I took my white wool rug in for its first cleaning in 30 years. The owner was very professional, positive and polite. When I picked the rug up I was almost blinded by by its whiteness. I have been taking my rugs to Old World for years. After this last time, will never use them again. When I picked up my rug, Harold was clearly in a bad mood. He told me that there were stains on the rug that he could not remove that were from furniture being placed on the rug. I told him that was not possible because the rug sits in the middle of a room, completely exposed. I was getting my rug home in a car with a sunroof. I asked him to wrap the one end that would be sticking out of the sunroof in plastic to protect it on the drive home. He did wrap the rug. However, he put it in the car upside down, which I did not realize until I got home. The end that was secured was in the footwell. The end that was sticking out of the sunroof was not secured. After he went back into the shop, I realized I could not drive the car because of the angle of the rug in the car. I was double parked; cars were honking at me, got an angry motorist behind me to adjust the rug so I could drive and then left. There was an odor coming from the rug, a very chemical smell. I got on 101, and there was much noise from the top of the rug. A few miles into the drive, I realized the top of the rug was exposed. By this time, it was 2:30. They close at 3:00, so there was no way I could get back there to fix the situation. When I got home, and got help to take the rug out of the car, I realized Harold had put the secured wrapped end in the bottom of the front seat. The exposed end was dirty and damaged from the drive. Then, the worst part, is when I unrolled the rug onto the floor. Whatever smelly chemicals were used completely bleached out all the color in the rug. The rug no longer lays flat, it ripples. The rug is toast. A waste of $200 plus the 20% tip, (based on previous service). I paid in advance, hence the tip. Even though there were a few spots in the middle of the rug from people walking on it, it looked better BEFORE I brought it to them than it does now. It looks old, worn and faded. No longer usable. I highly recommend a visit to Old World Rugs in SLO. There is no pressure at all to buy and the prices are appropriate for the pieces they carry. We recently purchased a large area rug from this store, and we were very impressed with both the quality of the rug, and the store service. The owner brought the rug to our house, and laid it out with our furniture so that we could see how it would look. We were delighted with the rug, and agreed to buy it. The store owner took it back to make some changes to the fringes. The rug was delivered permanently a couple of days later, and the installation was very professional; they even brought a vacuum cleaner to pick up the loose lint. I had Chinese Peking rug family heirloom (circa 1880) severely damaged in a chimney fire in my home. The rug was soaked with water damage, smoke damage and had a hole in it from the firefighters - this was my grandmothers rug and I was devastated to have to call this rug a "loss" with my insurance. I decided to take it to Old World Rugs to see if there was ANYTHING they could do for me and they worked WONDERS. I honestly couldn't believe how beautiful the rug came back to me. Last week, I visited Old World Rugs for the first time, and even though I didn't spend a dime, I am a customer for life! Before I went, I called the owner, Harold Lossing, to ask if I could bring in two oriental rugs that I inherited from my mother. I knew nothing about them and wanted to see if he could tell me anything about their history, quality and value. He said he would be happy to look at them, so I brought them down. There was no place to park in front of the store, so I had to park around the corner. The rugs were heavy, so I went in first to see if he was there and available. He left his store unattended to come out to my car and help me bring one of the rugs into the store to have a better look at it. He inspected the rug, gave me a little education on its history, age and style, and told me how to care for it. He told me what it would cost to have it cleaned (a service they offer at OWR), and even wrote up a little description of the rug, including a rough value, in case I decided to sell it. (He wasn't interested in buying it, but gave me some good suggestions.) It was obvious to me that Mr. Lossing loves what he does. His store is "no-frills," but well organized and definitely all about the rugs. He's not trying to be a "Jack of all Trades," or sell the public something they don't want or need, he just has a passion for what he sells. I will tell anyone who asks about this great store and businessperson, and if I am ever in the market for a new, old rug, this is where I will go. Well for years I have taken my white shag wool rug to Old World Rugs for cleaning. It always came back clean and fresh. This time however it came back with a big hole! The hole was not worn on the rug before I took it there. They even had the nerve to call me to tell me I must have put oxiclean on it because it corroded the wool. No I did not. Now the rug is ruined. As it already had one wear spot I am happy to give up this rug as it means I won't have to deal with such scrupulously dishonest people. I had a very good experience Old World Rugs from the first phone call. The receptionist was very knowledgeable about their services and she was able to schedule my area rug to be picked up and cleaned within two days. She also quoted the job with my description and was right on the money when they returned to back to me. The rug was too large for me to handle and so they offered to have it picked up . The two gentlemen that came were very efficient and the pickup was done in less than 15 min and into their van ( nice that it is covered and not in in a truck). They even helped move the furniture both in and out when they returned it back to me. They were also two days earlier than they quoted me and coordinated the return with me at my convenience. I would most certainly use them again and appreciate the good service that I received and the fair price for cleaning and delivery.
