My child has been attending since February, and in just a few months, we've seen tremendous growth, not only in language skills, but also in behavior and overall happiness. What stands out the most is how excited my child is to go to school every day, and even more telling, how they want to linger and keep playing when it's time to go home. That kind of joy and comfort speaks volumes about the environment the teachers have created. Ms. Shelly and Ms. Aya have been absolutely wonderful. They are warm, attentive, and truly invested in each child's development. I really appreciate how open they are to working with parents and tailoring their approach to meet each child's needs. It's clear they genuinely care and want every child to thrive. The school does a fantastic job of encouraging independence, teaching important manners, and creating a space where children can learn naturally through play. We've been so happy with our experience and are really glad we took a chance on this newer location. I also do hear that the director there may be there past her prime, this review is based on my perspective as a father. Although I speak 100% English to my daughter, my wife speaks 100% Japanese to my daughter. I think this is a great school that provides a lot of opportunities for those that want their kids to learn Japanese or at least enforce what they can retain. There are class moms that assist with the parents in helping with various activities that this preschool has. They do have a Halloween event, Christmas event, some other event that involves hitting a watermelon blindfolded (Suikawari), and an athletic event which the whole family can get involved called Undokai in the spring. There are bake sales and Teriyaki chicken sales, throughout the year. For those that miss very few classes, there are attendance awards in June for those that miss the least days of preschool. Also in the middle of June prior to the completion of the spring session, there is a day where kids can play on 2 jumpers should they wish to expel their energy. As for the staff, of course all of them speak fluent Japanese. English most likely is not their first language but they do have an understanding of it. For those students and parents that do not understand Japanese, there are those that can help you understand what is going on. The teachers are mostly older than probably other Japanese preschools in the area but they do a great job facilitating a pleasant learning environment. Of course with any school, parents can meet each other prior to dropping off or picking up their kid(s) so it can serve as a place for parents to find out which friends your kids enjoy playing with. There is a day that is set where parents collectively can visit your child's class to see what goes on during their daily activity. For those that attend the summer sessions, there are 2 days each week designated for pool day so the kids can cool off in the plastic wading pools that are set up. Play toys are available in each classroom and are based on the age of the child. As far as outdoor play equipment, there are also 2 large sandboxes, tricycles to ride, a secure place for kids to run on concrete, a play gym, and 2 Little Tyke style houses for the kids to play in. This school has allowed our daughter to grow up in an environment she is comfortable in. It helped that we attended the Gardena Buddhist Church so our daughter was accustomed to the environment and not shocked into a preschool. After 2 years of this school, she will now go to an English school so she can start the transition to Kindergarten. It is always good to register early in any preschool so you have a good chance of enrolling there. We would send our other daughter to go there but since we moved, we will enroll our 2nd one to another local Japanese preschool.

Even though it's a new school but it's really a new site for Nihao. It has all the systems and rules. The director there is an experienced elementary school teacher who is very considerate and thoughtful for situations such as my child's eating habit and bathroom usage. They have hands on activities, outdoor activities for lessons, celebrate different festivals as well as nap schedule, which is essential for the little ones. Myself, is also an elementary bilingual teacher, and I love that they differentiate the lessons for the kids to meet their developmental needs. Besides, they teach Mandarin and English, which helps my son speaks Mandarin at home since our home language is English. There's a lot more to say about this school, and if you are looking for a systematic bilingual preschool, this is the one.

She started when she turned 2 and it was a tough transition at first, as she had never spent time away from mom and dad before. She cried a lot and asked for mom, but her teachers (Ms. Stephanie and Ms. Ashley) comforted her and helped her to adjust. Speaking of her teachers- they are awesome! Ms. Stephanie is a rockstar, managing a classroom full of children while keeping everyone calm and well behaved. The energy in the classroom overall is relaxed and cheerful. I also have to give a lot of credit to Ms. Caroline and Ms. Anita, who clearly love children and show that everyday. Len, the owner, has done a fantastic job with the school. He clearly cares about how the school is run. They celebrate various holidays, birthdays, and often have fun events during the week to keep the kids busy. The school is always decorated with bright, fun decorations that feature a unique theme. The facility is clean and nicely maintained. They have a huge playground in the back where the kids can get fresh air and lots of exercise. I love how Southwood prepares the kids for Pre-K and kindergarten by properly socializing them and educating them. They have specific lesson plans everyday, and they do a lot of arts and crafts. My daughter's verbal and communication skills have grown tremendously, thanks to the educational activites that the teachers offer. I also want to mention that Southwood is very affordable for the area, which I appreciate. Finally, they have a strict vaccine policy, which requires all children to have up-to-date immunizations. Very disappointing experience…read more Our experience at Southwood was ultimately very disappointing, and we made the difficult decision to remove our son from the school. We frequently witnessed time-outs, a punitive approach to typical preschool behavior, and teachers yelling at children. This made us question whether the school prioritizes teaching emotional regulation and appropriate behavior in a calm, nurturing environment. We also observed significant teacher turnover, which raised concerns about consistency and stability. In addition, we heard teachers express concerns about their working conditions, including inadequate bathroom breaks, the removal of the water cooler, and bonuses being taken away. These comments made us question whether staff were receiving the support they needed to care for the children effectively. We encourage parents considering Southwood to ask about its discipline philosophy, use of time-outs, staff turnover, and teacher support. This was not the environment we wanted for our son, and we are comfortable with our decision to leave.
