My beloved and I were heading south from Little Rock back home to Houma, LA. We were going to eat in Port Gibson but couldn't find any place. We stopped along a nice home where a guy was working in his yard and asked him about a local cafe. He told us about Mr. D's, which is the name (Mr. D's Heavenly Fried Chicken) of this venerable chicken establishment. :-) This is an old, old building sitting by itself on US Highway 61 in Lorman, MS. This is about 10 miles or so south of Port Gibson and only about 20 minutes or so from Natchez. I noticed the original sign on the side of the building showed this was a general merchandiser back in 1870 something, so this is a post-Civil War place. The floors show it. They look like the original hard pine which is really cool to me. It's a big barn of a place and we walked in and someone yelled "Y'all come in and find a seat! Grab some lunch and eat all you can." Well, I'm always up to that challenge so we found a table and checked out the buffet. They don't have a menu that I'm aware of. It's a small, self serve buffet style place. This was a Saturday at lunch time and they had fried chicken, fried pork chops, baked ham, baked chicken and a bunch of sides including mac and cheese, green beans, greens (mustard I think), smothered okra (with tomatoes) and cabbage. Oh, baked beans too. Also jalapeno corn muffins and some other stuff as well as a small salad bar. Don't need no stinkin salad. Nope. Just dived in and had pork chops, okra, greens, cornbread, cabbage and some potato salad. She had chicken and I forget what else. So the potato salad is just a prepared, mustart potato salad. Sysco or some such. Fine but no big deal. On to the good stuff. The pork chop was perfectly done. Crispy, crunchy, just enough seasoning and tender. Not overdone and also gigantic. No excess oil and not at all greasy. Did I mention gigantic? The greens were good. Almost as good as mine. The okra was great; I had three servings. To my great shame, I also had two of those pork chops. By the way, they were gigantic. My beloved said the fried chicken was some of the best she had ever eaten and I have complete faith in her judgement. My only regret was filling up on pork chops and not trying the chicken. The muffins were really good too. They don't go for fancy here; At the condiment table was a big slab of butter and a can - yes, a can - of sorghum molasses. If you didn't know, a corn muffin with butter and syrup makes an excellent dessert and I had two of them. In fact, I also bought a can of the sorghum to take home. So after this marathon of self-destruction (self-inflation?), turns out they had dessert. Apple, blackberry or peach cobbler. We had blackberry. The cobbler was so hot that it was a good thing there was a slab of vanilla ice cream sitting on top and covering the entire portion, which itself was enough for two. If only we had known when we ordered two of them. So when it was time to go, the friendly gentleman who was taking care of us offered a refill for my Yeti for the road. This is not a fancy place. It is not a pretentious place. It is a down-home, friendly and casual place that treats you like a neighbor, and that is a very nice thing to be able to say. We'll be back. Alton Brown wasn't wrong. The fried chicken here at Old Country Store is damn delicious. We sampled fried chicken from Louisville to New Orleans on a 2-week driving trip and truly believe that Old Country Store was the winner. It's right off the highway in something that resembles an antique store. The food is buffet style - Southern at Heart for a flat rate of $15.95. If you don't eat your money's worth, shame on you. Woke up this morning, looked over at my bride and said "hey baby, road trip!". I had heard about Old Country Store through Alton Brown. I searched the address through Google Maps and then we were off. During the trip, my wife watched the owner, Mr. D and was excited to try the place out. Google Maps had the place at 2 hours away. What it didn't say was that there would be no rest stops during the entire trip. No golden arches, no gas stations, no nothing... which is fine if you are a guy. My wife is a non outside squatter. Handing her an empty 32 ounce cup got me nothing but dirty looks. Thankfully, in the town of Gloster, Mississippi, we found a Dollar General that graciously offered a restroom to my wife. After a few minutes, we were back on the road. I have never seen so many trees in my life. Finally, at the 2 hour mark, the old place presented itself. The restaurant had a nostalgic feel to it. It felt like more than just a restaurant. It felt like a home. We walked in, and just kind of felt lost. So many things adorned the walls and floors. It felt like we had stepped back into time, into a much simpler time. "Y'all come on in, it's all you can