OUTSTANDING! This hike was a challenge and a total Adrenalin rush for my crew and I. I loved it! We had to work our way over a huge log dam which was very steep and slippery. You had to pass this to even get to the falls. The water was freezing, so make sure the shoes you wear you do not mind getting wet. TIP: make sure you arrive as early as possible. The hike and gorge itself becomes very crowded as the day goes on. As you make your journey to the gorge, you find yourself walking into waist deep water. The moss caves and steep mountain sides are beautiful. The water may have been cold, but it was so FRESH and clean. The water was cleaning my shoes and I did not realize until I saw them at the end :D After you take the adventurous hike to the gorge, you can hike your away to another waterfall that has all sorts of views!! I felt at peace during this entire experience. The temperature is always cooler in the mountains/ by the water, we wore dry fit clothing(tank tops and capris) and were a little chilly. I cannot wait to hike to this gorge again, and the surrounding waterfalls. This is MUST vist!! read more

So it was a halfway decent day and I wanted to take a break from work to get outside. I had a list of waterfalls and since this was the closest decided to check it out first (in case it was cool then it was easy to get back to). Anyway, so we drive out there and we see a line of stopped cars. So most people turn around and leave after talking to the forest employee or whatever. We get up there and it's like "do you have a reservation?". Yeah, I didn't notice anything on the website that day about needing reservations so I didn't have one. No, you don't need to have just to come up here, but they do want one for you to hike. My problem is that it's no longer convenient to come hike, but you also have requirements of people just for them to come hike (a device, internet, banking info) that not everyone does have, and you have to PAY to go into NATURE. And don't say "it's only $2" because 1) it's not your money and $2 means a lot to some people and 2) it's not going to stay that price for long. So we're up there and we see the falls, which were okay, nothing spectacular. Areas were closed off so there isn't swimming and not much to see. We noticed next to no one setting out to hike so not really buying the bull that reservations are for "congestion". Yeah, there were no time slots available, yet no one is heading to the hiking trail, sus. Since they keep closing down outdoor areas it feels more like they're corralling us to fewer places. I'll never return because it's nothing special, not worth even the slightest inconvenience or cost honestly. read more

Great place to take a hike on a hot summers day. It was 97 degrees out, and my brother in law and I set out at 4:30p on a Saturday. My sister didn't want to venture into a hike where you would get wet, so she waited in the SUV. The path was not too crowded. There were children, parents, couples, and pets hiking up the stream towards the waterfall. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes, you will get wet since this hike is in the bed of water where you will go over sections of logs until you get to the waterfall. There will be a lot of climbing up, down, around, and through the logs. Just before you get to the falls, is the deepest part of the stream, on your hike. The water will get up to your waist, or chest high, depending on your height. It was cold. But, since today was a hot 97 degrees the water felt cold but it was bearable. After you enjoy nature, and take pictures of the Gorge and Falls, head back, and have fun, maneuvering back through the three sections of logs that are in the middle of the cool stream. Be sure to park your car legally, since my sister didn't want to hike down, she saw a lot of cars being towed, by the towing Companies, because many people were illegally parked, or were blocking others cars in, so some hikers called the police. Hence, their cars were towed away, when they returned. Overall, this hike was very exciting. As a novice hiker, I enjoyed it. It wasn't too long. Although, it was a challenge for me to negotiate and strategize climbing the logs as well as not slipping off the logs or on the rocks, into the stream, it was the best hike I've experienced, thus far. We both enjoyed our fabulous hiking experience through the Gorge to the Lower Oneonta Falls. read more

