No reason not to give this meal a five stars. The steak was cooked perfectly and very tasty. I didn't expect it, but I received some naan bread with the salad as well. One of my favorite places in Boston. Really cozy ambience and the staff (from the bartender, hosts, waitstaff, and even cooks) are so nice. Everything on the menu is great - the Rueben is fantastic, the soft pretzel with mustard and beer cheese dips, the Greek salad is phenomenal, fajitas, the Wurst plate, and their wings are incredible. Their monthly rotation menu varies by themes (Northern Italy, Duck, etc.) and I'm always impressed the chef is able to cook very different cuisine (i.e., Italian cicchetti) in a pub setting and it's excellent. One of the few places where everything on the menu is delicious, because typically I feel like most restaurants really excel at a handful of offerings on the menu and it's risky to stray. Even with COVID, we have been doing takeout and going here regularly. They've done an amazing job with social distancing - everyone is spread very far apart, PPE, etc. It's been tough with COVID and not as safe/fun to dine out, but we've continued coming here often because we feel incredibly safe and the staff has done a great job supporting social distancing and doing it in a kind way . read more

Came here with a Nift gift certificate. Food is solid. I ordered the Steak tips with a side of fries and onion ring. The onion rings were excellent! The steak tips were ok. I probably would not order them again. Burgers were good and the rotating specials will have me coming back for more. Friendly staff and sporty atmosphere. The volume isn't too bad so it's a nice place to grab a couple drink with friends and watch the game. Overall, I really enjoy my time here. I love this place on a normal day. But with recent situations I treated myself to curbside pickup. Burger was delicious and well cooked as usual. Bun was soggy, but that is what happens with take out. Pork buns were ok. Chicken fingers good as usual. Service was quick, easy, and safe. We came here on a Thursday night, and they had a fried chicken special! You get what is on the Thursday special menu -- fried chicken and 4 sides. I had 3 pieces of chicken with cornbread, jalapeño mac and cheese, potato salad, and buffalo Brussels sprouts as a substitute for buffalo cauliflower. The chicken was hot and fresh when it came out, and my favorite side was the mac and cheese. I wasn't able to finish all my food (a lot for 1 person!) but $16 for all of it seems reasonable. I've lived in the area for a few months now, so any time a nearby restaurant appears on Groupon, I seize the opportunity to try something close to home. So far, the Magoun Square establishments that have worked with Groupon have turned out to be quite phenomenal (see my review of Lil Vinny's Ristorante). Olde Magoun's Saloon is certainly no exception. My first visit came on a Monday night, which features $0.10 wings during football games. The place was packed, but Jeremy K and I were able to secure the last open table. Understandably so, service was on the slow side, but it didn't help that neither of us could decide on entrees from the rather expansive menu. After placing our beer orders, the waitstaff periodically checked in, but didn't seem impatient with our indecision. Once we'd ordered our entrees, we decided onion rings were necessary to tide us over, and they turned out to be quite good. The serving was generous, the batter crisp, and the greasiness kept to a minimum as best is possible. When our entrees arrived, I was immediately impressed with the portion size considering the price. I'd chosen the Au Poivre Over Salad burger, which featured a 10 oz burger, a generous topping of bleu cheese, and a substantial helping of mixed greens, all for $9.50. Unlike a recent encounter with an excessively-peppered steak, Olde Magoun's offering perfectly balanced the pepper and beef flavors, neither one overwhelming the other. Last night, I returned to Olde Magoun's for the second time and was as equally as impressed as I was after my first visit. A friend and I started with an order of wings, which were spicier than I expected, but not in a bad way. Spice notwithstanding, I have no complaints concerning the wings; on flavor alone, I can certainly understand why so many had packed into the place for Monday Night Football. For an entree this time, I ordered the North Carolina Pulled Pork sandwich and was, yet again, impressed with the quality and value of my selection. For $9.95, I received a generous helping of well-marinated and -prepared pork, topped with cole slaw and vinegar sauce, all on a sourdough roll. The pulled pork preparation was clearly in line with the intended style, and met my expectations for both flavor and balance with the accompanying items. Having so enjoyed the onion rings previously, I selected those as my side dish and they were