Mike was great! I needed an all-rounder wetsuit, and after looking at the choices in stock and asking a couple questions, he recommended the perfect suit. Tried it on, fit pretty perfect. We rented a wetsuit for our 11-year-old while traveling and Kelly was incredibly helpful and even gave us a break on the price since the timing for getting back from Santa Cruz would not allow us to return the wetsuit within 24 hours. This little shop in Monterey is great. When my son needed a new pair of shoes fast, we stopped by here. With the help of a wonderful sale associate, my son tried on about a dozen pairs of shoes and ended up with the most comfortable pair of UGGS. While he looked at footwear, I looked at the women's clothing and found the cutest hoodie. There was a good selection of men's and women's apparel here. All the workers from the owner to the intern were very knowledgeable & extremely helpful. I spent a lot of time in this store trying on about 10 Women's and juniors wetsuits to find the perfect fit & design. Several of the workers game me lots of very useful tips. They were all so personable. It's very rare to find such genuine retail employees and I am so thankful for their help. The store has lots of brands and styles for wetsuits. Compared to online prices for wetsuits they are the same, but at the shop you can try them on and you don't have to pay shipping. There's also a section for discounted used wetsuits in great condition. Compared to the surf stores in Santa Cruz, this store has more accessories, inventory, brands & options. They also offer rentals and you can walk right out to the beach. During this pandemic all employees were wearing masks, everything was clean, the store doors were open and we were allowed to try on items in the fitting rooms. There is also lots of free street parking. Lots of other walkable shops and a vegan Mexican restaurant nearby. ... after we bought wetsuits and shoes we went boogie boarding in the evening and were so excited that for the first time we could go in the water without feeling cold at all. We have rented equipment twice from On the Beach. Everyone we dealt with was kind and patient and explained proper usage. We got the perfect wetsuits and equipment, my kids were in the freezing ocean all day! Our second rental included a skim board. My son promptly lost the board in the ocean. He was distraught. When we talked to the shop, they were kind and gracious. They said if someone turns in the board, we will get our money back. It was our mistake, and my son was so upset. Recently purchased a long awaited Dogtown longboard deck in Santa Cruz and took it to On The Beach to have trucks, grip and wheels put on. Clint was incredibly helpful, knowledgeable, and fast. I had about 20 minutes to browse with my wife before my board was complete and ready to ride. My son went to Monterey for Thanksgiving, he went to On The Beach Surf Shop the following day on Friday. He did some shopping for himself, and surprised me with some birthday presents from here. He gave them to me once he got back home, two of the clothing items or one size too small. I called on Monday morning to see if they had size 2 XL and a jacket and a T-shirt with the idea of exchanging. They had the jacket which was awesome. Unfortunately, the T-shirt brand doesn't make XXL in the T-shirt that I had. The Customer Service on the phone was genuinely very friendly, helpful and professional. There are more than happy to hold the merchandise or allow me to ship in my two items, and once received, would ship out the two on hold. I chose to drive down and wasn't sure if I'd go down on Tuesday or Wednesday. They were so reassuring and chill and said no worries in essence it'll be here on hold for you that made me feel very confident and reassured and not stressed about how long they would hold these items that I knew that I wanted. I just needed to get there to exchange them so I'm very grateful for the excellent helpful customer service centric culture that they have there. I called Tuesday morning and spoke with Clint. He's the store manager. He's a super nice guy very professional easy-going just has an overall great demeanor. I told him I might be coming that day possibly Wednesday and he was so reassuring. I also have some questions about the items I had on hold mainly the T-shirt because I decided if they didn't have the size I needed then I can get the size that my son wanted so he could have a cool T-shirt.lol. Clinton was so reassuring and said no worries. Look forward to meeting you and we're just super friendly and awesome. I ended up not going down that evening and the next morning I called and got Josh to update them that I was driving down on Wednesday and to confirm my stuff was on hold it was in again more reassurance. He was super friendly and helpful with a few questions I had and I just wanted to update them that I was going to be later than I had originally said that morning since they holding few items for exchange and super friendly and customer service centric. These are my takeaways from the phone calls with Clint and Josh both. When I got to the store, I was greeted with a genuine, friendly welcome. I ask for Josh. He was doing a task and unavailable and I got help from Clint and just like on the phone, he was super friendly, very genuine it's just who he is and he's bringing that into the workplace for on the beach surf shop. The overall culture in the store in addition to the individual employees that work there has a great vibe, a team, camaraderie energy, I observed, while being in the store. So Clint helped me initially and then went on lunch, and Josh helped me, while at the store, I asked my son if he wanted anything via text and he said "oh there are these pants that I saw but I didn't buy them". He wasn't sure the exact brand he didn't have pictures, so this began a hunt, they took the time to look in the computer to see which two pants he did buy on his previous visit Friday and what size because I didn't know and my son was busy and couldn't talk on the phone so I sent pics of possible pants, doing this was made possible because of the efforts of Josh helping me taking bits of information both known and probable to figure out which pants he'd seen week before and wanted like the hybrid tech pants of which there were several types. Lol. My son did like the olive green but again communication was very limited because he was busy but I was determined to make the best informed possible choice of the right hybrid, technical pants that he wanted. Josh was helping me figure this out and he was super patient, kind and helpful just a rockstar helping me try to figure this pants size thing out. . I got to know him a little more about him, shared a little about my son and he remembered helping my son the previous Friday. I have to say Josh is a very impressive young man in general and as an employee. He shared some of his story and he has definitely persevered and accomplished a lot to get where he's at and he brings that into the workplace for the customer base, we are lucky to have an awesome person like Josh and also Clint the manager working at On the Beach Surf Shop. They contribute greatly to excellent store culture. Sooo I love my jacket lol, I found out from Josh that he remembered helping my son & he asked Josh for cool jacket ideas and Josh had recommended the jacket I got which I love, thanx for your collaborative efforts which yielded great results. . read more

We went in to just look and learn about skateboards, etc. Dillion graciously taught us the difference in boards, trucks, bearings, etc. asked a lot of questions about how and where our son would be riding. We found him very knowledgeable and helpful. Gave us the information on the advantages of the different type of equipment. This helped us make an informed decision. So much so that we decided to purchase everything now instead of waiting for his birthday. It's rare to receive that kind of service from a store these days! Had a really wonderful experience returning to this store when I was in the area with my mom for a little Monterey getaway. I love this store. Was greeted by the female employee (Evette? Yvette?) who helped me with my purchases and set me up with a dressing room. She was really friendly and available for great customer service. Got some cute outfits for the warmer seasons. Spent a little more than expected but got some great deals on quality clothing. They even gave me a nice and soft "On the Surf" free t-shirt because I earned enough points from my purchase. My boyfriend enjoyed that shirt more than the "Santa Cruz" logo shirt lol. My mom found some really soft sweats as well. Be careful with parking on the street. We spent some time shopping and trying on clothes so went over the limit. I think if you park across the street in CVS you can park for a few hours? We've been shopping here since our kids were little- wetsuits, skim boards, clothing, etc. The staff is always great, and we always appreciated Kelly's involvement with the local JG program. I recently brought in my old snowboard to have some new bindings put on and the board tuned up for my daughter. Kelly reached out to let me know that the binding attachment piece that I brought in wasn't the right one, but that he happened to have the right one in the shop and used his at no charge.