HOLY $#!T. One of the most amazing and unique hikes I've ever done. Our friend took us here and the photos looked amazing on Yelp. But the photos don't even compare to how this looks with your own eyes! First of all, be ready to get wet. You WILL get wet. There is no way avoiding getting wet unless there is a dramatic drought in Portland. Second, you will get extremely wet and the water is COLD! Be sure to bring a change of clothes and if possible water shoes. Third, be ready to do some climbing. This hike is pretty unique. You will have to go through a log jam at the beginning - you will feel like you are a ninja warrior for about 10 minutes. The log jam can be tricky and slippery, so be sure not to slip and fall on the cold water! And be courteous and be aware that people are also trying to leave via the log jam. After the log jam, its simple walking until this specific area where the water goes up to about your chest - assuming you are average height. There is no way to avoiding this. You will have to get wet unless you turn around and call it a day. After this, its the amazing waterfall. You are already wet, so might as well swim in it! Great hike. Must do. Amazing. 5 stars. People, please don't ruin this spot. read more

If you prefer to keep your forays into the wild on the domesticated side, you can drive to Multnomah Falls and see it from the car. Or follow the thousands of others up the manicured trail. It is one of the reasons that I'm in the minority and don't consider Multnomah Falls the best there is. It is too damn accessible and everyone and their grandmother has seen it. If you don't mind getting a little wet and dirty, you can have a much more authentic, personal communion with nature if you continue down the road to Oneonta Gorge. It is the perfect place to beat the heat on a hot summer day. As others have mentioned, if you stay in the gorge, it isn't so much a hike as a scramble over rocks, a log jam and through the river up to your navel. My tip is to bring an extra set of clothes and shoes so you can change after your adventure. This area is called the 'secret garden' since it isn't on the standard tourist track and is host to all sorts of flora that you won't see elsewhere. Some of the moss looks like it was spray painted on the rocks and there are caves and hideyholes bored into the rocks. It is sort of a naturalist's paradise. Enjoy the gorge and falls, just don't come by the busload. read more

Disclaimer: we didn't hike this because, well, it was just a casual stroll past a bunch of logs and you're already there! This was a case of "Expectation v. Reality" and we're still wondering if there's some other secret path we could've "hiked" to get here :? My fellow Derp was feeling adventurous and decided to swim closer to the falls while I played cameraman (read: paparazzi because I'm a total creeper). Lowkey wishing I knew how to swim, flu season be damned! Outstanding, Must Visit While In Oregon! Working your way along the river in frigid waters you cross piles of logs and go waist deep in ice water as you make your way to the falls through this ever wondrous area of resplendence. Tip: Make the journey as early as possible so you can find parking easily and beat the rush there before the crowds descend like swarms of humans and you can no longer get a decent picture without 40 people at a time taking selfies! No trip to the Portland area or the Columbia River area of Oregon would be complete without visiting This area and all the magical wonder it bestows upon your senses. This entire area is filled with magical little trails that take you up and down mountains over little creeks, rivers, into and through or around waterfalls, and all of the most wonderful places you could hope to find. I saw so many nice things here in this area that now that I am home I feel like Oregon became sort of home too. Now I am counting the time until I return here to explore more and enjoy all the wonderful green lush areas the Oregon has to offer. One of the most beautiful and surrealist hikes I've been on! It's like being on the set of Jurassic Park. This short hike is definitely worth getting a little wet! You will have to climb through a dam of collected tree stumps and walk through puddles and streams of water. I even climbed the side of the cliff, so I wouldn't get soaked from the not so shallow part of the stream. Love it! I would recommend this hike to anyone who is willing to go on a little adventure. read more

It is cheesy to say, "pictures don't do this place justice", but no kidding, the experience was amazing! Even through the tricky climbing, freezing water and balancing on rocks and hanging on to each other, I would do it again. I had an incredible time just pushing myself to get through this course for the beautiful waterfall! We went in the middle of May and around 5:30pm, and basically had this whole place to ourselves, and the same month where they blocked out the path with caution tape due to path being messed up from the flood. But me and my friends didn't fly to Oregon not to experience this hike! So being from San Jose, we climb over it willing to take the risk, and honestly it was totally fine, minus the water temperature; it totally numb my toes..! You will get wet on this trip, no way to avoid this, some parts gets deep, certain areas I had to swim across, but if you don't know how to swim, you can hang on the side with the rocks, as you pull yourself over. Most of the time, water will be as high as your knees, but don't forget it also depends what month you go. -water shoes -waterproof camera -waterproof bag (or ziplock everything!) -and a sense of adventure! The hike honestly is not a hike, you'll climb over logjams, and from there you walk on the creek till you get to the waterfall. It's less than a mile to get to the waterfall. You'll noticed on other reviews about driving directions, and it all depends on which side you're coming from, but it's impossible to get lost. There's a side that will say oneonta gorge. Once you see a random tunnel, finding parking. And from the tunnel, depending which side you come from, you'll see a random bridge. And at the end of the bridge, on the side, there's this random stairs that leads you down from the bridge to the creek. That's the path!! It's near horsetaill falls! read more

