WARNING - Bed Bugs in Duplex 10 at Jacks Landing…read more I want to start by saying I have stayed at Jacks every year for the past 22 years and have always enjoyed our vacations until this year. We mostly stayed in Duplex 10 but have also stayed at the waterfront cabins and Anglers Hideaway. This year we stayed the week of July 6th in Duplex 10. We discovered a bed bug issue towards the end of the week. We started getting red bite marks and waking up to find blood on the sheets. Upon further inspection we discovered live bed bugs and a lot of black/red stains on the box springs of all three beds and evidence on the futon. We immediately notified the management and were extremely disappointed in the response. They said they always clean the rooms and have never seen evidence of bed bugs. The offered us a $150 gift certificate for next year and told us one of the managers was going to the store to get "stuff" to clean it up right away. When we pushed for a full refund they said "they don't know where they came from" insinuating that we brought them with us. This is a very big infestation and not hard to find once we looked closer. All four people who stayed in the cabin had upwards of 50+ bites appear once we were home and started looking closer. We kick ourselves for not inspecting the bed upon arrival but after 22 years you tend to trust a place. I understand that these things happen but the response from the manager was the worst part. She said she had them before and it was not a big deal to get rid of them. They insinuated we brought them. Worst of all I believe they are going to try to "clean" it themselves. From what I read (and I have not read a lot) bed bugs are difficult to eliminate, and my guess is they will continue to be a problem at Jacks. I want to raise awareness to all potential guests at Jack that bed bugs were in Duplex 10 to be very cautious if staying at Jacks Landing

Elk Viewing tour and dinner…read more We had no idea what to really expect, but had high hopes for a nice evening. Thunderbay Resort (TBR, for short) exceeded all expectations! We all seated in the Belgian Horse drawn carriages and took off on time for a 60 minute tour over the river and through the woods to dinner. We saw a lot of elk , too. No, these are not wild elk, but they are not domesticated, either. TBR strives to let them thrive as much as possible in a wild atmosphere, but they would never be able to bait them to be in viewing range for the guests if they weren't considered livestock. They openly explain this on the tour. This is not a zoo, folks, you are really in the forests and really viewing some majestic animals in their natural environment. TBR doesn't even intervene with medical assistance as they really let nature do it's thing. Jack (owner of TBR and dad of the chef, Spencer) was our guide. He educated us on the Elk, their history in MI, and of the resort. It was a clear afternoon in the low 30's and after dinner, we all got to experience the clear, dark, star-filled sky in the low 20's. BLANKETS PROVIDED! After dinner's ride was only 15 minutes or so back to the parking lot: A perfect way to cap off the dinner. Oh yeah.. dinner... Fantastic dinner cooked on two antique, wood-fired oven ranges in a beautiful cabin/eating hall decked out in taxidermy and country charm. This is a family run business and worked by the family. They meal is the same one they served when they started this out 30+ years ago. Nothing's changed except the date and building you eat in (it's way bigger now, and has indoor plumbing). The bathrooms are like museums, too. Not just clean, but tons of historical artifacts and knick-knacks to look at. The dinner wine choices are two reds and a white. They are OK. They serve a couple different appetizer wines with your first course and an ice wine with dessert. These were surprisingly good! If you don't want wine, there are soft drinks available and a cash bar for other drinks. This is MI wine, so if you approach it with that in mind, they are pretty good. In all, it's about a 4-4.5 hour experience. Nope, it's not cheap, but you are getting an amazing dinner and magical evening worth every penny. The only thing better would have been falling snow :-) But the stars up here in northeast MI are vivid since you are in the middle of the woods with no close cities anywhere near, so that was also part of the magic.

It's the kind of serenity your spirit needs, A place that's nostalgic, a throw back in time. At Shaginapi your portals that keep you connected to social obligations and the daily grind are pretty much just used only when your forced to take a trip into town to stock your vintage fridge with dairy products (about 30 minutes away) Now I have to admit yes I would rather spend a few weeks with a little more tangible benefits. I mean lets be realistic, who doesn't enjoy a walking distant to the spa or a chilled tall drink with a fancy umbrella served by the "Beautiful People" But I also would like to believe that Nature is good for you, Right? The new room was spacious, clean and with a window air conditioner unit that was quiet plus did not take up room space. I understand the resort had extremely limited availability. The bathroom is unbelievably outdated and tiny. You hear the conversations of the rooms next to you along with all the noise in the hall. The rooms are far from the Main office. It is a bit of a trek over there from the ship crossings, but they handle the baggage, so you just need to walk down there. This is actually a resort, not just a hotel - but we didn't take advantage of a lot of that. I will say, it was a little trek between Main and Straight lodges for our group, since we had to be in Straights with the dogs, but otherwise we really enjoyed it. The pizza place in the main lodge was GREAT - really surprising. Staff was sooo nice to both us and our pups throughout our visit. Nice little store with ice cream and alcoholic drinks to supplement the ice cream. Seems a lot of reviews focused on the cost, which was high, but unfortunately that's just the market on this island. We really enjoyed our stay here - and it was a huge perk to be able to have our pups with us.

