Needing to waste time before a movie, I thought, why not check out some shops. I was visiting the area, and I am always looking for a good antique find. Went to :On A Whim" to check things out. I was only able to check out one building, which was the main one, when you first entered the parking lot. It is 2 stories and filled with treasures. It was a delight to walk through. My only throwback was pricing. It was definitely out of my price range, and most items were overpriced. This store can get over crowded very quickly and it seems like everyone is walking on top of one another. Yes there are some antiques and it leans on the pink side (ultra-girly!) of shabby chic but I think it's overpriced and with many stops - I have yet to buy a single thing. In addition, you can walk in and out of the store without anyone greeting you or asking if you need help. I have loved this place for many years when I visit the area. They have an eclectic vibe that is hard to beat - many choices. But I bought two pieces of furniture recently and have been disappointed to get home and start to paint them and one leg fell off each of them It was obvious then that there had been repairs and GLUE used . They weren't cheap and there are no returns so I would say be very careful and check the piece out thoroughly before you buy any furniture there . If there were returns for faulty items - no problem but you cannot. Last but not least the staff were not wearing masks and huge sign on the front door to wear one ! read more

Love love love this store! Popped in here after a wine tasting and lunch and fell in love with all the little corners. The shop is styled so well it makes you want to buy everything. I LOVE this store! I actually popped in here "on a whim" to see whether they had any vintage desks in stock. I found several writing desks, pedestal desks, and all in different styles from shabby chic to eclectic. My daughter discovered an adorable pink night stand with a crystal knob that I plan to return for. We also found a great french country chair that I will use with my new farm table desk as well as a sturdy and beautiful french country bench. I couldn't be happier with my finds at this store and the prices are excellent too. Since we just purchase a house, I know I will be back here for more furniture. I almost thought about not posting so I could keep this place a secret, but how can a pink polka dotted barn ever be a secret, lol!?! Last tidbit, delivery is on par with other shops in the area ($70 with Zoltan), and Donna at the front desk is super friendly with kids. This antique store is set up in a way that makes for easy browsing and is more organized than some of the other shops around. Still over priced because most of the items have been restored and refinished but still good for inspiration and a few key pieces. WIll definitely be going back to check out the barn where the bigger items are that are more "raw" and need some TLC. Those are the gems that I'm looking for! The pink and black theme is endearing and I think the allowance of separate dealers makes for a better overall selection then some of the other options around. read more

I've visited this store twice and found some really nice pieces, both times. I found the inventory to be quite good, but the prices are a mixed bag. I found some hand crafted items to be overpriced and some antiques to be quite reasonable. I guess it depends on the vendor. I found the cashier (owner?) to be quite friendly and helpful. First let me say that this store is beautiful. It is decorated with such great items and style, it truly is amazing. In fact, this was my favorite store for antiques in this area-- that is until I realized nearly half of everything in there are current items from Hobby Lobby. Don't take my word for it, pull up the Hobby Lobby website while you are in On a Whim and see for yourself. I spent over $400 in there one weekend, only to have my neighbor say "hey, I have that same lantern, it is from Hobby Lobby!" At first I chalked it up to a one time thing. But, every time I go back (because it truly is a wonderful store) I have to double check to see if what I am buying is currently at Hobby Lobby. Like seriously - not older items, current things. For example, that lantern my neighbor noticed - it was currently on the shelf at Hobby Lobby for $29.99. I paid $90 for it at On a Whim. That is not ok, not at all. read more

Been to this store numerous times and was a loyal customer! Purchased Annie Sloan paint and picked up the wrong color. Never opened it and I called to ask to exchange it. The owner Donna said " its a different vendor shop within the store" she put the Annie Sloan vendor "Terri"on who hemmed and hawed and drew a big sigh. So very rude. Not my first [similarly] bad experience with this place but because I was at the Lucketts Holiday Market and Rust & Feathers... which is right next door, I decided to pop into 'On A Whim.' It'd been so long since I'd last been in and thought perhaps they'd gotten their 'customer relations' act together since. Taped to the door of a small separate building [which is apart of the shop,] a piece of paper stating, "All Outdoor Furniture 20% Off." As this small building was filled with mostly* outdoor or patio furniture stacked on top of each other, along with the fact the sale notice was posted ON the only door into said building, I believed a wicker chair inside to be apart of the deal. So, I dug out the chair, removed the tag and brought it inside. I waited in the obnoxiously disorganized line of Holiday shoppers for almost 20 minutes to be greeted by three women sitting behind the counter. I handed them the tag and mentioned, 'I got this chair from the sale area,' which was visible through a window directly behind where they were sitting. Coarsely and unapologetically I was told, "No, that doesn't apply. That applies to outside furniture" I had to clarify, "outside furniture or furniture that is currently sitting outside???" I pointed out that the sign is ON the door leading IN, and reads: "OutDOOR" not 'outSIDE' furniture. One of the women turned to the other and said, "it's only $26." I received no apologies, not a thank you for waiting or acceptance that the sign was misleading and a waste of time. Pretty much just a 'move along.' If there had been any acknowledgement I would have certainly paid full price, it was only a couple of dollars difference. But it was the principle, the rudeness and unwillingness to even take a moment to consider their faux pas and/or honor their misleading signs. Certainly the last time I waste there. read more