GORGE-ous place. Hands down my favorite hike thus far!! Short distance, but rewarding end goal of a beautiful waterfall/pool. So much adrenaline climbing over logs and rocks and walking through cold waist-deep water. Beautiful view throughout the whole trail, surrounded my mossy canyon walls. Remember to wear sunscreen and water shoes. You'll be glad you did. It'll be crowded on the weekends, so plan to go early! It's definitely worth visiting! read more

The Oneonta Gorge is a great place to go when you want to cool down but you're not in the mood to hike like 10 miles. At a flat grade and with a distance of 0.5 miles, Oneonta is great for beginners! Be warned that the water can be up to waist deep and there will be some climbing, however. There is a logjam at the beginning so please be careful! I recommend wearing a good pair of shoes and securing your belongings. It's not uncommon to hear stories of people dropping and losing their keys/phone/camera during the climb over the log jam. Though not necessary, I would recommend wearing a backpack so you can secure things like keys and water bottles whilst at the same time having both hands to climb the logs. I had a pair of shorts on with my iPhone in my pocket and holding a hydroflask with one of my hands. I was able to get over the logjam just fine but I had to be a little extra... careful in making sure I don't lose either of those items. Also be sure that you are prepared for water. Having an extra change of clothes and a good pair of shoes (preferably water resistant) are a must! There are a few spots where you will be waist deep in water. This also means if you are going to carry anything (e.g a nice camera), you will have to expect to carry any non-waterproof stuff over your head as you walk through the water. The end of the hike is absolutely gorgeous and the waterfall itself is super accessible. The best time to go (obviously during a hot day) for photos is 1) during overcast days, 2) earlier in the morning or 3) later in the afternoon. At around noon time the sun tends to be right over the top of the fall and you'll be battling lens flare when taking pictures of the fall. Again, I recommend this hike to all who want to cool down and don't mind a little bit of climbing. read more

This hike was the highlight of our trip! We were hesitant to do it at first but we are so glad we did! We came in mid-July, a time when you'd hope to have some warm sunshine... But we didn't really have that. We did this hike in cold, gloomy weather. Just imagine your entire body in the cold water! BUT I must admit that it was not bad at all. For most of it, your feet to your legs may be in water but there's a small portion where if you're short like me (5'1" tall), then you may need to swim for about 10 feet. Some tall guys who were 6 feet tall were still able to walk in it so it really wasn't that bad. We avoided the swimming by staying to the right side of that portion. You can kind of climb along the wall and step on parts of the rocks. Also, be prepared to climb over log jams and a boulder. It's not that hard but it's fun. Be careful though! At the end of the hike, you see this beautiful waterfall. It's worth it! TIME: 1 hour (with time for stopping for photos) DISTANCE: probably about 1 mile WHAT TO BRING: - dry fit leggings (if you wear shorts, you may end up with some scrapes) - bathing suit - water shoes - waterproof phone case/go pro - backpack PS Multnomah Falls is nearby. WEAR WATER SHOES! Shoes with closed toes! Do not wear sandals or your poor toes will get smushed against the slippery rocks that you have to walk on. Don't say I didn't warn you haha The infamous oneonta gorge hike is BEAUTIFUL. It's a must for anyone and everyone who is visiting Oregon, especially in the summertime! You do get wet, but not entirely. I'm 5'5" and the water only went up to my waist at most. However, it was freezing cold. Good thing I went when there was a heat wave. Anywho, park in the parking lot and walk through the tunnel. You'll walk onto a bridge and see some stairs to your left (or right, depending on which side you park). This is where the trail begins. Be careful of where you step because most of the rocks are not settled. You'll end up jamming most of your toes if you tried to walk as fast as I did. You'll reach a point where the trail is blocked by all these logs. Like who's idea was it to put all these logs in the middle and have people climb over it? Oh well. It was kinda fun. After that, it's prob only .5 miles until you reach the waterfall at the end. There's a part where you go waist deep in the water and that's right before the falls. :) It's a short "hike", but well worth seeing and jamming all your toes for. I definitely want to come back when there's less people and when the sun isn't too bright to take more photos! read more

