I want to like this place, I really do (after all, I live down the street!). 1 1/2 stars. First time we went, we had good enough cocktails, they specialize in novelty cocktails, which I like, and they aren't overly pricey. However, the place was dead and the acoustics were still pretty awful. Not sure that I loved our male waiter, he seemed a little "too cool for school." Please note, this is Phinney Ridge, not Capitol Hill. Second time I went at 12:45pm on a Friday night, they were closing. It wasn't even 1am. Ok....? Third time I went, it was packed (it was St Patty's weekend) and the music was SO LOUD that I could NOT hear my friend, sitting across from the tiny table. The music got progressively louder, three more times that night. Again, the acoustics are already bad at this place, so when the bartender is bored and wants to blare music, it becomes not fun for the patrons. Bad acoustics to begin + really awful LOUD 90s rap = see you later, I'm outta here. Did I mention that our waitress, again, had kind of a crappy attitude?? Meh, I don't get it. I don't see myself going back here -- it's too bad, because I think it's a cute spot, and the cocktails seemed nice and thoughtfully made, but all the rest of it just really takes away from the fun. Oh, how I love the yuppification of Phinney Ridge--it's so cool to have tasty, fancy places within biking distance of home! Oliver's Twist is everything I want in a neighborhood spot. They have fantastic, inventive drinks (the "Artful Dodger" features Cynar, a sweetly bitter, oddly pleasing artichoke liqueur from Italy), they have delicious, entertaining snacks (truffled garlic popcorn! tomato cappuccino with cute grilled cheese sammich on the side!), and the interior is just luxe enough but still allows you to feel comfortable in jeans. The service is friendly and hip and prompt and good-natured. You can tell the servers all dig the place, too. And best of all, my aging hipster friends? It's a restaurant that *feels* like a bar (not unlike Chupacabra across the street), so you can bring your kiddos! I'm not gonna call it kid-friendly, but if you want cocktails and snacks without paying for a sitter, you can do it. The chef has a fancy pedigree, including Carmelita and the Dahlia Lounge, and it shows in the interesting but not absurd tidbits on the menu. Hurry up! Go check it out! The drinks are all delicious, and all the food I've tried is very yummy, too! I especially love the French 75, the duck-fat-fried potatoes, the sauteed kale, the non-alcoholic Blood Orange Fizz (because the cocktails pack a punch, and I really can't have more than one, if I'm driving). This place is cozy and romantic if it's not too crowded, but when it's crowded it's very loud. On warm days, they open up the front, so it's light and airy. The last time I was there was a dreary, wet and cold night, and Oliver's Twist was a sweet respite. read more

