The grounds are immaculate, the markers are thoughtfully maintained and the whole place feels like a quiet blend of history and reflection that rewards anyone who takes the time to wander. Climbing towards the upper ridge gives you one of the best surprises here, a clear view of the Dayton skyline rising in the distance through the trees, which adds a nice sense of place to the visit. Woodland Cemetery is large enough to explore without feeling overwhelming, and the mix of shade, rolling hills, and historic figures makes it a genuinely enjoyable stop whether you're here for local history or just a peaceful walk. The roadways in the 'big money' (yes, this is what i refer to the original section as.) have been getting worse as we have been checking in. My favorite spot is on top of the hill where there's a stunning view of Downtown Dayton. Word to the wise, if you're there in your car inside the facility and it's getting close to them closing the gates. Maybe plan on leaving like 15-20mins before they close? Otherwise, you'll have this creepy white pickup truck follow g you around. I know they need you out, but they have learned not to come up and politely ask, they just sit and watch from afar. If you're in to history? Look up the tours in their website. They are incredible. Always informative and you get a ton of stories about the background of some of the folks who are buried here.

Its an interesting combination of old and new that combines history with the future. The old - The original cemetery contained 45 grave sites although only a handful of the markers survive today. Dates on some of the remaining ones date back to the early 1800's and it was originally a family cemetery for the family that lived on the site before it became Wright State University. The new - In the 1970s, expansion of the cemetery was approved for the medical center to inter the bodies of those who had donated their bodies to the medical school. The boy's grandparents had done this and so it was nice to find the brick honoring them and remembering how nice it is that they wanted to continue to do good in death as they had in life. It was a lovely way to honor family members, and as it was Memorial Day, they had been decorated with flags and some family members were there with flowers remembering their loved ones.

My grandmother, like most grandmother's had many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren.. Many of us traveled very far distance to be there, and this place went out of its way to make us uncomfortable. 1st of all... no water, or drinks were provided or offered, 2nd my father's church provided meat, and cheese trays and were not given a private space to put this food.. they had a lobby but this space was occupied by another viewings family as well.. we were told to put a sign saying whose family it was for... seriously... then a man stood outside this room and would not let anyone leave the room with food or drink. He made comments like this isn't a restaurant, this isn't a place for children, etc. When my sister wanted to take our mother some water into the actual viewing, he made a big deal about this... I just think that this wasn't a great experience to celebrate and wonderful grandmother.

Jagged cliffs and rock formations, an amazing variety of trees, birds a plenty, and a lovely hidden waterfall are only the most "obvious" gems to be discovered here. The final resting place of generations of Springfielders (?) is surprisingly TEEMING with LIFE and WELL worth a visit if you're in the area. I believe they offer tours, which I might just have to investigate, so I'm able to see more than what I saw on my quick, only SLIGHTLY creeeeped out recent visit... Julie M. called me on a Sunday and we made an appointment to meet on the following Friday at Newcomer- Centerville. Julie is so nice and down to earth and gave all important information needed for my own cremation. My real relief came when Julie told me about payment plans. I didn't know there are so many choices for cremations. My meeting with Julie was far beyond my expectations. I purchased a plan. When I left I felt such a sense of freedom. I like having a voice in my last 'adventure' on earth. Thank you Julie for such a good experience.

My family has been part of the fabric of New Carlisle for over 100 years. Generations have used this funeral home. The service provided for my mother failed in nearly every way. Trostle's mismanagement ruined her graveside service. Nobody was scheduled to assist for the urn to be buried at the cemetery. We had to come back a week later to bury her. It's been over two years now with multiple phone calls and her death date is still not engraved on the tombstone! As I am writing this, it's Memorial Day weekend... It's time to show respect and do better!