eat buffet. If you got too much food for one plate, get two plates!", Mr. D announced. I assured him I would definitely take him up on that after driving 2 hours to get there. Everything was presented to us. Plates, silverware, napkins and food. After looking over all the food, I made my game plan. Mustard Greens, Green Beans, corn bread, and chicken. Every part of the bird was in a large pan on the buffet table. I grabbed a thigh, breast, and a wing. I broke the wing in half, put it in my mouth and pulled. The bone came out clean. All of the meat was fall off the bone tender. It was indeed the best restaurant chicken I had ever had. The crust did not overpower the bird. You tasted the crust, and then you tasted the chicken, which was just as good. All of the food was very good. Sadly, I didn't leave enough room for dessert. It wasn't on the buffet line, so I don't know if it's extra or not, but I did hear a server asking the people next to us if they wanted blackberry or peach cobbler with ice cream While I was letting the food settle in my belly, Mr. D walked over to us to make sure we had enjoyed our meal. After assuring him that we had, he said he could not leave without singing to my bride. He started belting out "Sugar Pie Honey" to my wife. Now, I gave sang to my wife plenty of times, but Mr. D did not get the same look that I usually get when I sing. He sang to her and then walked around the tables singing to each table. Sadly, we had to leave and make the 2 hour track back home. All in all, not a bad road trip. There's nothing fancy or pretentious with either the food nor the ambiance. It's simply the best home-style southern cooking around, served in a simple, comfortable setting. Also, there's a lot of seating space, and tables can easily be moved together, if needed. My friend and I stopped by this place after reading the wonderful reviews! We arrived shortly after they opened, around 10am. We were told they were in the process of putting everything out, but that we could start with the salad buffet. We were told to go to the restroom to wash our hands, then use the hand sanitizer before getting our food. No paper towels in the bathroom. We went in search of napkins to dry our hands. We then approached the salad bar and were absolutely disgusted. The food looked old and discolored. Food was crusted on the inside of the pans like they hadn't been washed in weeks. Where pans hadn't been placed on the steam table yet, we saw that the warming water was dirty and looked like it had never been changed. We walked to the nearest table to discuss what to do when we both saw the seasoning containers on the table were dirty with seasoning crusted on it. We immediately agreed that there was no way we were eating here so we left. In hindsight I wish we'd taken photos before we left but I was in shock. The photos online made everything look delicious so now I'm thinking they were taken a long time ago. Unless you are accustomed to eating at a very unclean restaurant and are okay with it, I would recommend finding someplace else to eat. I wish we'd been able to try the fried chicken. Five stars for the chicken! 2-3 stars for everything else. As has been mentioned, the chicken is excellent. Best when juicy hot and fresh but still delicious if not. Extremely crispy outside, juicy and tender on the inside - mmmm, mmmm good! Now for the not so good. In my opinion, the cole slaw was inedible. It had an unusual spice in it (drawing blank as to what it is) but was off-putting. I took a tiny bite of it, wished I hadn't, and washed it down with some delicious cold (not diluted!) Dr Pepper. Next items Potato salad. Now that was some good stuff! If I hadn't been stuffed from the chicken, I could have easily had seconds. Collard greens. They were ok. A tad salty to my taste, but I finished them up. Mac n cheese. This was not attractive with it's pale color - and lack of a 'cheese crust' on top, but was tasty when eaten with other side dishes, such as collards. Tied with the cole slaw for inedibility was the corn bread muffin. While I'm a Southern girl born and raised, I wonder at times if I was adopted (just kidding mom and dad!). I hate sweet tea, eat sugar on my grits and like sweet cornbread. There, I admit it. I. Like. Sweet. Cornbread. (Well, I also like Mexican cornbread.). This cornbread was not sweet or moist. The texture was like baked sand. Dry, gritty and unpalatable - to me. So, for those of you who absolutely adore fried chicken, you need to drop by for a meal. My husband's family thought I was crazy, wanting to drive more than 3 hours from their home in Ocean Springs, in torrential rain no less, and with tornado warnings, all for what Alton Brown (of Food Network fame) had said was the best fried chicken he'd ever had. The Old Country Store is a 130 year