Worst experience in an antique store or any store ever. I tried to give the "owner" the benefit of the doubt, perhaps having a bad day... Her first words to me were "What?!" in a very rude manner. It quickly went south from there. She pretty much kicked my friend and I out of the store calling my friend a snotty bitch (all because her jaw was hanging open as she heard how the "owner" was speaking to me, the "customer"). I was attempting to purchase approx $200+ merchandise from one of her dealers. It is a shame for her dealers that she is the person standing in their way of moving merchandise. I would not have visited this store if they didn't have Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. The owner (an older woman, I believe) is always quite unfriendly, and the furniture is mostly already refinished and very overpriced for the quality. I went today, because I needed paint and wanted to go to Lucketts Store, which is nearby. They don't accept Amex (very annoying) but since I rarely carry cash I only had enough to purchase a sample size. You guessed it: The color I needed was sold out. Ugh. They've added 2 additional antique stores in the same area since I last visited. The one towards the rear seems to be clean, spacious, carefully curated, and as we left, the woman called out "thank you for coming!" NICE TOUCH. The other store carries a knockoff Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, so I asked at the register if anyone had tried it. Does anyone in two out of three of these stores have a pulse? Seriously. read more

Great store with lots of variety! On a Whim is one of my very favorite stores to shop. They have several vendors with a good mix of style, genre and prices. To the right of the main entrance, there is a lone room that houses many vintage dresses and accessories (amazing!). The outdoor covered section is my favorite area. There you will find painted furniture, salvaged doors and windows. The owner and her granddaughter are both very friendly and I adore their companion Mr Beazley. Oh... and they carry my favorite paint in a variety of colors - Annie Sloan chalk paint. Go with some friend and ENJOY! read more

I drove two hours to purchase the AS chalk paint and look for other goodies. I was so turned off by who appeared to be the owner that I only bought the paint { I wouldnt even of done that if i knew somewhere else that had it...and now i do!!}. Maybe the regular customers are treated better.... I live only a mile from this antique/nick nack store and had never been there in 12 years until yesterday. I will never go back. Bought a small wooden container for a faux plant I have and discovered the plant didn't fit. Took it back and was told by the owner they have a no return policy. What retailer does that anymore in this day and age?! Very unjust, unfriendly policy that will not win repeat customers. The owner is quite unfriendly, which has been mentioned several times by others. I wouldn't waste my time shopping here simply because of that. I'd just like to say that I was a customer before becoming a dealer at the shop. I was always treated great and I found the shop very interesting with a variety of vintage and newer things. Its very hard for shops with multiple dealers to keep the same "look" throughout the shop. The owner works with everyone to try to keep a certain "look" that appeals to most shoppers. As far as prices we all know that furniture can be very expensive and what you buy that's new isn't even real wood! The vintage 60's & 70's furniture is at least real wood that has been kept from the landfills. Its now considered "Green" to recycle furniture. read more

Really the shop is cute, they have really done some nice things with old stuff. But mixed in with all of that is stuff from Ikea, Pottery Barn, Lenox, Michaels, Home Goods etc. I kept having to tell my friends to put it down, you don't want to pay 10 bucks for something you can get that doesn't have dust on it down the street for 5! We had a large group there (8) and everyone bought something but me, the assumed owner was quite rude. Apparently it was close to the time the shop was to close, the lady walked around us, not explaining herself and started turning off all the lights, ignoring us completely and not even saying, sorry we are going to be closing soon. How strange! After we got the hint, we paid for everything and went outside to take a group pic, we had family visiting from FL. Quickly I knocked on the window and asked the lady if she could help us with a picture. Shockingly she looked up and said in a not so nice way, "We are closed and I have things to do...blah blah blah" I turned and ignored the rest of her rant.
