You don't get too many views and the campgrounds are all open and organized into 3-4 loops that you can easily see and access from wherever you are by foot or car within the campgrounds and to one side they are all bordered by a line of trees that have walkways cutting through them at each loop to the beach and shore of Lake Charlevoix! Because of this, you can typically see the lake through the trees, but no campsite has direct access or prime views of the lake all that much, so no stress about there being a better campsite closer to the lake over a different one. Given that I camped here in early June, the weather was still a bit rainy, so we didn't get to spend too much time on the beach given that every time we did, it would start sprinkling. We tried a couple of the hikes, but they were all pretty muddy and one in particular was boggy and my friend's foot sank in deep past her knee! So just a few things to watch out for if you've gotten some rain leading up to your camping trip here. Other than that, there is plenty of great beaches here for laying out if the weather allows, plus Lake Charlevoix is wonderful for taking the boats out and they have a boat launch at a different spot within the park. It's wonderful for all the activities with the whole family and the furry family members as well! We had a great time even with the rain!

Nestled on Lake Charlevoix this state park was a toss-up when we were choosing. Sleeping Bear Dunes was packed and we were in search of accommodations to reserve so we didn't have to mess around. We opted to come to Young State Park. It turned out to be a diamond in the rough and a perfect place for us to spend our first nights on the escape! Our campsite was spot on, especially having chosen the site without having been there before. It wasn't secluded but it was perfect considering it was the Fourth of July weekend.It was also dog friendly and had some really cool well marked and unmarked trails. Some of the trails were a bit muddy and some were just perfect. There was one trail though that was the best and led us to the perfect view of Lake Charlevoix. There we enjoyed a day of chilling on the beach and watching our mutt romp around. This was truly the biggest highlight and I'd come back for this access alone, time and again. The sunset, the fires and the hustle and bustle of the Charlevoix area all made for a great time. We ventured into town and perused the scene with our pup as well as ventured around the surrounding area to soak up the sites. This State Park was clean and an enjoyable stay for us! Get here, relax and enjoy! Nuff' said!

Campsites have a nice tree canopy providing good shade and privacy. A few full hook up sites but these don't have many trees, so they aren't as private. If you live in Northern Michigan it is an easy get away. The staff is very nice and will do there best to accommodate you and your camper.

This was our first and last stay at Trailside Campground…read more We rented Cabin #3, which is only about 25 yards from the pavilion. It was Friday, July 24, and there were no scheduled concerts or events. Around 5 or 6 people, including the owner, were partying in the pavilion with extremely loud music, strobe lights, and a disco ball until the early morning hours. The cheap curtains in the cabin did nothing to block the flashing lights. At about 1:40 a.m., I politely walked over and asked if they could just turn the music down a little. I never asked them to shut it off--I simply wanted it lowered enough that we could get some sleep. The owner's response was unbelievable. He appeared to be intoxicated and immediately came storming toward me yelling, "Hey! Hey! Hey!" He then told me, "This isn't a KOA or a family campground. This is going to go on until 3 or 4 in the morning," and said he'd give me a refund. He wasn't calm or respectful--he was aggressive and confrontational over a simple, reasonable request. The next morning, another camper stopped me in the bathroom and said she felt bad for how the owner spoke to me. She told me another camper was so upset after witnessing it that he left the pavilion. She also mentioned the owner had been drinking all day because they were celebrating the one-year anniversary of buying the campground. We weren't the only people bothered by the noise. Campers across from us were complaining too. If your campground isn't family-friendly and you plan on having loud parties until 3 or 4 in the morning, that's your choice. But be upfront about it so guests know what they're paying for. More importantly, don't treat paying customers with disrespect when they make a polite request. Customer service starts at the top, and unfortunately our experience with the owner ensured we'll never be back.

This campground is located outside of town, and is privately owned and sits on the Cheboygan River…read morewith a renovated dock and boat access, lots of wildlife and hiking and walking trails. Husband and wife caregivers, they live in a beautiful 5th wheel and we had the pleasure of getting to camp next to them. Very sweet and friendly couple who soon will be headed down to Florida for the winter. Park is so well maintained by them, and her hub is always on his tractor cutting the lawn or at work doing something. Bathroom's and showers spotless. Nice sites and each has a nice picnic table and fire pit, firewood sold at the office. We had a pull through site, very accommodating, good water pressure. Tent camping, swing set for the young ones. There is a restaurant across the highway which was very good. Quiet place with lots of mature trees for shade. Very close to town, so convenient. About a 25 min drive to Mackinaw City and the bridge, make a day of taking a boat ride to Mackinaw Island. We enjoyed our stay at this great campground and recommend coming here. We will return!! We've been in here a few times, and they can handle longer trailers (with reservation) and offer full hook-up sites that are well maintained. The owner lives on site and is very helpful and knowledgeable of the area and local businesses, and it's just a short distance from town. We always look forward to our trips there, and are planning our next chance to go back.

Overall this was a very nice campground. There are two things that causes me to only give 4 stars…read more First was backing onto the sought was difficult due to the slope at the road. We ended up bending one of our front stabilizers because of the angles. We saw another camper struggle with the same issue. The other thing was getting to it. You have to drive on dirt roads for quite a distance. They really have no control over the roads, but it is something to consider. The good though was that it was clean, nicely spaced, and quiet.

We love that we can use the kayaks and the canoe or the pontoon, and watching the bald eagles that live on the lake is majestic to say the very least. Our kids love the playground on site and we love the friendly atmosphere while we're here! It's the perfect distance from Mackinaw and we love driving into the city for the day. Our summers won't be complete without a stay here. Be sure to call and book early, it fills up fast and the regulars get their spots booked an entire year in advance.

The location of this resort is nice. However the cabins and furnishings are outdated and poorly…read moremaintained. There was a piece of plywood between the mattress and box spring. I guess this was suppose to add support to the outdated furnishings. The refrigerator had rust all over it. Talk about losing your appetite. The shower was the size of a port a pot. The screens did not fit properly. And when you are surrounded by trees and water, and you don't have properly fitting screens, you'll have insects and bugs. Speaking of which, the light in our kitchen was covered with bugs that gravitated to the fixture. Then at night when we turned the bedroom light on and bugs came out onto the bed that was it. My wife said "Time to go".
