The service was amazing. The owner is extremely knowledgeable and friendly, with a great personality. He was very welcoming, and I really enjoyed talking with him. I also loved the backstory behind the store. The inside of the shop is clean and well organized, with everything sorted by genre, making items easy to find. There's a great selection of records to choose from. The prices are reasonable--I paid $40 for a Sade vinyl record. Overall, 10/10. I highly recommend this record store. This place has a great collection of classic records!! They have every genre here, rock, reggae, jazz, rap, 60s, 70s, 80s, you name it, just be prepared to do some digging, you might be pleasantly surprised as to what you might find!! What was really a surprise was the prices, very very reasonable!! A pretty small store, with friendly service, you're greeted by the manager coming and going!! I feel incredibly fortunate that this record store is so close to my house. It's not Gigantic, like Rhasputin, but it's not small either. It's well stocked and well organized. I would say there is a slight lean toward alternative/ punk/ new wave and very little hip hop, but new and old are both represented. But the key to this store is Chris the owner. Most record shops, the person who works there will chat, but you wish they would stop. Chris is incredibly friendly, honest, and knowledgeable. He is a joy to talk to. And no I'm not his nephew or ex roommate. read more

3 stars purely for the following. I stopped by today at 5PM, lights were on but doors were locked. The sign on the door showed open hours until 6PM, Yelp hours show open until 6pm, website open til 6PM... so, kinda sucked that I drove from Dublin and there wasn't a sign or anything to explain the early closure. Walked in the store and was immediately surprised. The store is bright and inviting. Everything is extremely organized. All genres of records clearly labeled and easy to find. Excellent selection of music. A mix of old and new. Service is friendly and welcoming. Most shops have a limited number of artists and this was impressive. Prices matched my expectations. My husband and I purchased multiple records and are extremely happy. I've never seen such a great selection in a store. I will be back and recommending to my family and friends as well. One of the best record shops in the Bay Area. Surely a hidden gem! Stopped by on the first Saturday that actually felt like Autumn. With no sunny day to enjoy out and about, the next best thing is find a record store and spend a cozy time browsing for ways to spend cash and boost that serotonin level. Chris greets every customer as they enter, offers to help if needed, then leaves you alone to your meditative state of hunting for music. Their selection is very nicely organized and have a pretty wide breadth of genres. Their classic rock selection is probably their largest (that I can tell), with a bunch of other genres (ie: ska, funk, psychedelic rock, soul, alt-pop, etc.) flanking the walls of the store space. The discount sections are aplenty and more organized that discount sections of most other record shops that I've been to.) What's really cool to me is that most, if not all, of their regularly priced/stocked records were cleaned, and most of them have an outer protective sleeve. I discovered a minor complaint once I got home; and it was that the price stickers were bit difficult to remove w/o leaving some residue. I had one that was applied directly onto the jacket, which damaged jacket a bit upon removal (no big deal though, it wasn't covering the art/photos part of the jacket). I have the best experience with removing those HPB stickers. Not sure where HPB source their stickers from, but I feel like every record store should be using those I was going to pull the trigger of a couple more records but had to restrain myself. as a record collector and reggae nerd, i was excited to learn that there was a new record store in downtown Hayward, and even more excited that it was named Ska Dog. the owner(s) of this shop definitely know their reggae. their reggae section is full of deep cut reissues/remasters that reflect the many different flavors of Jamaican music, but there are enough Marley/Tosh/Cliff offerings to catch the eye of the beginner/casual listener as well. i'm not big on shrink-wrapped records (i prefer a little ring wear and surface noise), but Ska Dog has a bunch of new stuff that piqued my interest. i'm looking forward (i.e. hoping) to seeing them expand their Jamaican inventory. new vinyl: there's not a lot of pork here. i won't lie and suggest that i wanted to buy every new record on their shelves, but i can say that Ska Dog is not trying to sell a lot of mass appeal music. with a small footprint and limited space, the owners have done a great job of filling their bins with stuff that is interesting but not necessarily found at every record store. used vinyl: this is where Ska Dog kinda fails. most of the used inventory is simply horribly overpriced (considering its condition). it seems like the shop owners look up their used inventory on discogs and slap discogs' 'median price' to everything, regardless of the condition. i purchased a few used $10/$15 LPs that sounded like they were dragged across the sidewalk in front of the store. which is cool - i just won't buy used records from them i guess. they just put SO MUCH CARE into making their store unique, it's a shame that they overvalue their junk. read more