every bit as good as the first time. Beyond food, Olde Magoun's excels where both beer and televisions are concerned. On top of their standard draft offerings, including Guinness, Stella Artois, and Harpoon IPA, they feature a regularly-updated and seasonally-influenced selection of bottles, currently focused around both Oktoberfest and pumpkin. The choices are all displayed on large chalkboard at the far end of the bar, visible from just about any seat in the restaurant (they're also listed on their website). For patrons interested in catching an ongoing sporting event, Olde Magoun's should immediately be considered. With five HD projectors paired with 9-foot screens, and a handful of smaller televisions over the bar, one can see any number of different games on a given evening. As is typical with many such arrangements, Olde Magoun's subscribes to DirecTV, so the choices are nearly endless. Given the quality of food, selection of beer, and abundance of televisions, it's no wonder Olde Magoun's Saloon is so consistently busy and has received such favorable ratings here on Yelp. But whoever it was deserves a beer for that gem of life wisdom. So the last time I wrote about this place (back when I lived stumbling distance up the hill), I commented on its transition from scary Whitey don't-go-in-theah bah to sorta kinda wannabe yuppie institution. But boy how things have changed. This place is on the craft beer pub map like the Acropolis. A stunning array of taps (oh, and get this - the glass your beer comes in is the actual glass for the beer...how cool is that? No Jack's Abby in a Bud Light glass here), pleasant and fun staff, and food, food, FOOD. No fru-fru gaaaahhstro charcuterRHEEE here, my friends - pub grub extraordinaire is on the menu. Burgers, sandwiches, fish and chips, chili, steak tips, they've got it all, cooked to perfection. But the thing here is the special theme events. Wednesday nites in October, yaaahhh! Oktoberfest! Bier! In big steins the size of the Berlin Wall. And schnitzel, sauerkraut, bratwurst, and the whole shebangwurst. Barbecue on Fourth of July weekend (for the Somerville fireworks), periodic tap takeovers, 25 cent wing nites, there's always something going on along that road to a man's heart (or woman's - just ask my sweetie, who likes to eat as much as me). Haven't been to their brunch, but it's on the calendar. It's a bit loud, but whaddya want, egg in your beer? It's a pub. Raise your glass high, and raise your voice higher. Transit and parking are kind of sparse, but it's doable. Watch out when (if?) that Green Line Extension goes in down the road - this place is gonna go crazy. So okay, I was a bit snarky last time I reviewed. That was a different lonely guy, who lived on a hill in Somerville's Last Rent Controlled Dive Apartment. It was before true love. A partner in gastronomic crime goes a long way towards appreciating a gem like this. All in all, this is a success story. Everything a pub was meant to be. If you live nearby or are searching the metropolis for the perfect hangout, it's definitely worth checking out, if you haven't yet. This place is one of my husband's favorite places for brunch and I totally get why - this place has delicious, generously portioned brunch that can either serve as a hangover cure or keep the party going the next morning or simply the most satisfying brunch. Atmosphere: This place is your typical pub with a European flair. They are always playing soccer games and clearly have a large soccer following. They have multiple TVs and large screen projectors all over. Plus lots of beer and sports related decor on the walls. Fun bar atmosphere overall. Service: service has always been great - never had a problem. Food: BEST FRENCH TOAST EVER!! I am a huge foodie and breakfast is my favorite - I have been to brunch all over the country - fancy to casual, (yes I am a self proclaimed brunch expert) and this is hands down the best French Toast I've ever had! They used to serve it with blueberry compote, now they serve it with apple compote and baileys infused whipped cream. Regardless it is still amazing. My husband had the breakfast burrito and it was delicious. His friend had the "muggah" breakfast sandwich with French fries - looked delicious. I tried the fries and they were good. Overall the food is fantastic. It might not be figure friendly, but it is well worth every bite! Drinks: They have a great bloody Mary menu with brunch. Their bloody Mary mix is spicy so my husband always orders the "wimpy" bloody: a bloody with an extra can of tomato juice - I love it. They also have a great beer list with beers from all over, and the servers seem very knowledgeable in regards to the beers. Cost: very reasonable - brunch and multiple (6+) beers/ (2) cocktails for 3 people was around $75 Parking: street - I could see it being an issue but we have never had a problem for weekend brunch. I love this