old building that looks like a breeze could blow it over. Inside, the walls are lined with shelves filled with flea-market kitsch. I bought two cotton angel ornaments where the sharp, tough husk parts of the cotton plant form the wings. They were all handmade by a local woman, Mr. D said. Mr. D- what an extraordinary man he is. Even if his chicken had been average, I would have made the trip just to meet him. He's the type of person whose age you don't dare guess. You know he's been around the block a few times, but he is so energetic and full of life and positive energy that there's no way he's as old as he must be. He greeted and chatted with all of his customers, encouraging them to eat more, 'cause he'll make more. He also sang us a song about how his "Grandma was a cornbread cookin' queen..." Now, the old spirituals have always inexplicably made this plump white German immigrant choke up- and Mr. D's voice did the same. The food was served buffet style- fried chicken, chicken smothered in onion gravy, greens, black-eyes peas, green beans, mac & cheese, rice, cornbread, and salad- all for the ridiculous price of $6.95. It was indeed the best fried chicken I have ever had. My husband almost never eats fried chicken because he does not like meat on the bone, but I for the first time I actually saw him gnaw the bones clean. We somehow managed to save room for dessert, and no joke- there were actually tears in my husband's eyes as he bit into his peach cobbler a la mode. I had the blackberry and it was also outstanding. As we checked out, I asked Mr. D if he knew that Alton Brown was coming before he showed up. "No!" he said in his sweet drawl. "And that's the way I want it. I treat everybody the same who comes in here. Whether it's Oprah Winfrey, the Southern Living people, the president, you, or Alton Brown. Everybody's the same." If you are anywhere near Lorman, Mississippi, you're a fool if you don't stop at the Old Country Store. On a cross the country trip my bf and I stopped in Lorman for fried chicken because 1) it was not far from where some family lives 2) we saw the place on Alton Brown's show feasting on asphalt. The chicken is quite good, crispy, juicy, flavorful and pipping hot. All the other food is just ok, I think you can get similar food pretty much anywhere in the South. The restaurant and the Mr. D are just so full of character. The fried chicken is sold inside an old store with lots of of shelves and piles of old junk still all around. Mr. D is ecstatic to see every visitor and you don't even need to ask before he just starts handing out his autograph , and about once an hour he breaks into a song. If you want good friend chicken and a bizarre but enjoyable experience why not stop here. read more

What a great place to eat! This is definitely a place that is all about the experience. Mr. D came to our table and chatted and made us feel like we were locals. The food was second to none and the chicken is amazing. It is a buffet style that has everything you would picture at a Sunday lunch. Of course they are only open for lunch and the meal is a little pricey. Now the building is over 100 years old and it has its been kept as clean as could be expected but the silverware and plates had food residue on some of them which I feel like should have been tended to better. I saw this restaurant on the Food Network, so my husband and I decided to take a road trip. I was so disappointed in the food and how it was setup. The fried chicken was delicious. The ribs were tough, the corn bread dressing tasted like stove top stuffing and the mustard greens and collards were straight from the can. There was some kind of beige sauce over noodles, that they called macaroni and cheese.The food was definitely not worth the 123 miles I traveled to get there. I will start by saying that I am not a fried chicken on the bones kind of gal but this stuff was good. I enjoyed the buffet choices especially the veggies and my apple cobbler to end my meal. However, the highlight was sitting and talking to Mr. D. I could have stayed longer just to listen to his stories. I was inspired, moved and in tears of joy. I took some video of him singing and doing a two-step, but apparently the post did not happen on Yelp. Anyway, this is a special place in a 130 year old general store. You will leave with a smile on your face and a sated tummy. It is worth the detour if you are headed down I-20. You will not regret it. The buffet also includes vegetables and corn bread. It is all you can eat, but the chicken is the star. The vegetables are mediocre and the rolls and cornbread are so dried out that they are not edible. Cornbread is excellent too. Many of the dishes come from the proprietor, Mr. Arthur Davis, mother's recipe. The store has been featured on national TV, and many