I have found the best Chinese food I have eaten has always been outside of the United States. Located in London's. Chinatown, this is one of the spots open late (until 3:30am) and the food is delicious! Small seating space downstairs but there is also an upstairs area. The food came out lightning quick and our group devoured everything almost just as quick -- a testament to how good the food was. The star of the show was most definitely the LSE fried rice, which was topped with a decadent, savory egg sauce that is sure to leave a lasting impression. Think egg drop soup meets beef fried rice in the most delicious way imaginable. We also enjoyed the stir fried green beans with salted egg yolk sauce, which packed a nice crunch with an interesting mix of sweet and savory notes from the salted egg. We were in a rush to get dinner and randomly picked this place. We got the fish congee, shrimp toast, and morning glory with garlic. The food came amazingly fast. Congee was fine with plenty of fish and heavy on the ginger. The shrimp toast was greasy as expected. The morning glory was quite tender and flavorful although a bit on the salty side. The bok choy with garlic sauce - top notch. The braised beef with Cantonese soup - top notch (great broth, tender flavorful beef), the pork noodle soup - solid (the pork was a little lean). When you're in Chinatown late at night and need a quick snack before heading back home, Old Town 97 may be one of the only options you have on a weeknight. My friends and I were craving some egg noodles and that is exactly what we got to quell our cravings. This place feels like a bustling Hong Kong Cafe opened late and ready to serve some quick Cantonese food. You've got plenty of options from soup noodles to congee, to westernized rice dishes. Every plate was priced at around £7-£10 so it isn't the cheapest spot, but you're in the heart of London so that's to be expected. At first we thought there would be no seating until they took us upstairs. The three of us ordered wonton noodles and boba (yes, that is what I call this amazing beverage). Our noodles took a bit longer than we thought to arrive given how easy they are to prepare. Each bowl contained four wontons and a helping of noodles in broth. Did it get the job done? Yes. Was it absolutely amazing? Not quite... but still okay. For a quick fix, this is the place to go. However, I imagine there would be better Cantonese food elsewhere in the area if they were open late. Be careful as they have a £10 minimum when it comes to credit cards, so you may as well order a drink with your meal to meet that requirement. read more

This is by far the best place to have Peking Duck. I've been here on 3 different occasions on trips to London, and it has never disappointed on the duck order. The meat is perfectly cooked with just the right amount of crisp. The combination with the hoisin sauce, veggies and pancakes is unbeatable. Pancakes are always cooked perfectly. I tried 2 of the spicy Curry options on the menu once, and they were not spicy at all! There was practically no flavor to those dishes, so that's why I dropped a star. Me and my friend were trying to find a place to eat after working late and THIS was a hidden gem. Before entering I looked at the reviews but since all of them were 5 to 7 years old and mostly negative, we still decided to go in and try it and I must say, it was the BEST decision we took. They are EXTREMELY quick and super friendly. I saw someone in the reviews said they weren't given a receipt but we have and they even split the bill for us. I saw someone also said cash only however we ended up paying in card. I guess this place has had a lot of changes for the better. The food was banging. Idk what else people want considering the prices were honest and reasonable. I would specifically say something, the staff working upstairs deserve a 10/10 alone. This place was recommended by a friend from Hong Kong which normally should be a good sign. It was a total disappointment. While the service is nice and friendly, the choice of typical Chinese dishes is extensive, the quality is below mediocre. The Hainan chicken was still one of the better tasting dish, the wonton noodle soup was a total disaster. The noodles were over cooked, the shrimp soggy and the skin too thick. First time here and NEVER want to come back!!! We were a group of 5 rushing to the restaurants because that was one of the rare choices we have left. Came in and haven't sat down for 3 minutes, one of the staffs there who was a guy with glasses was very rude to us. He kept standing there staring at us although we said we hadn't been ready yet. Moreover, he kept ignoring us. And while he was taking the order for us, his attitude was impolite and disrespectful. One of my friends was annoyed by him and asked him if he was a staff there. He replied quickly with just a glance saying that yes. She commented that he was not very nice then once again, he completely ignored what she said. Besides the service, there was a problem with the payment there as well. We did not want to pay the service charge (10%) so we told the other staff. We only ordered 2 beef tribes, 1 big bowl of jasmine rice, 2 small soups and 5 teas. Surprisingly, the bill went out and it cost us 61 pounds. There was nothing written besides the total number we need to pay. Even they took the service charge out, it was 58 for the total bill. We did not also enjoy the food, the wonton is ok but beef tribes, fried wonton and fish ball soup were too salty to eat. Even the manager there was not be able to solve anything and he apologized us with an impolite and joking attitude. Ridiculous place with terrible service and bad food! One last tip: Even when you're super hungry, don't just rush in this restaurant. I believe you can find plenty other places which are worth to try. read more

Okay, when it's 4am, you're starving after dancing for the past 7 hours and craving a sit down greasy meal, Old Town 97 get's a 5 out of 5. It's always busy but the waiting time isn't too long - 15 mins or so at the busiest of times. The service is fast and the meals are huge. However, when you have it sober and fully energised, the food is only about a 3.5 out of 5. (I gave it a 4 to round up because I appreciate them so much for opening so late when I'm the most hungriest) There are much better Chinese food out of there but this place is good if you don't want anything special. Compounded by the fact that my friends boba was really watery and my stir fried vegetables were tasteless, I can't say I'd recommend this place for anything other than desperate drunchies. This is the regular student hangout for most of my friends from a nearby university. They are there so often they even have a fried rice named after their university. Just walk in, and order a plate of "LSE fried rice". It's OK, the waiter won't look at you funny, they know exactly what that means. Tried a plate myself and it's absolutely divine. LSE fried rice is basically black pepper chicken with fried egg and fried rice with runny egg all over. It's. Amaaaaaazing. There's another variation where you replace black pepper chicken with salted egg chicken. Both are great, but I prefer the black pepper chicken one more. Beware though, the servings might be a bit big for the typical Asian female appetite, so if you are one, you might want to order one to share among two. I have no complaints here the many times I've been here. Besides the LSE fried rice, the laksa noodles is something quite delicious as well. However, the intensity of the laksa (a little too much coconut milk) might be a bit too much for those with a blander taste-buds. Love the variety of drinks as well - the ambience here is quite nice and relaxing that you can order a glass of yummy ice lemon tea and chat here for hours till late (they close at what, 4.30am?). Overall, love it here - great place to have a meal, stay and chat with a couple of friends - there are always seats aplenty so you don't have to wait for a seat or get chased out either! I'm not sure how helpful this review is going to be. 2 things that i got out of my experience was that it was open late night and the food was pretty solid. Big portion for the price too. I have no idea what I had, i just pointed at something that was being served at another table. it had rice and some sort of sauce similar to a stroganoff and some portuguese sausage in it. Amazing. Not even necessarly the food but the fact that the London Chinatown has spots open as late as 5am. Counter to NYC Chinatown hours, the London Chinatown opens late and stays open late. I had a hard time finding breakfast in this spot but saw no shortage of options when it came to late-night grub.
