DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT use this bank under ANY circumstances! After being successfully targeted and robbed by cyber thieves who cleared out my account, ONE UNITED BANK refused to let me shut down said account to protect myself from further harm. I opened new ones, after reporting of all the fraudulent charges received but had to do so twice as the first time they omitted the single largest fraudulent charge from the report. I received my first direct deposit in the new account and they've now shut down ALL my accounts and kicked me completely out simply stating that I'm "no longer eligible" to have an account with One United Bank and that a check for my remaining funds is forthcoming. Funds I now have NO access to. ONE UNITED BANK is currently displaying more tenacity, diligence and grit in locking me out of my own account and my own money than they ever did the thieves who ripped me off. ONE UNITED BANK'S actions toward myself despite clearly being the victim here are quite hostile, repugnant, unprofessional and completely antithetical to the spirit of good business. I'm thankful to God I'm ahead on bills but I shudder when considering the effects of this revolting treatment if I weren't. Several other banks have all engaged in racist conduct against African Americans as is well documented. I went to ONE UNITED BANK confidently optimistic I'd be treated with respect. Beliving in the spirit of banking Black and ONE UNITED BANK'S claimed mission. I now know my confidence in this institution was SORELY AND PAINFULLY misplaced and THAT it's mission statement is purely lip service. Their actions have effectively cancelled Christmas for my family when my only crime was the misfortune of being victimized by cyber thieves. We as a people have more than enough problems as it is and those are about to go up exponentially given the current political winds. ONE UNITED BANK, in the face of this myriad of circumstances, I ask is THIS is how we going to be treated by our own? Is THIS what African Americans get for trusting you? For trying to build our generational wealth, cooperative economics and lift ourselves by our bootstraps with you? I constantly defend our institutions and professionals against the constant barrage of the false narrative of DEI being the only avenue African Americans have to upward mobility rather than intelligence, discipline, commitment and hard work. Those believing and spreading such narratives will read this and think "He got what he deserved" for believing in ONE UNITED BANK and many will claim it to be true. ONE UNITED BANK has validated that belief for them in how egregiously, how appallingly and how just downright horribly they've treated myself, a loyal customer, AFTER said loyal customer suffered the misfortune of being robbed by cyber thieves. "You're smart, socially conscious" and so on they say in their audio ads. I certainly don't feel that way having chosen to bank with ONE UNITED BANK as its treatment of myself in this matter resembles the financial conundrum of a guy in a story about him being an enemy of the state. I hope that I will be able to update this review. I want to love One United but they are making it difficult. I opened a checking and savings account on March 3. After which I learned my money would not be available for 16 days. Seriously, 16 days! To top that off, I am waiting for my debit card. They are now saying they mailed it and have to send another, which will arrive in 5-7 days. There is a 50 dollar fee to expedite it, which I refuse to pay. Why should I? I have left three messages for supervisors to call me back, I've yet to get a call back. If these problems don't resolve in the next two weeks, lesson learned. I want to love One United, some people or in this case some institutions, make it hard for you to love them. Update: this seems like a rote response, I am waiting for a call. read more

This is the worse bank to have a secured card. Customer service is non existent and the inability to make electronic payments to the account is horrible. I would go with Capital One or another provider. UPDATE: Thanks for your reply One United Bank. Once again, you guys have missed the point. Every credit card issuer out there has their own website in which a customer can make electronic payments and to see when those are posted. With your bank, one can mail a payment, go through Western Union (for an additional cost), or through a customers' bank bill paying service. The problem lies of when One United Bank actually posts the payments to a customer's account. By having eliminated a customer's ability to make payments directly on a One United Bank portal, we have in essence gone backwards into a Stone Age. read more

I'm very happy I chose to move my money to a Black owned bank. I was exhausted dealing with the big banks that continually just did people wrong, apologized, some got heavily fined and kept going, kept treating people dirty. With OneUnited just knowing that they care about the African American community and make it a top priority when it comes to investments made it the right choice. I have seen the bank expand and improve over the last couple of years. The online services fit my needs and the app has been greatly improved since I first started using it, they definitely listened to their clients and customers. I have a couple of accounts with OneUnited and if I had any questions or concerns I always got a friendly, competent and knowledgeable customer service rep on the phone to assist me. Those other banks can't compare to my bank - Once you go Black you never go back! read more

I talk about how much i love this bank so much that my friends think they're secretly paying me. They're not, they're just a kickass financial institution. On a practical level, they're convenient, you can do everything online, and they're really kind and helpful in person if you ever go to a branch. Low and no fee accounts, lots of easy to use features and their online banking platform is easy to use and straightforward and has helpful extras like budgeting tools. My old credit union had a hidden fee for everything; there is nothing like that with OneUnited; they really keep costs down for users and make it easy. When I opened a small business account for my new venture, which I did in person, the professional who helped me was rooting for me and encouraging me the whole time, and gave me some great advice. It was a really encouraging, supportive experience at the start of the scary venture of opening a small business that I didn't expect to have when I did the mundane chore of opening a bank account. But I really felt supported and cared about. More importantly, OneUnited really cares about the community and social justice. I know they aren't ever gonna invest my hard-earned money in anything evil, which is important when you have so many places like Bank of America funding everything from the Dakota Access Pipeline to prisons. OneUnited is financially solid and I trust my money is safe, but they are not out to make a profit and forget about us or exploit us. They offer a lot of services that help build financial literacy (i've learned a lot from their emails), and have special accounts for elderly people with no fees and services to help them not get scammed, and new no fee accounts for kids to teach them money management. You can tell they are invested in helping people, and they sponsor really good social justice and community initiatives. Really awful customer service. I opened the account because I wanted to support Black-owned businesses. It was painful to close my CDs properly. Even after I did that, it was still hard to get a bank card and to do anything else i wanted. I eventually decided i wanted to close my account; the closure did not work online because of their failure. They sent me a charge and i was eventually able to get it reversed. They then said they would send me a check because it failed as a transfer (fine). When I got the check, it was short by the amount of the charge. I complained and they said that there was an additional charge because i was below the minimum balance (the only reason i was below the minimum balance is because of the original incorrect charge). I sent a request to the BBB and the bank said they would get back to me in 2 days. I am now waiting 3 weeks later. Awful service; would not recommend. read more