Scrumptious. Why has it taken me so long to try Oliver's Twist? Maybe it's because it looks tiny and packed when I walk past the window? Turns out it's got plenty of room inside. The menu is small but the choices are tight. We ordered almost everything (A. doesn't like anchovies, so we skipped the pizette, and who needs a salad on a night of tapas?) and were pleased with most. The fingerling potatoes with some sort of sauce - aoili - were soft and buttery. The bacon and blue cheese stuffed dates rocked, though I'm not sure about the tomato stuff they're served over. Warm bright green olives were bountiful, prosciutto on sinfully greasy toast was...sinful. The kale was kind of boring and a bit overly garlicky. The truffle popcorn was tasty but nothing out of this world (try Elemental for that). Grilled cheese was sharp but tomato "capuccino" was unexciting. Um. What am I forgetting? Chocolate gelato + peanutbutter sauce = heaven. S'mores sandwich, eh -- the bread is too bready, not sweet enough. I could possibly give it 5 starts based on the comfy couch in the front. I've been here 3 times now. The first wasn't so great - a busy Friday night, was standing at the bar for about 3 minutes without ever being greeted so I left. I understand you are busy, but at least make eye contact and say you'll be right with me. Just bad customer service. Fortuantely, that night I wasn't thinking of slitting my wrist, otherwise things could have gotten messy. The second and third time I was there it wasn't so busy and the waitress was spot on. The beer I had was superb, a dark belgian beer on tap. A "double" I think it was called? 2 times now I've had it, and apparently there will be a third time I ask what it is called the next time I go. I decided to give it another whirl based on a review a couple down, the chocolate gelato sounded pretty delish. Well, it WAS...it was definitely something I will get again and would highly recommend. The food selection is more or less finger foods. If you are looking for solid dinner, it's not the place to go. The place itself is nicely decorated with cool looking art on the wall. A bit trendy, but not full of pompous people, chill environment. And the couch in front....nice touch. Good spot for a first date, if you like them, you can slide on over, if not...eh, stay put on the other side. Plus, the door is right there if you need to make a quick getaway!!! I hear they have music on the weekend, so I definitely want to go back for some of that. After all that, I wonder why I didn't give it 5 stars? I guess the first experience. I wasn't super excited to make the pilgrimage all the way to Phinney Ridge from Capitol Hill, but some friends wanted to meet up so I gave in. To say I'm glad I did would be an understatement. For starters, parking was relatively easy to find, which was unexpected, although probably not THAT strange for Phinney Ridge. Graham's iPhone had given us some pretty bizarre directions, taking us up I-5, through Greenlake and Greenwood, as well as through some residential areas, but we did eventually make it. We were promptly offered drinks, and as we had arrived at the very end of happy hour, got $2 off. I had the Bullseye, which was a mix of about a billion different things, most notably tequila and ginger. It was giant and rather tasty, if sort of ginger-y. I believe Graham had the Sowerberry, which was good as well. Once Kaylan and fellow Yelper Sarah M. arrived, it was food time. The menu is made up of small plates so it's a good idea to get a few. I couldn't live without trying the tomato cappucino and grilled cheese dish, so I ordered that and a plate of olives. Graham ordered the roasted fingerling potatoes with duck fat and aioli and the kale. The potatoes were enjoyable; I don't like kale, so I have no opinion to offer there. My grilled cheese/tomato cappucino dish was fantastic. I didn't taste any of Kaylan's salad, but we did all share Sarah's garlic truffle popcorn. It was tasty and there was definitely enough for the four of us to share. We were stuffed after we finally finished all of our food, but we couldn't pass up dessert. Our server, Kim (with whom Sarah is friends from awhile back) was fantastic and brought us the two most chocolate-y desserts. The grilled chocolate-marshmallow brioche sandwich is basically a fancy s'more, aka full of awesome, and the chocolate gelato with peanut butter caramel and sea salt was pretty freaking amazing. The four of us shared both desserts and it was still too much, but we managed to shove it all in somehow. In addition to the tasty food, it's a cute little place with a nice ambience. The service was good, it was busy but not TOO busy, and there are creepy Spiderman-looking heads hanging on the walls (okay, sorry, they're paintings, not actual heads, but they look at you... and it's scary). Went here on saturday on a friend's recommendation, but I was very disappointed. The atmosphere is dark and moody... a good start. But things go down hill after that. The place is loud and crowded, and you need to seat yourself... but there is no where to sit. and forget coming here in a group of 3 or more. We stalk a table that's about to become open and we swoop in to get a seat. The menu is very limited... there is only one page of food and about five pages of alcohol. They call their food tapas, but these aren't tapas... I know tapas... these are just overpriced appetizers. This is Oliver's Twist's big dilemma... it doesn't really know if it wants to be a bar or a restaurant. It does bar alright, but it's not a food place. the duck fat fried fries were way salty and were mushy. The pulled pork sliders are three silver dollar-sized jokes. Then, the service. The waitress looked annoyed and was very short with us. she hurried us through our meal and didn't even ask how everything was. This place was highly recommended by a friend, and Yelp has it at 4 stars. I want to say that maybe the service was a fluke, but the crowded room and overpriced appetizers that were not that good are not flukes. read more

