I've experienced nothing but constant appearance-based discrimination at Total Wine. I own a successful construction company and am constantly dismissed when asking for help and eyed-down by the managers at the booth when walking in, and even some cashiers. Nicholas/Nick was particularly rude. He nearly barked at me to go to another lane when he saw that I had a "create-your-own-six-pack" of beer that he presumably thought was too tedious to have to individually scan. There was no cashier at the other "open" register and I told him that, but he rudely insisted that the register was, in fact, open, but that there was just no one there to assist me! What helpful pedantry, Nicholas! Bravo! I don't dress particularly poorly or wear dirty clothes, either: usually nice jeans and a hoodie or a flannel. I never look like I'm fresh off of a job site. Basically, no different than anyone else running errands at Target or HomeGoods, next door. At any rate, I've shopped here periodically over the last twelve years or so, and it's clear that if you don't dress like a milquetoast there to buy a case of wine (nothing against wine, but you know exactly the sort of moneyed-looking stereotype I'm talking about) they dismiss you, ignore you, watch you as if you're going to shoplift as you walk the aisles or argue with you if you ask a question that betrays the fact that you're not a total wine snob (pun intended). Once, I had the gall to ask where the vermouth was about a year ago, and the sales associate snobbishly told me that it was "over near the reds, where we always keep it, OBVIOUSLY!" in an incredibly condescending tone. That said, some of the cashiers (red polos) are perfectly nice, but a lot of the white-shirts (managers and/or sales associates, I suppose) are the ones who are quite snobby and dismissive. The disconcerting thing is that if you look back through the reviews of this location and others in the area, there's a consistent stream of negative reviews complaining about similar appearance-based discrimination and mistreatment. They clearly are trained to seek out and help people who look a certain way, who are inclined to spend more money on wine, and not beer. In essence, if you don't look like you have both the money and inclination to purchase a few cases of vintage Bourdeaux, don't bother attempting to shop there, or God forbid, ask for help finding something or getting rung up. I guess I've just bought my last six-pack from "Total & Complete Snobbery & More!". Seems like they don't want beer money and have a dress code to enter their incredibly classy suburban strip mall taupe-colored "wine boutique" with all the ambience of a small ethnic corner grocery, anyways. I certainly wouldn't judge anyone if I slung booze in such surroundings, especially if I was doing it while wearing a cheap white dress shirt a size too large and a chunky dad tie, either. read more

The Total website is useless. I just wanted to find out if they carried a particular beer, but the website wouldn't allow me to do that unless I gave them a whole lote of personal information: "This website stores cookies on your browser to collect certain information about you, your preferences, or your device, and to analyze the collected data and provide you a more secure and personalized experience. We also share information regarding your use of our website with our social media, advertising, and analytics partners." Since Total would be sharing my personal information with my having little control over who received it, I declined. I now am doing business with a competitor. read more

They stock an incredible selection nobody wants. Seriously, wine and beer, tons of stuff that never moves until they drop it so low the homeless guys can buy it for less than a bottle of mouthwash. Anything of significance - they don't have it. Don't believe me? Find a wine or craft beer you like (local or large craft), go there and try to get it - guarantee you they won't have it. They may make noises about ordering it for you, but it will never quite work out -- they'll just make some noises about ordering, then try to steer you to something else. Lately, they don't even do that. They can't even get wines that Total Wine stores in other states have - they can't even to a B2B transfer. Or they're unwilling. Clerks are polite - but they aren't trained. Don't know anything about what they do stock, recommendations are lame - asking if they carry something -- gotta go look it up on the computer (no store familiarity at all), and/or they direct you to the totally incorrect location. However, with October around the corner, if you want tons of Pumpkin spice beer and wine (?!) - they'll have you covered. I'm not much of a fruity beer guy, and I'm not much into pumpkin spice anything, except pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving. Ask for a nice robust Red or Barbarossa - blank stare/lame redirect. Seriously for Forgeron Red - blank stare. Asked for any good robust red blend to pair with a good steak - the guy actually pointed to a moscato and asked if that "will do it." I'm not even a wine snob but even I know what moscato is, and it pairs with steak about as well as toothpaste and orange juice. Store layout is kind of lame -- no real sense or sensibility to it, and the signs don't always indicate correctly what's on the shelf below. For now... I may just use the online ordering to look for what I will settle for, then go pick it up. Browsing or asking while in store is just depressing. read more

