Unfortunately not everyone picks up after their dog even though the poop bags are provided so still watch out for backside landmines while you are walking around or playing with your furry friend. There are a nice bench and picnic table to sit and soak in the naturally beauty as well. There are some great tall and established trees that provide plenty of shade and beautiful colors. It also helps to cover the ground a bit since there is some grass, but there is a large place of open ground that is muddy as well. There is also a great water station and looked like others have brought additional bins for water as well and locked them down so they cannot be taken. I do wish people would dump them and turn over when they are done so there is no added build up or sludge. There is no need to fill them to the tip top just fill it enough for your pup to drink and then empty as you leave. Because of all the shade it can get chilly even when the sun is out if the weather is crisp and frosty so wear your layers and bring your hot chocolate!

Lock your car door, and don't leave any valuables in plain sight. The entrance to the park is a tad bit tricky since it does require a vehicle to cross over solid yellow lines, so look in all directions and be mindful of other vehicles (especially if they are painted black/white ... if you get my message).

We didn't go in -- this was purely a socialization mission. Lobo stayed just outside the fence, observing the chaos like a wise old man watching neighborhood kids from the porch. And you know what? He crushed it. Calm, cool, and collected. Gold star. We don't plan on doing dog parks for play since he goes to daycare and thrives in a more structured setting, but if dog parks are your thing -- this one could be a winner. Clean, not overwhelming, and right next to the R Street Corridor, which means you can treat your pup to a full Midtown adventure after. Grab a walk, some sniffs, and maybe hit a patio if your dog's in a chill mood. Or do what Lobo did and just stand outside the fence like a refined gentleman, silently judging everyone inside. 10/10 outing. No paws were stepped on. No chaos ensued. We love to see it.

Many years later, I bring my children here and now a few generations later my grandchildren enjoy this park. My dad volunteered at the library at the park for many years and we ended up holding his celebration of life here (both in the rose garden and inside library). I have years of memories of hanging out here using the swimming pool, climbing trees, playing tennis & I used to run around the park when I lived nearby. We had roses planted in the Rose garden for my grandmother, my aunt and a child who died at birth. However, when they were redoing the rose garden, we had to take the plaques with us and now I have my aunts and grandma's plaque in my backyard with the same rose from the original rose garden. Shortly before my mother passed, we brought her to this park in her wheelchair and sat under a tree, enjoying a picnic with three generations of us. Needless to say this park holds numerous cherished memories.

Interestingly, the Sacramento Street Railway Company built the park in 1871 to attract people to take its trains. Then the park became a recreational area around the train line and continued to serve as a gathering spot for the residents in this neighborhood and the greater Sacramento community. Recently, we visited again to hang out with friends who wanted to meet up and have our kids play together and get out their wiggles while we chat and catch up. After the kids played for some time at the (new to us) playground, we walked over to enjoy the pond and to take a walk over to the Rose Garden. There's a path that surrounds the pond so you can get exercise with a view. We saw a lot of ducks and geese that day. Please don't feed them. They were friendly and very used to humans. After hanging out w/said friends of the fowl flavor for a few minutes, we walked towards the Rose Garden to enjoy the beauty of the roses and to people watch as they get their pictures taken and to hang out some more. Overall, I enjoyed visiting McKinley Park again, I really should come down here more often as it's a pretty great park, so big it takes up a whole city block and there's just so much nicely landscaped grounds, plant life, wildlife. It also offers a bunch of facilities to include a community pool, basketball court, a community center, picnic areas w/tables, several sports fields, plus tennis and volleyball courts. A lot offered here in one location!

The park is well kept and has a lot of green space as well as a baseball field, futsal court, basketball court, volleyball area, play area and dog park with separate fenced in areas for small and large dogs. There is also a walking/biking path that cuts through the park and sidewalks all the way around it. Sometimes we'll just do a loop or two, and sometimes we walk through this park and through to some of the connected ones from the bike/walking path. We used to use the dog park, but it's mostly gravel and our dog gets dirty pretty quick here. We've also seen, on a couple occasions, some bad dog interactions at the dog park so we prefer to just stay with our dog and have family walks on the path. Watch out for glass on the sidewalk by the street, especially if you're walking your dog. 9/10 it's safe and clean but occasionally there are some shards from broken bottles or windows. Overall, this park is well populated and used by people in the area, it's clean and it feels safe.

I have been a few times now and one day was muddy do the very much needed rain in California. Then the next few times there was a few dogs. It was great with no dogs the 1st time because we all got to see and get a feel for the place without dogs being dogs trying to make friends and not listen. Well mine is only a little over 4 months now so we are still training with him. Ok back to the barking.. i mean park. They have 2 dog poop bag areas, and trash for doggie waste and a water fountain for them to get there drank on! i would still bring your own bags cause they were both empty so far for the bags, and water fountain was kinda clean even for a dog, but still keep water on yourself just incase, could be really dirty or even shutoff next time like having kids and dogs always have to be prepared for them. The best part of walking the dog park was that i didn't even step in 1 pile or even find a pile being left behind from anyone. That was amazing and very refreshing to see people cleaning up!! High 5 to all who come here and to the ones everyday around this world that pick up after there pets! You are awesome and i thankyou bunches. I have stepped in a few at apartment complex were they have 5 stations fully stocked with bags and people still don't. :O/ They also have a big plastic container with some toys people either leave behind or donate im guessing and theres a lot of tennis balls in here. It's open from sunrise to sunset, it is located in the back of bannon creek park fenced behind the school. But if you come down bannon creek st. You will see a black n white sign with a dog and a arrow, so you can follow the sign and the dog will use his sense of smell maybe, and you should find your way.
