My son bought a box which includes 5 cigars, the CAO Outpost Volume two, for my birthday. It was factory sealed with what I believe it's called the shrink wrap. When I opened it, it had 4 cigars, and 1 was missing. The Italia one. I don't know if someone from the factory took it before wrapping it, or at the Sterling VA store. I called the store with the intention to let them know, and start an investigation, but the guy who answered the phone told me they don't sell those 5 cigar's boxes just to shut me down. I'd like to know from any cigar lover if you had a similar situation. Also, I'd like to have an explanation from Old Virginia in Sterling. read more

The selection is awesome and staff is great. They have a comfortable smoking lounge usually with sports on the TV. The only thing missing is alcohol but you can't having everything. Highly recommended! read more

So this was my go to place for cigars while in town. Their selection was unbeatable and if they didn't have it they would call another location. Today, this 4-5 star place gets a 2. Selection was very disappointing. First off, the guy that came into the humidor didn't ask me if I needed help, but just came in and stared at me as I stared right back. I told him that normally I would have a tray filled, but was frankly disappointed in the selection. My favorite LFDs, Tabernacles and Fuentes were no where to be found. When I asked about Fuentes, he said that there is at least twelve Fuentes varieties and the other worker went in with me. The reason I couldn't find them was there was mostly empty boxes and maybe four cigars. At least that guy apologized for the lack of cigars. The other guy said he knew they were low, but he didn't lie that they normally had that amount! Then I found out that their club points clear every year and the lowest points you can use is 250! While I support local cigar shops when I can, this business is driving you to the internet as they selection and customer service is better. read more

I found the staff knowledgeable and very friendly while explaining the types of cigars that met my preferences. They certainly made me feel comfortable as I asked questions and they edumacated me. The lounge was clean, comfortable and relaxing. The only downside is that the Sterling location doesn't serve beer nor wine and can't allow patrons to bring their own. read more

The guys here are pretty swell fellows, and I haven't experienced any of the rudeness others have. However, the cigar selection is a weird mixture of very high-brow and very low-brow cigars. They have some great stuff, but they're pretty expensive compared to other cigar shops, and the humidor is small. I wish they would carry Javas. Overall, I prefer the tobacco shop at the corner of Route 7 and International Drive in Tysons or John B Hayes in the Fair Oaks Mall, but I live walking distance to OVTC so they'll probably be my quick fix source. read more

I prefer the Manassas store. This location is truly hit or miss depending on who's "working" that day. Sometimes friendly counter staff, sometimes confused and angry counter staff. Also hate, hate, hate the way they ALWAYS follow me into the humidor and watch me like a hawk. I purchase quite a bit from them, I am in their database, I occasionally smoke there....why do they act like I'm going to shop lift or something? It's maddening! As for the "lounge" it's average for what's around the area. Not bad and cleaner then some I've smoked in. As for the selection, well....this is why I go there. I have been a customer of OVTC for years. I found them when Dulles Town Center first opened and I would go there at least once a week. In fact, I bought my first real humidor from them. When they moved to their current location I would go every chance I'd get, and today I'm back to once a week. I did try mail order cigars for a time, but the quality was always a bit iffy. Sure I'm paying a bit more, but part of the cigar world is the camaraderie which I never got from the Internet. Plus there is the fact that I have never ever got a bad stick from OVTC. I can look at the cigars before I buy, I can browse and find hidden gems, and all of that. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. I look forward to seeing guys like Skip, who has been a part of the store for longer than I've been going there. Frankly, I can't imagine going anywhere else. It's a great store that fits perfectly with the kinds of cigars I like to have, have a good selection of quality accoutrements, and the staff knows cigars. They are a perfect example of how a shop like this should be run and they have me as a customer for as long as they'll have me. read more

They are in the neighborhood so for years I would occasionally stop by for a cigar or imported cigarettes for house guests. They are always profoundly rude and their cigar knowledge is what their distributor tells them. Also, for some reason they tend to shadow customers in the humidor. It's just a bit odd. This is a newer OTVC shop. The shop is very spacious, but oddly the humidour is very small. There is all of this space in the shop, but most of it is just empty standing space. It seems they could have laid this shop out better. The selection in the humidor is decent, but I feel like it could be bigger. The staff at the shop is friendly and conversational. They were not push at all, but rather let us just look around and offered idle friendly conversation while we browsed. The lounge in the back was rather undecorated and just looked like a simple room with some unimpressive chairs to sit in and smoke cigars. I am writing this from my girlfriend's yelp account as I've never written an online review for anything in my life but felt compelled to do so after my visit here. I live about two miles away from the cigar shop at Reston town center so this was out of my way. Let me just say that I will be going here from now on albeit the added travel time. The staff was extremely knowledgable and friendly. None of that pretentious arrogance that I've dealt with at the town center. Small place, but just nothing great about it. Went to get some gift cards, and guy (older) running the register kept telling me my card was declined. Hung around for the young guy to show up (45 minutes late) who put me through no problems. Old guy didn't know how to work the register. On a positive note, I received 3 free cigars for my troubles. This is a review of the service at OVTC and nothing else. I was greeted pleasantly after walking through the door, but it went downhill when I asked if they carried Djarum clove cigarettes. They are apparently part of the flavored cigarette smoking ban our government has seen fit to enact (don't get me started on that bull shit); a fact I was not aware of. I was informed, in a rather curt manner, they were part of the ban and were therefore illegal to sell. I asked for clarification on the law and the gentlemen turns his back and starts walking to the other side of the counter mid-conversation. He answered me, but it was fairly dismissive and I had a hard time understanding what he was saying. It was clear our conversation was over, whether I liked it or not. Really dude? I was just asking about a sentimental favorite from my college days and clearly wasn't up on all the pertinent laws. It wasn't like I was asking if you carried bongs or if I could do lines off your daughter's ass. Lighten up a little. I get the impression the staff are only nice to you if you fit within their boundaries of what a cigar shop patron should be. I am a cigar smoker, albeit infrequently, and I can't say the experience has me aching to return. read more

