I had Shepherd's Pot Pie for $24. Shepherd's pie is supposed to be made of lamb. I couldn't taste any lamb; it was mostly ground beef. And shepherd's pie should be solid; this was a watery stew. Pot pie is supposed to have a pie crust on top, baked onto the pot. This had a disk of potatoes submerged in the pot that wasn't toasted under a broiler and didn't cover the surface. And it was tiny; an 8 or 10 ounce ramekin, with some watery stew. So for $24 I got a small bowl of stew and a lot of green leafy salad, not anything resembling either pot pie or shepherd's pie. The goat cheese salad with blackened salmon is AWESOME, and another highly recommended one is the black bean burger - one catch is that it comes in pita bread. My fave place for a catch up with a friend, or for a solo "journaling bite"-- as was the case today. The women who work there are great- (although sometimes working too hard due to understaffing). Today I had the blackened salmon sandwich with a yummy green side salad. (One thing I don't understand is the need to continue to serve dishes with rounds of uncooked onions, and green chili peppers-- does anyone actually eat these?) I love that they have a little blackboard in the women's room-- see photo below for the enjoyable message seen. This is a great pub with a British vibe and a nice neighborhood feel. The food is much better and more varied than you usually find. They offer 3 weekly specials in addition to the regular menu. We met up with an old friend at the 74th Street Ale House last night for drinks, dinner, and conversation! While the 74th street ale house may seem unassuming, I always throughly enjoyed the food and atmosphere. I almost always order the Blackened Salmon Sandwich with a side salad, you just can't beat it! The salmon is flavored wonderfully, and is always tender and flaky. The others in my group ordered the Chicken Breast sandwich and the Argentinian Pork Sandwich, respectively. I would say the restaurant is always busy, even on a Wednesday night at 6pm almost all the tables were full, so don't expect the waiter to bring you water unless you request it. However, it all adds to the neighborhood pub frequented by regulars vibe. And if you're looking to linger at your table long after the check arrives-- this is a great place to do it! read more

The drinks were horrible. Definitely stick to the beer. The service was rude. I think the bartender intentionally made me the wrong drink, as I asked for an old fashioned and she served it with some sort of soda water. Not very much bourbon/whiskey. It was strange. How many places can you say you've frequented for 20 years. Well, I've come to 74th Street Ale House since I moved to Seattle back in 2000. My love for this place started with a weekly trek to have the Reuban Sandwich and I'd have a Snakebite to drink. After a decade my taste changed and I evolved to some of the best iced tea in Seattle and the blue cheese burger with the grilled onions and bell peppers. On top of the great menu they have weekly specials and the homemade soups and gumbo are fantastic. Great place to meet up with friends and have a meal and drink some beers although the do have a full bar too. Mostly a neighborhood place with lots of locals and the staff know more of the regulars as they've worked here for a few decades too. I highly recommend 74th Street Ale House and BTW I just came back from there and had the Gumbo, a Guinness and chased it down with a iced tea to boot. read more

This place is has amazing food, great drink selection and always welcoming staff. It does have an old country feel. Sit down tables and bar seating I was pleasantly surprised in the quality of food for the price. They have different specials each week including soup. Having just finished up a fun visit to the Water Lantern Festival at Green Lake, #seattledude and I were hungry and feeling underwhelmed by the food truck options at the festival. (Plus, there was no beer!) So we hopped on Yelp and found the 74th Street Ale House just up the hill in Phinney Ridge. It was pretty crowded on a Saturday evening, but we found a table in the back and quickly ordered a couple of pints. I had one of my faves, a Mac 'n Jacks, which is almost impossible to find on tap closer to home. He had a stout. Good autumn beers for sure! We also split an oyster po' boy sandwich and a goat cheese salad. They even split them for us, at no extra charge, which was super sweet. The food was fresh and delicious, though I felt the goat cheese portion on the (split) salads were pretty small. The po' boys were tasty, and the oysters were fresh and perfectly fried. It was a good meal to top off a cool fall day in the big city. The service was great, too - our waitress was friendly and helpful, not to mention patient as we were pretty indecisive about what to order from their extensive menu. read more