We had a consultation/tasting with Nick to select wines for our son's wedding. Nick was super flexible when we had to change our scheduled time at the last minute. When we finally got there he, and everyone else that works there, was super friendly and made the experience super enjoyable. He asked the right questions to determine what we wanted and spent well over an hour with us. He explained in great detail, and in a way we could understand, the characteristics of each wine and made sure our selections would pair well with the meals being served. Several other employees jumped in to help when it was time to fill our rather large order and helped us load everything in our vehicle. I HIGHLY recommend Total Wine and Nick if you are planning a huge celebration. He will take great care of you and make your party a success!!! read more

Its been at least 5 years since I've been to total wine, not sure why I think mainly because I was buying wine at other places. Unwilling to make the trek to TJ's since I need to run errands in Sterling anyways I decided to come in and see what they had. The selection of wine is massive, to the point of being overwhelming if you are not sure of what you want. Granted the staff is very friendly there were nice folks around who asked if I needed help, one employee even explained the lay out of the store (I'd outline it but I don't remember). They have higher priced wines, they have stuff for the under 10 buck chuck crowd, and yes for those of you who love the cheap wine at TJ's they even have 4 buck chuck. They have lots of beer here too although I'm not a huge beer person so I completely by-passed that area. Overall a good experience, got a good haul of different wines and didn't bust the budget either so a win win. Also they had wine tastings in the store I decided to not partake because I'd swallow the wine and not spit it out most likely. read more

Came here to shop and was not impressed with dasher Ashley. She first demanded that we take all the wine out of the cart and place it on the belt. Since we had over $200 in wine would it have inconvenienced her to take from the cart and box like the next cashier had done. Two, I ask for her help with the phone app to show coupons and she acted like she could not have been bothered. I found her to be abrupt and unprofessional. Wine, beer, champagne, cigars. A shoppers paradise when it comes to getting those alcoholic spirits and beverages. Huge selection of wines and beer and they all have notes by employees on the taste profiles and what they can be paired with, especially wines. For someone like myself who loves drinking but lacks knowledge about the product, this is a huge help. I'm addition, they also have a cigar display section to purchase some fine stogies to go with your beverages. Plus they have tools for the products such as wine keys, pourers, etc. Super friendly staff who loves what they do (how could you not) and now they are open earlier and close later. Total wine is like a big toy store for adults. Since covid started, you can now do all of your shopping online, both wine and beer, and they will bring it right to your car and place it in the trunk. All you have to do is click on the link in the email and tell them which one of the designated curbside pickup spaces you parked in. If you sign up on their website for an account, you can accumulate points which will provide discounts off future purchases, in addition to the standard 10-15% off coupons they have. These 10-15% off coupons are usually only good on winery direct wines which is ok since that includes top wines in all price ranges. If you live in VA, I believe they will even deliver or ship the wine to you but unfortunately this is not the case if you live in Maryland. I find that the wine tastes better if you stay away from having it shipped anyway. Although it is nice to support local wine/beer stores instead of the larger chains, total wine has both a great selection and customer service. read more

I was picking up items for a Doordash client and asked two different employees for assistance both Caucasian (their names were Christian and Nicolas). Christian started to help me initially until another Hispanic lady client approached him and he said that he was going to help her real quickly and then help me! This I thought was highly disappointing but I didn't think it was discriminatory at first. So I went on to search the items on my own. As luck would have it (or so I thought at the time) I found another employee named Nicolas and asked him for assistance to help me find the items. So he proceeds to explain to me how to find the items and which aisles they were etc. again this was highly disturbing as he really did not say sure let me help you and from there actually show me where the items were. I thought to myself heck of a customer service this place has!!!!!!! What I witnessed next absolutely was appalling, both employees Christian and Nicolas came over to the aisle I was at helping the Hispanic lady customer together and none of them even so much as offered to help me as they can see I needed help!!!!!!! I know I am a black woman and pretty sure that I'm not invisible as I talked to them both previously. I could have made a pretty big scene but that will not help with stopping them from their ignorance and racism. They need to be trained on how to deal with folks from all walks of life! Did an online pick up! Quick and easy, I was in and out very fast! The girl at the checkout was very helpful, meanwhile as I was browsing the store you can tell most employees, including a manager I passed by when entering the store, pick and choose who they assist, or even greet for that matter. Basically, the older you are the more serious they seem to take you as a customer. Hence why I only do online pickups! read more

