I had to sleep on this review for several nights. The bottom line is if you're craving Mexican food - don't go here. Small spot. Classic Mexican trinkets line the walls. It was completely empty at 6pm on a Friday. We entered and no one greeted us. Ever. We sat ourselves until someone sauntered out. The older man who appears to be running the place is a character. I truly felt like I had walked onto the set of a play. This man either doesn't care in any way about the success of the business or his customers // or truly doesn't understand what his role is. He refused to give us what we ordered multiple times. If we wanted beef he would say No, it's not good. He wouldn't serve us chips saying our kid will choke. He wouldn't give us a dish we ordered telling us it's too much food. Simply talking to him was quite a challenge and caused tension. We gave up and just ordered anything. Side note - it's a no alcohol establishment. No license. When we asked if they had beer he mocked us - "Ohhh you NEED alcohol?" There's no other way to put it, the food is below mediocre. It's bad. It's flavourless, small, basically a bunch of mush. It's pretty clear things are premade and just heated or microwaved as enchiladas came out in about five minutes. Overall, the place was quite dirty. Sticky floors. And down right rude and uncomfortable. Such a disappointment. They need to get a proper server in place to elevate the experience and invest $$ in lot proper food. At the very least, clean the floors and remember - the customer is always right. *Check your receipt* I have been wanting to try this place and finally did. It opens from 12pm to 9pm. Food was decent, very homely. Cute and a bit kitschy decor. I had the tortilla soup and enchilada. The soup was tasty, tasted like something your grandmother would make. Color was pale, not what I expected. The enchilada was filling. Green sauce for mild and red sauce for spicy. It was ok, nothing mind blowing. Everything was good until the bill came. They did not ask if we want to pay separate and we did not ask for the bill. It came after we said we did not want dessert, which was fine. The restaurant was quite empty. Only 1 other table besides ours was taken. So we were not taking up precious space. So we went to the counter and asked to spilt the bill. The owner felt put upon and sighed and dithered a lot. I asked if it was possible, he said yes but seemed uncertain what to do. He took out his phone to calculate, not done on the till. My friend paid first. Then he deducted that amount from the original bill. It was different from what I had calculated myself so I asked to see the bill. I noticed the GST amount was wrong and told him. He was like whatever, no surprise or apologies. He keyed in my order separately into the till and printed out that receipt. It was still wrong and I told him. Again he was like but the till receipt showed as that. I calculated it on my phone for him to see. There was a difference. Turned out the tax charged was 7% GST, not the current 5% GST. Again he was unapologetic and I could tell he was not happy. He charged me the correct amount grudgingly. I paid and turned to walk out, but decided to ask for the receipt so I can share on Yelp to warn others. Not sure how long his till has been using 7% GST (which was the old GST from so many years ago). Is it an offense to overcharge the GST? Not sure what the owner thought I wanted the receipt for but he asked me to go back to him and he wrote the amount he charged me on the back of it. Anyway, just check your receipt always. This is my 4th experience with being overcharged, usually at mom and pop restaurants and especially if they take cash. But this is the first time I actually noticed where the overcharge was and managed to get the correct amount. The other 3 times I only realized it after I paid and left. And I found out when I was calculating based on the prices on the menu (why I usually take picture of menu so I can refer to price and what I ate for when I write reviews) and it did not tally, and I had no receipts to verify. EDITED TO ADD: Found a similar situation for Walmart and the reply from CRA: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/chump-change-or-chump-customers-b-c-woman-steamed-over-walmart-s-wrongful-gst-charge-1.5270394 "A spokeswoman for the CRA said there is no penalty for a company that collects GST in error." Last Friday, I picked up my grandchildren at 5:30pm. I wanted to bring them somewhere to eat for dinner. I was tired and wanted to go to a restaurant nearby. I checked reviews for this restsurant. A couple of comments raved about this restaurant so I looked forward to eating there. My favorite mexican food restaurant is Taqueria Playa Tropical. I've been going there for years. So, because a few people posted how great the food was, I expected it to be the same quality as Taqueria Playa Tropical (TPT). An older man (the owner) approached us. We had already looked at menu. I ordered the chicken flautas. My 8 years old granddaughter ordered the tacos. My 7 year old, who is very fussy, only wanted nachos with nothing on it. When I asked for "just the nachos", he looked at me like I was stupid. He said "what do you mean? There are toppings on the nachos" So I asked to put the toppings on the side. He looked at me like i had the gall to make such a request. I repeated what I wanted and he still sneered  "ok I will ask my son if he can do that". He brings out nachos covered in cheese and a side of salsa. The salsa was very tasty. But we didn't ask for the cheese on it.  