of the cars in front are from out of state, but the atmosphere is local. After seeing Alton Brown's Feasting on Asphalt about this place several years ago and reading many of the more recent reviews we decided to add a detour by 2 hours to a road trip weekend. For those of you used to Interstate convenience...this isn't it! You drive from Natchez, if coming from the south and go about 20 miles on further up. The road is plenty wide and fast and very little traffic. If on Interstate 20 traveling through or visiting Vicksburg, MS the go south on Hwy 61 about an hour. The business sits literally in the middle of no where! The building has been there since the late 1800s and is/was a large store serving the community. It suddenly appears on the side of the road, mixed in with the Pine Trees. We went arrived at about 3 p.m. And there were 4 cars there. Even though the information was that they stayed open until 6 on Friday I was afraid the weather and little traffic had caused them to close. Finally saw the small open lighted sign in window and pulled in. As I said, the building is old and actually a very large structure for the time frame. I reckon folks back them looked at it as a WalMart as they sold everything from groceries to farm implements and feed to fabric. We went inside and were greeted warmly by a younger man,and saw what I knew had to be the infamous Mr D talking to the group of 6 people at the only table with customers. He was singing as they say he does often. I mean serenading the table! I went to the restroom and in the unused portions of the building saw probably several thousand business cards tacked to every wall and every nook and cranny. Many were yellow with age so it is obvious that this place was doing business well before Food Network and Southern Living made it famous. We were directed to the two Buffett style steam tables and told to help ourselves. Let's start with the CHiCKEN since that's what we came for. There was a huge stack of fried chicken on one table. It had all the pieces of course and they were all huge. None of the splitting breasts into two or three servings as many modern chicken joints do. These were most likely the largest breast and thigh pieces of chicken I have ever seen or eaten. They were crusty golden brown but not in the hard crispy way as Popeyes or Churches. Did I mention they were huge! I took a single breast which filled a large oval plate. The sides were purple hull peas, sweet potatoes, corn on the cob, green beams, turnip greens, macaroni and cheese, chicken and rice and ribs as well. There was also cornbread and biscuits. I got the purple hulls and sweet potatoes and a little chicken and rice. The place has a lot of table filling the large space and all are covered with white table clothes which gives it a little dressier feel. Taste The crust or breaking on the chicken was crispy but not hard and appeared to be floured not dunked in batter. It was still boy inside. The crust was very well seasoned and reminded me of my grandmothers fried chicken which she used to cook in an old old electric skillet. It was very very moist and flavorful inside and not at all dry as most breast tend to be. Overall that it would in fact certainly rate up on the scale of being the top one or two best restaurant fried chicken we had ever had. Very old country home cooked style. It was certainly where others claimed it to be. The sides were NOT the best I have ever had. They did all appear to be fresh and I would guess locally grown. They were good but I have eaten at a lot of "soul food" places in my life and these were not at that level. Grantee we were there in the middle of the afternoon so that could have affected it as well. If one has not eaten many fresh vegetable "soul food/country cooking" before they will most likely enjoy these. The cornbread and biscuits were tasty enough but dry. Once again it was the middle of the afternoon and I doubt they were fresh. Desert was a blackberry and peach cobblers with ice cream. They were very good but again in my opinion not the best I have every had. No complaints about them really. Over all the meal for 2 with 2 cobblers with ice cream and two really good sweet teas came to $37.00. keep in mind thIs is a Buffett and you can get more so the price is really pretty good! I was more than full from the huge breast and my wife had the same and also a large thigh which, as dark meat usually is, but more so...very tender and juicy! The 2 young women and young man were very nice and service was great. Mr. D appeared to be congenial but I was sort of surprised that after the other table left and we were the only one in the place that he didn't at least speak as he passed by a couple of times. I didn't want or need a song, but rust expected more from the owner on a slow business day.