Please do not do business with this shoddily run Black owned financial institution! Here's my story... A few years ago, I opened THREE accounts with OneUnited Bank. What seemed to be a Black owned establishment that promoted its namesake... ONE UNITED! Let me be clear... IT WAS NOT! I guess it MIGHT be Black owned. Who knows. I created all of the accounts (checking/savings/CD) by phone or online. The bank has no branches nearby but I wanted to lend them my patronage anyway seeing as though there weren't many Black banks here in the first place. At the time, I was patting myself on the back. SILLY ME! Firstly, a few months into it, I found out that if you don't both keep a minimum balance AND have a steady influx of cash going into the checking account, they charge you something like $40/month! Luckily I went to randomly check my paperless statement. I called them to try to figure it out and they told me that I should've listened more carefully to the terms of service! I didn't get my couple of penalties back either! I thought, at the time, that I should've closed all the accounts right then. I did not. I absorbed the funds in my checking account into my savings. I simply closed the only offending one. But that was a few years ago. Things got worse just recently. I recently tried to move some money from the savings to a credit card on with I made a significant purchase. Easy peasy, right? NOPE! About 3 or 4 days later, the funds came out of my account AND were applied to my credit card. Okie dokie... a little late, but c'est la vie. THEN, a day after that, I'm snooping around to see what my credit card balance is, and my credit limit remaining is NEGATIVE! What the wha? I go to check the offending payment, and... guess who?! ONEUNITED! How the hell? The drama I went through to just make the payment was like hell to begin with. All sorts of verification had to be JUST RIGHT. Nope... that wasn't enough. It turns out that, upon my withdrawal of those funds for my card, a FROZEN ACCOUNT switch was triggered. The funds came out just fine... but they didn't go back in after being frozen. I just called to see what the heck was happening and I was told that "I WAS TOLD ABOUT THIS PROCEDURE WHEN I OPENED THE ACCOUNT". What?! So... let me get this straight. I ran to a BLACK owned bank with NO branches in my area trying to do the right thing, and y'all do me WORSE than the centuries old banking establishments??? Whoa! So... guess what? Closing ALL the accounts, and writing this text in hopes that many of y'all will read and share it. STAY AWAY FROM ONEUNITED! Of course, they're sending me an email telling me how to close the account per the instructions given WHEN I OPENED THE ACCOUNT. I'm more pissed at the Black on Black drama than the frozen (and still frozen) funds. But I'd really like the funds too. Luckily my credit card is somewhat understanding. Whatever you do, do not put your money with OneUnited under any circumstances. Don't fall for the "Bank Blank" okie dokie! They are a Fraud and they need to be investigated by the OCC and CFPB. I have recently opened a secured credit card with the stupid bank and closed it after I realized how f---- they were in their customer service or knowledge of the banking industry. They prey on low to moderate income customers thinking they don't know any better. I closed my account October 29th and was told it has to be paid in full before I can get my own money back. I paid the stupid account in full on November 16th. They received their money. My account was showing paid in full for over 15 days. According to their policy "Your UNITY Visa credit card account balance must be paid in full before we can close your account. The security deposit cannot be used to payoff your outstanding account balance. Your security deposit will be refunded no later than 15 business days after your final payment. Please notify us at customersupport@oneunited.com or call us after you have paid your balance in full that you would like to close your account." As of yesterday, my account was paid in full, but never received my refund deposit. No one knows how to get in touch with credit card departments customer service except via email. They even lie on their customer saying they send you emails, which is a lie. I have been calling the bank and have been getting nasty supervisors - Charlene just to name one and others who were not helpful at all. All they know how to do is pass the buck to someone else. I got the run around I started to get dizzy. No one knows what they are doing. I can tell you they are in major violations of so many regulations - UDAAP, Fair Lending, OCC Third Party, you name it. I hope Elizabeth Warren investigates them. They are taking advantage of bank black, but don't actually have the infrastructure to support their business model. I wonder who gave them the green light to operate. Kevin and Teri, wherever you are, your institution stinks. So today I check my account, boom, I now owe $2.35. So I have to wire $2.35 to now close my account which showed paid in full yesterday before they can refund my own money which will take them 30 - 45 days. I have never worked with such an incompetent institution in my life. For what its worth, I will keep my money with Wells Fargo! Stay away! They even charge you an annual fee of $49 which was hidden and never disclosed to me. I read their disclosures and nowhere did it say that there was an annual fee upfront at account opening, nor did they disclose that they charge $10 for withdrawing your own money. read more

I've been extremely satisfied with the level of service received from this bank. I am proud and happy that there is a black bank in my community. They cater to the unique services and needs of the demographics that larger banks don't focus on. I find their fees and rates to be very competitive.
