My aunt's dog passed away suddenly while she was here visiting. I called ORAH and right away I was able to drop off her dog to be cremated. They offered private or public (private you can have the cremains returned to you), they also offered hair clipping, paw prints, and nose prints. The cremains were returned in just a few days; they are in a beautiful wooden box with the actual ashes in a nice velvet pouch. (Better than the cardboard box and plastic bag my mom came home in!) All of this was $275 for a small dog. My aunt was extremely pleased with how the whole process went and beautifully her beloved dog is memorialized. read more

My cat was seen this weekend for an emergency vet trip. The receptionists helped me get set up with Care Credit and were very kind. The vet spent lots of time with me going over tests, pricing, and options in a very nice helpful manner. I highly recommend them. Great office. read more

Customer Service needs to be reviewed. I came to pick up my cat when I called. The front desk had me pay, and I did hear someone call the back. One other person came in when I did, and she received her dog within minutes. Another person came in, and was able to take home her dog. 20 minutes later, a woman came in for her cat. At this point, I was attempting to get the attention of the front desk staff. They would look at me, then turn their back. When the woman who came in 20 minutes after me received her cat, I stopped the tech, and asked about my cat. About 10 minutes later, I finally received my cat. The worst part is that no one apologized for the wait, they all passed the blame. A simple "sorry, we messed up" would have gone a long way. read more

If you have a bunny, don't go here. I would give zero stars if I could. At first, I was not upset with the treatment that I got from the vets. Little did I know what I was getting into. I took my bunny, Charlie there for a neuter surgery when he was 7 months old. He never came home. I didn't think anything of it, they didn't make me pay for the surgery (only the cremation, $350 for a 3lb bunny) and I mourned the loss and went on. However, recently after talking to many people, all having the same story as me, that their bunny passed in surgery due to a "heart murmur" I am fuming. They are irresponsible, inexperienced and unprofessional. They have no idea how to handle bunnies properly. I recommend going to Essex Vet center for any pet, especially bunnies. They are the complete opposite of onion river, and that is the biggest compliment of them all. I cannot express how dissatisfied and angry I am simply through a review. I wish I had never came across onion river animal hospital and I will tell everyone I know the same. read more

For the love of money? Prior to my visit at Onion River I asked several people, mostly what I heard was how expensive Onion River Animal Hospital was. But Onion River told me they could get my pet in quickly for an appointment, and I was a bit worried about problems my pet was having, so I went ahead booked the appointment and brought my pet in. The initial visit left me feeling a bit worried. The intake questions seemed designed mainly to gauge my feelings & love for my pet. Like they wanted to see how much I was willing to spend to treat my pet. Plus, despite spending hundreds on that initial visit, they couldn't tell me what the problem was, and said I needed to spend even more on a second visit, complete with expensive procedures, to determine the problem. I felt pressured to schedule that second appointment, with the Vet telling me how busy she was, but that she could "bump" another appointment to get my pet in quickly. She was sure to tell me how urgent this second appointment could be, "for the sake of my pet". I was in Sales for years, and one often used tactic employed in Sales is "fear of loss". I.e., if you don't book this appointment now you may have to wait & risk your pet's health. I decided to take my pet into another clinic, for a second opinion. That clinic was much more professional, and seemed much more honest & caring. They told me the problem was minor, and would likely resolve itself, without all the expensive procedures recommended by Onion River. Their initial consultation was less than half the price I was charged by Onion River. Plus their assessment was much more thorough. And they were completely correct, as the problem turned out to be quite minor, resolved itself quickly, and didn't require all the expensive procedures recommended by Onion River. There is an interesting book, that many Vets hate, called "Veterinary Secrets: Revealed", about how some vets, out to make an extra buck, will pad the bill with unnecessary shots, tests and procedures. In that book, the Author, a former Vet, reveals how some Clinic Owners pressure their Vets to up-sell services & procedures, and use slick Sales tactics to increase billings. A few years back ABC did a story called "Some Veterinarians Sell Unnecessary Shots, Tests to Make Extra Money", regarding the same issue. Upon reading these, I felt Onion River was doing exactly what these books & stories were describing. For the love of money? Read some of the other reviews here, and then consider the above. Many of the "perks" offered by OR are expensive, and must be met with increased billing. Many financial scams are perpetrated not by necessarily bad people, but by people that get in over their heads, and need to find ways to pay for their extravagances. People that find excuses to justify their unethical behaviors. I used to be a Financial Advisor, and often had to warn clients of this very same. I understand that Clinics & Vets deserve pay & profit for their professional services. I can absolutely appreciate quality & ethical care. But gouging & playing on people's emotions (love for their pets) and fears (fear of loss) are completely unethical. I can now better appreciate the two other Vets I've had in the past, in other states, whom provided truly quality and ethical care. I never felt they were trying to gouge me. Nor employ unethical, slick Sales tactics, simply for increased billing. Prior to the recent pandemic, one of the main concerns regarding the healthcare industry in general was widespread corruption & unethical behaviors. It seems those behaviors are not limited solely to human healthcare. I could never, in good conscience, recommend this Clinic. read more

