The restaurant located within the hotel is extremely noteworthy and well-known across the whole island, many people simply come here just to have breakfast lunch and or dinner. The pork chops have been written about all over travel sites and I must say I can still remember how delicious they were. A yelp or just like the photo that I took from this hotel, and it reminded me that I never added my review. I will be back on the island in the new year and look forward to coming back. What I will say this is far removed from all of the fancier hotels like Lanikai etc. this place is more residential for people that are looking for longer-term stays, and it's to my knowing that a separate building within the property is for residence or long-term stays. I do understand that some people have an issue with the tenants that live here versus those staying here on vacation. I luckily had no issues whatsoever. Don't forget to tip your housekeeper or leave a nice tip on the dresser before you leave

I did like meeting the geckos that look like the GEICO gecko during breakfast who were wanting fruit. Cons: there's no AC. Also I was woken up by I think a rooster at 5 am. Honestly, it wasn't anything spectacular, but I read and heard so much about it. They bring out 3 side dishes and tonight it was potato salad, a cucumber/imitation crab salad and shoyu long rice. Rice is served like in a Chinese restaurant in a big bowl and you scoop your own into your bowl. The service was very good, local style with her calling us aunty. So Kona, I love it! The hotel itself is over 100 years old and it is very nostalgic. Don't expect too much, it is home style cooking with local vibes. I enjoyed our dinner there and would go back to try something else on their menu.

He was incredibly kind, attentive, and got us set up with a helpful map of the resort and even assisted with scheduling our luau dinner. Breakfast each morning was amazing, and the evening service (4:30-6:30) included what were essentially full meals, along with unlimited drinks. It was such a great experience. Special shoutout to Zack, Tessa, and the rest of the team--they truly made us feel at home. The room itself was beautiful, with a great view, a comfortable bed, and a spacious shower--everything you'd want in a 5-star stay. Valet parking was also included with the club access, and the valet staff were consistently attentive and helpful. Update: This morning…read more(morning after) I woke up to use the bathroom to then noticing a swarm of tiny ants all over the tub and bathroom, bathroom floors and bathroom sink! They did offer to change my room last night but I was unpacked and tired. I wish I would have. I don't think they brought bug spray last night. I think it was cleaning solution. Had it been bug spray, not sure I would have run into ants today. I kindly asked the front desk to change my room for the remainder of my time here. She then asks me to come down to get my key. I asked her to have someone bring it up as I was in my pajamas. I felt sick here a while back during another incident with a very rude barista who berated me in front of other patrons offer something I was just trying to get clarification on. Long story but I wasn't feeling well. They had water damage and mold. Well they gave me a new room right next to where the mold was. Be prepared because you can smell it. After the last incident I chose not to come here for a few months. Sometimes I have to because it's for work. I came last week and luckily had a good stay and we got our rooms quick. Checked in today and there was an earthquake so my coworker messaged me to see if I was ok. And then said she had to have her room changed because there were small roaches all over the couch and the walls which I and many other coworkers experienced on multiple occasions. I get that we are in the tropics but I don't experience this anywhere else I stay. I go to Costa Rica often, Cancun, and the other islands in Hawaii weekly. I get up to grab something from the fridge and see a swarm of ants on the counter underneath the TV! They are all over my food bag! I know better than to leave any food out over here. I even leave my banana peel in the fridge until I head out o throw it out. Two nice gentleman came and started spraying the room with a bottle of bug spray. They asked me if I'd like to change rooms but I was afraid I might get a roach room so I chose to stay. I proceeded to go inside my fridge and noticed a ton of ants all over my food INSIDE the fridge! I had to throw all of my food out! I think it's good to make everyone aware because these are stubborn ants and I'm sure you don't want them all over your things so just want everyone to be aware of the infestation issue here. Again I'm here for work and instead of resting I spent an hour and a half washing my bag, the sink area because I moved my bag there and ants were crawling all over the place, had to wash all my utensils and things I keep in my bag for traveling. I'm from California and we usually have an exterminator come regularly so I'm not sure what's going on here to where this is a continuous problem. They got an extra star because the staff was really nice and came up very quick. The front staff was also very nice and acknowledged us upon arrival unlike past times where we used to wait anywhere from 30 min to an hour and a half for a room. I've been at my job for 20yrs staying in hotels every week and this place is the only place I've ever had an issue to where I had to get the manager involved or report it to our company. I think that says a lot! Luckily this will most definitely be my last stay here. Great mango trees on the property that I will miss venturing out for but other than that, I'd stay elsewhere. Food made me sick 2x, drinks are not good, bartenders are not happy and if you read my last post, it just hasn't been what I'd expect coming to Hawaii expecting more Aloha.