At TPT, they provide, just nachos with nothing on it. With no fuss. Next, my granddaughter and I got our meals.  My flautas were big too crispy/chewy and the chicken tasted off. It looked like chicken mashed in some kind of tomatoe sauce with no spices. I couldn't eat it. It tasted disgusting to me. My granddaughter's tacos were rolled up and fried with only beef inside. I had a bite and it tasted like they dumped a lot of black pepper on it.  I have never liked black pepper, so I knew that's what it was. My granddaughter said she couldn't eat it because there was way too much pepper. It was NOT a taco. Also, she spit out her salad.  I had no idea what it tasted like, and I was not about to taste it. So I tell the older lady (the wife?) that we couldn't eat it and I wasn't going to pay for it, except for 3 pop and the cheese nachos. She said don't worry about it. She looked like she was embarrassed about the horrible food. The cheese nachos was the only thing that tasted good. Even though we didn't ask for cheese on it. She did not pass the message on to her husband so he rang up $39.  I told him I wasn't going to pay for it. Except for the nachos and pop. I told him we couldn't eat it because of how bad it tasted. (I wasn't going to take a chance by ordering something else) He said I have to pay for it. I told him that I don't have to if we can't eat it. He said "who says". OMG. SO I try to find that information from restaurant regulations, policies or wherever.  The only one I found was from the UK. So, I showed him. For the purpose that what I  had been implemented. He replied "says what law in Canada?" So Ithen I start searching on my phone. My grandchildren are got restless and started running around. I, of course, told them to sit still. After about 20 minutes, the guy comes out towards me and yells "OK JUST GO. AND YOU ARE SUPPOSEDTO PAY WHEN YOU ORDER SOMETHING, blah bla blah. AND YOU HAD POP" I was going to tell him that his wife told me I didn't have to pay for the pop or nachos,  but at that point I was just exhausted from the heat in the restaurant.  They didn'teven have a fan. I will NEVER go back to that restaurant.  And I will never recommend it. Not onky because of the food but because of his outrageous behavior of him yelling at me in front of my grandkids. They were scared that he was yelling at me and shocked because I taught them, that in our culture, woman are to be treated with respect taught. As are elders. Food is delicious. It's a small cozy and homey mom and pop shop. I have been many times and will continue to come by as a regular customer.

You might miss this tiny little Mexican joint whilst driving up 12th Avenue but be sure not to drive by without giving this place a try. We came in during the afternoon so it was quite empty, but the staff were extremely polite and courteous and seated us immediately. Me and my mother both ordered the enchiladas, the presentation was lovely, and the food was excellently authentic. I had just returned from a trip to Mexico and so I was missing it, this place instantly transported me back there. I was driving by and I saw Mexican restaurant... I am a Mexican food junkie so I had to stop. I looked at the Yelp review, three stars, but went in anyway. The whole experience started off rather poorly with extremely gruff service from what I would guess was the owner. Anyway she's the older lady that does the cooking. I am trying to cut down on carbs so I ordered the avocado salad with chicken. Unfortunately they were less than careful about washing their lettuce, my salad had dirt in it. My daughter's burrito was quite delicious however. Quite a shame really, the avocado was beautifully ripe and the tomato was also delicious, had they taken the time to wash the lettuce it would have been good. read more

We went here for lunch as it was close and had 4.4 stars on Google reviews. I was expecting something amazing as I already had loved the other mexican restaurants in new west. Was shocked to discover my meal that I thought was chopped steak, as it was lumpy , was in reality some unknown cut of meat that shrunk up into a tough topography landscape of shoe leather. Brought the leftovers home for my dog and she had a rough time eating it. I truly wanted the experience that others had eating at this establishment. "Oh... like Mexico." "Truly authentic food." "A taste of home." I was truly disappointed, it wasnt a taste of anything I was hoping for. Not expecting fancy. Or a beautiful layout. Just a delicious homestyle fair. It wasnt here. Tried this place for lunch , we were the only souls in the place at peak lunch time which was a red flag. Ordered chips