Onion River's staff has been incredible to me as I worked through neurological issues with my boy Tux. We transferred from another vet after spending a lot of money when no answers. Together Dr. Bradley and I created a plan to attempt to save my boy and make him comfortable. To say that Karen and her amazing staff are amazing would be an understatement. Ultimately I had to make the hardest decision to say goodbye for now to my ultimate best friend so he would no longer be in pain and suffering. They got me right in and helped me through one of the hardest decisions of my life. Compassion in such a hard situation goes so far. Today I will pick my boy up and bring him home. I have never personally had an issue with Onion River until this week. On Monday around lunchtime, my 8-year-old pit mix had fallen over and couldn't get up, without the noticeable seizure. I called they got her right in. Did some blood work thought she had a parasite & sent her home - not even 10 min later she puked 3 times and I insisted they do X-rays. Found something on her lungs was told could be cancer or a fungal infection; Would send the test out the next morning. Sent me home. I got home and she started pooping straight blood, called them AGAIN. They told me to monitor her overnight and call with an update in the morning. My poor baby had a seizure a few hours later and passed away. I KNEW there was a bigger problem and I feel as though they could have done more that day to see what was going on. Now one of my other dogs is having a hard time I asked for something to give her, and they told me she is a month past her physical exam (shes UTD on shots) and they couldn't give her anything (its been 3.5 hours and they still haven't called back with other suggestions) I am completely disgusted with how this situation was handled. I have already called another Vet and they are able to get my other dog something over the counter WITH NEVER SEEING HER, After this week I would not recommend Onion River Animal Hospital. read more

I arrived in Vermont after a 3 day road trip that was very difficult for my 12 year dog. On arrival in Barre,she was restless, not eating, drinking only a little. The next day, she had problems with frequent urination, urgency, and blood in her urine. I called ORAH, and was able to get a same day appointment. The facility is state of the art. That alone isn't the basis for my 5 star review. Everyone on the team was kind and caring. Options for treatment were given with explanations for the recommendations. They also phoned later to check on her response to treatment. I highly recommend Onion River Animal Hospital in Vermont. read more

The new Onion River Animal Hospital is the nicest vet facility I've ever seen. There are many thoughtful touches -- like separate waiting areas for cats and another for dogs. When you walk in, the staff greets you immediately, and is able to get you started immediately. They can dispense prescriptions without leaving the greeting area. The technicians and the vets are very engaged in what they're doing, and have a terrific bedside manner. The last time I took Phee, I got a call from the doctor following up on her treatment. The old ORAH was very quaint and almost as good, but they really stepped it up with the new one. read more

So grateful to ORAH! They had actually confirmed the wrong appointment date with me and when I walked in they were unable to locate our information. After many minutes of searching they were able to locate our appointment 1 WEEK LATER than what was confirmed. They very graciously made time for our dog and he was able to get a full exam as well as vaccinations so that I didn't have to reschedule. The staff was very friendly, relaxed, and compassionate. Today I helped a friend to put down her cat of 11 years. Her normal vet didn't have weekend hours & didn't want to put her cat through the stress of being carted to BEVS. Onion River Animal Hospital was very compassionate and understanding and accommodated us even though her cat wasn't a patient of theirs.
