Old stuff in an old place If you like antiques and enjoy old buildings it's difficult to find a cooler place than Stone Mill. The building was an old textile mill built way back in about 1814. Huge blocks of stone form the outside and impressive exposed beams and steep staircases are obvious once inside. A roaring fire and all the old wood and items gives the interior a great smell. Not nasty, stinky and musky but just old and cool. You can hear the echos of the past in here and It's still easy to imagine what this joint must have been like two hundred years ago when the mill was still operational. All kinds of sundry and interesting items are for sale. Lots of strange and unique antiques, country furniture, various collectibles and things that defy classification. Of course the inventory is always changing and you never know what you will find. The folks that work there are knowledgeable and fun and we had great conversations about antiques, history and what it must have been like to work in one of these old mills. They seem to enjoy describing and discussion some of their more bizarre finds. I like old stuff and this place is filled with it. In fact the coolest old thing is the building itself. Just so much fun to slowly walk around and look at all the idiosyncratic features of this great building while hearing the fire and the sound of the Chepachet River. Not only a great place to find some cool and unique antiques and old stuff but a building where you can still feel the history and past dripping off the walls. read more

Debbie, the owner is a complete menace, and a disappointment to the vendors who entrust her to help sell their stuff. As soon as we entered she was yelling and screaming at just about everybody and everything. At first we thought it was kind of an act because it was over the top. She drove every customer out. People were looking at each other completely confused as to what was going on. My son was attempting to buy a lamp that didn't work and was trying to see if she would take a little bit off the price. Not only did she refuse, she grabbed the item out of his hands and refused to sell it to him. I was also trying to purchase an item when she told us we couldn't 't buy anything, She had forced two other customers out while we were there. Not sure if she was under the influence of something or not, but it was bizarre. Her behavior was irrational. We mentioned the episode to other shop owners, but they indicated that was not unusual. I feel bad for customers trying to have a nice time as well as the vendors trying to sell their items. Whatever her situation is; it's not good for business and not for the feint of heart. read more

Chepachet is a lovely old New England Village. The old stone mill and other antiques stores on the street are full of interesting finds. All the shops are very quaint. The Brown and Hopkins General store smells amazing! One disturbing thing is about the history of Chepachet. We parked on a bridge and noticed this sign (see attached) about the random murder of an elephant named Bett by musket fire. Seriously read more

What a great place. None of the 'craft' sections, just good old fashion antiques and 'honest' collectables. No collectables that were made in China last week. The place is a little back off the road, so be careful and don't pass it up. It is huge on the inside and well laid out. The prices are a little up and down. Some great deals to be found and some where you can tell it was from an estate and the kids are getting a little greedy. That being said, what are you going to do. I am sure a simple phone call and a little haggling can solve some of those issues. The folks working the counter arte friendly and first rate. read more

This is one of my favorite antique stores in Chepachet. I never know what I'm going to find when I go there. I found some cool shells to put in my shade garden when I went there this summer. There's even a working fireplace that's lit in the winter, so you can come in and warm up after getting out of the cold. I also found some really cool Christmas presents here, like a Cheap Trick record for my uncle's record player and a heart shaped pin for one of my cousins. I also found three Alice Cooper albums for five bucks apiece - i don't know too many places where you can do that. From records to CD's and furniture to odds and ends, you never know what you'll find unless you decide to walk through the door and find out for yourself. read more
