A server told me that if I wasn't eating (I wasn't), I couldn't come in and browse, although it bills itself as an old country store and has all kind of knick knacks for sale. I didn't get to look. And this is one of them. Drop by the Old Country Store for a delicious, old-fashioned soul food buffet and a serenade by the chef, "Mister D"! He told us he'd originally bought this property to "flip" it, but soon fell in love with the area and stayed. The Old Country Store features high shelves and ladders from which store clerks used to pick your order; self-serve stores weren't always a thing! Admittedly, this review comes a few years after my visit to this place during a road trip. I only realized that I'd not posted the review because I found some notes that weren't yet checked off my to-do list. From my notes: Golden crisp fried chicken with a luscious interior. Excellent flavor inside and out. Perhaps "some of the best fried chicken I've ever eaten." Sides are equally delicious, though "be careful next time to not fill up on the field peas and rice." Atmosphere feels like a flea market ... middle of nowhere ... definitely a "destination worth the drive." Owner/manager "seems to care that his patrons are getting their fill." From my memory: I wish that I'd had multiple stomachs. The chicken here rivaled anything that I'd ever eaten, and I'm a southern guy who grew up on some dang good yardbird. The sides here are as southern as southern gets -- field peas, okra and tomatoes, mac & cheese -- all divine, but nothing compared with the main. Bottom line: I wish I lived closer, but it's probably a good thing that I don't. I recommend this place wholeheartedly. It might just be the best fried chicken in the country. read more

Excellent, Excellent, Excellent food and an adventure too. I had to laugh at the very few one star reviews. Most one star reviews said they weren't upset about having to wash their hands but they sure did mention it. Are you really so use to being dirty that washing your hands is a problem? If it didn't upset you why mention it. Also had to laugh at the ones who drive there during it right after COVID shutdown to find the restaurant closed...I guess they have never heard of a new thing called the phone. Even now unless it's local and we know it's open we will call to verify hours before going somewhere new. But some people just get their jollies putting others down. We walked in not knowing what to expect. It definitely had the feel of an old country store. The man who greeted us was so kind and welcoming. We were directed to wash our hands (which was a great requirement considering the buffet style). We both grabbed a plate and had almost everything on the buffet. The turnip and mustard greens were great! The potato salad was awesome and the candied yams were so flavorful. But the best thing here by far was the fried chicken and the blackberry cobbler. Stopped in to look at the so called "Craft Mall". No sign or anything on door about Covid-19 and not a soul standing up front to tell us anything. We proceeded to look at the crap for sale on the shelves in the place. I could see the owner sitting towards the back. He never said anything to us until we got to the back of the place where he then told us we had to go back up front and wash our hands in the restroom. Then kept saying that it was a restaurant over and over to us. Treated us like we were 5 years old. Plus we were wearing face mask and no one in the restaurant was wearing any including the owner. Yet he is all worried about our hands being washed when the entire place is filthy and covered in dust. Screw this place. I entered the establishment wearing my face mask and after spraying sanitizer on my hands. The place was empty (it was after 2 pm) except for two men sitting at separate tables. The one man who was actually eating greeted me. We exchanged "hi how you doing?" Polite talk, then I continued along my way, now towards the back of the store. I'm half way through the store now looking over the items for sale when the other man looks at me and says, "we are a restaurant you have to go back up front and wash your hands in the bathroom" A bit taken aback, I reply "excuse me? I'm not eating. I'm looking at the antiques/garage sale items, etc. " Again he says "We are a restaurant too" I said " but I'm not ...." Before I could finish he said "We are a restaurant too" again So, I'm not eating. It's advertised as a General Store craft mall and restaurant, and I am adult woman. Im following Covid protocols. I used to walk with my cousins to this store whenever we were visiting family in Washington, Mississippi. No fried chicken then but lots of comic books. In a way it was our local library. We stopped there a few years ago while passing by and the home style buffet with the fried chicken was delicious. Met the owner and reminisced for a while. He's very pleasant and gracious. Well the only thing I have to say is I'm glad it's over with and I don't have to come back even if it is on my route. Alright, So me and my wife decided to try Mr.D's Country Store's Fried Chicken. After reading the reviews I thought gotta try this! Well first do not get overly excited about the appearance outside or In, this is an older country store and it shows. They had one guy (nice guy) trying to serve three to four tables that were there at the time serving drinks and deserts if you wanted any. We had to ask him four times for the peach cobbler ( which is probably the best thing going for this place) after waiting 15-20 minutes it finally showed up. Next the food. The famed Chicken was pretty good, all the other vegetables, meh about what you would expect from a buffet. Honestly I've had better at some local gas stations in Florida! However here is the WARNING that nobody mentions.. The Price! It's not visible and if you're assuming like me $12-15. Think again. Try $23.!!! Yup... This place was a huge disappointment. I'm not upset about washing my hands and then having to sanitize my hands before going thru the buffet. The restaurant needs to meet the same cleanliness as my hands!! It's dirty. Also the food on the buffet was COLD! The only thing that was hot was the chicken. I was concerned about the temp of some of the food, it had a odd taste so I didn't eat it. So I basically paid $21 for one piece of chicken!! Indeed the fried chick is very very good. On the down side all the fixings looked so good as southern food always does, but none of it was hot. They were in a warmer as it is buffet style but everything was cold except for the chicken. The cook/owner was a delight and even sang to everyone which we loved. He would however do better getting all new staff as they were not friendly at all. Oh and they have you wash your hands and use sanitizer before you can be seated, we liked that but it seemed a waste considering all the condiment containers felt dirty and some needed refilling. read more

To start off I'm very picky about good food. Don't be fooled by a TV show. We drove 2 hours to go see what the hype was about and paid $61.20 for two of us to come back home and eat with my mom. The staff was good however the place was very disappointing for as an old county store of rural Mississippi. I seen nothing but old dishes nothing pertaining to anything to do with an old store. Just a bunch of junk in my opinion. I paid our bill and even left a tip cause bought experience is the best. I hope my review helps someone down the road. The sides were typical southern, but the chicken...the chicken...was the reason to come! Crispy, juice, plentiful, and flavorful. Old Country Store was a delightful place to have lunch. We were visiting a friend in Natchez and stopped in a little shop for souvenirs when a group of ladies suggested we try the Old Country Store for lunch. The rest is history!! We drove 30 miles (in the middle of what I consider nowhere) our GPS directed us to this unconventional place with excellent home cooked food. We enjoyed our buffet lunch and the company of the proprietor after we had finished our meal.
