At J Michaels I have returned for high quality eye lash extensions from Cassie. Here I have no worries on the length, glue, eyelash quality, or time because Cassie is a top notch Eye Lash and Brow Technician who knows her craft and after having her attend to my lashes for over six years I have no worries as I settle into a private room and allow her to work her magic allowing me peace and comfort. Even though they are not experts in my type of hair the techniques I see them applying to the upscale customers are exquisite and chic many walk out looking like a half million dollars. I went in to J. Michael's and saw Chelsea. She was so attentive. I saw her for a consultation and a treatment on two separate occasions before my cut and color appointment to ensure the health and care of my hair, which I was so appreciative of. I cut off 5-6 inches of my hair and added dimensional highlights and color. This was a BIG change for me and she did exactly what I wanted according to our consult and my inspo pictures, while keeping realistic ideas since I started with a very dark base color. After receiving a haircut that did not meet my expectations, i.e.everything I asked for was ignored- I let J. Michaels know immediately, that I was dissatisfied. Obviously, they could not fix the haircut since it was much shorter than I had requested and the framing around my face was completely messed up. A refund was refused and I was promptly sent the refund policy, which states clearly if you're unsatisfied. too bad. Maybe this is standard in the industry, but I feel it is impertinent that others know you will not be listened to and you will not receive what you ask for. When I get my hair done, I tend to go for drastic changes. I present stylists with numerous challenges all at once: a cut (which I can never really describe very well), a bleaching / toning or two (I have naturally black hair), and a vivid tone over that (blue, purple, etc.). I always leave my expectations at the door because I know that I am asking a lot, this is an art, not a science, and something has to give. A good stylist knows this and will tread lightly, reminding their client in advance of all possible shortcomings, via additional processes needed, a heftier price tag, sacrifices to hair integrity, etc. I came in with a mousy brown lob. I wanted a shaggy, sultry mop, but not a soccer mom one, of black fading into dark purple fading into white purple. Sound difficult? It was! Sydney did her best but the results were super crappy, looked exactly zero like what I had requested, and we both knew it as we collaboratively cringed into the mirror together. We had already spent like six hours together and we both had to call it quits. To her credit, the look was not achieved on day 1 because Sydney did not want to fry my hair to a crisp with bleach. Good on her! However, I wanted that purple, so I gave her the full go-ahead the following day. There was no way I could have those purples unless we straight up cooked my hair. Miraculously, somehow, my hair remained healthy despite all the hell we gave it on day 2. Sydney totally nailed it. She requested second and third opinions from other colorists on site. She was a really good sport, a good time to be around, extra nice, great attitude, she really listened to what I wanted and was determined to get it right. The purple has long since faded out. However. I STILL get compliments on my hair all.the.time. Her dye / lift painting technique, whatever it is, is world class. It somehow seamlessly fades from black into whitish blonde, with no harsh lines whatsoever. THAT is not easy to do, and we all know that. Sydney did it though! Side note, she gave both of my little girls their very first haircuts ever! They loved her! I'll be back here soon! read more

I came to J Michaels after the hair dresser I had been going to for years damaged my hair to a point it had never been. I called numerous salons and finally came across J Michaels and they got me in the same day to fix and mend a bad situation. Kelly has been nothing short of an amazing hair stylist. I had previously had tape in extensions and after a consultation decided to go with the natural beaded row (NBR) method. These are AWESOME. They are so customizable for the color, they can tone, add darkness to them, put in drop roots and color melts. The hair is such great quality as well. I am able to do so many things with my hair to style as if I didn't have any extensions. I thought that going to a fancy salon, the stylists were the best. They are friendly but haven't gotten my hair how I showed them I wanted it. They suggested a balayage, because I wanted more sunkissed highlights. I have dark brown hair so I wanted something subtle. Instead the stylist said she would do foil highlights. Turned out brassy and not subtle at all. I knew it wasn't just my opinion that it looked bad, since I haven't received one single compliment on the color. I'm still trying to find a place that will fix this. The two stylists my mom and I have had, tug on your scalp so hard, it hurts. Not gentle at all. Not the relaxing treatment that I'm used to. BEWARE, when scheduling online, it won't give you the correct pricing. Once you get to the counter, the price you saw online is no where close to the price tag you'll end up paying. I have never written a review on Yelp, but save your money and go somewhere else. My stylist left the bleach on for too long, burning off my hair. The top layer of my hair is 2 inches long and sticks straight up. When I called to just let them know this had happened, they told me I could come in and get one treatment to help my hair grow faster. One additional star for the person who answered who was super apologetic and kind! However, when I awkwardly came back to the same stylist, she did not once apologize. 