I think I love this place in spite of its self. It's like the boyfriend you always thought you could change. You can't, but you just keep hopin'... I love their drinks, I love their garlic truffle popcorn and I dig their vibe. Somehow it's hip and casual and dressy and edgy all at the same time. They usually play decent music and I give their bartenders props, they know their stuff. They have a huge whiskey, scotch and bourbon selection along with cocktails that "make you think", most of which are good even if they sound like they won't be. My standards are the Sowerberry, Presbyterian and occasionally the Maylie. Happy hour is from 5-7p and if you plan on coming with a group, come early! This place can fill up especially after 8p. The service always sucks whether or not it's crowded, so be prepared. It's slow, they never refill your water and you usually have to wait 20+ minutes for your next drink, which is always ordered after you've already finished your current one, which would be fine if you had water, but you don't. Last time I asked 3 times for a new napkin over the course of 40 minutes and never got one. Never the less as mentioned above, I will be back. I hate to say it, but I love this place, even with all its faults. read more

In quirky little Phinney Ridge, this bar is classy, hip and yet still a little "Phinney." It's a must-go for anyone in the area. Nice atmosphere, we seem always to find a seat right off the bat - it's not packed, but never empty either. As everyone mentions, the truffle popcorn is a hit, and for a good reason. You must try it. We keep going back, and it's never a complete visit without a batch of truffled goodness. The cocktails are good...nothing spectacular but very good. The tapas are excellent as well. With several months between today and my last most recent visit, I wasn't sure that the chemistry would still be there, but boy did they prove me wrong. If possible, I think Oliver's Twist has gotten even BETTER. Lovelovelove the leather upholstered benches adorned with plush cushions, the ridiculously perfect art they always have (current favourite: an elephant defending itself against Martian invaders in the middle of the desert-- I'd buy it without hesitation if I had a spare $342), the dim, but not too dark lighting, and the perfect amount and selections of food. After months of speaking longingly of my return, I finally was able to drag my boyfriend out here since his best friend was in town visiting and we were in the neighbourhood and I'm very pleased to say that they both enjoyed it quite a bit. We got: - garlic truffled popcorn: necessary - tomato cappuccino: classic - arugula salad: boyfriend's - cheese & peach plate: didn't try this, but apparently the peach was drizzled in vinaigrette of some sort and bf's bff described it as something conjured up by a 'taste wizard' so I imagine that this is a good thing - maylie, whiskey sour, amaretto sour and our bill came to around $65 + tip, which seemed pretty reasonable with the drinks, although happy hour prices would have been much better ;) Speaking of happy hour, theirs lasts 7 hours on Sunday evenings so I highly recommend coming here then. $1 off food and drink specials all night! read more

This place was totally fine - nothing too special, but a perfectly acceptable happy hour spot. I had a nice cocktail, it sounded more delicious and complicated than it turned out to be, but I was still happy with it. I had the truffle popcorn which came out a little burnt, pretty unpleasant, and the liver pate which was a little bland. Again, fine food, nothing worth writing home about. About half way through the meal we were asked to move tables, as there was a reservation that needed our space. I wish the table had been marked as reserved to save me and my dining companion a little embarrassment, but they comped us a round of drinks, which I really appreciated. It's gotten a lot more crowded and popular in the last year, but their cocktail menu is solid, and they have some of the best bar food in the city. I love their food menu! Truffle popcorn is delish, their "tomato soup cappuccino" and grilled cheese is humorous and yummy, and they have grilled chocolate marshmallow brioche sandwich...Grilled. Chocolate. Marshmallow. After years of wanting to try Oliver's Twist, I finally made my way to the Greenwood neighborhood this past weekend in celebration of my friends birthday. I love the eclectic decorations, fun music and delicious cocktails, wine and food. In celebration we had champagne and birthday treats including the sorbet and smores sandwich! Oh this bar has become our niche. My husband and I walked in on a sad Tuesday afternoon after a very defeating day at work. We sat down hanging our heads down low trying to figure out which drink we would drown our sorrows in. The guy who took our order appeared to be enjoying his life outside of a cubicle. We received our drinks, took one sip and boy were our spirits lifted. We live here now. I don't think we will ever leave. Haha The owner of this establishment is amazing. The staff is incredible. This is my favorite place to drink and home of my favorite bartender, Robert. The cocktails are the best and made with extra care and precision. The staff is always super cool and attentive. And the food is really good for being a spot where the main focus is on craft cocktails. The bites are smaller portions but c'mon, we're here to drink in the cool and intimate atmosphere that is Oliver's Twist. And don't let "cool" make you think of some hipster bar up on the Hill. If you have never been to Oliver's Twist, you must stop by. I've been here a few times and each time I go back I love this place more and more. If you can, save your dessert cravings for this place and try the truffle popcorn or the marshmallow chocolate sandwich...they are oh so good! They have a decent selection of beers here, but not all of them are on tap. They do carry a hefeweizen that I haven't seemed to find in any other bar yet. The service has always been good but I'm sure at 11PM on a Saturday night it can be a bit slow. And if you come with a large group expect to not get a table or seating during their busy hours. But if you're with just a few friends, you can most likely find some cozy seating in the back of the bar. read more

