Perched on top of Morro do Sarapião, 42 meters (137 feet) tall and 130 meters (459 feet) above sea…read morelevel, the Olinda Lighthouse was inaugurated on September 7, 1941. It's painted with black and white horizontal stripes. This is the second lighthouse built here--the first was constructed in 1872, but was always threatened by the advance of the sea, and by the 20thCentury was in a bad state of repair. While a small elevator with access to the lantern was installed, capable of transporting one person at a time (the first in a lighthouse in Brazil), it is not open to the public. It's still very pretty, both during the day and at night.

The Sacred Art Museum of Pernambuco is appropriately located inside a wonderful old building (built…read morein 1537) that served as the House of Representatives; in 1676, it became the palace of the 1st Bishop of the City of Olinda. This building and the surrounding area were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. The collection is made up of various religious art and artifacts dating from the 16th Century. Currently, they are only open from 2 PM until 5 PM every day except Monday when it is closed. The admission is only R$6, which is just a little more than $1 US, so it's worth it.
