Lots of provided recreational toys- horseshoes, ladder golf, cornhole, sport balls. Kayaks for rent. Super friendly staff! You can see the lake from sites 22, 24 and 26 for sure, as I am sure others. The downsides for us- dirt road for 1 mile leading in the state park leading into campground. Dirt road in the campground. The flies were BAD during setup of our popup. We had to get fly paper amid swatters to take care of the 30+ in our camper. We've never camped with so many flies. FYI- electrical boxes are pretty far on some sites, bring extension. Standard 120 outlets, bring a converter if you have a 30 amp cord. 50 amps? No idea, at least on site 24 and 26. There are 2 showers men and 2 showers for women. With 70+ sites, that might be a problem during busy weekends. Hasn't been an issue for us during the week. We will see hot the weekend goes. The beach is far from the campground (2 miles ish)- you'll need to drive or bike.

She then asked about my recreation passport which of course I have. When I told her to check my license plate for it, she then told me I had to buy a day pass. This devolved into I didn't have to have a day pass, but she didn't like me driving through the campground. No worries as I will not ever be back. I'm not really a fan of control freak rangers. As a side note we also scouted nearby Onaway park and found some nice sites. I've also had no issues at other campgrounds with such a ranger so be aware if you are in the area to avoid this one.

We visited Hoeft State Park for the first time last weekend. It wasn't our favorite state park we…read morehave visited but it was still very nice. The sites are very small and they are not very level. We were on site 72 and we had to move our tent three different times to get it staked into the ground. The site was very unlevel and rocky. There are a handful of nice sites throughout the park but it felt very crowded because the sites are so small and everyone is so close together. They do have a bathhouse with showers and toilets. They do not have an updated shower house but it did the job. The staff were very friendly. It was a quiet park because it is so secluded. It is right along the shore of Lake Huron. There is beach access. The water was warm in mid July. The cell service is spotty if you have AT&T. I don't think we would camp here again but we were glad to visit and check it off our list!

I grew up on Lake Erie and lived on Lake Ontario for a little while, so I'm not used to seeing such bright blue-green water at a Great Lake. (Erie & Ontario are very brown) Aside from a perfect Lake Huron experience, this is just a nice park in general. Plenty of places for kids to play (including playgrounds), hiking trails, and other activities. All the facilities are in acceptable conditions and there weren't very many people there when we were, which made it feel like we had the park to ourselves (on a Sunday!)... There is a fee to get in. The ranger told us we could pay $9 and have access to ALL Michigan state parks, which of course we did.

I learned many new skills, how to be (somewhat) self sufficient & (most importantly) established lifelong friendships. 18 years later (yet feels like I was siting around the campfire yesterday) it's time to start looking into overnight camps for my own kids. I heard Liz, who has now taken over camp from her father, is going to be in the North Shore giving a presentation. While I wasn't ready to send my daughter away quite yet, figure I could start the brainwashing since I can't imagine sending my kids to any other camp than this one. I drag my very reluctant 7 year old daughter there who tells me in the car "I'm not going. Walden is your dream, mom...not mine." However, 5 minutes within Liz's presentation she tells me she's going for the entire summer and has already listed out all her activities...lake swimming, horseback riding, nature. She also informs me she won't be showering the entire time. Lovely...that part not part of my "dream" The brainwashing worked so well that she insists on going to Walden this summer. However, I still think she's too young so compromise by saying we'll make the drive up to camp so she can see it and we can spend a few days in Northern Michigan. We also conveniently time our visit with when a few of my lifelong camp friends will be picking up their older kids from the 2 week session. After a 7+ hour drive from Chicago to Northern Michigan with a 7 year old in tow I begin to wonder if the trip was really worth it. However, within minutes of stepping onto camp grounds I realize it was so worth it. Camp looks more beautiful than ever (hello new Mess Hall!). I felt like I was in a time warp when I saw that all the Area Heads (Waterfront, Athletics, Horseback Riding, etc) are STILL there. And these people don't seem to age...perhaps I need to start drinking Cheboygan water? And everyone was so smiley and friendly...both staff and campers. Like my future campers there are so many 2nd generation campers there living the same dream their parents lived many years ago. And every camper or counselor we chatted with seemed to be on their 6th, 7 are so many 2nd generation campers are there. My friends kids who we picked up were all smiles after their first Walden experience. My daughter loved visiting camp even more than she loved Liz's presentation. We ran into Liz within minutes and she was extremely welcoming and really made the effort to chat with Devon and get to know her...and her husband, Scott, was very friendly as well. She was also in awe of all the (messy) cabins and made me take pictures of all the cool stuffed animal holders, pillows etc that she wanted to bring to camp when she was lucky enough to attend as a camper. She even revised her previously made schedule to include waterskiing and tubing after watching the fun. One of things I love about walden is that you get to make your own activity schedule so you can do all the things that you really love to do! I also love that it's not overly competitive when it comes to sports and activities so everyone feels like a winner at camp...I appreciated that philosophy as a camper and even more as a parent of future campers. They are very flexible with the length of camp- perhaps more flexible than when I was a camper. Campers have the option of staying 2,4, 6 or 7 weeks. And they even offer a mini mini 3 day camp for their youngest campers, which I really hope they continue to offer since I think it's a great way to get a taste of Walden..and have heard from others who have sent their kids that it's a really well run program (just like the rest of their programs). So excited for my future campers to make memories at this magical place during future summers! As the saying goes...Walden Days. Walden Nights...there's nothing to do back in the city.

Windows were closed up and no air conditioning running on a hot summer's day. There is 1 small window air conditioner for the entire place. Besides the heat, the first thing you notice is the gross, mildewy smell when you walk in the front door. Smells like Grandma's attic. Plus, black mold all around the bathtub. The Master Bedroom bed felt like a concrete slab. And what they don't show you on the website is that 3 out of 4 beds are actually in an attached garage & literally placed next to the Inn's storage area of vacuum cleaners, towels etc. Speaking of supplies, they don't even supply toilet paper. At least they were kind enough to supply a fly swatter, so you could swat at all the flying insects landing on you while you're trying to sleep in a garage. Then the cleaning lady busts in the cottage the next morning to do loads of laundry during your stay. We were scheduled to stay 2 nights but we couldn't handle 1 more night and chose to stay at another hotel. If you make the mistake of staying at this place, BYOTP (bring your own toilet paper) and be prepared for a rough night ahead. Before writing this review I brought my concerns to the hotel owner. She was rudely dismissive and refused to refund us for the extra night.

We were in town for a family memorial service, and she was very patient and helpful despite some changes in our reservation. Really a lovely spot. The lake is right out your door and the hummingbirds came to greet us many times at the feeders. Highly recommended! The only reason why we didn't give five stars was that we dealt with quite a bit of flies during two days of our stay, though folks in town said that that was common for the area.

If you pay to play the big course you get the par three for free. This is a classic Michigan course car out of a beautiful forest.
