I expected them to tell me step-by-step what I needed to do and they never gave me all the info/details I needed. Ex. - Before my hearing, they told me which documents were required by the court but failed to tell me there was a page limit. Also, I thought the first hearing would determine the custody/divorce. I didn't know I would wait months for the hearing that would determine everything. Bob handed my case over to Andrew without letting me know. Less time/attention was put into my case after the first hearing. I only got phone calls/emails from them when the court required something. There were numerous times that I had to call/email them to ask them to answer my first call/email after days of no response. I was charged the minimum time allotment (I think 20 mins) for them to read an email which asked them to respond to my first email. When a g.a.l. was appointed, I was mailed some paperwork and Bob said I didn't need to fill any of it out. Then after getting an email from the g.a.l. asking for paperwork, I looked through the papers and realized that I did need to fill it out. This was embarrassing and made me look bad. Andrew went with me to mediation. Most of the mediation was me just sitting there and Andrew chiming in every now and then. I didn't get the help and guidance that I paid so much for. I also got very mixed signals in terms of feeling like he was on my side and trying to protect me from the stuff my ex-husband and his attorney were trying to get away with. He pointed things out a few times that they had tried to sneak into the parenting plan and he said this isn't ok and needs to be changed. Other times he seemed indifferent/like he didn't care and was super quiet. By the time my court hearing came up I wanted to find a different attorney but felt like I didn't have enough time to do so. Due to all of the above, I made a decision that I will regret for the rest of my life and made a deal with my ex because I felt I had no other choice. After all of the paperwork was finalized and I was mailed copies of everything, I was told by Andrew that I could go ahead and change my name at any time. I went to the DOL to update my license only to find out that my copy of the paperwork WASN'T CERTIFIED and that I would need to come back with a certified copy. I had to call and ask that they send me one without charging me for it... When my bf picked up my trial retainer refund, Dena was super rude and unprofessional towards him and laughed at him when he was surprised the refund was only $300. She joked about it with the other office staff saying we thought we were going to get it all back. My bf corrected her and said no we didn't expect to get it all back but we expected more than that since we didn't go to trial. The next year, my ex moved with our kids out of the boundary that's listed in our parenting plan. I had to take him to court, so I found a new attorney. My new attorney was a MILLION times more helpful. She said if Helland had asked me for documents for dr./dentist visits for my kids showing that I took them to their appts. that it is a HUGE factor in determining custody. NO ONE AT HELLAND TOLD ME THIS/EVER MENTIONED IT! She ALSO said attorneys who nickel-and-dime people don't like those clients and most attorneys who have ethics/morals don't do this. Knowing that I easily could have gotten full custody (especially after going to court and seeing other custody cases where the mother was awarded full custody despite not working or had things that I thought were "negative" going against her) and HLG failed me/took my money is incredibly depressing. I am a male and my experience with him was pathetic at best. A couple dozen of unanswered emails, and unused pertinent information that would have been beneficial to my case. Failed to send me a zoom meeting for a pre-trial. Calls me while I am on vacation and asks if I were going to join the meeting. I had to rush to my hotel and join the zoom meeting. His paralegal even charged me a small amount when she needed to review my case when they decided to change paralegals on me. The OC sent an email to Des explaining to him that I need to stay out of the home of my ex, that is her primary residence. I explained that I had not been in her residence for two months. They sent the letter two months later, the next thing I know we are in trial and I am ordered to pay $1500 of my exes lawyer fees because I had not stayed out of her house. They had zero proof of me being in her house subsequent to the first or second letter sent to Des. Des just did not look at the evidence and the lack thereof evidence to defend me. Des told me that was his fault and it was his responsibility to contact OC. Des never contacted OC. I wanted to have GAL or counselor to talk to my kids about the living situation, the OC opposed it and Des did not fight for the GAL or a counselor. He gave up and let the ex win that request. Even the Judge called out the fact that no GAL or counselor was used and he has nothing to go on from the children's perspective. I provided Des information about how my kids felt regarding the living situation, Des did not use it. It fell on def ears again. I was forced to get a CMA for my home, Des never used it as an exhibit and used a made up value of my home that he submitted a value to OC and to the courts resulting in $45K more than the value of my home. I asked