This is where I always buy a case of Blue Moon beer. I'm in this store every few months or so, and each time I stop in, I pick 4 individual bottles of beer so I can try something different. Tonight, in addition to my case, I bought a Guinness in the bottle, a seasonal (Spring) Blue Moon, and a chicory Dogfish. I appreciate the varieties of wine they carry and the assortment of beers. I wish they carried hard liquor, but that's not their fault. It sorta reminds me of my favorite wine / spirits store of ALL TIME: Hi-Time Cellars in Costa Mesa, CA. Liquor seems to be higher priced in VA than it is in CA, which is why I go clink-clink-clinking from the duty free in San Juan all the way home. The price of my case of Blue Moon is better at Total Wine than in other locations, and I find their 6 packs of beer can be competitively priced, as well. The store offers wine tastings and the staff seems pretty good in making a suggestion when you are looking for something different. read more

This Total wine is way more compact than it's Fairfax and Springfield sisters stores, but seems to have a fairly good selection of stuff. The Staff was friendly enough and there is ample parking. I imagine this is a good place to stock up on beer or wine, better than a grocery store, for sure, but if you want something harder to find you will probably want one of the bigger stores. The aisles are pretty tight though, so if you need a cart, be prepared to do an awkward tango going by staff and other browsing patrons. read more

I hate this place. Why? Because I always walk in there for one thing and end up leaving with a case of beer and a half dozen 750 ml bottles of specialty brew. Their selection is massive and despite being a frequenter visitor, I never seem short of new options to try. They are the closest thing to a legal drug dealer... at least in Virginia, where we haven't legalized medical marijuana. I never buy wine here, if that means anything. I thoroughly enjoy wine, but I'm lucky enough to have found a couple good Virginia wineries I really like and buy direct from them. Total Wine's selection seems impressive, but no idea about their prices. The staff are pleasant and eager to help. This is a pretty big Total Wine. They have a really big selection of products. A few things that are disappointing are I find it to be a bit of a sloppy layout( my opinion). And I dont get the service I hope for when I'm there. I frequented the Manassas store and the folks there are super friendly, knowledgable and make a point to approach everyone and ask of they need help. This store you have to search for people and sometimes you can't find an employee on the sales floor. read more

This is a small Total Wine, but always fairly neat and tidy. Staff is helpful, but I've never gotten the super-friendly vibe I do at some other TW&Ms. Biggest issue is layout: The registers are literally right next to a single exit, so you (and the cashiers) are blasted by cold air (in winter) every time the door opens and closes while you're waiting in line. It's awful. The poor cashiers are wearing coats and gloves to do their jobs. Are you kidding? I'm uncomfortable for a few minutes in line, but the poor checkers are uncomfortable for a shift. It's tacky and can't help improve employee attitudes. read more

Word to the wise: Don't visit this store that one day a year when they're taking inventory. I was lucky enough to pop in for my yearly re-stock visit and the place was chaos.....people on top of the shelves, counting beer and wine bottles; rolling stepladders; yelling; breaking bottles. Every aisle at one point had a bunch of broken bottles. Management didn't seem to care, and everyone working there acted as if they were hopped up on cocaine. I was Sterling and saw this location was new so I decided to check it out. Compared to my Total Wine & More in Fairfax I didn't like the set up. I felt it was kind of crowded inside which isn't good when you want to take in the alcohol buying experience. I was also disappointed they were out of Game of Throne beer that i wanted to try and of course I was told my location in fairfax was the only one in the area that had it. We needed a Keg of Miller Lite and lo and behold...they had one! So in our last minute scramble to ensure we had enough beer for our wedding guests we gave them a call to see what they had. Prices were VERY reasonable for a keg, it was a $119 or so. We opted for the tap and the ice bucket because the caterer was going to take their gear with them and we wanted to have the keg available for some all night drinking. Easy to work with over the phone and no issues in picking up and returning the keg. One thing I learned for sure...1 keg was WAY too much for 70 person party....next time we will go with a Pony. read more