I've shopped at this place a number of times over the last few years, even back when they were in the mall. The main reason I shop with them, above everything else, is location. They have always been the closest cigar shop to where I lived or worked. Their selection is good enough that I can usually find something I am satisfied with. But it fluctuates a lot. I might find something I love one month, and come back a couple months later and it's not there at all. Meanwhile, other shops seem to have it consistently in stock. I smoke the mid-range stuff, like Rocky and CAO, but not the Davidoffs and Ashtons, nor do I smoke the low-end crap. That seems to be the range that's most in flux. I agree with other reviewers that other shops in the area (though they are farther for me and/or involve driving in more irritating traffic) might have better selection or better prices. I also agree that the shop is laid out poorly. So much empty space, and the smoking area is in the back where you can't see anything or be seen. I wish the smoking area looked out onto the sidewalk so you could have a bit of the cafe attitude. Smoke and watch folks go by. So you could do better, but you can definitely do worse. read more

This store has an excellent variety in the humidor, not just the usual fare from General Cigar. The humidor is extremely well maintained and the cigars always taste fresh. On top of the selection, the staff is knowledgeable and friendly. Brandon and Skip are great associates to deal with. The lounge has hand-me-down furniture from the Redskins lounge in Loudon county and the chairs are very comfortable leather. What sets this shop apart is the unique combination of wine with the cigars. Alan is a trained somallier and one of the few people on the Eastern seaboard who has been schooled in pairing wine with cigars. He sets up free wine tastings in the shop and has no end of knowledge he's willing to hand out. I've been to a diverse array of cigar stores in Virginia, Maryland, DC, Florida, Tennessee, Texas, and North Carolina. This one is my gold standard, not because of the cigar selection and pricing, but because the staff goes just a bit further to make the whole experience unique. read more

The customer service was terrible and pretty offensive. I went with two friends and we went straight into the humidor. Within a minute, John C was in there to help, which was fine. However, he kept mentioning how there are cameras watching, so we better not steal anything. We all look young for being 28-30 years old, but we felt like we were being watched like a hawk all while he made inappropriate jokes about roughing up his wife/my fiancé roughing up me. They were definitely jokes, but made us extremely uncomfortable. When it came to selecting the cigars, I told John some of my taste preferences since I've only had a handful of cigars and am still figuring out what I like. I told him I like Irish whiskey, dry medium bodied wines, and dry martinis (essentially, don't give me anything sweet). He asked if I like infused flavors and I definitively said no. As if I said "yes, my personal food pyramid is entirely candy," he immediately took me to the "Toast" and "Plum" infused cigars. Coincidentally, I had already had Toast before because a friend bought it for me as a "dessert cigar," so I already knew how sweet it was. This indicated that John in no way listened to what I said and assumed solely by looking at me that I'd want something sweet. He handed me the plum cigar after I told him I had Toast and said how sweet it was, and said, "you're something huh?" And I said, "what do you mean, forthcoming?" And he said, "I was going to say 'ditsy,'" a word that has never been used to describe me and a word that someone should probably not use to describe a customer. To say the least, I put the plum cigar away and just picked something out on my own since I figured he would have given me something weak and sweet regardless of anything I told him about my taste preferences. When we went to pay, he made another joke about getting my fiancé's signature on the receipt as liability in case we stole. I'll give this place two stars for the cigar selection (but again, I'm a newbie so what do I know), but never will I go here again as a result of my experience with John C. Terrible customer service, flawlessly presumptuous, and a true lack of effort to listen to customer preferences. P.S., I literally created a Yelp account just to write this review. read more

