Julia, I am commoved to your new sensitive approach to managing kids. Something that our family didn't experience in your installations. Yes, my reaction was inappropriate; it was the first time someone shot me the cruel statement that my seven years old are not allowed to be part of a sport and recreational program for his disability. You forgot to mention that in your reply! Also, to support that cruel statement, you told me that you have the right to choose to provide service as a private business. You forgot to mention that, too, in your sensitive reply. And also, after you expressed these two wrong statements, you tried to justify that your program and staff were not prepared to handle a kid with disabilities. My kid only needs time to feel comfortable in any activity; for the rest, he is an exceptional and incredible kid, like any other kid with any behavioral challenge. I can't imagine what would happen if a family with a kid with a severe condition arrived at Olympia Fencing Center in Cambridge, MA. And Julia is there! For the rest, the coaches of your center are great. Yes, I behaved incorrectly to interact with a respectful person, but I was in front of a discriminative person; that cataloged my kid without knowing him as someone who cannot be part of a fencing program. That was the trigger point, Julia. Julia, thank you for the lollipops you gave to my kids. A lollipop doesn't make you good or bad, but your expressed words reflect your beliefs and values. You are a discriminative person! And you are correct in your reply; that is something I will legally check if the City of Cambridge and the State of Massachusetts will support that a seven years old kid is not allowed to be part of a program, as you said, "for his disability." read more

Olympia Fencing is a wonderful community for kids and parents. My son generally starts shy but warms up in time. The coaches have built his confidence and skill in a very positive manner. Our whole family fences at Olympia and we love it. Great coaches, very supportive and encouraging atmosphere and it's fabulous exercise!

The staff discriminated against my child here. The owner approached me to ask me "if he was always this shy" and when I responded affirmatively, she asked me if he was "seeing a specialist because many parents don't admit when their children have a problem". Even though I thought her question and comment were highly inappropriate and personal, I responded and told her that in fact yes, my child was attending therapy for his social anxiety. I applaud the coaches as they were wonderfully accommodating to my child but the owner needs to respect the laws and refrain from discriminating against children with disabilities of any kind. Will not recommend this place to anybody. read more

If you are thinking about trying out the sport of modern fencing I highly suggest you checkout Olympia Fencing Center in Cambridge. When I was looking for a coach for my son I first met Daniel Hondor, the head coach at OFC. My son enrolled in a youth program to learn the basics of the sport and within a short time the club had become his second home. The environment is fantastic, rasied wooded floors that are great to fence on, all new fencing equipment, large changing rooms, a lounge with WIFI and a giant flat panel (you get to watch a lot of world class bouts on TV) and free parking. In Cambridge!! The club supports a very friendly environment for all fencers. Everyone is encouraged to do their best and to work hard while at the club. Daniel is an excellent coach who shares his many years of international fencing and coaching experience with both adult and youth fencers. But OFC is also a stong competetive club as well. Fencers represent OFC at all local and national fencing events and a number of fencers hold national rankings in Epee (the weapon the club specializes in). read more

My son has been fencing with coach Daniel Hondor for about 7 years and when Daniel opened his own club - we were thrilled. Within months, Olympia has become everything we had hoped: the atmosphere is warm and welcoming, Daniel and Mark Elbag are excellent coaches for ALL levels, the club is big enough to support tournaments, and in general this is exactly the type of club you'd want! Tonight was my second class here, and it was even better than the first one. This is a top notch club, and I could not recommend them enough. I had never fenced previously, so I was unsure how the experience would go. The coaches made me feel comfortable and give great individual attention. I'm an adult fencer and have fenced in many clubs up and down the east coast over the past 20 years. The team at Olympia are among the most professional I have seen. Everyone is friendly and focused on ensuring you become a better fencer. While there is a broad skill and age range (I often find myself fencing people 25 years younger than me), there is a high level of camaraderie among fencers. Two things people overlook when selecting a club to either start or continue fencing: 1. The floor: A good floor will save your knees and feet over the long haul. Olympia's floor is quite nice - there is enough "give" to ensure you focus on footwork and not foot-pain. 2. Management: Fencing clubs are notorious for having inflexible contracts and poor management. In my 2+ years at Olympia I've never had a problem nor heard anyone speak of having a problem. As I sit here at my daughters swim meet I feel compelled to write a review for OFC. My daughter does both swimming and fencing but has had two totally different experiences with both of these sports. She absolutely loves fencing. OFC does an incredible job of making every student feel welcome and as if they are an important member of the club. Whether you are a beginner or a competitive fencer you get an excellent amount of attention. In some sports/clubs there is a very obvious feeling that the only students that matter are the ones who win competitions. This is not the feeling at OFC. Daniel and all of the other coaches pay excellent attention to all students. Aside from the lessons they focus on teaching all club members to respect each other and everyone in the club. The older students treat the younger students well and they mentor the newer students. If you are looking for a club with good teaching and where they focus on the important values of respect and camaraderie then check out OFC. read more