I know my way around most wines, and printed out my shopping list from the TW website. I'm a Boomer-aged woman, and sometimes need assistance making my selection. I noticed that when a man was in the same aisle as I, the staff asked him FIRST if he needed help. Then, the male staff turned to leave, and I had to say something to get some help. I bought 4 bottles; when I checked out, I noticed that MEN were asked in two instances, if they wanted a box for their purchase, and the staff person went over to the bin, and selected one. Total Wine & More in Sterling is a huge, clean, well-organized warehouse boasting one of the areas most extensive selections of wines (numbering in the thousands) and similarly robust beer offerings. Navigating the well-stocked aisles is facilitated by a logical layout, adequate but not harsh lighting, and proper signage. My palate has evolved somewhat away from California and I was very pleased at the large proportion of international imports (comprising about 1/2 of the inventory) represented in spades throughout each section. There are wine notes posted on many varietals and blends with workable descriptions-- in other words they not only give a score, they also discuss the nose, body, mouthfeel and finish of the wine in terms that any average consumer would be able to understand and an oenophile would exploit for maximum pairing success. I like that the store offers wine tastings to educate their customers and introduce new flavors and treatments in existing and emergent wine growing regions. I was surprised that I enjoyed several wines I would never have found/purchased on my own like some of the whites from Austria. I had previously considered Austrian wines to be very young, non-cerebral, and reminiscent of iron fillings. Imagine my delight when just a touch of mineral graced a decently acidic white with apple fruit and a hint of floral! Not something I'd drink every day, but I'm supremely grateful to TW&M for the introduction. Pricing at TW&M is very reasonable. Sure you could pick up cheaper bottles at Costco Warehouse or Trader Joe's, but Total Wine's broad selection means you have a better chance at getting something that best suits your palate and pairs beautifully with what you're having for dinner. There are bargians to be had at every pricepoint, especially if you're willing to stretch your palate beyond the Big 6. The staff here seem knowledgeable and eager to assist and will regale you with tales of great bargains and positive pairing experiences for as long as you will let them. I never write reviews, but I am so disappointed with the customer service at this location in Sterling. I went in store to purchase three bottles of champagne. I only found two on shelf and asked an employee if there were anymore in stock. He looked on the computer and found that the store had six cases and sent an associate to help. Unfortunately the guy was unable to find the cases and was just wandering around the store. So I talked to another employee asking for a different bottle of champagne, which they did not carry. I mentioned to him that the other associate couldn't locate the champagne I'd originally wanted that they most definitely had in store and then asked him if he could help find it. He responded by saying, "If he can't find, he can't find it!". He was so dismissive and rude. Mind you, this is on Christmas Eve when people should be in helpful spirits. Never again!!!! read more

Best prices, really helpful staff, they will give you suggestions or let your fend for yourself. Used them for a wedding - important to remember that you can overbuy on the wine or champagne and return what you didn't open. Takes the worry out of choosing a quantity. Did have trouble with a tap once that they couldn't fix - but it was a weekend of graduation parties and all their inventory was out so kinda understandable. Hope they didn't send that tap out again! I used to think World Market and Trader Joes were the place for wine, I never shop WM any more for wine, and Trader Joes only rarely - this is closers and good choices in the everyday wine category. This location is pretty small. I was really disappointed with the selection and availability of several wines. It took an act of Congress to get some assistance and when I did, I told the guy I wanted to buy a case of something specific but they only had 3 bottles (you can't get a discount on mix and match). I suggested a different wine - they had 2 bottles in the whole store. It was the same deal with anything I wanted. I do like that they will give you 10% off the featured tasting wine. I have heard other locations have more selection and better in-stocks. I wouldn't make a special trip again. read more
