If travelling Westbound from Ottawa to Toronto, this ONroute is the rest stop that is the mid-point between the 2 cities. It's just outside of Kingston, ON. Its Eastbound counterpart is called ONroute Odessa, although they are both technically in Odessa. Now call me an old curmudgeon, but I liked the old rest stops along Highway 401 before they all became cookie-cutter ONroutes in 2010. Sure, they were dated since they were built in the 1960s but they had some charm and were all a bit different. Now all the ONroutes between Ottawa and Toronto look and feel exactly the same, except for the one in Newcastle, which was spared the assimilation, since it had some renovations in the 1990s and society would say that it looked less outdated (the gas station there is even still an Esso and not Canadian Tire Gas, like all the rest). The newer ONroutes have no charm or character in my opinion. If you didn't see the name, you wouldn't know which one you're in. They are all essentially the same now, which I think is a pity. This ONroute has a Tim Hortons (like they all do), Popeyes, Burger King and ONmarket (that sells Freshii to go). No New York Fries nor A&W at this one. There's a CIBC ATM. The gas station is...you guessed it...Canadian Tire! It serves its function and maybe I'm being overly harsh, I just like it when things are a bit different from others of their kind and have their own personality so to speak. However, I guess having things uniform is cheaper and maybe more efficient to run. read more

The eastbound Napanee ONroute is very much like the others dotted around the 401. On busy days, the long lineups at the restaurants can take up a pretty substantial portion of your time. This particular location added a feature that made the experience much more aggravating. Instead of ordering at the cash register, we're supposed to use the virtual booths located in the middle of the rest stop instead. This poses several problems for me: 1. This is horribly inefficient; since people won't get to view the menu beforehand, they'll take a far longer time making their order. 2. All the touching and lack of properly cleaning the screen makes ordering food unsanitary. 3. One of the booths was down, so that further bottlenecked the wait time. In addition to this, the Napanee location was dirtier relative to its sister locations; maintenance seems to be lacking. I didn't have a good time resting here. Just abolish the ordering booths and I'll be a bit happier. read more

This OnRoute is located on the 401 westbound (north side) near between Napanee and Odessa. Most of the OnRoute road stops have some things in common. The gas is usually Canadian Tire and Tim Horton's seems to be pretty much at each stop. This one as far as restaurants doesn't have and A&W but rather the other burger chain, Burger King. They do however had a KFC which is a bit of a break in things considering those aren't as common as the BK's and Timmy's. As fas as the stop goes it seems to be one of the busier OnRoute locations being west of Kingston already there's not much between Kingston and Belleville. I was (and am) grateful that this pit stop was located in this much needed corridor. However, the lineup at the Tim Horton's was so long that I got a pre-packaged sandwich from the convenience store here. NOT cheap! It was over $6 for an egg sandwich on brown bread. Unfortunately I just had to live with it for this occasion. At least there were plenty of stalls in the lady's room, although only 2 hand dryers. read more

Nice rest stop while my brother was driving from Ottawa back to Toronto. It's a huge rest stop with kfc, Burger King, Tim Hortons, mini market, Gas station. Each rest stop is different from each other. It is very clean inside with plenty of tables. I wish we have this in California. read more

We pulled in for a much needed break at 6:30 pm on a Thursday in May. The parking lot was absolutely filthy! There was rotten food and litter everywhere you looked. The inside was just as filthy as the outside. I was shocked compared to how it was kept 10 years ago when I last travelled this route regularly. Lastly, the Burger King (the only place to get a "hot meal" was actually closed at dinner time!? I would have thought the On Routes would have to maintain a certain level of cleanliness. If I were a Tourist travelling through Ontario, the Napanee On Route Westbound would leave me thinking that Ontarian's are content eating in filthy environments. read more

This is your typical OnRoute, with all the things you expect at the modern OnRoutes. It's clean, spacious, with lots of restrooms. Everything is in a large building, with a number of fast food shops (including the necessary Tim Hortons.) There was nothing extraordinarily special about this OnRoute, but it's a good place to stop if you need to. read more

Very unimpressed with service... specifically TIM HORTONS. Tim Hortons advertises an express line which was NOT express. After watching the regular line (about 10 people) be served twice over I started getting quite annoyed (meanwhile there were only 3 people in my line). Once I finally got to the cash I asked if the supervisor was on the floor, they said no but she could be found. I said don't worry about it but it may be wise to reevaluate how many people work on the regular cashes as opposed to the express cash given the current scenario. The employees (probably about 12ppl) were all aware of the scenario but continued to leave the one employee to struggle with the express line. After mentioning my observational opinion I was glared at from everyone behind the counter which made me feel bad about even saying anything. As I was walking away I heard the tall women employee explain, to her supervisor, what had happened and mocking me the whole time. Look, I get it, nobody likes to be told what to do. I wasnt ordering or bitching I was simply making an observation. The way it was dealt with was unacceptable. Poor service and I plan to never stop at this en route again. read more

Well, 3 1/2 stars if possible. We took a Canadian road trip with my cousins and this was a stop along the way for food. The good: It seems like all of the stops along the route from Montreal to Toronto has a very similar visitors ONroute center (even the architecture is the same). It's very clean and quite large. A lot of places to sit, and surrounding it is a KFC/Taco Bell, Burger King, Tim Hurton's, convenience store, and large bathrooms. Also, open wi-fi! As a person from out of the country, my 3G was not working, so this was great that I was able to connect. No password either. There are also a few TV's advertising how great Canada is. Very cute. The bad: Just not a lot of food places that I would personally eat at. I don't eat a lot of fast food, but that's almost expected that rest stops only have fast food. The Burger King here has poutine fries for an option! read more

I am impressed with the technology and features at this stop that looks modern. I think on paper the place looks great. But in reality there are too many flies and the food area is not kept clean. The focus on speedy should not take away from quality. I like the idea of using the timer to ensure that service is fast. Again, hire more cleaning crew since a public stop can get dirty pretty fast. read more

Price gouge alright. Tim Hortons had the shortest line so we decided to order lunch there. We ordered the chicken soup meal ($5.99) and the panini meal ($9.09) and were told that they were out of potato wedges. But, we were told that we could substitute a soup or a salad. I substituted a salad and my friend substituted a soup. The cashier rang in our order and said "that will be $23." What? How does $15 plus tax become $23? She futzed around some more and came up with a new total of $21. "Thats the best I can do" she said. Meanwhile, the line-up behind us was getting longer and longer. And, as we had already waited in line for a while and as there weren't other options, we accepted. In the picture, the bbq steak panini looked tempting with slices of pink steak nestled between grilled bread. In reality it was disappointing. The filling was comprised of dried shredded overcooked meat of some unknown origin. The moral of the story is, if this Timmies runs out of ingredients, be prepared to pay a 25% premium. read more

Of all the Onroutes this one is by far the worst one I've been to. The bathrooms are frequently dirty and while this may be one of the busiest ONroutes along the way, the service staff are almost always flustered with the amount of people they are servicing. If you're heading toward Toronto, stop by the other ONroutes (Inisfil and Odessa are better) and skip this one. read more

I know this is not directly affiliated with the Taco Bell here but I'm sad about my tacos and just need to air my grievances. The lady at Taco Bell was mean and didn't give me any hot sauce. That's what makes Taco Bell edible. Life sucks. Very convenient location, however. read more