This place was pretty cool! I loved the decor inside. We came here for a light dinner and it was pretty satisfying. I had the pulled pork sliders - for some reason they decided burnt buns were the way to go. They weren't bad, just different, pretty good actually. My husband had the grilled cheese with tomato soup - very delicious. Items are cheap but small, so you will need to order multiple for yourself if you want a true dinner. Needed a new place to go with my cousins. Found this on yelp. I LOVE the area its in, very quite and refreshing from the usual hussle and bustle of the city. Got a table immediately, the candlelight and craft interior made it cozy and the menu was easy to navigate. I ended up having two "Missy Sally"s, the kale plate, pate (huge portions!!!! for cheap), and the truffle popcorn. ALL exceeded my expectations, the waitress for beyond nice and polite, and the pace of the kitchen allowed just enough time to catch up with my family. I will definitely be going back on my own and whoever wants to come to explore the rest of the menu. Go here! You won't regret it :) read more

I am always torn about this place. The drinks and food are so good, but man oh man the service is slow. Sometimes unbearably slow. Pros: 1) Their drink Charlotte #2 is an excellent whiskey drink and if you are lucky enough to come in before the bar gets busy, the bartender may make it right then for you. 2) ALL of their food is excellent except for the Kale dish. Both times we ordered it, it was oversalted. Best items on the menu in order of greatness are their bacon stuff dates, pulled pork sliders & truffle popcorn. 3) Don't forget dessert. They have this dessert there that is chocolate gelato with peanut butter sea salt breadcrumb kind of things. Holy sweet jesus that is so so good. Cons: 1) On weekends there is nowhere to sit and if you do finally get a seat, expect a good 15-20 before the waitress gets to your table. 2) Getting the bill is a challenge every time we have gone in. It's like.. this is the most crucial part of the whole service. When your table is ready to leave, get them their bill or your tip goes down exponentially. Waiting half an hour for a bill is crazy and then waiting another half hour for it to be processed is even crazier. Major tip: If you are just going in for drinks order at the bar and then go back to your table. read more

It's hard to find that perfect bar. The one that makes you feel comfortable but provides enough ambiance to make it worthwhile to leave your living room. The one that is creative but not pretentious. The one that is full enough on a Friday night to make it feel alive but not so crowded that you have nowhere to sit. The one that offers delicious cocktails AND beer AND wine AND food. The one that doesn't break your wallet. Oliver's Twist managed to meet this high bar. We met up with some friends on a Friday night and lingered around the bar until a table opened up, which happened almost instantly. The service was excellent and we got our drinks within a matter of minutes. The dark and stormy was one of the best cocktails I have had in the entire city. And when we ordered a single late night s'more sandwich to split between four people our waitress brought out individually divided pieces for us to devour (all too quickly). I will say right off the bat that I did not try any food - only drinks - but I doubt that could have redeemed this place too much because the service was the one and only problem. It's a a nice looking place with a nice cocktail menu, a relaxed vibe, comfortable seating, etc. However, the service was spacey and very SLOW. It was not that busy in there the night we were there and yet it took twenty minutes to get a drink, and then forever before she checked back again to see if we needed anything else. She looked completely disinterested in her job and I felt like I was bothering her to ask for anything. On top of that, there was a group of six of us and when we split up the bill, for some reason she just added all the tax onto my tab specifically. Didn't bother to ask how we wanted to handle it. Maybe she didn't like me from the start? I don't know. It was not a disastrous experience, and I would like to try their food, but I don't feel particularly inclined to go back. read more