It always sucks. This last trip, on our second day, we left after taking almost 3 hours for 6 holes. We left after just those 6 holes. I love the courses, but I doubt I will ever play there again. Even on "good" days it's nearly 6 hours for as round. What a shame. I'm sure as long as they fill their tee sheets, they will never have their rangers do anything to speed up pace of play.

It was a great choice! This was a Tuesday night in February, so we were able to get a very good price on a double queen suite. Room was clean, comfortable and no issues. We had planned to go skiing Tuesday evening but ended up at the pool with our kids. The main lodge has a decent size pool that starts indoors and continues outdoors. There is an indoor hot tub and an outdoor hot tub. Also there are two Saunas. The kids were enjoying themselves so much we didn't even get to go skiing! On Wednesday we got breakfast at the top of the hill. We have eaten here before and it's always been good. After breakfast we got our gear and headed to the slopes. Treetops isn't a huge hill, but for the value midweek and 3 lifts, it's was a great time. We got started right at 10am and skied until about 4pm before heading home. There was almost no traffic and it was non stop skiing. The kids loved it as well and really enjoyed the beginners terrain park they built.

Technically a "rustic" venue, you'll be hard pressed to not feel showered in elegance throughout. As you drive into the resort, you'll first notice a picture perfect sign and vignette. Then, the layout for the outdoor ceremony right in front of the lake was dreamy (the folding chairs are never comfy, though, ha!) from the floral trellis to the sound system. Everyone moved into a deluxe tent for appetizers and cocktail party. It's well heated and sturdy enough to forget it's a tent. Then we moved into the building for the reception. The cabin is gorgeous - outdoorsy touches and decor abound. It's heaven for Instagram updates (actually, the whole resort is). When the sun sets, the light pouring in makes it somewhat challenging to stay cool but the light blast didn't last long. The indoor bar/lounge between the tent and building is a nice addition for the evening. There is a very small ladies restroom and if it's the only one, they could use another. Then it was back to the tent for the after party. (This was also the place for the party the night before.) Loved Sojourn so much!

These little cottages are perfect for a family stay for a week or five (I wish). It's a beautiful spot right in the middle of the Les Cheneaux Islands and you have a beautiful view of the water from inside your cottage and on the deck. There' a boat dock where you are free to keep your boat if you bring one, or you can just fish off the end like some of the little kids have been doing this week. They have a makeshift little beach area with about six plastic Adirondack chairs and I'm telling you, these kids staying here can't get enough of that sand. Right next to that area they have five kayaks ready to go- my cousins and I take full advantage of these every time we stay. Every cottage's deck has some of their own Adirondack chairs which we take from one to the other since we stay in two cottages right next to each other for the week. There's also a charcoal grill at each one which, again, we take full advantage of throughout the week. There's a fire pit off to the side of the cottages which I a great way to spend the evenings. Inside the cottages- fully stocked with dishes, towels, blankets, etc. There's free wifi and cable in each one. Plenty of outlets if you're worried about charging electronics or if you (like my mom) will be working at any point during your stay. The kitchen has a fridge, freezer, stove, oven, and microwave- so everything you could need to make any meal you desire. The owners of this place are incredible. Kirstin an Jason are two of nicest people we've met and they really care about everyone here and making sure you enjoy your stay. They live in a house right on the same property so they're almost always around. Both of them drop in periodically to make sure you're enjoying your time and that there's nothing you need from them. They own the North Coast Company in Hessel now which is an ice cream, fudge, and coffee shop inside the showroom of E.J. Mertaugh Boat Works. This was the first Chris Craft dealership in America, for those of you who enjoy boats. This part of Michigan is simply incredible. It's beautiful and quiet with plenty of outdoor activity going on. You're only a little bit away from Mackinac Island, the Soo Locks in Sault Ste Marie, and Tahquamenon Fall- all excellent day trips during your stay. I would highly recommend staying at Ford's Cottages to anyone. You jut can't go wrong here!
