Once Upon a Child is a cute, little shop that has a great selection of kids clothing, shoes, and accessories. They also offer the option to bring in gently used children's items you no longer have use for and will pay you in cash or store credit. I highly recommend taking the store credit option because your money will go farther. We were able to clear some space of our daughter's old items and were able to leave with a wonderful winter jacket that she will be able to use for a while. The people told me give them 40 minutes. I waited a whole 40 minutes they didn't buy one item from my basket told me the clothes were stained. But the whole entire time the basket was never touched. First time in this store and I nearly lost my mind. So many bargains, so many racks, so many shoes, Toys, outerwear, baby gear/equipment. I was shopping nearby when the baby walkers and strollers outside the store caught my attention. Having a new 4 month old grandson, I thought a little peruse couldn't hurt. I ended up purchasing a baby saucer! It was nearly new and very clean. The store was filled with people and with things to buy. The employees were helpful and the racks were full. It's obvious that many people shop this location to buy and sell. I don't know who came up with this idea but it's a very clever one. Kids grow very quickly and parenting can become quite expensive. I went in yesterday 10/20/22 and the woman at the buy counter was nothing short of amazing ! I believe she said her name was Amber? But I could be absolutely wrong. she offered me a screwdriver to put my toddler beds back together and even found a matching screw when I realized I miss placed one of ours. she even gave me her own hair tie when I was getting overheated and stressed because my twins were acting like Donnie from the Wild Thornberries. the whole thing was a great experience and I'm pleased with what I was offered for what I brought in to sell. The only issue I had was I had hoped to find winter coats for my kids and there wasn't much of a selection (either that or they're all lumped together on a rack and I just missed it). I don't see buying baby clothes from Once Upon A Child as much of a bargain; really everything in this glorified Goodwill is overpriced in my opinion. However this doesn't stop the herds of mom's and their children from being in here. I went in with my wife and daughter and immediately regretted my decision. My anxiety level shot through the roof with all the mom's shopping as if it was a Black Friday sale or something. They were grabbing, tearing, pushing, shoving, and everything to get a bargain. This is the absolute worst store- the inside is disgusting, who would want to shop for there childrens items when the floors are GROSS and nothing is organized. This place is kind of like falling down the rabbit hole. Upon entering, the staff members at the front door just kind of glared at me and then begin aggressively laying down the RULES, of which I apparently was breaking in some way. They were unprofessional and awkward and I was especially amazed that they would be so hostile to their customers. The store was packed and a little overwhelming with too many items crammed together...I guess sales are down...and it smelled like dirty feet in some areas. Maybe because of the used shoes? I ended up buying some hair bows. There was nothing there that enticed me to return. Maybe it would help Once Upon a Child to remember that they are not Macy's, but are selling old used children's clothes. And it doesn't cost anything to be nice. read more

I had a bunch of baby/toddler clothes that I had been unable to sell at a garage sale but thought I would try Once Upon a Child. The whole experience was horrific and certainly not worth the gas to drive there. Everyone there was unfriendly and seemed as though as I was completely putting them out by asking them to look through my clothes (which is their whole business model: buying used clothes and reselling them). I had good clothes, clean with no stains; however, after being required to return four hours later (unless I wanted a store credit instead of cash), they hardly took anything we dropped off and were offered just a tad more than $10. Totally not worth the time it took to take the clothes off the hangers and drive up there from Mt Pleasant. If you have old clothes to get rid of, I'd recommend you donate them somewhere or take them to Goodwill. At least maybe someone who needs them will get them ... unless, that is, you want to be treated rudely to get very little money. read more

