My friend brought me here to make a custom perfume to mark my time in NYC and it was such a fun experience! Loved the personal touches and attention to detail. First I chose a base, then the perfume mixologist helped create a bunch of different combos so I could rank them all and select a few favorites. From there, we did a few more combos for good measure then a blind test. Surprisingly, I ended up going with a combo that didn't use the original base I selected. So I was watching a show and it was set in France. A few of the folks went to make their own perfume and thought that's so cool! It just so happened my dear daughter is back for spring break and thought this would be a nice mommy daughter thing to do together and it was! Mattie was nice. I finally made it to Olfactory after being semi-obsessed with fragrances for a while (especially that elusive green tea scent I once found in a candle and haven't been able to track down since). Going in, I didn't expect to find the green tea scent of my dreams, and I was okay with that. Olfactory has preset options to choose from rather than full-on customization, which was fine, but I do prefer starting from scratch and building my fragrance step by step. Despite that, the experience was still really fun, so I'll give it 3.5 stars for the overall vibe. Most importantly, my sister had a great time and found the scent she was kind looking for (though she didn't had anything very specific in mind). I also walked away with a pretty decent fragrance that I'll probably wear every now and then, even if it's not the green tea scent I've been chasing. Had an incredible experience for our first time & it was all due to Chris Bracho! If you have the chance to create your scent with him- I would recommend waiting. Bracho is SO knowledgeable and for someone who doesn't wear any perfume, and has no idea about them, he was the best to help guide me to what I eventually chose for myself. I also loved how Bracho asked what we "didn't like" and if we're open to suggestions. We were surprised to find out that some of the scents, included things we thought we didn't like, were actually some of our favorites. He was great with his questions and was really funny. He had us engaged the entire time. My favorite part was when he would tell me a scent would smell like "orange wood" - it would ACTUALLY smell like what he would describe. It was so cool & if we lived in NYC I would bring more of my friends/family. Definitely will include this in our future itinerary any time we bring new friends/family to NYC! I had such a great experience! Thank you to Julian who made our time here so great :) We first got to smell all the base scents and pick our favorite. They have plaques on the walls that have details about the notes and what the scent pairs well with. After we chose our base scent, we got seated at the counter to start creating our custom perfume! I honestly don't think we would've had such a great time had it not been for Julian. He was super knowledgeable and friendly and just a fun guy to interact with. We talked with him about what kind of scents we usually prefer and he picked out a bunch of different accords to mix with our base scents. We then picked our favorites, and he put them on our skin to let us get the true scent experience. It was a very fun process and Julian was so great to work with. After choosing our final scent, we got to pick our a label color, bottle cap, and name our perfume. It was overall such a fun experience and I'm so excited to wear my custom perfume! I surprised my husband with a date at Olfactory NYC when we were staying in Brooklyn. By their advertising, I was expecting a guided experience that felt bespoke. However, it felt more cookie cutter. We were asked questions we didn't really know how to answer and the process overall felt gimmick-y. Maybe it's better suited for someone who already knows their scents and has that lingo rather than newbies who need to be educated? The scents in there are SO overpowering that it makes it hard to really see what you do or don't like about different combinations. Even with stepping outside, our noses just were completely burnt out. Ultimately, I do like the scent I ended up with, but I'm not sure it will become the 'signature' scent I was hoping for it to be. I will say that Zoe was awesome - she did a good job of answering questions and was fun to work with -- I think the issue is more the business model. read more

Good...it was a fun Girls activity I shared with 3 friends on My Birthday. Hint: If you find that your fragrance doesn't last, try purchasing the body wash and lotion and use to layer your scent. Bad...The website reorder process...not terribly user friendly. Also, I've ordered the custom body wash and lotion as birthday gifts for each of my girlfriends who participated in my birthday workshop. It doesn't take long to prepare but, parking is horrendous in the neighborhood and each time I came to pick up, my order was not ready. In addition to creating my own custom scent, I purchased the custom scent body wash and lotion for each of my girlfriends, but those purchases didn't count towards anything free or discounted for me. They've changed the bottle of the body wash. And a new bottle STILL doesn't have a place where they can put the name of your custom scent on it. AND...Now at a glance you can't tell whether you're picking up the body, wash or the lotion without stopping to read carefully. When I commented to the staff member that it wasn't a good change, her response was, "it wasn't my decision."