Pack WATER SHOES. I bought mine for dirt cheap off of Amazon and it got the job done. Pack towels and extra set of clothes (YOU WILL GET WET!) Park your car and walk to the trail. Take the stairs down and walk through the gorge. The day that I went the water wasn't too high (about mid thigh deep, I am 5'5") However the final crossing before the water was DEEP. (We asked someone who walked through and he said the water came up to his nipples, he is over 6 feet tall lol!) Sadly I didn't get to cross it. The water was just too cold. So cold that some people brought wet suits! But if you're brave enough to handle the chill you can walk through the deep water. Be careful and take your time crossing the logs. Lots of horror stories of people breaking bones attempting to climb over the logs. read more

- Locale Destination - It's next to Multnomah Falls - east side of the fall. Each fall is located along the Historic Columbia River Hwy. This was our 3rd falls to stop by. *********** Disclaimer **************** I'm not sure how they categorize those falls/gorge/trail... These pictures were taken at where on the right side of "Oneonta Gorge" sign - right by the tunnel. I don't think this was a "Trail" because trails usually had a sign saying "..... Trail" and the trail here was gone in a few minutes. You actually need to climb up the big trees and rocks since there is no man made trail. But I could be wrong.... I couldn't go much further because I was scared of height and its difficulty to hike. **************************************** ********* How to watch/hike falls efficiently **************** I'm a first timer for OR. To find those falls was VERY confusing at first. I guess it's the easiest way to get to the falls was to get off the exit (follow the sign) on the Historic Columbia River Hwy (30, not 84) and keep driving along the hwy. All the falls were along the hwy. We started from Wahkeena falls, multnomah falls, oneonta gorge/trail, and horsetail falls (Coming from Portland - from West to East). Each fall seemed to have a trail right next to it - hike up to the top of the falls. Some trails like the one for "Multnomah" was pretty hard and long (2 hours if you see/hike them all). I heard there're 10 or more falls there. We used up almost half a day for only 4 falls. But we spent a lot on Multnomah hiking tails ;) You're not allowed to walk on the road, so you must walk on tails for your safety. You park at the one fall, keep walking on the tails and stop by the falls and come back to your car. Most falls have parking spots. You can find shops, coffee stand and restrooms at "Multnomah" falls. Don't leave anything within the sight of your car. Be cautious. It's great to hike, take pictures, enjoy the beautiful nature. So many falls to stop. Not enough time. Some tails are really hard but it totally WORTH it. *************************************************************** - Gluttony Expedition - I couldn't go all the way to see the fall because of the difficulty to hike on the big trees and rocks. It didn't seem to have much distance to get to the falls, but you see the gigantic rocks and trees there. My friend walked there, but not me ;( I actually walked only like 5 minutes or so from the entrance. But this place was very beautiful - look at my pictures. You do climb up stuff, so make sure to wear good walking shoes. This is a spot that makes the Portland area one of the most beautiful and unique in the world. It is a special spot for the most intense summer days where you need some serious cooling coupled with adventure. Oneonta Gorge is a narrow canyon, over 100 foot basalt walls with you at the bottom looking up. The rocky walls are filled with funky ferns and plants unique in the world to the Oneonta ecosystem. Climb over the log jam, it looks precarious, but well worn foot placements indicate it's been stable for many years. That doesn't mean you couldn't slip and die, go with friends. That brings you to the canyon. Oneonta Creek is narrow there, no trail on the side in many spots, that means you will be wading in summer in 2-3 foot deep water which is cooling - or very, very cold depending on your attitude. The reward at the end, less than a half mile in, is the hidden Oneonta Falls. You will get wet in 3 foot deep water. Wear wet shoes to keep footing on slippery river stones. Bring a waterproof system for cameras and any other non-waterproof items in case you slip and go submarine. Have dry clothes, warmies, shoes and towels in the transport, you have been half swimming in glacial melt! (The longer hike to Triple Falls is strongly recommended, Oneonta Canyon is a great cooling off spot after in summer) read more

