This is an old style roofer who does quality work without over-inflating the costs. The general manager of American Roofing, Edward Purcell Sr. is not afraid of difficult roofs or jobs. And he is also capable of extraordinary generosity. When my elderly neighbor's crumbling, collapsing roof made the news it was Edward Purcell of American Roofing Co. who stepped forward, donated lumber and time, gathered donations of shingles from Erie Materials, felt from ABC Supply Co. and organized other roofers to volunteer crew. Not all came through, the Roofing Guys reneged, leaving Ed Purcell and his small crew to a daunting task. But in spite of this setback Mr. Purcell remained true to his word, sacrificing other jobs to get this roof done. The job American Roofing's Ed Purcell and his crew have done on this old crumbling and difficult roof with its three dormers is simply amazing. Boards straight and true, corners tight. He has saved a beautiful roof.

When I stopped home during the day to check the progress I noticed spare rib bones in the driveway and in the grass. When I went back after the dumpster was gone there was still a couple bones in the grass. I went to mow the lawn and there were about 15 thick plastic clamps that were left in the grass by the side of my garage. I came very close to mowing over them. There were about 10 more in my backyard by my pool, which I again almost mowed over. About 10 pavers that outline my front landscaping were knocked out of place and not put back and a ceramic planter was moved and not put back in place either. I sent in pictures and received a phone call. I was informed that my dumpster was denied because there was a recliner in it. I was told that my neighbor had one in his front yard across the street. I went over to ask him about it and he said one of the workers actually helped him put it in. He then showed me his ring camera footage which backed up what he said. I called back and was told that their workers know to not do that. In the meantime I found several nails in the back yard. I mentioned it during that call and was told that someone would come out and take a look all around the house. The gentleman that showed up spent all of 2 minutes, if that, and looked around the front of my house but never even went into the back yard.

(Oye vay, our house had needed a lot of work, so we did the inside, and landscaping first.. while the roof waited patiently) This month we FINALLY scheduled to have our - very old, badly maintained, bondoed.. duct taped.. (from WAY back) ..mess of a flat roof ... TOTALLY FIXED! We interviewed 3 companies and went with VANDERHOOF. It turned out to be one of the best decisions we have made since moving to the area. Vanderhoof came in with a swat team of capable roofers, and worked like a band of Army Engineers. They tore off DECADES of badly done roof work, layer after layer after layer. (What a mess of construction debris!) At the end of every work day, they left our yard immaculate. Then they built, and built, and restructured, and redesigned. (Flat roofs need expert attention). The work took a bit longer than they estimated due to the amazing number of layers to be removed, and their painstaking rebuilding process - but the Syracuse weather cooperated *(!!) and the work finished yesterday and it looks fantastic! (Photo shows NEW SPECTACULAR FLAT ROOF! Later I'll dig out the original roof.. it looked like a moonscape of bulbous waves and misguided historic attempts to mesh a labyrinth of disconnected ill selected materials. Very friendly admin on phone, she made me feel comfortable as this is "what they do in the off season", roof repairs. Well, "Rick" came right out, climbed up into my crawl space attic (not an easy feat) took a few pix, assessed the situation and identified the problem immediately. He not only advised me what the issue was but made a short term fix (For Free) that he said would last several months or more if I decided not to go with the long term solution at this time. He left and I got the quote same day. I was very grateful for the short term fix and I decided to go with the long-term solution anyway. I left it up to them when they wanted to come back and do it and they said they'd give me a call. A couple of days go by and Rick stopped by with another person during a snowstorm. He said no big deal that's what we do. Two hours later I have the correction in place w/pictures that will last me another 50 years and I couldn't be happier.
