I did not stay there before the hurricane, so I can't speak to how the resort use to be; but I can tell you that it's a great place today. They recently in the past 6 months reopened to the public after an extensive reconstruction and remodal. They did a fantastic job keeping the "Old Florida" charm as well as upgrading to more modern amenities. I could not be more pleased by the friendliness and knowledge of the staff running the El Governor. They were super awesome the entire stay and went out of their way to anwser any questions we had or make recommendations for us. They even noticed that the rate we paid online was higher than the special they were running and adjusted our bill accordingly. It's always nice to get money back. The updated rooms were very clean and inviting. I love the fact that you can walk in the front door of the room and walk out the back to your own private balcony. Did I mention all rooms have a balcony facing the beach and gulf? That's awesome! Also every room sports a kitchenette with a range/oven, sink, microwave, full size refrigerator, Kurig, and is stocked with everything you need to cook (dishes, pots & pans, and utinsels). The room we were in had 2 full size beds that were very comfortable. The television in the room has a lot of channels and you are able to use mobile mode to stream your favorite movies and shows. The hotel amenities include a nice new heated pool, small splash pad, gazebo with swings and chairs, a new bar area (to be open soon), and it's right on the beach with access. There is even a gift shop with souvenirs, snacks, wine, beer, and even a small selection of liquor. Across from the hotel is an RV park for guests who enjoy bringing their RVs down for a visit. I will warn you about the parking; it can be a little tricky as it's tight. This past weekend the hotel was packed out and it was difficult getting a space in front of the hotel. There is overflow parking across the street in front of the RV lot if the parking lot does get filled up; or you have a larger vehicle. We enjoyed our visit so much that I'm planning another visit in the next couple of months; once it's warmer outside.

There was a full sized kitchen that was fully stocked with dishes, pots &pans, and even grill utensils. There was a small dining table with 4 chairs. There is even a stacking washer/dryer. The small pool out front is 3-5' deep. There's also a community grill and pavilion with chairs and lounge chairs. You can walk to so many restaurant's and boutiques. The only thing keeping this place from being 5 stars is the bathroom. There was mold on the shower curtain, mold on the windows sill, and rust showing through the paint next to the tub. If they would fix that, then the location, size of the unit, and the amenities would make it a five star.

I'll go to pelican walk rentals from now on we stayed there one year and the washer quit working one phone call and within a few hours they had Lowe's deliver a new washer!

In fact, no one even apologized for our nightmare or offered to assist us, besides moving our luggage. If you have ever been faced with Bedbugs (this was our very first experience) then you will know the nightmare that we had, and are still going through 5 weeks post vacation.) Bedbugs aside, this place is disappointing to say the least. The website states "luxury vacation". This place has ZERO luxury. It is best described as rustic camping on the beach on an island. No restaurants, no bars, barely any staff, FILTHY rooms! (After we were reassigned a new bungalow, I spent 8 hours cleaning it.) The owner asked why we stayed if our experience was so bad. Let's remember that we are on an Island!!! We took a plane, and then It took us 6 hours to get there by boat! We don't have a car, and we don't have anywhere else to go! We didn't have a lot of options being part of a group. Also worth noting, the bungalow that we were reassigned to didn't even have running water in one of the bathrooms. We were told that this is a common problem on the island and nothing can be done! So we all had to share one small bathroom!!! For $850 night, we expected running water and clean rooms. After a 4 week battle we were refunded half of our money. That means the other half of our money went to pay for a filthy bungalow and one non usable master bathroom. So if you want a rustic beach vacation with no amenities, little staff, a dirty rental, and bedbugs, then this is the vacation spot for you! Just remember to bring your own cleaning supplies!

Well we all know that all State Parks aren't created equal, the condition of the park plays a part…read morein that but also it's about the amenities which includes the camp store when available. This SP has two camp stores on the property, one close to the campground, this one has a variety of things camper might need, whether that's food stuffs, cold beverages and a few items that you might need to repair or replace something on your camper. This location also rents golf carts and bicycles along with some souvenirs and tee-shirts. The staff here is very friendly and accommodating, the prices are okay considering anything you purchase here is out of convenience or necessity, as an example a small bag of ice will run you almost five dollars - we have an ice maker but prefer not to use the campground's potable water here or anywhere for consumption. The second campstore is located at the beach across from the jetty, it's more about beach gear and they also off hot food from its concession stand / food truck. All in all this SP rates pretty high when it comes to onsite supplies with one exception - there is no propane onsite although there are a number of retailers to fill your bottles within a few miles of the park...
