I love Old Pioneer Inn! Mitzi and David are wonderful, warm hosts. This is a great place to unplug (literally- don't count on cell reception), commune with nature, and enjoy the history in each of the cottages and of land. If you are scared of nature, this may not be the place for you. But if you can slow down, enjoy hikes, appreciate a home cooked breakfast, baby goats, cottonwoods, and a rushing creek, you will be right at home. The deserts and the mountains surround the buildings, and there are antiques in each room. Where to begin. The owner Mitsy is a witch completley. We were lied to about our month to month rent and kicked out during during the covid19 quarantine order with a 2 year old son and 12 year old daughter. Even though we were paid up till the 6th of April and we left March 30. Even had Aprils rent in hand in cash 2 weeks prior. Houses are filthy as well spiders, webs, ants, mice, dirty, mold, etc. I wouldn't recommend this dump to my worst enemy!!!! read more

The accommodation was spacious, the bed okay, and the breakfast good for our one-night stay a month ago. There were signs this place is popular with a longtime clientele, as though everything were fine. However business with proprietor Dave, who possesses an oblique charm that promises more than is delivered, was far too much of a disappointment to recommend. I agree with the reviews that urge avoiding this place, and for similar reasons. Due to an online booking snafu, I was charged twice. The proprietor was well aware of this and multiple times insisted that this double charge would be corrected so that I did not pay twice. When I have been able to communicate since our stay--not easy to do, for some reason, via the email address given or the online message form--this promise was repeated. Now five weeks later I have in fact paid the double charge via my credit card bill and the redundant charge has not been reversed. Of what value is the proprietor's word? Given the time that has passed, I no longer expect things will be put right and assume that I've been hoodwinked. What was potentially an okay experience turned very sour. You've been cautioned. I have stayed at Old Pioneer Garden with my extended family over several years. It is a great opportunity for my kids to have limited screen time, great family dinners, lots of time for games and walks and reading. Coming from NYC it is difficult to create family time and slow down. At Old Pioneer Garden we all get to decompress in a beautiful place. We typically rent rooms in a very comfortable, well equipped house (one of several), stock up on groceries in Fernley or Winnemucca and hole up for a week with grandparents and extended family. Mitzi's breakfasts are great and there are always baby goats, chickens, loving dogs and other folks for interesting conversations. If you have trouble being far removed from the city or the occasional critter or bug, then maybe OPG is not a good fit. If you love beautiful starry nights, gorgeous scenery, the howl of coyotes at night and the chance to decompress in a comfy atmosphere, then OPG is worth checking out. read more

This place is a fraud! They advertised an apartment in the barn for rent. We made the long trip up for an interview. Had to sit around waiting for the mom to wake up so she could meet us. Had a nice chat, they said it was ours so we paid for it. During the next week I spoke with david a couple times, everything was great. Then sat morn we were getting ready to move up he called and said no. Now they didn't want us!! I explained we only had a matter of days to find another place which would be very difficult since we have outside animals which they had approved and even showed us where we could keep them. Anyway he didn't care we would most likely end up homeless with our animals and said the rent refund check was in the mail which I'm waiting for. Another very strange thing is he kept asking when they could meet my Daughter...don't take your little girls to that place... read more

Stayed here twice, out and back on our round trip to Idaho. And with the exception of some confusion over rooms, we were pleasantly surprised. First off, they are quite a ways off the beaten path - close to 30 minutes from the freeway so be forewarned. About the time you start arguing that you have gone too far just keep driving another few miles. Look for the row of rural mailboxes and the right turn onto the gravel road that disappears into the base of the mountain. This place has the market cornered on solitude, so if you are looking to unplug from society and decompress for a bit, this is the place. Yes they have Wi-Fi but it's relatively basic. Yes your cell phones will be out of range. Yes you might find a dead spider to two in your shower. Yes there will be some cobwebs on the ceiling. Yes the bathroom towels are likely to be mismatched, but this is the desert and these are 150 year old buildings so try and keep things in perspective. If you are used to staying at the Raddison it's probably best that you book elsewhere. This place is more akin to visiting your aunt and uncle's farm than anything else. The grounds are beautiful, with a creek that is both tranquil and begging for pictures. And breakfast is the bomb, served in the host's private home (aka the office) ...farm fresh and the kind of hearty that stays with you for half the day. On our visit we were served oatmeal with various toppings, waffles, scrambled eggs, ham steak and fresh milk. Things to keep in mind: The smaller Bungalow is a two bedroom two bath house that can sleep 5, or, be made semi private by closing a door off the living room to separate the bedrooms. However, the larger bedroom's bath doesn't (or didn't) have a door, and that was a problem as we were traveling with our teenage daughter. Our hosts graciously allowed us to use both rooms and bathrooms but only charged us for the one room. The larger Bunkhouse on the other hand, was intentionally set up to be semi private and has doors that can be opened or closed depending on the number in your group, or, they are just busy and doubling people up. However the kitchen is communal, so be prepared to mingle if you are using the microwave. A bonus is this building has a washer and dryer which the smaller Bungalow does not. Lastly, this is a family business primarily run my a octogenarian mother and her retired son. And while they were very gracious hosts, you have to remember that you are staying in converted out buildings so there is a level of self sufficiency required while you're there. If you require a corkscrew or a cappuccino maker, best you bring one, and if you need more towels or another blanket be prepared to open a few cupboards and look around for them. read more

We had a wonderful stay here with our kids (ages 8, 5 & 1). It was an adventure getting there and well worth it. Tucked far up in the high desert mountains out of cell range you will find this amazing bed and breakfast run by Mitzi and her son Dave. Their family has restored several pioneer homes in this once thriving ghost town and we were lucky to stay in one and enjoyed watching millions of stars followed by a beautiful sunrise and the best country breakfast made straight out of Mitzi's garden. They were such kind hosts, Dave let our kids hand feed the two week old goats and Mitzi (who is in her 90s by the way), made waffles with fresh strawberries, skillet potatoes and eggs from her chickens and picked peaches from her trees. She even packed up a bunch for a nice couple staying the same time that were headed to Burning Man because she worried they wouldn't have enough to eat all week. It is definitely off the beaten path and light years away from a hotel stay. It was an experience we will never forget and we encourage anyone with a heart for adventure to stay with them! read more

I would love to give great review but unfortunately I can't. My husband and I were looking forward to our stay here but our truck's engine blew up on interstate 80 just outside of battle mountain. I called the people at the old pioneer inn and explained our situation as we were sitting on the freeway waiting for the tow truck. I asked if we were going to be charged and the man on the phone said he would have to check with the boss and he would have that person call me back, he did not take my number though so I called back, I got the recording and it was his voice. I left a message to have some one please call me. They did not, that night they charged my card. I called the next morning and a woman said she was not the one in charge but would have someone call me, they never have. I understand if it was to late, but I would have appreciated a call, if I had known we were going to be charged we would have just left the truck in Battle Mountain at the repair shop and drove our car to the bed and breakfast instead of forking out another $80.00 for a hotel. That would have been my plan but once we got back on the road I was going to just go there and talk to them. In Winnemucca I Google mapped the location and found out it is not 12 miles from there it is 40. This is a scam.... DO NOT MAKE RESERVATIONS HERE!! Customer service is obviously not as important to them as your money is. read more