and salsa to start, 6.95 for the smallest container of salsa. You get two spicy salsas and chips complimentary at Playa Taqueria, which is sooooo much better than the tiny portion of $$$ pico de gallo at Ole. Skip the chips/salsa. We ordered Chilli relleno and chimichanga. Chimi was bland but came with a beautiful salad. Too bad the feta on the salad was sour/off. Chille Relleno was bland too. We started with chips and guacamole. The guacamole is made in-house. It was fresh with lots of cilantro. I think the chips were also made in-house. My husband and both had enchiladas - Mole and Suizas. So good. Delicious. The mole had a bit of a kick to it. The suizas was made with tomatillos. It was fresh and lemony. There was a small portion of black beans. The beans were flavourful and had a smoky bacon flavour. Though it was a small portion, it was quite rich and a bigger portion would have been too much. This is long over due. I don't think I have a one star review, but sad to say this place deserves it. I hate wasting food so I shoveled as much as I could down...basically deconstructing the Chimichunga and eating things I thought were edible. He's the run down: 1. Chimichunga was not deep fired. It was grilled and came with no sauce. I asked for red sauce (Hot salsa) and got tomato sauce. Their hot sauce had some curry flavored paste... WTF! 2. I heard a microwave, then my food came out. I'm 99% sure my chicken was nuked. 3. rice was dry and tasted old 4. Asian man behind the grill (maybe in Los Angeles, but not in Vancouver)... Hmm, ok. I don't know what's up with all the multiple star reviews, were they drugged before entering this place? I think it has to be the lack of knowledge of what real Mexican food is in Vancouver. BTW, real Mexican food is not what you ate while on Vacation in Cancun either. Authentic Mexican food in New West. Who'da thunk? This is more of a 'Carne Asada Plate' affair, although they do have tacos and burritos as well. I have only went once but I want to try the whole menu. Like another reviewer said, I just told the dude to bring me food, and I got a plate with steak, rice, beans, salada, guacamole and an enchilada for a little over ten bucks. The decor is sparse and there's no liquor license, but this hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurant serves up filling portions of tacos, nachos, tamales and burritos on homemade corn or flour tortillas. I tried the taco combo, which included chorizo, beef and chicken tacos wrapped in soft corn tortillas and topped with fresh guacamole, plus rice and refried beans, for about $12. Everything was fresh and tasted homemade - though there seemed to be something missing in the chile department. Nothing was terribly spicy, though the meat was tender and nicely seasoned. The refried beans were a little sweet for my liking - and the Mexi-rice seemed a bit dry, suggesting microwaving? But hello sugar! The fried banana with caramel sauce and ice cream that we had for dessert met my sugar requirement for about a week. Oh, so good. Maybe washing it down with the remains of a bottle of Jarritos lime soda wasn't the best idea. I was fairly buzzing at the end of the meal. And speaking of sweet, the owner is a courtly older Mexican gentleman who will sit you down, take your order, prepare the food and make sure you're happy. I had the "green mole" over chicken, and next time will ask for the mole (which was excellent) on the side, so I can skin the chicken thigh and leg--I hate chicken skin. I don't know what's been in the air lately but I've had the worst luck with finding a good restaurant in Vancouver besides Cactus Club on consistency. How this restaurant is still up and running beats me. I came here with the hubby to give this place a try..it was another giant fail. Microwave doors slamming open and shut was a reoccurring sound while we waited for our food as our view consisted of the restaurant's 1960's rusty leaky cooler with old looking cheese and meat sitting inside. The hubby and I already knew what we were in for but decided to wait it out just to prove us wrong. While waiting we were offered some stale tortilla chips and store bought salsa. I was ready to run out of the restaurant at this point, really. Our entrees were the chimichangas which smelled like a wet dog slathered with some oily greasy cheesy sort of topping. My husband got the burrito which had refried beans on the side that had a microwaved ring around the edges (when the corners of your food gets burnt from over microwaving). I saw this reviewed on the front page of Yelp on April 11th, therefore, I had to book mark it. Also I am obsessed with Mexican. The place is a bit of a hole in the wall. Easy to get to by taking the bus from 22nd station called "Braid." No hours of operation are listed on the outside, therefore, you're taking a bit of a gamble. The food was okay, even for a cheap hole in the wall establishment. It wasn't great but I am not ready to dismiss it just yet like the others. I came here later in the week with some friends even though they guy i am dating warned me earlier that this place has microwaved food. My friend wanted to come here so we did. read more

