    Fish tacos
    Brenda T.

Waiting time: 5/5 [[HIGHLIGHT]]Cleanliness: 4/5[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] ‍Service: 3/5 Taste: 3.5/5 Pricing: 3/5 Overall: Came here last minute on a Monday night for a birthday celebration for a group of 6 people. We made reservations but it was quite empty. It just so happened that it was all day happy hour on Monday so we ordered their tacos that were on their HH menu and some other dishes on their regular menu. The tacos were on the smaller size and nothing too special. If I were to go back for one dish it would be for the octopus and ceviche dish. However what didn't sit well with me was their $20 charge cause we had a cake..... I don't think I would come back here especially if it was almost an hour drive for us.

    Sides with the Cochinita Pibil

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Extremely spacious dining space with many large tables suitable for large groups.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Service was quite minimal. They sat us down, took our orders and brought them to us. Aside from that, we didn't see the server for the rest of night. Drinks did not get refilled at all. The braised pork fared better than the braised beef sirloin. My table found the barbacoa quite dry and felt some sauce/ salsa would have helped. We ordered side avocado with the Cochinita Pibil but they placed it on the barbacoa instead which was a minor annoyance. The rice side left something to be desired as it was on the very dry side. It tasted like leftover rice to us. All in all, food was satisfactory, albeit steep in price. For "traditional" and at that price point, I did expect more.

    15 mini tacos for $39

I was expecting a lot of tacos for 15 for $39 but they were actually mini mini tacos. Which works out to $2.66 each which isn't really that great of a deal considering the size. The Barbadoa was the tastiest. The pollo & chorizo were a little on the bland side. My favourite was actually the tortillas [[HIGHLIGHT]]Great location and ambience but I think the white rock location has more authentic flavour and vibes[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Zapo skillet has bland, flavorless mole.

I've only ever ordered the huarache here. I've had it several times, and while it tastes good, I don't like how it's served on a banana leaf (which gets cut up as you eat and you end up chewing on it and having to spit it out). I would like to try other items, but their menu is small and prices are expensive for what you get. The huarache for example is $25, and contains less food than a standard donair. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I get that Zapoteca is trying to come across as an upscale experience, but at the end of the day it's a Mexican restaurant in an old pub.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The meals they serve don't justify the cost - it's hard to justify $35-$65 for a small meal when there are a hundred other restaurants within 10 minutes of here. Why is the food so overpriced? Perhaps it has to do with the unnecessarily large number of staff, including a hostess who basically stands at the door bored because there are only about five tables full at any given time. There are several other random employees milling about but the Cove used to have a couple servers and a bartender even when the place was completely packed. Salary is the most expensive part of running a business and these costs must add substantially to the price of these dishes. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We so miss the Cove, which had occupied Thai space for decades prior to Zapoteca opening. We used to visit at least once a week for years and years. They had outstanding food at standard prices, and the space really is best suited for a pub and not the upscale Mexican type cuisine that Zapoteca is trying to serve.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Honestly I can't see this place lasting very long.

    Tuna ceviche

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Quiet on a Tuesday night, the place is quite spacious with lots of seating.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Service is great, our server was kind and seemed to love the food. We were there for their 15 taco for $40 deal. We had 5 of each meat, a tuna ceviche, added a fish taco, and the quesabirria. Ceviche was good, the ahi tuna was fresh and tasty, and the chips they were served with were perfect. The taco platter was good, with our favourite being the pollo taco. The fish tacos were also very good, with perfectly cooked fish. The quesabirria finished us off, and were so rich with flavour, I would have eaten another if I had room. Overall, such good value for the food that we had, and a great stop for Mexican food in this area. Will have to come back to eat more quesabirrias.

Sat us down, took our orders and brought us our food then quickly brought the bill so they could change tables over. The Margarita here was excellent. Definitely felt like a strong boozey drink. Well done! Tried their Chilaquiles - not sure what I was expecting but this was more nachos than anything else. Definitely not the best in the city either. Maiz De Cole - strangely the best option that I selected. The chilli, lamb, cilantro just went so well. Great light option if you need one. Definitely not better than a good Mexican street corn though. Birria Taco - wanted to like this but didn't leave much to be desired. Large portions of protein Ordered the extra Birria as my date also wanted this. Looking back, should have stuck with the single order. It was way too much birria protein which after a few bites became overly dry and lacked flavour. Carnitas Tacos - come in a order of 2. Better option for smaller appetites. Overall, felt a bit steep in price. Their website online doesn't even post prices yet.

Our server was attentive and around when we needed something but never interrupting, and his recommendations ended up being some of our favourite dishes. The anchovy olives were a standout, super crispy, packed with flavour, and not overly fishy at all (great if you're a bit hesitant about anchovies). The mushroom toast was rich, savoury, and full of umami. Just a heads up not to let it sit too long since it softens the bread. The tuna tartare was fresh and well-balanced. Not my personal favourite served on toast, but still really enjoyable overall. The paella was excellent, perfectly cooked shrimp, tclams, and crispy pork belly chicharrón that added the best salty, fatty crunch. The roasted cabbage completely surprised me and was easily one of the best veggie dishes I've had in a while. I could have eaten a whole plate of it. We wrapped things up with churros and shared a pitcher of sangria. For three people, it came out to about $68 each before tip, which felt very fair for how much we ordered. Would definitely recommend.

As well, the manchego was so tiny it was like a shaving . The bone marrow amounted to about three teaspoons of marrow. We were so sad and dissatisfied. The patatas bravas was okay. Unfortunately we do not have a reason to return.