I got together here with an old friend on a Wednesday night. We arrived at 7:30 p.m. and easily snagged a high top table in the bar. I absolutely love the low lighting and funky decor here, and we were immediately greeted by a friendly waitress. Oliver's Twist is a tapas bar so they have a pretty limited menu with only one page of food and about five pages of alcohol. We ordered some wine and a few small plates to share. The blue cheese-bacon stuffed dates with marcona almonds and warm tomato vinaigrette were very yummy, as well as the duck fat roasted fingerling potatoes with aioli, but the pulled pork sloppy joe sliders were pretty disappointing. The flavor was just blah and ketchupy, and the sauce had totally soaked through the bun turning it into a gooey, falling apart mess. We didn't finish them. At $8 per appetizer and about the same for a glass of wine, it didn't take us long to rack up a bill of almost $100 (including tip)... pretty steep for me considering I didn't even get a whole meal. But even though I think Oliver's Twist is kind of overpriced, the atmosphere and service are great, and it's a perfect place to meet a friend for a quiet, mid-week catch up session. Whenever we need to get together, we head here for some one-of-a-kind cocktails. Our favorite is the MISS NANCY! (honorable mention, French 75) but seriously, Miss Nancy is the business! I'm so glad I finally got to try this place! My friend and I stopped in here for a drink to kill time before our dinner reservation. It's funky, cozy and intimate - I immediately fell in love with the overall vibe of this neighborhood cocktail bar. I ordered the Giles - vodka, blood orange, elderflower and bubbly. It was like it was invented for me. Tangy, fizzy and not to sweet. It was perfection! My friend ordered the classic Moscow Mule which was done well, and in the traditional glass (nice and frosty!) I'm not a fan of the seating. That's really the only reason I can't give this place five stars. Some people will think that's petty, but they are really so good that the crappy seating is the only thing keeping them from five stars. I'm a cocktail snob. I really love a well made classic cocktail, and that's what I love about about this place, I can order a classic cocktail, and even if it's not on the menu, neither the server nor the bartender bats an eye, and the drink gets made the way it should be. If you order even something as simple a a Manhattan, lesser bars will ask you if you want it up, or on the rocks. Here, they know that if you didn't want it up, you'd say so. They also know that you want it right, with rye. No, the questions they'll ask is if you want a premium rye, or have a preference in the bitters. It's that good of bar. I think that's why the seating bugs me. They serve the sort of drinks that make you want to sit in Victorian couches and leather arm chairs. The nosh is pretty good too. Certainly not a place to go for a meal, but they offer tasty bites to nibble on while you drink. read more

I would like to add my own glowing review of Oliver's Twist (play on words as in "olive or twist with your drink") One of my favorite places in the world. The wait staff is always friendly and helpful, if not a bit quirky, and under their guidance I explored the entire menu. Not in one setting, mind you, but over the course of many, many visits. They change it up from time to time, but always have standby classics such as the grilled cheese and tomato soup cappuccino. I had no idea that frothed tomato soup could be so right! And if you're feeling super indulgent, you can't go wrong with the chocolate marshmallow brioche sandwich. An adult take on s'mores that leave you feeling like a kid who can also drink fabulous martinis. Catch the happy hour 5-7 Mon thru Sat and all Sunday evening to try some of the amazing drink selection. My three personal favorites are the Charlotte #2, Maylie,and Sowerberry. It's a struggle to decide which one to drink every time I go in. As someone who is not a huge fan of overdone cocktails, I surrender to jeers every time I gush about this place. The difference here is that they don't mix drinks for the sake of mixing as much as possible in one glass. They mix drinks with intention and get it right every time. read more

