I got the special of the day which was baked chicken with rice and gravy and two sides. They guy serving was super sweet to explain to me the ordering process and I had a great conversation with the woman in line before me who comes every week for the Wednesday special. For my sides, I chose the greens and mashed potatoes. Even though I got two starches, it was worth it because the mashed potatoes and gravy were worth having as a main dish! I loved the greens, too, especially since they had all the hot sauce and peppers and vinegar choices you could want. The chicken was fork tender and I left nothing on the plate. I love that they provide each guest a little wrapped package of cornbread and iced cake of the day, too. I will definitely be stopping at Pamela's any time I'm in town.

We both felt really heavy afterward, and my mom even felt sick after eating there. It was just basic diner food and a bit overpriced for something you can get almost anywhere else. However, the cake that comes with the cornbread was my favorite part. SERVICE: The service was fine. It had more of a cafeteria-style vibe, so there isn't much to say about it. AMBIANCE: The inside felt very run down. The bar wasn't even finished and didn't look like it was ever used. Overall, it had a very hole-in-the-wall feel.

Shoot, once again I forgot to take a picture! There were three "blue plate specials" available,…read morefried chicken, turkey and dressing and ham with two sides, carrots&peas, and squash. We got the turkey. For the price(15.99), the serving of turkey wasn't very generous, maybe a scant half-cup of turkey. One the plus side, they did have dark meat, and it has some cranberry dressing. The corn meal dressing was very generous, and moist. It had a generous serving of carrots&peas, not so generous with the squash. We did get a slice of Bumbleberry pie, and peach pie. I was really looking forward to the Bumbleberry pie, as it was supposed to have raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, and blackberries. I hope that's correct. I was picturing a slice of thick pie just brimming over with fat, juicy berries. Instead I got a thin, flat piece of pie with the bottom 3/4 of the pie filled with a pinkish-red opaque jelly of sorts, and a sparse, then layer of mashed berries on top, just plunder the crust. The body of the pie was just under an inch thick, maybe 3/4" thick. It was an EXTREME disappointment, considering how the town is supposed to be the ""Pie Capital of Louisiana". If I were you, don't bother getting the Bumbleberry pie, but do get the peach; it was outstanding! I wish I had the recipe! The flavor of the peaches came through, it was sweet and delicious, without being heavily sweetened with spices, overwhelming the peaches. Yummy! I'm only rating it a "three", as the service was lacking.

Not many places offer ham and I always loved Sunday dinner ham so that was my choice for lunch. As so many say, they are known for their pies and the wife enjoyed her pecan pie slice. I was a little too full for pie so I got a little dish of ice cream that hit the spot. Service was friendly and efficient. I would definitely stop here again for lunch if we were in the vicinity at lunch time.

Real Southern Cooking appeared to be the tiny self-proprietor choke-and-puke that I love. Well, I tried it today. The Hunny and I have been married for 21 years, and between all of the choices, this is the one where we went for our anniversary. Real Southern Cooking looks more cafe than restaurant. Not fancy at all, just a few tables in a small area. The entire menu fits on two 8.5x11 pieces of paper on the wall. It appeals to those who say "I just want good food at a low price" - um, like me. It felt down home, too. We were surprised to see a Hispanic mama & her son behind the counter; service with a smile. The black man I expected in the back was seated at a table, finishing his lunch, and he was not only informative about the spice on everything, but friendly after witnessing us praying before eating. Some utility workers came in too, "I wish I could order everything!" It appears to be a place with a daily clientele. We both had chicken: the Hunny, chicken spaghetti, me, fried chicken. She liked hers, but found it a little spicy, like the chef included Rotel Tomatoes in the sauce. I had three small pieces, and it reminded me of extra-crunchy skin at places like Krispy Krunchy Chicken. The meat was tender and not too hot. 2 sides are included, and the amount of red beans & rice I got was larger than a mere side. Real Southern Cooking is indeed one of those places that fits the Southern diner stereotype, including the good food at a low price. Not totally Texas, but totally Southern. If you're traveling on I-10, it is located downtown, a few miles off the freeway. A few more items on the menu would take it up to 5-star territory; as you see, many Yelpers have it there now. Enjoy it now, ya hear?
