I am the property manager for a large home owned by my brother who lives out of state, We recently used Old Pueblo Masonry (Steve Carlson owner) to build a block wall around a huge yard and I want to sing their praises. I have never been so pleased with the professionalism, quality of work from start to finish. Steve took the time to update me at all times on the progress with pics to show the work they were doing, he answered any questions or concerns I had and was always polite and forthcoming. We had a small concern about the guy contracted to do our gates, Steve checked the finished product, was not pleased, stopped hiring this guy to do his gates, hired a new contractor to build the gates and Steve made sure to oversee the finished product along with pics to show the work done. We could not be more thrilled with the process and outcome of building a 180 linear foot block wall, 7 feet high with 6X8X16 block (1,260 square feet). Planning process: Steve the owner was personally involved from the beginning, providing a quote, a revised quote and being readily available through project conclusion. Steve met us on site and took the time to explain the entire wall build process, walked us through the post tensioning wall build, listened to our desires and answered all our initial questions. He was consistent each time he set a deadline beginning with providing the quote and then revising a turnaround quote within one day based on an increase in job scope that we requested. His quote was timely and reasonably priced. Upon first meeting Steve, I felt our project was in great hands and now that it has concluded - we could not have been more correct. Worked with Barbara on payments tied to contractual milestones - all extremely reasonable. Barbara was always responsive on returning telephone messages and emails, very communicative - a pleasure to work with throughout the process. Wall Build: Highly empowered team of 5 began on day 1 of execution. Four-day build, a team that worked wonderfully together. The onsite Foreman Eddie was an absolute perfectionist and his leadership on site was outstanding. It was clear from the beginning, Eddie was overseeing, leading, training and perfecting the placement of each block throughout the entire process. I am not embellishing when I say this team worked essentially non-stop on site and their attitudes were unbelievably positive despite temperatures averaging between 85-100 degrees most of the workday. Speaking of time on site, they arrived consistently each day, not later than 6:30 and concluding around 2:00 when the UV rating hits an average of 10 or 11. I had very few questions during the build, but when I did, Eddie always paused and took the time to thoroughly explain and address any of my questions. Finally, it was great seeing a team truly operate as a 'Team'. Closeout and cleanup: Left the yard in better shape than when the job began. All concrete leftovers, rebar, extra material, porta potty, raking residual concrete stones...Bottom line: the yard and wall look incredible, and I truly feel like this review falls short in the sense that I could go on and on about how pleased we were with the project and outcome. read more

I ended up going with a different contractor, but only because OPM couldn't get me on their schedule for a few weeks. Normally that minor delay would not have been a problem, but I needed construction to start ASAP due to an issue with a bothersome neighbor. The process in dealing with Steve Carlson was very smooth because he's very knowledgeable and very professional, and his bid was very reasonable. I had every confidence that he would do a great job, but unfortunately due to other circumstances I had to go with another bid. I decided to leave this review in order to recommend this business to others looking for a quality builder for their masonry project. He was not the cheapest bid, nor the most expensive, but he is a reliable communicator, licensed, bonded, insured; everything is professionally done. We needed to raise the level and improve the substance of the low courtyard walls that framed our front door. Steve showed up on time, discussed ways to improve the whimpy walls, and then delivered. This was a small job that his team treated thoughtfully as they constructed solid looking walls with a flair and capped the pillars with concrete caps. My neighbor and I both needed a new block wall, and through the neighbor's extensive research, we chose to go with Old Pueblo. This was about 10 years ago, and I must say I still LOVE our quite beautiful terra cotta colored block walls! They did a fantastic job, and to this day it looks brand new! I did not have a good experience with this company. They were contracted to build a patio wall and during the job a number of problems occurred. The workers ran out of capstones and instead of going across town to get more, they just slapped some regular bricks on top of the wall. Also a significant section of our wall was set in a crooked fashion. The foreman was quick with excuses for these screw ups. Overall they were not professional about their work. I cannot recommend them. read more