bar. Delicious and unique food, fun crowd, good beer selection, and plenty of TV screens to watch the game. Olde Magoun's has me returning every other week to watch football on the weekends. The menu goes beyond the average pub food. You can get amazing comforting meals such as the Sunday Roasts, but you can also get something unique like the East meets West Burger (Kimchi, Korean BBQ glaze, and pickled ginger mayo). Sound good? You bet it is. As someone who always tries to get something different every time I visit a restaurant I have been compelled to order it twice already. It can be a bit messy, so the trick is to ask for extra napkins in advance. Every other thing I have tried has been great as well, including the beer. The items are not particularly cheap, but I think they are worth it. One of the reasons I love watching football here is because they play the games with the sound on and there are tons of TV screens. It can get packed, so if you are in a large group you might not be able to get a table unless you come early. Service has been fine. When it is busy you might have to wait a bit to have someone come check on you, but a little patience is all you need. Strongly recommended! read more

The food isn't what it used to be either. I used to be a regular because the quality was better but the quality and service has become comically bad. Came here for Oktoberfet and it was a 5 star experience, but I feel like I didn't really experience olde magouns so I'm taking one off for that. I'd 110% go back. $6 for tickets, same for beer and food. Great beer and pretzels. Over the years the menu followed the trend of featuring newer foods on theme nights. I haven't been the biggest fan of it but this is still my go-to spot for hangouts and family gatherings (I'm directly related to the Somerville Magoun's, though have no connection to this restaurant as far as I know). The atmosphere is typical Boston-sports pub ambiance but large enough to not feel bombarded with large and loud screens. The mac n' cheese with linguica is a classic and I've had dreams of it. I've also been a fan of the buffalo sauce mix they've used for wings and tenders but lately the haven't tasted the same. The fries are absolutely loaded with salt making them almost inedible. Magoun's will probably continue to thrive as the green line extension rolls through and I hope it stays for years to come. read more

Going to Olde Magoun's Saloon is like coming home to a cozy bar where everyone knows your name - even if they don't. Make sure to check the event calendar because they host a lot of different themed food/alcohol/etc. options. The inside stays relatively dark and homey and has a mix of different types of seats - my favorite are the high bar tables in the back. They have a shockingly large beer list here as well as traditional comfort food with a twist. They also regularly do specials (Wednesday night poutine nights were one of my favorites) and have a load of TVs for sports. This visit we tried their spinach artichoke dip Rangoon's (I like this better as a dip actually) and short rib poutine (SO MUCH MEAT - in a good way), as well as the short rib sandwich (whoops, more of the same meat). I love the onion rings here and the tons of varieties of Mac and cheese that seem to pop up. They also have a bunch of different brunch Benedict's to choose from if you go for brunch instead. read more

I hate to be the bearer of bad news as Olde Magoun's waitstaff was incredibly friendly. After I received a Nift gift card, I decided to check out Olde Magoun's because it was among the list of restaurants where I could use the Nift card. Everything was going smoothly until I saw a rat scurrying toward my table. I didn't want to make a commotion as there were customers seated nearby my table. However, seeing the rat as I was eating definitely made me lose my appetite. Luckily, I had eaten a significant portion of my food before I spotted the little critter. After the waitress came back with the check, I left a note about the rat. I do hope Magoun sorts out the hygiene issue as the staff was very welcoming. However, the day makes me wonder just how clean the kitchen is at this place. Needless to say, I'm glad I had a gift card and didn't have to pay the full amount for my meal. All in all, let's just say I won't be returning anytime soon. read more