This is not a hike, it is a swim. The stream running through the gorge is chest deep in many parts. Most people who come prepared wear water shoes and a swim suit. A massive log jam and rock slide blocks much of the entrance to the gorge. To see the gorge, you will need to climb hand over hand over this treacherous obstacle course. Those who traverse the obstacle course and swim through the hike will be greeted by a magnificent waterfall. I was wet. I was terrified. Looking back on it, I can honestly say that I had a good time. We all think that Multnomah Falls is beautiful. So do the thousands of tourists that flock there daily by the busload. But what those busloads don't know is that just around the corner is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the gorge...but like most things, the reward comes with a little more effort than simply stepping out of your car. The Oneonta Gorge is a mossy chasm so narrow that at times Oneonta Creek fills it wall to wall. Strap on your tevas (and please take those socks OFF) because the only way to get to this waterfall is by alternately clambering over logjams and wading through pools of water. But the half mile adventure is well worth the hidden 100-foot falls that await. Let the busloads ooo and ahh at Multnomah - and enjoy the scenic Oneonta Falls sans tourists. read more

Hope you aren't afraid of heights. To get to the falls you have to go over a small dam of trees that are quite high and there is really no walk below to break the fall. This isn't why I gave 4 stars. Completed this short, yet fulfilling, hike in April. The day my friend and I chose to go it was a mere 54 degrees when we embarked; however, we were determined to see the falls. After the initial shock of the water (which I'm sure is refreshing in the summer months) we continued through the beautiful canyon to the final destination. After a few seconds of debating we both took the plunge near the end to swim through the final (and only) deep portion to the actual falls. If this short hike leaves you wanting some more I suggest going down the road a few miles to the Angel's Rest trailhead. Also, the earlier you leave for these hikes, the better, as anywhere along the Columbia River Gorge are popular destinations, especially in the summer months. read more

Wow what a fantastic 1-mile hike! I wouldn't really call it a hike... more of a walk/climb/swim. The round trip took about an hour and 15 minutes... this is including lots of breaks for photos (we were a group of 8). It's a pretty easy trek... there is a couple of large boulders to scale as well as some logs to cross over... be very careful as one wrong step and you could do some pretty good damage. There's one portion of the trek where you MUST get wet... the water got up to about neck high for us... a couple of us climbed through the rocks on the side while some of the others who weren't afraid of the COLD water swam through. At the end... the waterfall is gorgeous. It falls into a semi-deep pool where you can swim under the fall as well as climb the rocks around it and do some diving. Pro-Tip - come early in the day to make sure it's warm and the sun is out. It was about 70's when we started... dipped down to 60's when the sun faded... add that to the freezing cold water we swam through.. .and I had chills the entire way back! I would definitely do this again. For people afraid of climbing or swimming.. maybe you should avoid this. The climb over the logs is pretty high up... and the water was supposedly low when we went and we still had to swim through. During high season I'd imagine it'd be a lot more swimming. Make sure to bring lots of band-aids for cuts/scrapes... a good pair of water proof shoes with rubber toes would be good... there were rocks everywhere underwater that I wouldn't want to kick without protection! read more