Old Pueblo Masonry is a small company owned by, as I understand it, Steve Carlson, who I have not met. The company is one of the few licensed contractors in Tucson who, along with new masonry construction, also do masonry repairs, which is what my home required. My slump block home needed parapet stabilization and repair, and re-grouting of several grout separations. Dave, the estimator, supervisor and manager for the repair division of Old Pueblo Masonry, came by in a timely fashion and looked at the repairs I had in mind. He then walked the perimeter of the home observing, with seeming X-ray vision, some other structural problem areas with minor or potential damage due to poor water runoff, made a few suggestions about what was needed (tuck pointing) to slow any potential damage. I'd had two other estimates from unlicensed masonry workers for only the parapet work which came in at half the bid for this job, but which did not include the extra work of tuck pointing & crack sealing. So with the extra work, I felt the estimate was about right. What really sold me on OPM, however, was the years of experience (45) and profound knowledge Dave had (revealed in the many anecdotes he relayed during the estimate) about block construction, as well as his his firm conviction that he does or supervises all work done, and that the work would be done right. As I recall it did take some time to finally receive the estimate, but when it came I signed on right away. My confidence was rightly placed as it turned out. The work took about three days on and off. Dave oversaw and helped Mike with the work. Mike's got an artist's eye for matching color, and another 45 years of experience in the field (to go with Dave's 45). It was a great relief to have the work done quickly and well. While I don't plan more repairs or construction, I'm keeping their number handy to give to anyone who is needing new masonry construction or repair. (they accept credit cards but charge another 4%. don't know about "apple pay") read more

I was really pleased with the entire process from this place. I had 4 estimates made for my project: a 100 foot long, 6 foot tall 8x8x16 concrete block wall for my back yard. Of all the companies I worked with, OPM was clearly the most professional of the bunch. I was given a welcome packet outlining the exact methods, schedule of events, procedures, business licences, and just about everything else I could want to know about the place. The owner (Steve, I think his name is) came to my property and took notes on some sort of computer device and offered to email me the estimate the next day. He was very friendly, courteous, and was willing to answer any and all questions I had. I got the estimate the next day and nothing surprising, but the quote was the highest of the 4 companies I had approached. I called the company, informed them that I would prefer to use them since they were clearly the most professional choice, but if they could not price match their competitors, that I was going to go elsewhere. Price was somewhat of a concern for me. Steve got back to me the next day and told me he had ran his numbers and was able to give me a new quote. It was now the second highest quote I had received, but I was content with that seeing as how the difference between the highest and lowest quotes was now only $300 as opposed to $700. Steve came over to sign contracts a few days later. Everything was on the up and up, nothing hidden or worry-some here. I received at this time the pay schedule which was quite reasonable. I was a little unhappy with the start date being 3 weeks out, but ultimately I knew that I was going to get the best wall I could with this company. My only other complaint with this company is around this time in that I was concerned with the possibility of my dogs getting out of our yard in the interim. That, after all, is the reason I was having this wall built. Our previous wooden fence had fallen down in a storm and was only being propped up and our dogs had found a way to escape 3 times. Steve had told me upon signing the contracts that "probably tomorrow" he could get people out there to put up temporary fencing while we waited for the job to get done. This never happened, despite my calling to ask what was going on about a week later. The temporary fencing did not arrive until the day that they started work on the wall--which is not unreasonable, I just would have preferred not being promised falsely. Beyond that, everything went off without a hitch. The guys began work on time, did an excellent and thorough job, and stayed on schedule. The workers were friendly, and were careful not to make a huge mess of my yard while performing their work. The small, inevitable messes that were created, were promptly cleaned up upon completion of the job. The payment situation was less strict than I thought it might be in that I was told the first payment would be due on the first day of work...well, despite my being ready for that, nobody who could accept the check from me was actually on site for the first couple days lol. It did nothing to slow them down, however. The two final payments, although they were supposed to occur at different points in the completion process both occurred after the work was complete and all cleanup had been done. They did not wait on me to get my yard back in good order--much appreciated. All in all, I was very VERY pleased with the professionalism of this place, with the quality of workmanship, and with the expedience and kindness of their workers. Last year, we were looking for wall builders to replace our cracking and sinking wooden fence with a concrete or some type of block wall that was sturdy, but also visually appealing. Steve, the company president, came to inspect the property and our old fence, and showed us a portfolio of choices in addition to what we saw on the website. We had checked with the Arizona Registrar of Contractors to make sure whichever contractor we hired was licensed, bonded, had enough insurance in case we developed issues down the road. We also check with the BBB. We discovered Old Pueblo Masonry was had enough and current insurance, was properly registered and they have an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. This factored in our decision, since one of the other