...But see, That wasn't the point and definitely not a productive answer. PACKAGING MATTERS for functional/practical reasons. Something that could be communicated at the next staff meeting. But this snarky generation doesn't care about anything. Lastly, they have some OLFACTORY personalized pens on the service counter out in the open to be used by their customers. I had just spent $55 in their store in addition to the other $200, I've already spent prior. Would you believe the salesperson wouldn't let me have one? Saying that "customers keep taking them." To which I answered, "because they're sitting out in the open on your counter FOR CUSTOMER USE. Why can't a customer have one if they want?" Ugh! How CHEAP! But these are my experiences and observations. Like I said, it was a nice group activity, but the purchase incentives and customer service leave more to be desired. read more

Brought my girlfriend here the day after Valentines Day to make scents as a date. It was really fun. The staff was friendly and accomodating, They took their time and made sure to help us really create the best perfume or cologne we could. The ambiance and vibe is pretty awesome too. If I had one critique it would be that there was not enough representation among the perfume designers around which their base scents are created. Nothing really by or for people of color. But the moment we walked in the check in person, masc presenting shot car whiteish color cut, tattoos, seems to be a manager was not friendly. I waited a long time to come to olfactory, hyped this place up, posted about it just to be greeted literally immediately tip on arrival with an attitude. Maddie was great during this visit, hopefully I got her name right. She made the whole experience. She spoke respectfully, engaged us, and even shared her favorite scents. She got me to buy more than I wanted but I was so excited to open the boxes and smell my travel scents when I got home. However the experience for the customer begins the moment they see or think of going to olfactory. This means the greeter, the lab specialists, the cleanliness, the presentation... everything matters. I don't think that person should be at the door if they aren't going to be welcoming. My date mentioned it the entire weekend. Jokingly but no one should ever feel strange going into a business because someone doesn't treat them correctly. The worst part is I feel they were annoyed with us because we were smiling and laughing (maybe loudly), enjoying our first ever date. Which we will both remember now oddly because of this person. Took my wife on a date here on. Sunday afternoon and it was an incredible experience! Not only did we become OBSESSED with our unique scent creations, but Maddie was an incredible and genuine mixologist. We enjoyed the conversation, the level of comfort and just how much of an expert she was. She answered every question we had, explained to us in detail what every node was and she did really well at explaining the whys behind the steps of the process. We really enjoyed being able to build our scents, name them and enjoy them for future dates. It can seem a little pricey initially, but if you think of the cost of a high end perfume ($80-$300), $85 a bottle is really not a bad price. You can customize a full size bottle in store, name it and get it wrapped up, but if you'd like a travel size you would have to process the order online unfortunately. You can create the scent in store and they can put the nodes and base in the system for an easy online order for you to process at home, so that's a plus! You can also create your own lotion if you'd like a little extra something alongside your new perfume! I would absolutely do this again and recommend for others to do as well! What was meant to be a relaxing self-care day quickly turned into frustration. While strolling through Williamsburg, I passed by Olfactory, a place I'd seen frequently on Instagram, and decided to create my own scent. It was a quiet Tuesday, so I walked in, expecting a great experience. As you enter, the walls are lined with bottles of perfume. I took a look around and waited for assistance, but no one approached. Eventually, I had to ask about the process myself. I was simply told to smell the scents and pick one I liked, with no further guidance. At that moment, I couldn't help but think how different the experience might be if I were an influencer--perhaps I would've received more attention. I wanted to learn more about how to choose the right scent, but no one bothered to explain. After smelling several options on my own and still feeling lost, I gave up and left. Yesterday my girlfriend and I decided to visit Olfactory on a whim and are so grateful we got to work with Brianna because she made the experience so memorable. We learned so much about fragrance-making; she was so patient and didn't rush us whatsoever, and it's almost like she knew our scent palettes better than we did.