We had walked by this cute little hole-in-the-wall over the past few months wanting to try it and today we did. It is a tiny cafe, with the usual Mexican kitchy decore and looks to be family owned. My partner ordered a chimichanga and I had the 3 taco platter (pork,beef,chicken) with beans and rice. The food was, in a word, OK. My tacos were supposed to be a variety, but they looked and tasted all the same... and my rice was microwaved ( I heard the proverbial DING) it had dry clumps in it.. My partner enjoyed the chimichanga, but didn't rave about it. The fruity Mexican soda pop made the meal more authentic, as they don't have a liquor licence. I came with my dad on a business trip to Vancouver, Canada. We're from Los Angeles, California.The food was horrible! I ordered the chicken enchiladas with rice & beans. The enchiladas were overloaded in onion, the rice was salty, the beans had no flavor. Its was just disgusting. The worst part was hearing the asain guy push the time on the microwave. Nothing is freshly made. Don't waste your money here. I don't know how they got all those awards on the wall. Looks like the printed those at home. We just wanted to get out right away. It took forever for the older Mexican guy to figure out how to work the debit/credit machine. He then asked if we wanted to leave a tip on the card. I said, "no". One of the worst Mexican restaurants I have had the misfortune to visiting. I feel so strongly about this that I had to rewrite this review after a moderator at Yelp accused me fabricating my experience and not having visited the restaurant at all, which is totally bunk. First thing you will notice is the microwave. You can hear it and you can certainly taste it even though they tried to disguise it by putting a pound of salt in their food. I've been coming here for years on and off. The food is classic Mexican. I guess it depends on what you're looking for but I don't like burritos and tacos and the American version. I've never ordered off the menu. My routine is I go in and say make me dinner. The owner only asks if I'm hungry. The last dish I had was a well stewed beef and brown sauce with fried rice and refried beens. The meat was tender, the rice had a mix of onion and corn and the beans are home made with a nice smokey flavour. I always order a stack of corn tortillas and a side of his home made hot sauce which is the best I've ever tasted. The tortillas are home made as well. It has a great home made country feel to it. My girlfriend and I went her tonight. She ordered the tortilla soup, she thought it was okay. She also ordered the nacho's with chicken. I totally helped her eat them...they were delish!!! Normally when it comes to nachos i think I make the best....but these were darn good. I ordered the chimichanga. It's very different from what I've had in the past, not fried...that's a good thing. It was good, not at all what I expected. For desert we had the fried tortilla with ice cream and syrup. For sure I will be back, yes the server went outside to smoke while we were there. It doesn't matter to me, the way I see it people probably do far worse at much better places. So the meal for the two us was $31.00. Not bad at all. I took my family to Ole Ole Mexican Cuisine in New West last night. My wife is a picky eater and was worried about the food. When we arrived she started to panic because the restaurant is small and the building is old. The owner greeted us in a cheerful manner. The restaurant was small but on a Wednesday night it was full.(good indicator) We started with nacho and that was wonderful. They added homemade salsa, with their own spin. This was a good start to the evening. We had 7 in our group and decided to order different dishes. Everything we ordered was fantastic. The meals were like traditional meal with their own spin on the meals. This wasn't a cookie cutter meal like our Mexican restaurant. If you want home cook meal, Ole Ole is the place to go. We have just found our favorite Mexican Restaurant and we will be going here more frequently. This is a sit down restaurant. The price is fair, which was average $12 and good size meal. I love Ole Ole! It's a tiny little place filled with the warmth and friendliness of the owner who serves hearty authentic Mexican dishes at great prices. It's clearly a place loved by locals - tonight I noticed many of the customers knew the owner by name and he's got readers choice awards from The Record for 9 consecutive years. Everything on the menu sounded delicious and tonight I tried the Chicken Flautas. I was delighted with the crispy baked tortilla filled with tender spiced chicken, peppers and onions, which also came with a really tasty salad. I've previously had the Quesadillas and my dining companions have loved the Chilies Reyanos, and the Carnitas. I found it a little chilly but that may at least in part due to the incredibly cold weather and the chill made me choose the hot chocolate, which I can now highly recommend - there's just a little something different but I can't put my finger on it.
