This place was on my list for sooo long I finally got a chance to go and it did not disappoint!! I was really craving tacos and so I got their beef tacos from here which were delicious. Their tortilla soup was also soo good and flavourful. We got their choco mole for dessert, DECEDENT AND DELICIOUS!! it was soft and very chocolatey. Their drinks were also stellar. Aside from that, we didn't see the server for the rest of night. Drinks did not get refilled at all. The braised pork fared better than the braised beef sirloin. My table found the barbacoa quite dry and felt some sauce/ salsa would have helped. We ordered side avocado with the Cochinita Pibil but they placed it on the barbacoa instead which was a minor annoyance. The rice side left something to be desired as it was on the very dry side. I was expecting a lot of tacos for 15 for $39 but they were actually mini mini tacos. Which works out to $2.66 each which isn't really that great of a deal considering the size. I've only ever ordered the huarache here. I've had it several times, and while it tastes good, I don't like how it's served on a banana leaf (which gets cut up as you eat and you end up chewing on it and having to spit it out). I would like to try other items, but their menu is small and prices are expensive for what you get. The huarache for example is $25, and contains less food than a standard donair. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I get that Zapoteca is trying to come across as an upscale experience, but at the end of the day it's a Mexican restaurant in an old pub.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The meals they serve don't justify the cost - it's hard to justify $35-$65 for a small meal when there are a hundred other restaurants within 10 minutes of here. Why is the food so overpriced? Perhaps it has to do with the unnecessarily large number of staff, including a hostess who basically stands at the door bored because there are only about five tables full at any given time. There are several other random employees milling about but the Cove used to have a couple servers and a bartender even when the place was completely packed. Salary is the most expensive part of running a business and these costs must add substantially to the price of these dishes. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We so miss the Cove, which had occupied Thai space for decades prior to Zapoteca opening. We used to visit at least once a week for years and years. They had outstanding food at standard prices, and the space really is best suited for a pub and not the upscale Mexican type cuisine that Zapoteca is trying to serve.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Honestly I can't see this place lasting very long. read more

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Quiet on a Tuesday night, the place is quite spacious with lots of seating.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Service is great, our server was kind and seemed to love the food. We were there for their 15 taco for $40 deal. We had 5 of each meat, a tuna ceviche, added a fish taco, and the quesabirria. Ceviche was good, the ahi tuna was fresh and tasty, and the chips they were served with were perfect. The taco platter was good, with our favourite being the pollo taco. The fish tacos were also very good, with perfectly cooked fish. The quesabirria finished us off, and were so rich with flavour, I would have eaten another if I had room. Overall, such good value for the food that we had, and a great stop for Mexican food in this area. Will have to come back to eat more quesabirrias. read more

Came here for the first time tonight as a party of four without a reservation (which was recommended but not needed). Menu is a single letter sized card with beverages on the back and everything else on the front. I'm a simple gal who loves food pictures to help decide so that was hard as no images are provided (and other tempers haven't done that justice yet). Choose fish tacos mostly because I could say it but also because I had better clarity on what might be on the plate. Completely blanked on drink choice so I went with a corona beer then wished it were a madora (?) negro bottles beer cuz it had hints of chocolate and was wonderful (thanks hubby for letting me try your beer). I am convinced to find myself a good Mexican spot in Vancouver and Zapoteca's in Kits is definitely one of the better spots I've been to. Despite its lackluster exterior, the inside of the restaurant does the job of defining "don't judge a book by its cover". The staff were extremely friendly and attentive to our every need throughout our meal. Now, the most important part - the food. I was glad to see that their menu had classic Mexican specials. Extra pleased to see that they had mole on the menu too. We shared several appetizers which were all good - nothing really screamed special. Fish tacos and tuna ceviche were good. Unfortunately, the choriqueso could've definitely had a bit more attention. Although served warm, the cheese solidified way too quickly. Maybe service could've spaced the dishes out a bit more for a better experience. Nevertheless, still very pleased. We ordered the Del Mar option for the mains and boy was this a treat. Exploding with citrus and chile flavors, this for me, was the star of the meal. Will have to come back for their moles and red meat version of this entree. 3 of us came here just before 5 and was lucky to be at Happy Hour. They have happy hour daily 2-5pm. During HH, you get 3 tacos for 11 so we got three types to share plus a small nachos $11. We ordered Asada (grilled beef), barbacoa ( braised beef) and cochinita ( braised pork). All 3 were delicious. The nachos were also good as they use their own chips and special cheese and pickled onion. It wasn't the typical Tex mex nachos at every other restaurant. We used to go there when it first opened and we have been many times since. The food was authentic upper level Mexican when they started in Kits, but we went again last night and were really disappointed. Where it was once nice and spicy , it is now bland. I had the Huarache with Chorizo and was very disappointed. Maybe it was the night, I don't know, but it seems they have cooled the spice a lot on their offerings. This is the only serious Mexican restaurant in Vancouver. Some dishes, like the cevice and the mole steak are sophisticated but even our 10 year old insists we come here almost twice a month for the molcajetes (slow braised meat in a hot stone bowl). A great addition to the Mexican food offered in vancouver. Not Tex-Mex Mexican, but a big jump up. I have not seen their offerings in the other Kitsilano Mexican rassurants, and they are really superb. we have been back several times. The one dish I have tasted before is the beef Birria (It is called something else), and theirs is like the real family Birria. Huge portion. I also rave about the huacharte Chorizo. Very very good. Service is Mexican, which woks on the realism front. Definitely worth a trip to 4th and Alma. Used to be Jerry's Cove, so as another said the exterior isn't great, but once through the door, it is all Mexican. Enjoy read more
