Traveling back from San Angelo, we stopped in and noticed a few cars parked out front and the door open. Upon entering, I was told they were actually closed but were just working on an expansion. These people were so incredibly nice. When she realized all of the local places were closed, she offered to heat some quiche she had from her freezer. It was, hands down, the best quiche we have ever had! And how very nice to feed a couple of hungry travelers! We will stop here anytime we can. Great food, amazing people!! What a perfect place in the middle of the drive up through Texas. The people were really nice and the food was very homemade. It was all at a very reasonable price. The quiche was small but had a wonderful flavor .. went for the bacon. A side of fruit and a green salad accompanied the quiche. Get the poppy seed dressing for the fruit.. it was amazing. On a snowy day in the small town of Eden, almost every restaurant and business was closed. Thankfully we found this llittle restaurant in the back of a building, facing a park. It was the only pllace around with cars in front, a good sign. Inside it was cute, clean, colorful and decorated with antique looking signs. It was order at the counter and I ordered the lunch special of half a chicken salad sandwich with the enchilada soup. My husband got the King ranch chicken casserole. There were containers of delicious looking single homemade pie slices, we got pecan and cherry. Lunch was served quickly, and everything we got was wonderful and freshly made. My sandwich was on a soft homemade biscuit and the soup was perfectly made and satisfying. Husband loved the chicken casserole, hearty and flavorful. The ladies working there were so friendly and courteous, a perfect example of Texas hospitality. I'm sure glad we didn't miss this gem of a place on our trip through Eden. read more

That to say, what a gem to find On the Square Bakery & Deli open when I was passing by and craving something sweet. The pie window is filled with a variety of pies and beckons you in the door. The pecan did not disappoint. In fact, I got one slice and when I passed back through, I stopped in again and grabbed a whole one to share with my family. What a gem. Wish I had found it sooner...but glad I did. Make the trip from Midland to hill country at least once a month. Now I will time it to catch them open (or call Dana) Had quiche (it was very light and fluffy) and taco soup on way there. Picked up a frozen green beef enchilada casserole (perfect evening meal for us) and an amazing chocolate sheet cake to go. Had to load up on frozen casseroles on the way home along with a chicken sandwich and fresh chicken Cobb Salad with homemade poppyseed dressing--both were excellent! The Food was outstanding! The young gal that took our order was sweet and very polite. The older woman in the kitchen however should work on her attitude. She was very rude and curt with the one taking orders. As a customer we felt embarrassed for the young gal. Stopped for lunch at this special little Cafe in Eden, TX that serves home cooking at its finest. The building where this cafe is very old as it screams of primitive country simplicity with pioneer wooden tables and array of chairs the dining area to their kitchen utensils of yesteryears. The lady chef and baker busy in the kitchen preparing meals that had been ordered for lunch as she directed staff on how to set up each serving. Order at the counter and they bring your food to your table. I ordered the quiche with sausage, sides were fruit salad and garden salad that were perfect balance. The quiche is so recommended and another special that day was chicken spaghetti that seemed to be popular by folks ordering. They have Desserts like thick brownie or cherrie pies all made from scratch. She shares how much she enjoys the old things and shares her decor throughout the cafe even in the bathroom is an old sink with a wringer as my grandma would use to remove water from washed clothes before hanging them on the clothes line. Pick up a couple of pies every time I go through Eden on my way home from work. Peach and chocolate are so delicious! But next time, I need to branch out and try buttermilk and pecan. My husband likes the cinnamon rolls so I try to get those for him too. Bought their egg salad sandwich to take with us one time, and it was so fresh in a fresh sourdough bun, we almost had to stop and eat it with a fork.