10/10 stars My boyfriend and I are visiting from California and we visited this place last Saturday night. We ordered the garlic truffle popcorn which was fantastic, then ordered the "Last Word" cocktail. Delicious. My boyfriend and I were talking about a jar of fancy cherries we had bought from the grocery store back home, and we were looking at a bottle on their shelf wondering if it was the same brand. Robert, one of the bartenders was attentive to our curiosity and pulled down the bottle for us to look at. We even were able to taste it. He gave us food recommendations and went the extra mile with his service. Great experience from everyone, but he stood out in particular. We also returned tonight, and are being served by Nathan. He too is a fantastic bartender. We ordered a Singapore Sling and a Scofflaw. Drinks are on point and delicious. A great place to relax with friends and enjoy delicious drinks. Beautiful decor, fantastic service, and interesting food items. We came on a Friday night and luckily the front table was free and we were served immediately. I loved the whiskey sour and brioche smores in particular. It ain't cheap, but comparable with other cocktail bars. It would be an awesome place to celebrate any occasion. The neighborhood is great for bar hopping, enjoying a pre-dinner cocktail, or capping off the evening with the perfect dessert. It is smallish inside, but I think this adds to the intimate atmosphere. read more

Classy! But hit or miss I think. First of all the decor is, as I mentioned, classy. It's like an antique shop exploded inside the cafe - ornate mirrors, heavy vases, candles and low lights. The modern ski mask art along the entryway is jarring and should be taken down immediately though. The drinks sound great and they have a nice mix of specialties and classics that are fairly priced. I struck out with my sazerac though - extremely one-note with no depth. I thought I was drinking a double shot of straight rye. I tried my friends' drinks though and they were much more complex. My only other quibble - a French 75 (my classy bartenders test) with cava? Um, no. Don't you put that under "classics". And don't try and charge me $9 for it when you're using a cheap champagne substitute. (OK I don't have a huge problem with cava itself, but it's place is not in a French 75). Also they have a house specialty cocktail of gin, elderflower and grapefruit that is straight lifted from Serafina's specialty cocktail menu. Copycats! Food: we got the garlic truffled popcorn and it was divine - I wanted to lick my fingers. The other offerings sounded good and the prices seemed fairly reasonable for a fancy martini bar. Service was good even though it was packed. They brought stools for our group so that we could fit six people at a four person table and they were very nice about it. They couldn't split the bill but didn't mind charging different cards for different amounts. I would go back, but challenging their motto, I do not "want more"... of their sazerac. read more

Oliver's Twist is a bar first and foremost. The food menu consists entirely of small plates. Everything I had was delcious. And the desserts were fantastic. Grilled chocolate and marshamallow brioche sandwich. Yum. The chocolate gelato with peanut caramel was also insanely tasty. Don't go expecting a full dinner. If you want some nibbles with your drinks or a late-night dessert this is a great choice. Also there are slim pickings for non-alcoholic drinks. I have been to Oliver's Twist probably twenty times and it is stellar every... single...time. The have a chalkboard with their house cocktails and I think I have tried every single one with the Red Hook and Scofflaw being the best of the best. Robert, if he is there, is one of the best bartenders in Seattle, in my very humble opinion. I had been to OT at least 15 times before I tried the food and, again, home run. The menu isn't huge but every thing I have tried has been excellent. Cheese-stuffed dates? Marshmallow brioche sandwich? Chocolate gelato with peanut butter caramel with sea salt? Yes, yes and yes. The space is very dark, intimate and cozy and my favorite Greenwood haunt. If you come and visit Seattle I will try to take you there for a cocktail. Consider yourself warned. read more

I was told about this place by someone who had recently left Seattle and was saying this was a great bar so after some persuasion to my friends we gave it a try. Firstly the drinks, they are pretty damn good! One thing is that is lacking is a better beer selection as I normally start with beer and then try the mixed drinks for size. We all ordered food and the small grilled cheese with cappuccino tomato is to die for . The kale is good as is the truffle oil and garlic popcorn. The staff are super friendly, I have been back now a 2nd time and word to the wise is to get there early on the weekends for a good seat. One small criticism of Olivers Twist is that all the food we tried was on the salty side. read more