A MUST SEE if you're visiting Multnomah fall. We almost gave up on this place after hiking for 7 miles looking for it. Boy, am I glad we didn't give up. Tip: drive to the onenota fall and just hike in from the road. It's a really short, adventous, beautiful hike! The most BEAUTIFUL view and the water trekking definitely add adventure to our trip! The water was really cold, so just come and be prepared! HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! read more

This was a pretty cool hike. Loved the scenery, reminded me of a hike in Zion. The toughest part was getting over the log jam. That was tricky and required balance and coordination. Once we did that, it was smooth sailing. A beautiful waterfall was up ahead. Water elevation varied from ankles to just below my chest (I'm 5'2). The water was cold yet refreshing. Most people go on this hike and snap a couple pictures of the waterfall. With this in mind, be courteous to people trying to take pictures. A mob of very rude girls took an entire section of the falls and even swam right in front (and behind) our pictures knowing people were waiting!!!! Anyhow, just be courteous! It was a fun hike and I would do it again. Parking can be tricky and we saw broken glass nearby so be careful! :) read more

Well it has been a long time a comin' for my 60th review. Seems like this is a good time for this review as the 2 other reviews were the last 2 years and around the same time of year. Weird. Or not. It was another hot day in Portland and we were looking for a place to do some swimming. Went to the gorge and did a nice 2 or 3 mile hike around the Horsetail Falls area and then came over here. Boy am I glad my friends knew about this place. It was good fun. Haven't read the other reviews, but there are a few things you need to know about this place before you make your tiny adventure. You will be walking through water to get to the actual Oneonta Falls. Either wear a pair of shoes that you hate (or a pair of shoes from someone you hate) or get some sandals or water shoes. You can certainly go barefoot, but you might want to think twice about it. It is only around a mile in to get to the falls, but the water in some areas is close to waist deep. The good news was that the water wasn't nearly as cold as I thought it might be. Colder by the waterfall, but that is to be expected. Anyway, another thing you need to know is that there is a big log jam about a third of the way in. It was packed today with families and animals and babies and such so getting over the logs took a bit longer than I imagine it would on other less weekendy days. Be careful though when going over. There are some nice areas you can fall into and get nice and wedged into. Might put a damper on your day. The payoff is pretty spectacular though. The falls are beautiful. There is a nice big pool of water at the foot that you can swim in to your hearts content. All in all a great way to spend a few hours outside of Portland on a hot day. read more

I'm exactly five feet so I had to cling onto the wall for dear life while getting to the end waterfall but it was worth it! I suggest you go a little early to avoid a swarm of people. I did see countless scared dogs try and make their way onto the logs and in the water and with so many people trying to get past I would definitely not recommend it.. If you bring any kind of backpack with you get ready to hold it over your head while walking through the water ( if you're tall ) otherwise leave it in the car. read more

My friends and I were planning to hike to the top of Multnomah Falls, but ended up hiking the Oneonta Falls instead because we were pooped after completing Oneonta. I would definitely recommend this hike to visitors, even locals, because it's such an awarding obstacle. Although the difficulty of this hike isn't at all difficult, it is really fun to complete, especially with other people. Right before reaching the waterfall, you have to cross a little lake that has most people chest-deep in the trench; depending on the season, the water could be ice cold... making the hike more challenging! Finally, once you make it to the end of the hike, you'll be welcomed with the sound and cool feeling of the misty tall waterfall. I think the only downside of of this hike, when I went, was that there were so many people! I think it was crowded bc we went during the holiday weekend. read more

5/5 stars--what a great experience! This reminds me of the Narrows in Utah! Being here and climbing over the log jammed was probably one of the highlights of this trip. One of the greatest places in the gorge. It is a wonderful summer adventurous hike during those hot days. I'm writing this now because I was to busy enjoying the great outdoors during the summer to be inside writing. (Mainly I forgot to write til now.) Oneonta Falls is like everyone says it is. Plan to go next summer. On those really hot days go early as this trail will get very busy with lots and lots of people. Put on your happy face, take your time, be safe climbing over the rocks and logs, and be friendly to others around you. Most importantly, Have Fun and enjoy the great outdoors. read more

