Visited during their Christmas Event and O+J Salon definitely know how to throw a PARTY! Very impressed with the hospitality and the welcoming environment. Cute salon and a nice sized facility. Very open and with big windows. Very modern and stylish style. The salon was a packed house with all their new and regular clients. Came with a friend and was introduced to her stylist Jessica. She was very knowledgeable with hair and very open about her services and availability. Their Christmas party had food, drinks, and hair product samples. Raffle prizes with product purchases. Oliver + James were generous with this party, now we know why they throw great parties. It was a nice time meeting all the stylists and the owner. Link and Lou permanent jewelry were also at the party as a pop up event for them. It was so great to see another business supporting another business. Awesome marketing to get their business out there and to reach the Des Moines community. Definitely looking to go back as a hair client soon and buying their products! Update: the absolute nightmare of trying to work with the owner of this salon got worse. During our original call, she was resistant to giving me a refund because "they don't allow refunds" (that is disclosed nowhere on their website or in their salon, nor was it told to me before or during my service) but finally said she would be willing to give me one. I never received a refund and it seems I never will. I decided to contact the salon again and say I never received a refund and they told me they couldn't send a refund through card because it was already processed. I sent proof of bank statements showing that there was never a refund and suddenly they were willing to write a check on accord of the "honor system" despite me providing proof I never got my money back. They then requested I delete my photos and review before picking up my check because it was an "unfair" review. I never agreed to deleting anything and decided to try to pick up my check anyway. When I get there, the owner says to come back another day because she's demanding it's deleted. I tell her I'll delete it in the salon because I'm not driving 35 minutes one way to come back, so I delete it in person. The owner then made me wait over 40 minutes before eventually kicking me out of the salon and saying that she won't give me a refund after all, proving it was a deceitful attempt to get me to delete an honest review. Not only did she chastise me during my initial request for a refund, then in person when denying me my promised refund, she only got more rude and insulting. She was upset at me for having an issue with my experience saying how the stylist I saw was highly rated and reviewed and she messed up in no way. Then in person she said how the stylist was fired not even two months later. Fishy that I was berated for having an issue for such a good stylist who then had grounds for termination just weeks after. My bank also confirmed they never attempted to refund my card in the first place and the salon has since blocked me on platforms confirming their unprofessionalism and inability to work with the customers who were done wrong at their business. read more

Lauren is a miracle worker with my hair! After moving to the area and having an unfortunate curly cut, I needed some major change to help fix it. Lauren and I met for a (free) consultation and decided on a plan to cut and color my hair. I appreciated that she spoke up and even explained to me why a less expensive coloring process was better than a more complex (and expensive) option due to my curl pattern! My hair is the shortest it has ever been, but I have never felt more confident or comfortable than ever before. They use amazing products at this salon; I even ended up coming back to buy some because my curls just radiate with it (never during my appt did Lauren push products on me). Parking is on the street and metered; so overpay for the meters just in case you stay in the chair longer. Usually ample spaces on the block! This hive was buzzing on a Thursday afternoon. So many great things to say about this salon! Location: Fantastic (I mean they are located right next to Horizon Line Coffee) and easy meter street parking. Also right around the corner from the sculpture park. Salon: Vibrant and electric. From the moment you walk in the door you are greeted and feel welcomed. They specialize in balayage but since my service this time was a haircut only I will be reviewing that experience. Stylist: Lauren is amazing! I wish there was a better word I could come up with that encompasses her zeal and warmth that just radiate from her. She actually took a good ten minutes to talk about my hair, my expectations, and then gave advice and suggestions on her vision while accommodating any needs or concerns I had. So thank you Lauren and thank you O+j salon! For as long as I am in the DSM area this will be my salon! I highly recommend these girls and the work that they do. I'm obsessed with this salon. I searched through Yelp and came across Oliver and James, and as bad as it sounds solely booked my hair cut on the decor and style of the salon. I walked in and it's even more magical in person. My appointment was with Lauren and she is literally the cutest and sweetest woman I've ever let touch my hair. I had not had my hair cut/dyed in 2+ years due to a traumatic salon experience. We won't talk about that. It was all one length and so boring. She talked with me a bit and her recommendations for my hair were so spot on with my style and the look I envisioned in the head. I felt so comfortable to let her cut my hair. We talked and it didn't feel awkward at all. No expectation to talk to one another or that awkward silence that usually happens. Just real talking. Her cut on my hair was so great and even made me feel comfortable enough to dye it again, and that says a lot after the trauma I've been though lol. She made me feel so beautiful on my birthday and I will continue coming back to Oliver and James and choosing Lauren as long as I'm in the area. I went in with a good amount of natural growth (about 4. Inches) and wanting my previous blonde (from balayage) taken out/to match my natural color so that I could stop coloring my hair. I even came with a reference photo and emphasized that I didn't want my natural roots touched/the hair to not be darker than my roots. After a very brief consult my stylist came back and started in with all over color. I was a little surprised as I've never had my roots touched before and even asked to confirm that my roots wouldn't be darker than my natural color. She assured me it wouldn't. (I am used to previous stylists using toner so I assumed my roots wouldn't be impacted but I should have stopped her there). When it was all said and done, my entire head was a dark/blackish brown in permanent color that was several shades darker than my natural shade with no dimension. It is frustrating because it was the opposite of my long term hair goals to stop dyeing my hair and grow out my natural color. Now I am starting from zero. As soon as I saw my hair I voiced to my stylist it was too dark and she offered to add highlights or come back in a few days. I contacted the salon and they sent me multiple messages trying to get me to come back to have another stylist fix it but I felt uncomfortable going back. I instead asked for a refund and was told the owner would contact me because they normally don't offer refunds. Never received a call from the owner or got a refund. read more

Wow wow wow. Can't say enough good things about Oliver+James First, I was able to get in 45 minutes after calling for an appointment, so that was great. Second, the salon is the CUTEST. And they didn't stop there! I went in just needing a trim. Lauren evaluated my hair type, length, texture, and hair routine to give me the best results possible. She suggested a smoothing treatment that was on special for July. I trusted her opinion and decided to do it. The smoothing treatment has worked so well for my natural hair! The trim was just what I wanted, she removed all of the dead but still maintaining a good length. She styled it super cute, too! I've been to the salon twice. It is very cute and the receptionist is very nice. Alicia did my hair the first time and I liked it, though my new balayage was quite brassy at the roots. They were running a discount that month on new services, which I should've gotten since I was a new client, but didn't. I emailed later and was promised the discount at my next appointment (I didn't get it then, either!) The second time I was scheduled, I was placed with Lauren because of Alicia's pregnancy. When I showed up, Alicia was there doing someone else's hair!!! What?! I thought that was extremely strange, and frankly, quite rude! My hair cut and color were fine. I just wondered why Alecia would be in the salon doing someone else's hair when my appointment had been give to another stylist. Having been here several times, a bit disappointed. Some stylists charge a lot more than others for basically the same cut. One of the times, I was told there was an opening prior to an appointment I had made so I could come earlier. I confirmed and said I would. I arrived on the agreed time and ended up having to wait 30 minutes to be seen. Not the most organized. In particular, the woman behind the desk does not reliably answer the phone nor does she reliably return voicemails. They do a nice cut and good job of working around the masks.