I recommend the poutine, the curry fries, the Big Whiskey burger, and the Reuben My MAJOR con: Magoun's hold their own version of trivia on Tuesday nights. They have a large following and it generally fun. HOWEVER, groups collect points per drink they order (from a special list of beers.) This policy encourages drinking and puts a major disadvantage on smaller teams that drink less. This seems like a genuinely unsafe practice and turns me off entirely. I've been coming here for a few years now and this isn't about the food, which is usually very tasty. We got a takeout during this coronavirus pandemic; we've been eating in but maybe once every two weeks try a takeout for something different and the first time we got it from Olde Magoons the price was heftier than normal and they didn't give us a receipt like usual. The second time, the same again regarding price and I asked do you need me to sign and I was told " no. The gratuity is already added" and it clicked why it was so expensive as they were adding on at least 20%without telling us and us adding more on not knowing. I think that's really cheeky and unfair. People have been impacted and lost jobs and reduced salary. I'm lucky that I can afford this, but others may not, and that doesn't mean they should be hindered from buying food that they can pay for but maybe not afford 20% plus tip. It was really sly I felt. Edit: I'm editing this in response to the business owner's reply. Also, reminding readers that we have given a lot of custom to this establishment and it may not deter us from going back when this is all over! In the 2 times we have ordered, we were not told about the additional tip. Our orders were about 2-3 weeks apart. So, clearly they aren't telling everyone. I also take issue with suggesting that those in the restaurant business are worst affected. I'm not going to get into a debate about the pandemic but I think it's an insensitive thing to say when everyone is going through such tough times and most restaurant owners don't even pay their own staff but leave customers to do it through tips. read more

Beer selection is excellent and I heard they rotate - but I am happy what they have here in October. Best of all, beer is served in metric glasses: half liter and liter. Wonderful. Oktoberfest food was bona fide German. Although for the Paprikaschnitzel it seems that they have used Jägerschnitzelsoße sans mushrooms plus a little spice. That's what you often get in Germany too - mix-and-match sauces. Authenticity can be argued, but not really. One of my buddies had Rindergulasch mit Spätzle and I had a bite. I spent a good 2, 2 1/2 hours posted up at the bar here for various reasons, including "watching the Patriots game" and "needed to be close to Vernon Street Open Studios", so I got to know Magoun's a little better. The reuben with sauerkraut was as as tasty a sandwich as I've ever had, with good corned beef, light on the goopy Russian dressing, and with plenty of house made kraut. The obviously harried barmaid was giving it her all, and I didn't spend more than a few minutes with an empty drink. Caveat: if you're going to take advantage of their Sunday ticket, find out which game you want to watch, and plan your seating accordingly - the bar is not necessarily the best bet for watching, as the games are on projection screens and TVs all around the room. Armed with a Groupon in one hand, and with the company of a friend, I proceeded to walk over to Olde Magoun's Saloon on a crisp Monday night. We arrived around 9:30PM and few seats were available. Walking in, the first thing we noticed is the screens our on right, and the bar on the left - Monday Night Football was - and the NLDS game as well. We carefully made our wa across the dining room to a small, empty table; the only one left vacant. Score! As we dodged the crowd and made our way over I couldn't help to notice how young the crowd was. Anywhere from 22 to 30 from what I saw. Some were wearing SBS and BSSC t-shirts, others Tufts apparel. I immediately felt really comfortable upon that sight. We glance at two menus. The traditional one that was brought to our table and their Oktober fest beer selection on the chalkboard. It featured all kinds of wonderful, German-inspired brews and each is served in giant glass steins. It's neat. We each ordered an entree, and in my case, it was the blackened chicken mac & cheese but after we saw a bunch of delicious looking onion rings being brought to other tables, we decided to add that to our order as well. The menu itself had all kinds of things. Dishes with some nice twists, like their chili which I will have to try next time. Everything looks very good and they even had an Oktoberfest menu that they served on Wednesday nights and which features everything from schnitzel to hot potato salad, sausages of all sorts, and various other items to get your Oktoberfest on. The mac and cheese was great; the blackened chicken ever better! The o-rings were great and our drinks were great. The service was a tad slow at times but they were packed. Overall it was a great experience here and I had to kick myself a few times on the walk home, in shame for not having gone there sooner since I'm only a short walk away and have been here for almost six months now. This is definitely going to become my go-to sports bar/pub in the area I think. Keep in mind that they also offer 10 cent wings on Monday nights and they also have trivia on Tuesdays. read more