You know, it does not cost anything to sit in their cigar lounge, enjoy a fine stogie and relax - whether your watching TV, reading, talking w/ others in the room or just checking your Droid...and all this for free! The only thing the guys at the Old VA Tobacco Co ask is that you purchase your cigar from them if you're going to smoke it there. And, as the few other places around that offer a cigar lounge want to charge you a $$$ membership fee, asking that you buy your stogie from them is something I am happy to comply to. Would highly recommend - small shop feel...that means personal, accommodating, well stocked and high service oriented. I am clearly not a connoisseur but enjoy cigars on occasion. On my first visit, an employee spent 20 minutes profiling my taste - type of preferred coffee,bourbon chocolate - and educating me on the strength,taste, etc., of cigars. Ultimately, recommending several - including several very inexpensive. It wasnt about a sale, it was about building a long term customer relationship. Went to the shop the other day and I have been a loyal customer to this particular location for the last 4 months since I have moved to the Sterling area. I always grab a drink from the 7-11 next door (not a bottle of JD or six pack) just a gatorade. The manager knows I've been coming here consistently and buying cigars as well as referring friends here. I grab my cigar and I'm ready to pay at the counter and he tells me rudely "this is the last time you will bring in a drink that I don't sell." I told him you don't have anything I like! He tells me "I'm licensed to sell drinks, so pick a coke or water." Kiss my ass old man (he's the one that has grey hair- the manager) What an idiot, he just lost a loyal customer and many others just over a $1,50 drink! This dude needs to learn about customer service. So I pay for my cigar and I'm pissed by now ( I should of just left and not bought a cigar) He cuts my cigar and I head to the smoking lounge, yeah like the other person said before- customers can't smoke in the main area! BS As soon as I sit down, I decide to leave and take my cigar home to smoke. He just looks at me and say's "you're leaving?" I should o said Yes Asshole and it's the last time I'm coming here, but I just said Yep and didn't look back. I will never go back there again. There selection is average at best and very pricey!! This store used to be in the mall and I must say I do not think the staff is very friendly or helpful. On one visit, I was treated as if I was going to steal something and was told to leave my bag outside the humidor (even though it was a small jewelry bag which contained a ring for my wife, and a cigar would CLEARLY not fit in it without poking out the top.) On another visit I was given shameful looks because I asked if they carried the Alec Bradley MAXX cigar which I happen to like very much. Obviously the sales person did not like these cigars and looked at me as if I asked for Swisher Sweets or something. I didn't think the selection was all that great either. I stopped by right after they opened and have really tried to go back a couple of times since then to see if they got any better or hired some new friendly faces but they did not. Most of the employees are pretentious and judging by their attitude towards most customers, they think they are better than you, and you are wasting their time. I would go somewhere else, probably some of the worst customer service I have ever had. read more

I've been here a couple times and each time I easily spend $50 or more. Each time I go in I feel like I'm intruding on the employee at the register, and its always the same gentleman. So I go in to the humidor, pick out my cigars, and when I go to checkout the guy always to have contempt in his actions. I came here once with a friend of mine who is new to cigars but who lived nearby to pick up a couple of sticks. We walked into the humidor where one of the men staffing the place was running through a long-winded explanation about misconceptions regarding the strength of cigars. I picked out a cigar for my friend and turned to pick out a different cigar for myself when suddenly the man explaining cigars to the young customer started bawling both me and my friend out. Apparently, my friend had committed the cardinal cigar sin of smelling the cigar. I will grant that his argument that putting a cigar up to your nose may be less than completely sanitary and turn other customers off was not completely unreasonable. However, the cigar was wrapped in cellophane and my friend was a newbie. Rather than take the time to calmly present his argument to my friend, he fairly flew off the handle to take both of us to task (though I didn't smell the cigar) for this misdeed. As a result of this, my friend has been soured on this store and perhaps the cigar buying experience. I will only go to this store again reluctantly, but I live far enough away to never to have to deal with the crotchety toad in this store again should I so choose. The selection in this store is okay, but a bit limited. It has a fair number of brands (e.g., Oliva, Montechristo, Camacho, etc), but not a great variety within those brands. For example, I was looking for a nice Churchill-sized maduro and ended up grabbing the only one I could find (an Ashton). The place also sells a small selection of pipes and pipe tobacco. There is a small selection of smokeless tobacco and wine, but I didn't take the time to check that out. A few assorted accessories are at the counter including the usual offerings from Xikar and S.T. DuPont. Prices weren't great, but the store is pretty much the only option if you're out that way. The lounge in the back is somewhat spare looking with one television mounted on the wall. The space is walled-in and somewhat claustrophobic in spite of the fairly spartan furnishings within. I felt a bit weirded out just checking it out. Parking is fairly typical suburban Virginia. I went on a Friday evening and the strip mall where this store is located was full of people doing the family dinner thing but my friend and I found a spot with minimal circling. read more

I purchased two pair of Apple earbuds at $20 apiece. Try to return them five days later and the store says I can't return them I need to call a phone number. So I called the phone number and The gentleman on the other and tells me I cannot return the product. They told me I had returned an item and that was my first warning so therefore I can't return anything for a year. I will not do business with that store like this. OVTC Sterling has been my go-to stop for cigars and pipes for a couple of years. Their prices are great and they are very knowledgeable. They have a really good selection of pipe tobaccos, including aromatics. If you like English pipe tobacco you will especially like their selection. From time to time they have pipe specials.
