My boyfriend and I came by on Saturday to kill some time between a wedding ceremony and the reception. We love historic bars/restaurants and this fit the bill. The inside was beautifully done. This is a great option for some slightly more upscale food in a semi-casual atmosphere. We sat at the bar for probably close to 10 minutes before receiving any service, we were dangerously close to leaving when the bartender "came back from break". He did apologize, and did a decent job waiting on us after that--albeit a little slow. There was another worker (Nicole?) clearly carrying the team, who was waiting on all of the bar area tables and perhaps others in the restaurant as well--she was delightful when she ran our food out for the bartender. I was excited to see their extensive beer selection. I opted for a boulevard wheat (one of my absolute favorites!). We ordered a couple of appetizers to hold us over until the wedding dinner we were about to attend. The flatbread of the week was a white sauce base with sausage, prosciutto, and bacon. When it first came out, it looked underwhelming, but it was amazing! The crust on the bottom was beautifully browned, and the combination of flavors was perfect. We also ordered the spinach artichoke dip, which was just average I'd say--very heavy on the cream cheese, not a ton of gooey cheese. All-in-all I would likely try it again. read more

Good food, but we probably went there on a bad night. Seemed like the service was doing its best to keep up with a full house and things were not running smoothly. We had a rocky start: first the hostess sat us at a bar table and then the bartender asked us to move because somebody was more important that we were - no, that's not exactly what he said, but that's how it felt. Then the same bartender/ server had no idea what beers were actually available and told us the big beer list on the chalkboard was not up to date. But, the food was good and this place is a local favorite so maybe you'll have better luck. Next time I'm in the area I will go elsewhere. read more

This is a cool old building with tavern and hotel. If staying in town, you'll miss out if you don't stay here. Parking is not in a private lot, and the hotel is not like some of the more modern ones but it has all you need for a short stay! There is a lot to wander around and see in Washington. This is a great place to use as your base. It is all well maintained and very popular! The hotel area is very quiet even when the Tavern is full of rowdy patrons! Great atmosphere, even better food and service! The food was fantastic. I had the German schnitzel, which was thick, juicy, well, seasoned, with brussels sprouts and bacon, which was so tasty. My mashed potatoes were actually from a baked potato that was freshly smashed. My friend had the calamari, which was unusual, but was spectacular in that it had a kick to it. The calamari was fried with jalapeños, and it was served with a side of sweet chili sauce. Alas, the portions was so huge, that we had to take our leftovers home, but that meat for a fantastic meal the next day. Servers were fantastic, coming back so many times to make sure that we were doing well, and were so friendly to boot. Our waitress was super talkative and super intrusive asking personal questions and mentioning personal things, she also got into a spat with our friend whom we were sharing our time with. He asked for his debit card back because she forgot it, frazzled she took ours gave us our receipt back gave her a tip I wish I could take back because she forgot my card, they were closed on Sunday so I had to wait till Monday to get it back when I went back to get it I spoke to this exact waitress she didn't even look up at me told me to ask the bartender I waited asked another waitress then she got someone to get it for me. We had a reservation because of covid and the place was actually pretty busy on a Thursday night. The menu is a little of everything - pasta, burgers, sandwiches, steak. Not my style but whatever. The blackened salmon was soooooo salty. My last bite was cringeworthy salty. Spouse's burger seems good and a full 1/2 lb! The spinach artichoke was mediocre at best. Seemed more like the cold dip from the grocery, warmed up and melted cheese on top. Hotel: I get that this is a small town but it sure seems like they know a lot about you. I mean, very nice and all but I'm more independent and don't really want people asking where I'm getting breakfast and knowing my departure time etc. Also, someone knocked on our door at 10:20 to see if we were gone when checkout is 11. The king corner room we had was lovely. Nicely re-done with an electric fireplace (!) But really really bright ceiling lights. I also couldn't get hot water on the sink no matter how long I ran it. The Old Dutch Tavern came highly recommended to us by a friend while staying in Washington. The tavern has a great atmosphere and seems like a nice spot for a date or a casual evening watching sports at the bar. While our server was kind and mostly prompt, it took drinks & food a very long time to arrive. From the time we ordered, to the time food arrived for 6 of us was about an hour. That said, the food absolutely redeemed the experience! The Pecan Salmon was some of the best restaurant salmon I've ever had. I had lunch here on a Thursday with a friend. We were seated immediately. I ordered the Pastrami sandwich my friend ordered the steak salad. As we sipped our drinks a thunderstorm blew in. The food arrived and the salad was large with dressing on the side. The steak slices were cooked to medium. The Pastrami sandwich was served on a pretzel roll! It was a generous portion of meat topped with fried pickles and a creamy horseradish sauce. For my side I got the fruit cup of strawberries, blueberries and sliced green apple. What a great complement to the sandwich! The total tab was $30 and I had a glass of wine. The value is pretty good. The single problem with this location is acoustics. When it's crowded it is difficult to converse with your guests. Take this into account when you decide to have a meal here and you will do well. It's certainly worth a visit. read more

