The house has three rooms available all decorated in a tasteful, stylish and individually schemed way. A four-poster bed/family room, the Green room (not too green) and the Mulberry room (not too mulberry). All the rooms, as is the rest of the house, have a blend of fine contemporary and antique furnishings mixed with the original oak beams which feature prominently throughout the house as well as the uneven and slanted floors, corridors and ceilings. The house itself dates back largely to the 15th century (some more recent, some older). Of course, breakfast is offered but as there are only three rooms to cater for, each has their own personal breakfast in the guest lounge, prepared and cooked to your requirements and timing. We stayed in the Mulberry room and it was quite marvellous! En suite and tea and coffee making facilities too! Car parking is available as is use of the garden. Definitely a place I'd like to stay at again. TTFN, Ian

Jonathan is a very kind and helpful host, and everything is chosen with great care, from the modern yet functional fixtures, to the clean and unusually large beds compared to other beds we encountered in the UK, to the beautifully handpicked furniture. Jonathan also buys groceries early every morning, so the fresh fruit and local sausage and bacon he serves are outstanding. He also makes perfectly cooked eggs, as well as delicious homemade fruit smoothies! I would definitely stay here again.

Lovely food, super service and a great atmosphere. We've been several times so are quite used to writing down our own order and don't think twice about it now - it makes it more relaxed and informal in my opinion. We didn't have room after two courses for a pudding but I was delighted to receive a 'happy birthday' plate with complimentary dark chocolate brownie complete with lit candle! Yum! I've also published this review on Trip Advisor, hope that's OK.

They've surely got the cash to make it sparkle a bit more? Food has been a bit hit and miss over the last few times we've been - sometimes it's outstanding, sometimes it's VERY average - the price is always on the higher side though! Food is always very fresh and beautifully presented. I always find that there are loads, and loads of dishes on the menu but actually very few that I fancy. Some of them have so many ingredients & then they always end up having mushrooms or fennel that I can't eat! I'm really NOT a fussy eater!! The desserts are generally more appealing. Good wine list but always on the pricey side & v expensive to drink wine by the glass. Great to be able to see the kitchen and the food being prepped. Pretty good service usually. Still an absolute pain in the bum trying to get a table on a Saturday night - we don't even bother trying any more, wish they took bookings as it's frustrating when you've got guests & want to take them to such a lovely setting - we tend to go to Seckford or The Crown, instead. On the whole, "nice" and a popular place with good atmosphere.

Generally very professional staff ( they accomodated a part of twelve in a lovely beamed back room, including young children, with no fuss, and none of the we've-forgotten-about-you service you'd often encounter), although service at the bar was a bit haphazard ( although it was a Sunday afternoon, so probably best not harp on). Very well presented food; flavours tend to be fairly tame, but undoubtedly a crowd pleaser.

I took a liking to the pub sign, a slightly creepy smiling angel blowing in the wind. The menu seemed interesting enough and my companion was sold on the pork belly, so we went inside. The decor is OK, but there are not a lot of tables; the ones closer to the front windows are clearly the most popular choice - the others, by the kitchen door, can be quite dark during the day. My starter (smoked duck + waldorf salad) was ok, just a bit mean on the duck. The salad was unremarkable. For my main I opted for the burger and even though the skinny fries were on point, my burger was just a shrunk bit of dried meat bang in the middle of a good brioche. What can I say? The bread + cheese tasted better than the meat. My companion ham hock was much better than anything else we ate there; his main course was fine, but he had to ask for an extra piece of crackling since the one he originally got was ridiculously tiny - I mean TINY. It's a pity, since the staff is really smiley and lovely and location is great. They do have wi-fi, though - a must in the area. :)

The oysters were fresh and plump and wonderful, and couldn't have been better! Once we sat, the options for dinner were unbelievable! I couldn't decide which I liked the best... the beetroot marinated salmon, the seared scallops, or the Fig & Goat cheese tart! I might lean toward the tart! The Seabass entree was so delicate, and the prawn ravioli was such a splended touch! However, the star was clearly the beef wellington (see the pics) and the presentation could stop ANY show! I didn't mind though as I was just going to be in and out. According to my colleagues, a room with a harbour view is definitely worth asking for. My room was very stylish I thought. Unique things that I hadn't seen anywhere else like mosiac style feature wallpaper in a dramatic blue and black pattern, and just nice little touches like a retro style telephone and dotty mugs, and a big rustic wooden bench/desk. There is nothing corporate about this place at all, it is very nicely done. The bathroom was great too - a seperate shower cubicle with an overhead and side on shower, and a big double bath tub - I had a fantastic soak before heading out for the evening. The room had its own temperature control, and the bed was very comfortable - I felt like I was being enveloped in a gigantic soft marshmallow. I can't comment much more than that, as I didn't have dinner or breakfast there, and didn't use the bar. I'd like to come back to the Salthouse though - when away from home through work, staying here feels like a real treat.

There are 5 rooms set out in a courtyard arrangement all individually decorated in a 'modern country' style and each has its own shower room, tv/radio, hospitality tray (with a nice range of teas and coffee) and hairdryer. The largest one (Old Bob) is the accessable room for disabled guests. My mother and I were in the twin bedded* 'ESX Best' room which was nice, comfortable and clean with effective underfloor heating (in fact we found it too effective and had to turn the thermastat down). The beds are 3' wide, very comfortable and very high. I didn't measure the height, but my own bed is 24" (appprox 60cm) high and the ones here are definately higher. The only potental problem with the room is that there is no full length wardrobe. Instead there is a 'tallboy' or 'gentleman's wardrobe', so hanging up ladies' dresses that are knee length or longer could be tricky. There are a couple of hooks on the back of the room door that can be used, but the door open inwards and onto a wall so one doesn't want to hang too much on them. I suspect, due to the layout of the rooms, that 'Rumpus' may have a similar set up. My sister and fiance were in 'Witchfinder General' which does have a full length wardrobe and can have another bed or cot added (by arrangement) for use as a family room. Breakfast is served in a private room in the Pub and consists of a choice of cereal, fresh fruit or yoghurt and orange juice followed by a choice of cooked breakfast, of which I had the deceptively filling Eggs Benedict, toast and tea or coffee. My mother and sister both have problems with gluten/wheat so couldn't have some of the breakfast items but those were replaced with things they could eat eg the saugages were replaced with extra bacon. We had arranged with the owner to provided GF bread, but unfotunately he was called away at the last minute, so was unable to obtain any in time. Because of this, I would recommend that anyone with dietery requirements double checks there is no problem before starting their journey. The cost of the rooms is £65.00p per room per night and breakfast is £10.00p per person per night. *For any American readers: Please note that in the UK a Twin Bedded room is so called because it had 2 beds, that look like 'identical twins' each of which sleeps one person and not one bed which is known as a Single Bed in the UK and a Twin Bed in the USA. NB: Do not confuse this inn with the Compasses, Broomfield Road, Chelmsford. They are two different places.

Of course, in the summer, the terrace is the place to be with wonderful, uninterrupted views of the sea. Took a trip up on my return to the UK and wasn't disappointed this evening, a changed menu but some excellent additions (although damn it, I miss the cheese straws and pigs'n'blankets as starters..) Located on the sea front in old Felixstowe it boasts amazing views from its front conservatory with large windows. And being slightly further away from town you will find that it's not as rammed as the other sea front pubs. The menu is good and the specials are frequently changing meaning there is always something new to get your teeth around. The pub is separated into two areas, one with is very 'pub like' with a pool table, creaky wooden chairs and blackboards and the other is slightly newer with netting on the ceiling to give it that 'fisherman's' feel.