By far the most adventurous trail I have ever been. Felt like a little kid climbing over all the obstacles that we came across. I knew I was going to get wet, but didn't realize the water would be waist high. The water fall was the final destination and the gorge itself was a beautiful scene. **Legends say that a man who had no other valuables other than his wedding ring, threw it in the deep pool of the fall in hopes of becoming rich later in life.** Just kidding about the legend but sadly the part about the ring is true. Oneonta Falls - Beautiful scene! - Parks Near Me - Corbett, Oregon

Since I had to look at multiple sources for information, I'll make sure this review has everything you need to know. When you take exit and get on E Historic Columbia River Hwy, about 1.5 miles down the road there's a tunnel on the left hand side of the road. Park before that tunnel, there's parking spaces on the left and space to park on the shoulder on the right. First off, getting to the waterfall is WORTH IT. I promise you won't regret it. For those of you who want to stay dry, don't. It's highly probable that you'll get wet. Whether it's in the beginning, middle, or end...you'll get wet. I suggest wearing a swimsuit (whether it's under your clothes or not). I don't suggest wearing running shoes unless you want to submerge them. I bought a pair of tabis or water shoes and they were perfect. Walking in the water...you just don't care... When you start the hike, you walk down a set of narrow stairs on this left of the trail after you walk through the tunnel, there's a short dirt trail and the trek begins...either you can go left and around to walk along the left side of the river (about ankle deep), or you can walk through the right side and go through waist high water and end up in the middle of the creek in ankle high water. When you get to the log-jam, you have to climb up a huge rock first. Then you'll balance your way through the logs and get to the other side of the creek. It's about ankle deep for awhile until you see a section where you can't see the rock bed. The water is about 4 feet deep (chest level) and you'll probably walk through it. For those talented/paranoid folks, you may try to climb the rocks and scale across it. Once you past the deep section of water, you're home free. It's ankle deep until the waterfall. read more

Holy shit. What a great accidental discovery! We were heading towards Horsetail falls and accidentally parked to soon, but since we were lucky enough to get a parking, we decided to check out what this place was. We were confused why everyone come prepared with swimsuits and we soon saw why... It turns out you have to climb over fallen tree, walk through narrows and swim in order to see the waterfall at the end! I was reluctant to get my feet wet at first since I didn't come prepared, but I knew I couldn't find something like this in CA. I climbed the "dam" with the rest of them (and some of them were really young)! And then I walked through the water with my tennis shoes on until the spot where you get chest deep and I realized that I was carrying to much electronics to risk swimming to the waterfall. I was generous enough to wait for the BF to swim to check out the waterfall and he said it was amazing and luckily I was able to get a small glimpse of it from where I was standing. If you want to see the waterfall, you are going to get wet. Don't even bother trying to fight it. And be carefully climbing - it get's pretty slippery. I gave a few people a couple of scare attacks. Overall though, it was a fun adventure and it's an amazing and gorgeous place! Highly recommend! read more

This is one of my favorite quick "hikes" in the Portland area and a good one to take out of towners to...if they're daring and down to get their hands a little dirty. This hike is along the Columbia River Gorge and situated in the middle of the Punchbowl Falls hike (Eagle Creek Trail) and Multnomah Falls. So when I have guests, I usually go to Punchbowl Falls first, head back and hit up this hike, then go to Multnomah for pictures. I would not recommend coming here when it's cold since you do get in the water and at times, it's chest deep. But if you're brave and can handle what feels like freezing temp water, then be my guest. No sunglasses are needed here since this hike is pretty much situated in between two large mountains. Please please please wear boots or hiking shoes that you don't mind getting wet...because it will be submerged in water pretty much the entire time. Once you find parking along the main road, you walk down a set of skinny stairs and walk through a low stream of water to the start of the hike which are all logs that you will need to climb your way up. This is where it's helpful if you have shoes with good grip. Once you get through this obstacle like course, you walk through water about .25 miles to the end which is a large waterfall with a sinkhole. Mostly just for taking pics, some people do jump off the side of the waterfall or swim around near it. Then you just go back the way you came. If you come during the summer time, expect large crowds which can be scary and annoying at times, especially in the beginning where it becomes a bottleneck of people trying to leave while there are a million more trying to get in. So come early in the AM or late afternoon if you want to beat the crowds. read more