I asked some local friends where to eat....as I know there are several tasty choices. Old Dutch Tavern was the "best place for lunch" I was told. We arrived around 11:05am and we were the only ones there. They have a nice selection of brews, so we all ordered a cold one. The place slowly started filling up to a comfortable size....spread out well for social distancing. I had the blackened chicken sandwich with house slaw. It was phenomenal...perhaps the best I've ever tested! The delicious homegrown beefsteak tomato...a Missouri delight in season, couldn't be better! Everyone else commented as well how tasty this place was. The blackened salmon salad looked delicious! A small, remodeled hotel from the old days of railroad travel is unique and the perfect setting. You do have to make a reservation to eat in the tavern but it is definitely worth it! The food was exceptional, the crab ragoons had real crab in them and didn't even need sauce to make them taste good like most places! The salads were huge and the most fresh fruits and veggies. The service was amazing and the old decor made for a great dining experience! Just wish I lived there to go more often! Only thing I would say is the baked goat cheese could have come with 1 or 2 more pieces of bread. We also stayed in the hotel and it was really nice and clean it looked like it had new paint and carpet but still had the old decor to make it look original. We stayed two nights at the Inn and absolutely loved the accommodations. Rooms were cool, comfortable and quaint. Hotel staff are phenomenal! The restaurant has excellent food and our waitress for dinner was so nice - a stark contrast to the hostess who was incredibly rude. We wanted a drink at the bar before our dinner and she refused us, stating the bartender was too busy and there was no room. We left to go elsewhere and saw empty tables and seats in the bar area. We nearly cancelled our reservations but the bartender at the tavern who DID serve us said the food was exceptional. I am sure the food would have tasted decent but my wife never got to eat her food due to the very unsatisfactory, unprofessional, and ultimately disrespectful treatment from the owner. After cutting into my wife's steak we realized it was on the well side of medium. All we asked for was the waitress to take the food back and ask we get what we ordered. The waitress was very reluctant to address the issue and attempted to convince us that this was as it should be (brown on the outside with a small layer of pink in the middle. They brought the plate back out stating the chef would not remake the steak. The waitress was kind enough to take it off the bill, but we wanted to speak with a manager. The chef/owner came out and Frankly was disrespectful. He got all butthurt and stated that he was the professional with 20,000 steaks he has cooked over his 20 year career. Yet, he cannot recognize a medium well steak over a medium rare steak. When you cut open a medium well steak there will be a thin line of pink in the middle and the temp will be 150. Medium rare will have a springy consistency not hard surface. It's about the feel and the color. What we got was the medium well, what he claimed he brought us was the medium rare. He refused to take the steak back and cook one to our satisfaction. It was a real bummer because we heard good things but he isn't Gordon Ramsey. His exact words were "I will make you something else on the menu but I will not make you another steak." To that I say: "If you are thinking about going to the Old Dutch, make an easy decision and go anywhere else. " read more

