The folks here are friendly and helpful and the selection and prices are great and are pretty much in line with market if not slightly lower. I ended up buying a couple of new records as they got some stock on Record Store Day here as well in addition to their usual huge inventory of used (and new) records. I even got to replace an old Rolling Stones live record that I loved (and at some point lost in my own collection). There's a big parking lot and it's fairly easy to find parking. It was a little hectic when we went, only because it was on Black Friday.

But I digress as this has been an independent record store since 1997, an offshoot of the Berkeley store on Telegraph. Digital downloads be damned, this shop is focused on physical media...CDs, DVDs, cassette tapes, Blu-rays, and of course, vinyl. Even before picking up spares at Park Bowl, I recall that moment in my youth when I made the monumental decision to switch my record purchases from vinyl to CDs. Nowadays, vinyl is making a comeback among a younger generation looking for a higher quality, more realistic sound quality. I saw these Gen Z audiophiles flipping through the long LP bins in search of the elusive underground classic their stereophonic friends could appreciate and envy. Personally I could find nuggets of my own. Albums like The Very Best of Spike Jones (Photo 10) and The Complete 2,000 Year Old Man (Photo 5) resonated with me. I was happy to see individual LPs consolidated into boxed sets like the Linda Ronstadt retrospective. Beyond the music is the expansive DVD collection of movie titles both classic and obscure. There's also books and collectible merchandise like pop-culture lunch boxes and celebrity prayer candles. One of the worst selling experiences I've had at a record store…read more I dealt directly with one of the owners, AJ, and the entire interaction felt disrespectful, evasive, and extremely shady. I brought in records to sell and simply asked what he was valuing a couple of them at individually. Instead of giving me a straight answer, he got defensive, kept saying he could find them elsewhere, and repeatedly tried to steer the conversation back to one bundle price. The biggest red flag was my East Side Story record. AJ clearly had a strong interest in it, but when I asked what he valued that specific record at, he still refused to give me a direct number. If you know enough about a record to specifically want it, you should be able to tell the person standing in front of you what you're valuing it at. I do not care if a store offers me less than market value. Businesses need to make money and I understand that completely. What I do care about is transparency. Don't act like someone is stupid just because they're young. Don't dodge basic questions and expect someone to blindly accept a bundle price without understanding what you're assigning value to. The whole interaction left me feeling like he was hoping I didn't know what I had so he could get a much better deal for himself. If your prices and offers are legitimate, there should be absolutely no reason to be secretive when a customer asks how you arrived at them. Being an owner doesn't give you an excuse to talk down to people, become defensive over basic questions, or make a customer feel like you're trying to pull one over on them. Young does not mean naive. I knew enough to ask questions, and the fact that those questions were met with attitude instead of answers told me everything I needed to know. I walked out with my records, and I'm glad I did.

She feels like a warm lovable character from your favorite book, the kind you reach for every now and then to read over and over again. I called recently because I really wanted to get my hands on a copy of Nikita Gill's new book "Hekate" and yes, I know I could just order it online from big box stores but I knew I wanted to support my local bookstore. Renee was quick and prompt and while she didn't have it in stock, she ordered it as quick as she could and I was able to go pick it up in the next day or so! And I picked up a few other books while I was at it because who could say no to more books!? I love popping in whenever I'm strolling downtown and I hope Books on B never leaves!

A local gem in downtown Hayward! Such a cute independent bookstore. They have a large selection of…read morenew and used books in this cozy shop. Great prices for used books and I don't mind paying full-price for new ones since it's important to support indie bookstores instead of billion-dollar corporations. The owner Renee is so knowledgeable and friendly. I've come here to shop and sell back books for store credit too. Definitely a must-see if you're in the area.

My wife found this newly opened vinyl shop on Castro Valley Blvd. It is a small space bout the owner makes up for the size of the shop with his help and great pricing of records. The vinyl that i purchased were all like new or very very good and the price for the records were extremely reasonable. I gave him a list of the records I wanted that week and he produce many of them within 7 days of my request. I was blown away. Great hard to find Lp's for a great price and the owner is extremely helpful. I play my records every day and with One Bad Apple's help I will be able to continue to find the LP's I am looking for. read more

Everything you could want from an independent, local record store. This is a one-man operation, and that one man happens to be an extremely friendly and knowledgeable guy named Don. Go say hi and scope out the inventory, which is surprisingly vast and eclectic for the size of the place. And if that's not enough, the shop also sells musical instruments, amps, CDs, DVDs, plus a whole menagerie of cult/comic figurines and other nostalgic memorabilia. For my random old records, I've gotten between $40-$60 for 20ish records. The records available for sale are stylistically diverse and reasonably priced. There are lots of affordable favorites, as well as some more expensive rare records. It's a great idea to stop by often to see what's new. I was able to use a store credit for my partner's birthday gift and they selected a couple of records they really wanted. We made space in our collection, and could buy some more records in exchange. Way better experience than selling clothing at Crossroads. The posters for sale are also pretty cool. Overall a great experience as a buyer and seller. I'm grateful to have this special shop close to home.

I love their fun chalkboard of new releases and recommendations of new arrivals as well. They have an excellent section of new and used record players and audio equipment near their listening station. The staff is always friendly and helpful, not uppity or acting bored and unhappy to be there like some other record shops you might be unlucky to go into. Oh, and they're dog friendly! They are located in an alley off 49th (aptly named Alley 49), that has a number of cool small shops. Their shop is towards the end on the right (if coming from 49th.) As you walk in, new arrival LPs are the first thing you see, with several boxes of 7"s to your left. They also have several bins lining the left and back walls. While there are some smaller sections for genre's like blues, jazz, reggae, etc., the focus here is definitely more in the rock and alternative realm. Pricing for what they had seemed reasonable. Given they have a strong selection, I would expect slightly elevated pricing, but nothing out of the ordinary here. While I wasn't able to find anything to take home during my visit, the person working the counter let me do my thing browsing the store, which is my preference (over being bugged about what you're looking for.) Obviously to each their own, but suited my needs just fine!

But...(and this is the reason for my updated review) usually about 2/3 of that stack of records that I have found ends up being more scratched up than I am cool with purchasing. I know my standards are pretty high, and I also know that they are a used record nook in an antiques store, but it's a genuine bummer when you find a real gem of an album only to discover that it is too scratched up to play well. That being said... The records that I do end up buying from there are always great additions to my collection.