1 star for the fact that my hair still had split ends all throughout it after my haircut and the owner was unwilling to make it right or even apologize. Quick recap - I drove 2 hrs each way to the salon because I figured with the prices (very high for Iowa) that it would be a good cut. I asked the stylist just to trim my split ends and give me curtain bangs. She did the whole cut VERY fast, and it ended up being over $50 with tip. When I got home, I realized that she had missed split ends throughout my hair. I emailed Michelle (the owner) and I initially only asked for a partial refund and when she refused that, I said I would drive back down for a complimentary haircut in a couple months when I would have needed another trim anyways. She told me that I would need to drive all the way back to the salon within 1 week from my service (a 4 hr round trip drive for me) to have it fixed and that I would have to go to the same stylist who messed it up in the first place. I understand that salons have policies that they like to stick to, but you would think that customer service would come first and that you would be more flexible in allowing either a partial refund or for me to come down later when it is more convenient for me rather than asking me to drive all that way back for their mistake. I think it's pretty ridiculous to charge over $50 for a really quick, lazy haircut and then make me take a 4 hr trip to have it fixed only a week later because of your stylist's mistake. Not only that, but in all my emails with Michelle, she never once apologized or took responsibility for the bad haircut I got or for the inconvenience of expecting me to come all the way back to the salon and neither did Tina the manager despite having photo proof of their mistake. My lashes always look so amazing and last for the full 3 weeks. I found J. Michaels Salon about 2 years ago and I have been in love with this place ever since! I come here for all of my hair needs because I know they will do a good job. My go-to stylist is Kelly and I would recommend her especially if you want to do any color services. I have gone to her to get my balayage done about three times now and each time I walk out looking and feeling fabulous! Balayage starts at $92 here but sometimes they offer deals to loyalty point customers where you can get your hair cut and colored. The salon itself is very clean and luxurious and the staff here are extremely accommodating. If you need a glass of water or coffee, they will be there to bring you some refreshments. J. Michaels offers a lot of different services like make-up application, eyelash extensions, texture, and conditioning services. I have tried the Kerastase Fusio Dose Treatment and it really helped my hair gain back some lost moisture and shine. I appreciate the care and attention that the stylist give to each client. At some salons, I feel like the stylist are rushing through services but not here. They take the time to ensure that you get what you want and they also take the time to get to know their clients. I love walking in and they already know my name! My first complaint is that the prices on the website are not correct. Prices actually vary by stylist, which they do not explain to you until you've already finished and are at the counter paying. When I brought this up to the girls at the counter they were very rude and argued with me. My advice for anyone going here for the first time, call and check prices for your stylist before your appointment. My second complaint is my hair looks nothing like what I wanted. I made an appointment with Anita for a cut, color, and highlight. I told her exactly how I wanted my hair colored (almost black brown with subtle peekaboo highlights), and she just did her own thing (a light brown balayage, which I told her I did not want) and it looks nothing like what I asked for. She also cut off at least two inches after I told her to only take half inch. She seemed very bothered that I wanted a trim, even though that's why I was there. My hair doesn't look terrible, but it's not what I wanted and I still had to pay $200. Now I need to find somewhere else that can fix it and pay again for a job that should have been done the first time. Plus the next year of my life it's going to take to get the length back. I walked into this salon today with a head of disastrous hair. 2 weeks ago I had beaded weft extensions put in by a different salon. They were falling out, ripping my natural hair, and in a couple different spots...just hanging by a thread. The color didn't blend, and neither did my natural hair. J Michaels Salon took me in and worked on someone else's mistake for 5 hours!! Kelly was patient, kind, and genuinely cared about the money I'd already spent on extensions.