I absolutely LOVE this place. We went during the heatwave in the summer on an early Sunday morning. The crowds were not too bad because we got there before 11a. The log jam is not for those who are not fit. You need to navigate wet logs up, across and down to the hike part, then you have to walk through waist deep water to get to the falls. Hike is short, maybe 15-20 minutes but what's fun is the jungle gym workout of having to climp up, jump down and navigate nature. Once we got to the falls we jumped in and it was incredible. People were just looking at the falls scared it was too cold (and it was) but still. Once we were in, it was soooooo much fun. We went in early August and I just heard that Oneonta tunnel burned to the ground. So happy we got to visit this amazingly beautiful place. read more

What a fun little adventure! I hesitate to call this a hike because really it's more like an obstacle course. You slowly tip-toe over pebbles, then strategically maneuver your way over and around a giant log jam. After that, you walk for a bit, wade (or swim depending on the water level) through freezing cold water, then finally reach your destination: the waterfall! The whole thing can be done in under an hour, round trip. A couple tips for future explorers: invest in water shoes to avoid slipping, and pack any valuables you might have on you in ziplock bags to keep them safe from the water. read more

Stunning to say the least. My advice: bring 2 pairs of shoes for before and after Pack a small bag that you can hoist above your waist with a towel and water/snacks. Do not bring people who are not physically able and small kids are not the best either. Leave the dog at home or at doggy daycare. You WILL get wet. The water is cold and goes up to your belly button. Watch the ground as you go because its slippery. You are literally re-enacting a scene from Tomb Raider and you should be fortunate if you have Angelina Jolie to guide you. That being said Oneonta is beautiful. Waterfall mist greets you after hiking over jagged old growth logs in a jam. If you're brave or slightly crazy I invite you to dive in and swim in the pool the waterfall has created. It's clear rock and the water is sublime. Its got a microclimate so if its very hot in Pdx/Gorge this place will be about 15 degrees cooler. I advise starting here to be super cold, then going to Rooster Rock afterwards to warm up and swim in the warm Columbia. Warm as in summer warm, don't attempt swimming in winter unless you got a wet suit you crazies. Oneonta is not to be missed and a definite initiation into being a true Oregonian. -The reason why I'm anti kid and those not in good health is cause you are literally hiking over a dangerous and jagged log jam. It's about 8-9 feet tall and you need to focus so you dont fall and injure yourself. It's really distracting to hear a Mom screaming at a small kid crying because it's too scared to get all the way over, because it is a little scary. Trust me for your safety.- read more

I attempted Oneonta Gorge once before and failed miserably because I didn't have the proper shoes and the water level was too high early in the season. This time, I was prepared and I made sure my friends were ready as well. When we got there, we realized that we had arrived too late in the day and all of the parking spaces nearby were gone. It certainly wasn't about the parking; it was a sign that there would be a major backup at the log jam. Growing up in China, I've had my fair share of practice squeezing ahead of people. While that is not a skill I demonstrate often, I had no choice but to show my skills here. There were people with babies trying to climb over the log jam; I would not recommend that. There were several spots where it looked like you could slip and get hurt easily and luckily, that didn't happen to any of us. The deepest part was just above my belly button (when I walked on my tip toes). This was the one time I felt happy to be relatively tall for an Asian girl. The actual hike was over before it even started. I'm glad we've been there, done that. I don't have a desire to do it again, ever. read more