Dear Owner, The outfits with the tags still attached were not onesies - they were coordinating outfits. Sold by your store with stains and tried to return / exchange and you would not do either for me. The puzzle was taped and sealed to imply completeness. I can understand that you have a business to run and make a living. But being rude during the process is not going to help you any. Sometimes, being pleasant is all that is needed... it's Customer service - comes with the territory. I worked in fast paced, hard core airline business - one flight cancellation and it's an instant nightmare - I know all about being polite regardless of the situation. It is possible. My previous Post: Just moved from California and one of the women at church told me to check out Once Upon a Child for kids clothes. She even bought me clothes from there for my new born baby. She said I could easily exchange them if need be. My experience: horrible! I tried to exchange the clothes and they wouldn't - even with their tags still attached! They said they would buy them back. Guess what - they didn't even buy it back because there was a slight stain! What?! I didn't even use them! And they were super rude about the whole bit! What's worse is we spent money there too... My little 2 year old son is super in to Thomas Puzzles - so we bought one from the store for a buck. Good deal - it was wrapped up and gave the illusion that all parts would be there... and NOT SURPRISED - one piece was missing and made my son super sad. We like to go there for dress-up clothes for my daughter and accessories, like hair bows. I had to return some items that were gifts (duplicates of things we already had). No big right? The selection is great- especially the shoes- they have so many bins of shoes and many of them are in great condition. -Great clothes selections, all color/size sorted easily. -A separate section of dress clothes and school uniform clothes. -The toys are also aplenty! -Baby gear -Nursery decoration packages. Several of them were speaking about wishing someone didn't come into work because they just "wanted to have fun" and then later on as I was leaving the store one of them cheered that the employee wasn't coming in thanks to Emily... Want to feel like a second class citizen in a second hand goods store? Here's your store! Last week when I was in the store, I paid cash, (2) $20, and (2) $10, for an almost $60 order. The cashier kept ducking behind the counter. After several minutes I asked, are you checking if my money is counterfeit? She replied along the lines of: No, I am just scanning them to see if they are real..... ok, and EACH one???? I understand not wanting to get ripped off, but just as a disclaimer, They NEVER check ID's to make sure that the credit/debit card swiped is really yours and most of the fraud I have experienced has involved someone stealing my bank card info and going on a spending spree.... I let it go as company policy. I visited today and just before checking out (with a debit card), I selected some books beneath the register because of their book sale. There were three workers behind the counter, one of them at a register. I looked at her and stepped forward and she asked if I was ready to check out. I said "yes". She said that I needed to go to the back of the store and stand beneath a sign until someone was ready to check me out..... Wha What??? I am near the front of the store, at a register, and there are NO other customers waiting to check out, with THREE people behind the counter looking at me. I walked to the back of the store and stood beneath the prescribed sign. The ladies kept working. Finally after a couple of minutes of standing beneath the sign, one asked if I was ready to check out.... Mind you, there was NOT a big distance between her and the first lady who had asked if I was ready and sent me to the back of the store... and I am still the ONLY customer at the counter. "Yes", I responded. She looked at the third lady who shrugged and said, "I can take her". This is the most unprofessional and rude customer service! What is wrong with people? I have sold and purchased with this store for 7 years. This weekend was the WORST! As the store has gotten more advertising, the customer service has gotten worse. I walked in and I had forgotten that my clothes needed to be in a container, so immediately I was yelled at that "you need a container, because we can't risk it." No Hello, Welcome to Once Upon a Child or anything of the sort as they used to do. The worker was RUDE and ABRUPT!! I don't know if that group of store workers were just overworked or naturally RUDE by nature. I have noticed that each time I go into this location (Rivers Ave.) there is a new group of workers in there. The workers turnover rate seems to be high and frequent. Anyhoo, so I went to my vehicle and got a container and from there, I was yelled at again that the wait time was 20 minutes. The worker was still looking at something in another direction so I had to ask if the remark was even directed at me. I shopped and did not find the usual bargains but picked up a few things and When I got up to the front to check out, they had offered me $9.00 for two Izod suits and one jacket (all Izod from Belk) (one never used), still had the tags on it. My son grew out of it before he could wear it. I have never been offered anything less than $35.00 to $40.00 for the clothes I sell. I was told that it was due to inventory. Hhhhmmmm, funny there wasn't one suit on the racks in the size 8 or 10 sections for boys. Inventory you say? Now I have had jeans before and I was told that they had too much inventory of jeans and I saw that for myself, but this weekend, the inventory statement about the suits was NOT true. I have rarely even seen suits in the boy's sections. Unfortunately, much like most experiences now in America, I believe the entire visit was overtly related to something other than the clothes I had in my hand and more about me. It is sad. I will no longer support this store with my business. Honestly you can get good deals elsewhere by searching for sales and don't frequent places where you are disrespected or Not valued as a customer. read more

Shopped here for many years, it's always had its downfalls but I put up with the negatives because I still enjoyed shopping there. I stopped because of how incredibly rude the management is. They cussed at me in front of my child when I asked about an item being marked wrong. They then were very rude when I complained online. You can find multiple examples of their poor treatment of customers that complain online with a simple google search. I use to stick up for them when people would speak poorly of the store. As everyone knows, whenever you talk with friends about this store everyone has negative things to say. It hurt even more to be treated so poorly by them after more than a decade of shopping there and sticking up for them. The Myrtle beach and Columbia locations are owned by different people and are far superior to the Charleston and Savannah locations. There's also much better option in Charleston like Tiny Tadpoles, Angels and Rascals, Kid to Kid and the seasonal consignment sales like Charleston Repeats and Switcharoos of the Lowcountry. You can find much better deals at other places or even buying new and you don't have to worry about being treated like garbage if you have a complaint like you would at Once Upon a Child Charleston. read more

This store definitely serves a specific purpose and savvy shopper looking for a deal on kids clothes. I have a 5 year old and most of the clothes we've bought her have been used her entire life. Kids are going to ruin and soil their clothes anyway and then outgrow them so what's the point of spending tons of money? If you agree you'll love this place! The staff is OK but they are definitely looking for seasonal, brand specific stuff and you'll just have to get lucky if they want to buy your stuff. Did a closet clean out for the new school year for my boys. I sent my daughter to Once Upon A Child. With a bag of 27 items in excellent condition a few new with tags and several new without tags. My daughter came home with 7 of the 27 items. Once Upon A Child kept 20 pieces and gave my daughter $22 and change. I tried calling the store to speak to someone bc I just knew that was a mistake. Couldn't reach anyone...answering machine picked up both times. Got off work and went to speak with someone directly and was to told that they payout 20 to 50% of what they can sell the item for. I let her know that the payout given wasn't within that range. She then says that the quote for payout is computer generated so basically what the computer quoted is what they offered. I will donate my items or sell at a yard sale before I ever do this again. I feel taken advantage of. read more

This a great store to look for clothes that are adorable and at a great price ! They also do military discounts and they also give you a card after spending $200 you get another discount for like 20% (I think) . They have a great selection I'll admit but if you think you want to sell your clothes to earn some extra cash, you'll be disappointed.
