During the day, it's a hip hangout with plenty of craft beers and a limited menu of bar food. At night, it's a whole different experience. You can expect a dance floor with limited seating. I accidentally stumbled upon the second floor--a modest arcade with a vending machine, which was the perfect place to chill out. It really did feel like a social club up here since I met people from all across Arizona and beyond. What a gem--it's good to know you can have fun late at night around here.

Because of its seedy past, I had avoided this place for 15 years. And then the Sorry Gulch became the Horned Toad and cleaned up its act. I finally stopped by yesterday afternoon, a Friday, when I read the reviews here mentioning craft beer on tap. I had to check this out. I was pleasantly surprised. Yes, the dark lighting reminds you that you are in a bar, but there are now various sections within the space for a variety of happenings: dancing, listening to live music, shooting pool, sitting on couches by a fire place, sitting at tables with friends, or sitting at the bar. Seats and tables are spread apart to comply with the 6' distancing. I sat at the bar with my friend and had a variety of Arizona craft beers. It was an off hour and quiet enough for conversation without yelling. I'm sure this place can get loud and crowded late on a Friday or Saturday night. Happy Hours are 3-6pm every day when the tap beers are $5 and there are IPAs, blondes, pale ales, stouts to choose from. The beers are constantly changing. I had a beer brat for $5 to stave off my hunger and got to talk to the friendly managers, Miles and Debbie, who both were very attentive to my friend and me. The outdoor patio is also dog friendly as long as the dog is nice, is leashed, and refrains from drinking alcohol. I will be back!

We ordered the sampler which came with artichokes wrapped in bacon, dates and red peppers stuffed with cream cheese. I could have eaten like five more samplers because they were that good. For dinner, I order the Penne pasta with spicy sausage. My husband ordered the lamb meatballs, which came with couscous and chickpeas in a very mild curry sauce, which was perfect even for me. I don't need lamb and I'm not big on curry and I thought his dish was delicious. We had the creme brule for dessert and that was great as well. For drinks I ordered a Matador Rose (tequila, rose, tamarind and grapefruitz) and hubby had the Excalibur (Bourbon, blackberry, bitters). Both of us have traveled extensively, eaten at many excellent restaurants around the world, and this was genuinely one of the better meals we've had. As we sat down, we watched the bartender be pretty dismissive toward another group at the bar, so we were already a little unsure. We started talking about the decor because we liked the eclectic vibe. We jokingly pointed out that one of the pictures had a joint instead of a cigarette because someone in our group hadn't noticed. One of the bartender's first comments back, completely seriously, was, "I'm from San Diego. Have you never seen art before?" Honestly... what? It was such a weird, unnecessarily condescending response. I brushed it off at first as awkward banter, but it was a really strange first impression. The drinks were decent. The Loverlist was really good, and the Unicorn Fluff and Old Fashioned were fine. The bartender was quick to talk up their whiskey selection, but when we asked for a recommendation, she mostly gave reasons why she couldn't recommend anything and just kept saying they had "over 90 different options." Without a whiskey menu to look through, that wasn't especially helpful. We also asked for a shooter and were offered half of a cocktail instead. That would've been totally fine on its own, but combined with everything else, the service just never felt welcoming. We ended up leaving pretty quickly. I'd give the place another shot because the atmosphere is fun and has a lot of potential, but hopefully with a different bartender behind the bar.

They have a pretty extensive selection of anything you can think of to drink which is nice on a hot day. Friendly bartender, Jell-O shots, any kinda shots and sitting in a historical town after a long drive made this a great first stop!