I REALLY had a craving for a Reuben so on our way north from downtown - we started to search for a restaurant to satisfy that need. Tried one that said they served Ruebens - but not today - brunch till 2. Found this place and got a table right away and a great Reuben! Very saucy - some are too dry and have too much bread. They also do red cabbage sauerkraut which was great. Only drawback was that they didn't have fries. The ladies with me both had the gumbo which they said was spicy and tasty. I was in the neighborhood around dinner and decided to grab a mixed green salad to go. I ordered at the bar and waited only about ten minutes before my order was up. The restaurant was very busy when I was there at 6:30 on a Monday night - a good sign for a small neighborhood restaurant! I will definitely come back for a full meal in the future. I'll start off with the bang which was the Reuben sandwich! I can confidently say it is probably one of the best Reuben's in the city. If you're a Reuben aficionado then you know there are different styles. This one is a melty version as it is warm and finished off in the oven. It's full of all the flavors of corned beef, rye, and thousand Island. True to its name, I have a nice list of taps, but they also have the standard bar issue for mixed drinks. This place is a dream for a pub lover, but not the dark and dingy, so much as the warm, light, and bright. Three feel is that off a love child from an Irish, an English, and a Scottish rolled into one. The menu selection and the food quality are at a restaurant level but in the easy going casual ambiance off your neighborhood pub. read more

This place is a joke. After eavesdropping on my conversation the bartender made some attempt to ridicule me about not being able to make a woman happy? Didn't really make sense but what happened next made less sense. He tried to make me pay for another customers food and physically grabbed me when I refused. I ended up calling the police but then was told to leave. I tried to pay for my meal but they would t let me. So maybe I shouldn't be complaining about a free meal but the service sucked. 10/10 would Not visit again. read more

Let me say from the start that we've been to the 74th St. Ale House many times; it is one of our favorites. But something happened tonight that's just unacceptable and unprofessional. We ordered and waited. . .and waited for over 30 minutes. Then we started to see people who came in fifteen minutes after us getting served. When I asked the waiter what was going on, he went back to the register and realized he never entered our order. Rather than being super apologetic, or saying, hey, let me rush it--this one's on me, he curtly said sorry, told us we didn't have to pay for a beer we ordered and that was it. Listen, if you make people wait over a half hour and then realize you never entered their order, you've wasted their time and you need to make more of a gesture than that. Again, this is a great restaurant with great food and ambiance, but when a great place makes a big mistake, that have to be great in responding as well. read more

Somewhere between 3 & 4 stars for my first visit, but rounding up for potential. Very much a soup, salad, and burger type of place with full bar. Our group wandered over for a bite to eat after Chez Phinney. Small outdoor patio area is dog friendly. They were pretty busy inside, but our server was on top of it and didn't leave us hanging. She was fantastic with great recommendations from their menu and their bar. The gin martini was excellent. I appreciate that they will sub an Impossible patty for any of their burgers. Unfortunately, I can't eat Impossible products which really limits vegetarian options for me. I went with the black bean pita burger (knife and fork required!), but the raw onion in the house-made pico de gallo really overpowered it. The caesar salad was great. Meh, this was not great. The positives of this were the staff mostly. They Are professional, and exceptionally attentive and friendly. The space was also nice, clean and homey and was able to accommodate the large group I came with. But the food was bad. I had a Cesar Salad with blackened chicken. The salad was very skimpy and bland and the chicken was a bit too spicy. My friends both had the $17 bowl of pasta and were very disappointed. They said it was bland and greasy and just smothered in cheese, something they wow have expected at a Midwestern diner. I also ordered the garlic cheese bread and that was the most disappointing thing of all. It's just shredded white and yellow cheese and microwaved on garlic bread???? Seriously? it was like something I would've made for myself at home after coming back from a night of drinking my early 20s. This was my first time to this ale house. I feel sure I will not return. I ordered a Cesar salad as my dinner. I assumed I'd get a dinner sized salad. What I got was a tiny plate of lettuce, croutons and a bit of shredded cheese. I would have expected this as a starter plate. When I asked the waitress about the tiny salad she confirmed this was indeed their dinner size. Ridiculous. I ended up ordering another item to make it a meal. I ordered the artichoke hummus pita plate, tiny dish of humus that wasn't very good, tasteless red pepper slices, some Greek olives and bread. Boo. Terribly disappointing. You get one star because the waitress was nice. The good news is that there are a zillion other restaurants options in this area. Skip this place. read more