for a mistrial, he never pursued it. Had multiple reschedules and when I asked Des, he said it was the OC requesting the rescheduling. I reached out to my ex asking why is her lawyer making all these reschedules, she informed me that it was my lawyer. In my opinion, they were working together to gather as much money from "us" as they could. I wish I would had fired him. I spent around $60k on my divorce only to be told by Des, in my 25years, that was the second worse ruling I've ever had. I had to ask for pre-trial conference with Des after our first trial date. Des was totally unprepared for my case. Had he used the information from the emails I sent him, things would have turned out better for me. I feel Des has become complacent in the divorce world for men and doesn't really care. He got his $60K (ish) from me and moved on. Months later I did receive an email or phone call stating that the judge Leroy McCollough and or his bailiff failed to send Des the final judgement / ruling and it was way past the appeal date. Maybe true, but I have my doubts because of past behavior. He said he would still try and appeal it for me. He did try, cost me another $1700 for their time. I did back out of the appeal, I felt I would have lost even more. He is good at knowing the law, he is good talker, I believe it may have been an hour of free phone call time during the almost 2 year divorce process. Des is a nice guy, he just lost his passion. The one thing I remember most about why I would never recommend him as a divorce lawyer to anyone that outweighs all the above.. He also lies. Blatant lies were told to by Neal saying that he sent us information/updates and nothing actually came through our email. I asked for these emails to be forwarded to me so that I can see that he sent them in a timely manor, they were quickly created and obviously created when I asked for them. He could never prove he sent emails that he stated that he did. Our claims were eventually denied by the companies that caused damage to our property. Neal dropped us as clients immediately after without cause. The reason given was "for various reasons" with no explanation. He was a large talk about taking things to trial when in fact he is just looking for an easy dollar and wouldn't take our case to court like he promised. He wasted our time when we could have been working with a real lawyer that supports their clients and believes in them.

By 9:00 a.m. sharp, I had an email from Neal with a Cease & Desist letter that was fantastically written, assertive and grabbed the landlord's attention because she stopped harassing us for a few weeks. However, when I responded to his email, I asked 2 questions: 1. "Check or Card" for payment? 2. What should I do if she still tries to wrongfully evict us/ change the locks/ touch our personal belongings? I got a response ONLY to how he wanted payment. I didn't think anything of it, but sent a second email later on in the day asking the question again, and still, no response. A week later I attempted to reach out again for fear that the landlord would not stop harassing us. To which, she continued. So I decided to call multiple times trying to figure out if Neal was on vacation (though I hadn't received an auto-responder), nor did his voicemail state that he was out of the office for an extended period of time. Each time I called, I would ask, "Is Neal on vacation? Can you please tell me?", to which they rudely cut me off mid-sentence and transferred me. I left 2 voicemails, the first sounding slightly desperate because our landlord has openly told us she is not afraid of US/ WA lawyers and judges. The 2nd voicemail I sounded upset, by this time having reached out 7 times in a 2-3 week span. If he did not wish to work with us, could not help us further, he could have just stated in the first email after I asked by responding, "I"m sorry, I can not assist you further.". However, he chose not to respond at all. It has now been 3.5 weeks since we last heard from him and I am tired of having to beg an attorney to call me back. I'm extremely sad in the recommendation we were given. And last but not least, I am gravely disappointed by Mr. Bonrud's complete lack of professionalism and communication. He has honestly wasted my time and my money when I could have just found another attorney that showed interested, empathy, and true concern for my situation. I may be young, but I have managed to uphold a pretty successful small business. If I treated my clients the same way I have been treated, I would not be in business anymore. With so many options out there, one might think that a client, though only offering a few hours of work, may return with a larger case = more money; and those clients would be pleased, referring more clients = even more money. I've been asked about the attorney that wrote our C&D letter, and I also make sure to add to fellow business owners about the apathy and insensitivity to the urgency of my situation, as it has thoroughly impacted my business; because I can't offer services if I'm attempting to get in contact with the person I hired to safeguard me and my business, 4 or 5 times. I wish I had something more positive to say, but I did not have a positive experience; and when I reached out to attorney that referred me, I got the impression that neither of them cared. Which ultimately was a giant disappointment.
