make it so for you. Once you go through a TSA like process and show you ID 3-4 times, they take the ID for your ticket. Then you are shuttled in by a van. The driver was nice enough and they do come around often to take you back to get your idea. I do NOT recommend doing this if there is any line to get through. It is a slow process. There was no one else in the screening shed and it was SLOW. Plus it must be a hang out location as well because when we got back there were 4 people laid out in all the chairs in there just hanging around. Good lighthouse- unfortunate location

Whether you're a local or visiting, make sure to carve out 30 minutes to an hour to visit…read more Located on Fort Story - a military base, Cape Henry Lighthouse is a historical site with 191 steps leading to the top opening to beautiful views of the ocean and the newer Cape Henry lighthouse in the backdrop. IDs are required to enter base as well as proof of car insurance. Please refer to their website for more up to date info for entrance. If you are a civilian visiting you can still visit but must park to the left upon checking in at the gate. From there a tram will pick you up and drive to the lighthouse entrance. If you have military base access you can park right in the lot at the entrance of the lighthouse. I suggest purchasing tickets on groupon for the best prices. The only restrooms are port a potties to the left of the gift shop entrance. Check in is at the counter in the gift shop. One person from your group needs to sign in. As someone mentioned before, the wifi can be spotty so if you have a groupon or ticket on your phone, you might want to do a screenshot. There are a lot of steps to navigate once you exit the gift shop to the actual entrance of the lighthouse. There was a docent at the top of the stairs that automatically spouted out facts and history about the lighthouse. Although there are 191 steps it's manageable for most people even if you don't exercise on the daily and as long as you have ability to navigate stairs in general. There's one landing on the spiral staircase and a straight ladder to climb to get to the top. It can get hot up there. All three of us were sweating but it wasn't the hottest day either. Maybe roughly 5-10 people max can fit at the top. The views of the ocean are relaxing. We even had a sailboat peacefully sail by. I wouldn't wear a dress to the lighthouse if you're climbing up. If you decide to, wear shorts underneath. Probably not a long dress or skirt or flip flops either so you don't trip going up the ladder. If you have sandals with ankle straps you should be fine. There really isn't much else to see at the lighthouse though. At the base there are more scenic photo ops and a compass on the ground. The newer lighthouse isn't open to the public except on lighthouse day, August 7th, the main reason it's not open to the public the rest of the year is it's a working lighthouse.

It…read moresits on a portion of the 5,350 acre 1635 land grant to Adam Thoroughgood along the Lynnhaven River. Nestled in the back of the Thoroughgood neighborhood, the lure of its colonial history has drawn visitors for many years. It's also a central point for activities in the neighborhood. During my son's elementary days, field trips to the house were greatly anticipated. This time, before its acquisition by the City of Virginia Beach, provided a wonderful interpretation. One downstairs side of the house was 17th century with the other side 18th century. It was beautiful. I mourn the loss of the period pieces and wonder what the city did with the treasures. During that time period there were many school buses that traveled Thoroughgood Drive for field trips, I haven't seen them during recent years. After the City of Virginia Beach took ownership there was a reinterpretation that closed the house for many years. The beautiful previous interpretation has been abandoned. ;( For many years there were conflicting opinions on the construction date based on evidence in the construction materials. The city dated its construction as about 1712, which may or may not be correct. It was obvious that the house hadn't been the original home of Adam Thoroughgood. That house was most likely in what is now the Baylake Pines neighborhood. The homes then were near a waterway. A hurricane changed the course of the Lynnhaven River causing the nearby Lynnhaven Parish Church to be moved and the graveyard to be under the Western Branch of the Lynnhaven River. Legend is that many years ago boys swimming in the river felt the tombstones, now most likely covered by the river's silt. Regardless of the interpretation and the controversy of who built the home, it's well worth a visit. They have the perfect team and tour guides that are passionate about what they do. I've been back to the house, three or four times. One would think, do I truly need to return, AGAIN? The answer is yes. It's the same house but you will find some new information and history each time you visit for their various events. They've held a Highland tea on the lawn, where we learned about the history of perfume and listened to the technical skills of a bagpipe player, donning A kilt while sipping on tea and enjoying a lovely presented table setting with a charcuterie board and petite fours. Or a ghost tour, learning about the local ghosts and stories of the ill informed and misguided public re: determining one's innocence on whether they were a witch to playing ghost hunters and holding conversations by the bonfire. They have great Christmas events showcasing the various holiday traditions as well as their history and how a typical Christmas dinner would look. VB History museums truly make learning fun and entertaining!