    Gingerhill Farm Retreat

    Gingerhill Farm Retreat

A pleasant and comfortable camping experience on the Big Island…read more As a solo woman, I spent 9 nights in the Jungle Canopy at Gingerhill Farm Retreat in April 2026. I had an excellent stay, although I am used to camping, and feel that having a camping mindset is required for staying here. Yes, the chorus of frogs are very loud as soon as it's dark, and you can hear roosters in the distance in the morning along with bird songs. However, I enjoyed the noises and am an early riser. The Jungle Canopy is located close to the private residence, and I experienced little human noise. There was one nighttime rain and no leaks. The screened-in bedroom is functional, and the bed has a good (firm) mattress. The sink and toilet, screened off and behind the bed, are nice to have in this enlarged tent. The shower is a few feet outside the tented bedroom/kitchen, and is open to the sky (cool to look up at the tree canopy). The shower is very nice, and the water gets hot. There is no door, but the only way you can be seen is from the Jungle Canopy tent itself (you can hang a sarong if you needed more privacy). They provide face clothes and towels, two worn beach towels, as well as family-size liquid hand soap, shampoo and conditioner (decent quality). The kitchen, in front of the screened bedroom, also under a canopy, has everything you need: pots and pans (including a few that are stainless steel), a good size fridge with a small enclosed freezer (with 2 freezer packs), a sink with dish soap, etc. They provide a Berkey-like water filter carboy, a stainless-steel kettle to boil water, as well as coffee beans, a grinder, and French-press. There is a small table with two chairs where you can look at beautiful tropical plants. The only bummer is that the hot plate to cook food and boil the kettle can be slow to heat, especially if there is a slight breeze. Once the propane tank emptied while I was cooking breakfast and I had to text to ask for a replacement, however, someone came over right away and I was able to resume cooking. Like camping, you are responsible for taking out your own trash to communal cans located a fairly short distance away. You can't put any toilet paper down the toilet, so all paper used for #1 and #2 needs to go into a plastic-bag-lined trash can and you remove and dump. They removed the compost. Recommendations to Gingerhill: provide more plastic bags for trash, more toilet paper (I had to ask), and offer a larger compost bucket as it filled too quickly. Also, one day I came back in the afternoon and found the gate code didn't work. I texted and called and fairly soon someone told me that they changed the code, but didn't notify me. Next time they change the code they should text all visitors staying at the farm the new code. So, in all, I would give a 9/10 ranking, especially given the cost compared to other accommodations, and the tropical farm experience. FYI, there is snorkeling gear that you can use that is located next to the Sunset Cottage.

Barbara and her team are lovely to be around and make you feel like you are a part of their community for a few days, rather than just "guests." The amenities are wonderful, the beds super comfortable, and the atmosphere is one of pure peace and belonging. We loved having access to the outdoor communal kitchen--with all the amenities that a great cook could want, and it was a welcome treat to enter the new year with a centering walk around the illuminarium maze, letting go of the things that have stopped serving us and embracing our intentions for the year to come. I can't recommend this enough as an out-of-the-ordinary Big Island experience.
