The marker reads, "Broad Street Station served passengers of the Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac Railway and the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad from 6 Jan. 1919 until 15 Nov. 1975. This Neoclassical Revival station was the only commercial building designed by John Russell Pope, who also designed the Branch House in Richmond and the Jefferson Memorial, National Gallery of Art, and National Archives in Washington, D.C. This station is noted architecturally for its Classical details, hundred-foot-high rotunda, and cast-iron and steel butterfly canopies that sheltered travelers from the weather. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1971, the station became the home of the Science Museum of Virginia in 1977." Great to see places becoming other, wonderful places. I stopped into a nearby convenience store to grab a soda and ask about parking. One of the owners generously offered to let me park in his lot. It was a kind gesture I much appreciated. Although it's in the middle of a bustling area, once inside the brick walls, the noise diminishes. Perhaps because your focus moves from the traffic to the view. It's about two acres and part of a Civil War battlefield. I was expecting mostly older headstones and was surprised to see markers up to and through the Gulf War. There's a tie to the recent and the local. Most of the trees, save one or two, are around the perimeter of the cemetery outside the wall. I didn't count seven pine trees for which this place was named, there may have been, but there were more than seven trees of some kind and that was close enough. Here I saw no headstones lost to large trees, unusual in a cemetery with origins to the Civil War. On the list of what this cemetery doesn't have, besides parking, easy access, buried or damaged headstones, there are also no huge markers or monolithic headstones of some military officer. It's just a simple historic cemetery with ties to the small town around it. Seven Pines probably gets lost in the attention of that larger neighbor and with no available parking, and an adjoining sidewalk a gasp away from the heavy and rushing traffic, that's a disservice, I think. It's a nice place, full of history, and worth more than a diversionary glance as you wait in your car for the traffic light to change.

Whenever visitors come to see us from other states, we always take them on a drive down this iconic Avenue! Monument Avenue is unique and beautifully maintained. The various houses along the drive are well kept and architecturally appealing. From Colonial, to Spanish, to English Tudor, and other styles, you will enjoy seeing these lovely Southern homes. In the spring, the pear trees, crape myrtles, dogwoods and other trees burst into bloom leaving a spectacular site among the flowers that line the median. I love the areas where there is some old cobblestones preserved from bygone days. The monuments are a testament to our Virginia history. While we take our drive, we like to have the passengers google the various statues and brush up on the various historic and modern figures, learn about their background, catch a glimpse of the past and really get a sense of our place in the present. If you're a history buff, love buildings or scenic views, a leisurely drive down this landmark avenue is a Richmond treat!

As a bit of a Civil War history buff, I was disappointed that the statues do not have much educational information to explain the lives of the people they depict. It's an educational opportunity wasted to not put them into context. It is also difficult to appreciate the sculptors' work on such a busy street, but that actually goes to show that the original intent of the Avenue has succeeded. After the death of General Robert E. Lee in 1870, land owned by Otway C. Allen was chosen as the future site of a Lee memorial statue and a larger avenue of monuments dedicated to famous Confederate Virginians, Including J.E.B. Stuart, Stonewall Jackson, and Jefferson Davis. (Fun fact: Interestingly, Lee explicitly stated before his death that he did not wish any statues to be erected in his honor, nor any symbols of the Confederacy to be kept and displayed.) Oceanographer Matthew Maury and tennis player Arthur Ashe later joined the Avenue in 1929 and 1996. The City of Richmond and developers hoped such a street, scenically lined by trees and flowers, would attract wealthy Richmonders to the area and raise property values. A century later the Avenue still attracts home buyers, tourists, and protesters alike as a major landmark.

First time here. I'm a bit of a history nerd so I knew of it's history and existence but never…read moremade it here. It's pretty easy to get to. The fort is around a 1/4 mile walk from the parking "lot". Plenty of shade and very pleasant. Trip is about a mile or so..The fort itself is in pretty good shape given her age and that it's made of earth. There is an observation deck overlooking the exact spot on the James from the 1862 battle with the Monitor and others. My suggestion would be to cut the tops of the trees down that face the James from the platform. I think it would give a better idea of the forts commanding geographical position on the river. Good for kids making their first Civil War battlefield trips. No where really to run to. Very recommended

I definitely don't mind reading, but I had difficulty following the order of the markers. I am pretty sure I missed numerous stops along the way. We decided to turn back after walking over an overpass. We figured we may have ventured off the tour. Nevertheless, I enjoyed walking, learning, and exploring the city. Maybe I will try again on another visit and after some research.

There's also a branch of Virginia Tourism located here, which makes it handy for visitors who need maps, directions, or brochures of other city attractions.

My grandmother passed and Bliley's handled the viewing and transfer to Amelia Veterans Cemetery for the service. I ordered a large standing heart to be displayed at her viewing on their site. When I arrived to the viewing it was not there and I spoke with a young man who seemed unconcerned who suggested I call the florist. I explained that I did not know who the florist was as I had ordered through them. He went to an office and wrote down the phone number of a local florist and said I should call them in the morning. I explained to him that the funeral service was in the morning. All of this concerned me that he seemed to be unaware of as he was standing in front of the room for her viewing where all of this was posted. I was very upset that one side of her casket was bare as the other standing arrangement my cousin ordered was there but my matching one was missing for the viewing but the young man assured me that the florist could get it to the service in the morning. Somehow I knew this was impossible if I was calling them when they opened barely an hour before her funeral. But I still called in the morning and surprise, the florist did not have the order and could not help me. I called Bliley's and spoke with someone and explained what had happened again- they were unaware of the issue from the night before so it was like starting from scratch. They then directed me to an outside company that manages their Tribute Wall and said they would call me back. I contacted the other company who acknowledged that they had taken the payment the week prior but that at this point it was too late to send the arrangement to the funeral. You don't say! They said "I guess we will issue you a refund". I said I guess you'd better. I would like to point out that I was calm and courteous during each of these interactions and only during the viewing when I noticed the missing arrangement was I slightly teary eyed because it was the viewing after all. But not ONCE did anyone from Bliley's or their payment processor apologize or say anything resembling an I'm sorry for ruining your memory of your grandmother's service. Not only did they not apologize, Bliley's staff never called me back or even attempted to make the situation right and have the flowers at the service. For something as important as a memorial service or viewing I won't ever recommend a business that ignores issues and doesn't even try to rectify them. Oh I almost forgot! Because they processed my refund they removed the post that I made when I ordered the arraignment on their Tribute Wall from my kids to their great grandmother.