bidders had a spotty record. After getting bids from five contractors, we decided on Old Pueblo Masonry. Old Pueblo Masonry built a retaining wall and block fence for the around the house, replacing the cracking wooden fence and to stop the eroding soil. They offered a reasonable project quote and showed up on time. The retaining wall was extra enforced, with a split face for a very nice visual effect. Old Pueblo Masonry was very specific in their contract about the process and also have good information on their website. Pati, the business manager, was quick to answer any questions we had on the contract and process. We had some challenging area, like around a palm tree and to make sure certain vegetation was not disturbed. They did a good job of working around that as well as making sure we had any fees and permits with the city of Tucson taken care of. Steve and his crew were great. Steve returned our call quickly and came to our home within a couple of days to give us an estimate. We had an idea of what we wanted but Steve helped us design the perfect back yard. It took them a couple of weeks to get started as he was finishing other jobs but it was well worth the wait. Steve and his team transformed our yard into a paradise. We had our brick wall extended to the front of the house, pavers installed to create sitting areas, a beautiful outdoor fireplace, flower beds, and a foutain. My experience didn't get beyond Patty the office person. I had emailed them over the weekend and when I hadn't heard back I called. She said I was on her list. She asked about my job then my address. She said she didn't know if he would want to drive that far what with the price of fuel [diesel]. She said she would have to get back to me. She made me feel like I wasn't worth their time. I am not sure where the problem originated in this particular bid, but it happened. The following is my account of the events: Steve showed up to my property on Saturday (8/10), and spent a fair amount of time with me talking about our ideas and his recommendations. Steve was very professional and seemed to have a solid grasp of this type of work. I was looking forward to working with him and Old Pueblo Masonry. At the end of his visit, Steve assured me that he would have his proposal to me by Tuesday (8/13) or Wednesday (8/14) of the following week. I placed a phone call to Steve's phone on Thursday (8/15). No one answered, so I left a message requesting a status on the bid. A female returned my call later that day and informed me that Steve was a little behind on bids due to an injury that left him unable to get off the floor. I have had nasty back pain before so I accepted this delay justification. The woman then told me that as soon as the bid is ready they would email it to me. Having still not received the emailed bid, I placed another follow-up call on Thursday (8/22) to Old Pueblo Masonry. Again there was no answer and I left a message. The same woman returned my call. I asked her what the status of the bid was. She seemed surprised that I had not already received it and told me it was emailed to me the previous week. I acknowledged that email issues happen. Then I asked her for the email address she mailed it to. She said that she emailed it to an address that had contained an "N" instead of the correct "W". I wrote the email address on the paperwork myself. I write very clearly and do not use cursive. That aside, I then asked when it was originally emailed. She told me it was emailed on 8/13. If you are keeping count, this is two days prior to the date of the phone call in which she told me Steve was injured. She immediately emailed the bid to the correct email address. I opened it and read the attached document. Right on the bid: "Date: 8/19/2013" and "Email: *W******@gmail.com". Things come up in life. I am an understanding person until I am lied to. It is hard to look at how this all went down and not realize there was a lie or three told here. Had this been a completely honest communication, I would still consider hiring you for this job. Unfortunately, this was not the case. It is on these grounds that I will not be conducting business with Old Pueblo Masonry. read more

I had my entry wall destroyed by a car. Old Pueblo did the rebuild. First, they rebuilt the wall, block work, stucco work and paint work in one day. I'm a retired general contractor so I was surprised when I came home and the wall was done. Soon after, the wall developed some cracks. They came out to fix the cracks, but the paint work did not match the wall adjacent to this wall. When I called them about this, they were too busy to address my concerns. Looking at it today, there are several cracks AND bubbles in the wall. I called them to see if they would correct this shoddy workmanship, The female receptionist was very rude on the phone and blatantly said they would not even come out to address my concerns, and suddenly hung up on me! UNBELIEVALE!!! Now I'm stuck with finding another masonry company to correct their lousy work. I'm a professional, so I know how to respond to complaints, you don't hang up on the person just because you don't like hearing a complaint! The real way to respond to a complaint is to discuss on to make your customer happy. I hope that anyone reading this will reconsider using this company, there are plenty of good masonry companies around!!! I've posted a complaint with the BBB and the R.O.C. This company talks like a good, professional company in the beginning, but watch out, when problems come up, they run and hide, and WON'T address any issue you may have, and by reading other complaints about them, I'm not the only one with complaints about their workmanship or returning your phone calls.