We were staying with friends way out here and they insisted we come here for dinner. It was cool to see such a unique building and so cool that it is actually an operating hotel. We were a party of four adults and four kids, but had no trouble getting a table around 6p on a weekday. Our server was awesome about bringing the kids' food out fast. Yay! They seemed happy with the burgers, fries and chicken tenders. (Those fries were awesome!!) Hubby and I started with the toasted ravioli. Yes!!! Beg winner here!!! They were everything I wanted. While the burger we shared was huge, the flavors weren't anything special. So I'd definitely go back for the toasted ravs and those fries. What a great recommendation! We decided spur of the moment to take a detour off US 50 and check out Washington. Our hotel front desk clerk recommended Old Dutch. She certainly steered us in the right direction. The space is a refurbished historic building and is hip and hisotric, comfortable and casual all at the same time. It is a little noisy, but we came on a relatively slow night so it wasn't too bad. Linda, our server, did an excellent job of taking care of us, getting our food to us piping hot, keeping our dirnks filled and answering all our questions. She made us feel like she was an old friend welcoming us to her table. The menu is eclectic with steak, burgers, sandwiches, chicken, seafood, pasta, and salads. I had the Pasta Clarence with a house salad. The salad was a fairly standard mix of greens, tomato and house crutons. I requested blue cheese crumbles and the House Italian. It was marvelous. The greens were fresh and the dressing was slightly sweet which made a nice balace with the blye cheese. The Pasta Clarence is ziti and shrimp tossed with grilled artichoke hearts, red pepper and onion all covered with a pesto cream sauce. It was heavenly and the portion was huge. The only negative is it was very heavy. I think I would have liked it if the sauce were just a bit lighter and not so thick. We shared a slice of chocolate pecan pie for dessert. The filling was excellent, but was marred by the crust which tasted slightly burnt. We still managed to eat it all. I would highly recommend this as a great option for casual fine dining. read more

Returned to Old Dutch Restaurant last evening after a 9 month absence. We had a 8 person gathering. Service was prompt and attentive. However, the food was not nearly as good as I remembered. Everything I ordered I have had there before. The meatloaf tasted old and dry, even with the requested additional gravy it wasn't much better. The asparagus and mashed potatoes were good. Also had the fried Calamari with jalapeño peppers, it was a step down from what had been previously offered. All in all, it was a 6 out of 10. Kinda disappointed. Oh, the beer was great. So my fiance and I stayed at the offical Old Dutch Hotel. It was after my cousin's wedding and we got the FULL Old Dutch Hotel and Tavern experience that night because we stayed at the tavern for about two hours before making our way to the hotel room. I must admit, I enjoyed the sit-commy feeling of tossing a few back on the ground floor of the building you are going to sleep in. I give The Old Dutch Hotel 4 starts because everything is top notch. The beds, the sheets, the shower head, you can tell the owners put some serious love into every detail. What loses the star is the size. I knew the main compliant so far has been the size and when we saw our room, I thought "This must be the small room." Upon leaving I realized that the room directly below us was about half the size of the room we stayed in! Overall I would def recommend. So cute. Perfect fit for the area! read more

The new Old Dutch is the bomb! I haven't stayed in the hotel...and I probably never will, since this is where I grew up and I'll never be left wanting for a place to crash when I visit...but judging from the pics and reviews of others it deserves the 5 star rating too! Okay, so about this tavern. The building is almost 90 years old and was reopened last year as part of the downtown Washington revitalization effort. Right from the first time I walked in, I could feel a certain aura about the place. It's one of those places that has definitely succeeded in creating a synergy between style from a bygone era and modern updates. The tiled tin roof is my favorite feature...definitely adds a distinct personality. This is good spot for people that geek out about beer. They have somewhere between 50 and 60 microbrews...both from local breweries and some as far-flung as California. Feel free to chat up your bartender or server about them too...they know what they're talking about. And the menu! I had the BBQ pulled pork sandwich and it was so friggin good I almost ordered another one. They make almost all of their food from scratch, and use Williams Bros. (local butcher) for their meat, which definitely shows. A buddy of mine is the son of one of the owners, and he told me the chef plans on updating the menu every couple months or so to keep it new. And the whole thing is a two minute walk from the shopping district and some great night spots like John G's Bier Deck, The Landing, and Otis Campbell's. Can't go wrong with any of 'em! read more
